Hello, I have a question I am a beginner just started making pumpkins and little things. I live in Atlantic Canada and was wonder what would be better a soft wood or hard? Thank you
@@KyleHallwoodworker thank you! Just watched it 😊. I think buying another smaller detail saw would be best so I would be able to switch much faster. Thank you so much !
Nice work bud. I'm just starting out and like your approach. Laid back, calm, and not too much unneeded chat which allows us to focus on exactly what you are doing and why.
Enjoyable, informative video. I can't express enough my gratitude for the excellent filming from two viewpoints, and the fact you blocked out the noise of the chainsaw and instead did calm, informative narration. I wish every tutorial video was so pleasant to learn from. Happy to subscribe.
Great video. I love your laid back approach and pointers about how things can go wrong, esp addressing back & shoulder pain. I was considering a 7' tall Shrek sculpture but I think that will be too much for me to tackle physically. Are you a traveling carver? LOL
Kyle i dont know if you know this wood cracks right to stop that you drill a hole little bit big that your crack drill on each end of the crack then fill back in it stop that cracking
eBay is the way to go. Last week, 2 of 3 items to convert my 170, were out of stock. The 800# Stihl has, actually put me through to tech, they gave me the item#'s, then I got em off eBay. LoL.
Thanks for the video! That bear looks super cute holding his paws! I made one today following your instruction. It actually came out okay considering I did it all with a Stihl 261 18” bar. Is that pine you’re using? Looks like it. I used white pine. Depending on bar position the wood would get stringy. The log I cut it from had been sitting a while. Is the best wood fresh cut? Pine? Ash? What’s the best species? Thanks again. I don’t think you’re boring lol.
You’re welcome! I’m usually carving yellow pine . I prefer pine . Sometimes I carve fresh cut , I’ll carve dried if it’s been sitting. Thanks for the comment
I’m back Kyle. I can’t tell you how much I’ve referenced this video. Thank you. Question: how do you get rid of your saw shavings? I’m accumulating quite a lot. In fact, they are covering my lot.
Excellent video for someone like me that's always had an interest in doing something like this. I bought a 3 foot bear 12 years ago that had been carved and still have it to this day. I've been wanting to some to the family but wanted to do it myself. Thanks for the tutorial, it's pretty simple to follow for newbies like me...
Just curious to what wood makes the best carving? Does certain wood last longer etc? Please tell me about the wood please? If you have a video on that please let me know. I’m an artist and photographer and the one thing I haven’t tried is chainsaw carving and I’m dying to learn more and give it a shot. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us.
You are a fantastic teacher really really good. What's the deal with using electric chainsaws?... is it an idea to screw the log down when it gets light and wobbles
Thank you Kyle! You got a new subscriber even though I’m late. I’m going to try this tomorrow and will let you know if it turns out ok. I am running a Husqvarna rancher with a 20 inch bar, so I know it’ll be more tiresome, but I’m hoping that won’t effect the end result too much.

If your confident in handling the 251 then use it . I have used mine for blocking . I think the smaller Stihl battery saws would be good for detail work . I run the AP series battery saws by Stihl .
Nice Video. Would like to add that the Ms170 has Problems with the Heat from the Catalysator (melts through the oil tank) and it's carb isn't adjustable on most models. I think for beginners a Stihl Msa140 is a good fit, since the chain and bar are better for carving. Also a electric chainsaw might be easier to usw than a gas powered one.
I can confirm that the ms170 will need constant maintenance..I completely rebuilt mine last summer...I got parts from Amazon Germany although I live in southern Ireland..half price of cost here!

This is awesome Scott ! This right here is why I make these videos man . If you have questions ask ! I will do my best to either answer the question or make a video to help you out .
Thank you !!!! Very much appreciate your VID tutorial , also ,. Could I carve with any type of chainsaw? I wanna buy one for work as well as for carving meaning use the same one for both applications, thanks in advance:)
If need a saw for work and want one for carving you may want two . But an Ms 250 is a well rounded and gives you the ability to swap sprocket sizes and different bars and chains .
I know this is a “starter” video… which I’m definitely a starter to wood carving. But I own a landscaping company, and also do some tree work. With that said, I’m not new to chain saws. Do you think a top handle saw would be better to start with? My top handle is much lighter than a 170. I do have a 170 I use on a rare occasion. But it is VERY under powered I think
The only thing I have heard with the top handle saw is the control aspect. In my opinion you have more control over a rear handle saw . Especially when carving. I agree the 170 is an under powered saw but it’s just a starter . It’s a way for someone who wants to carve but can not spend a lot . The 170 works nice as a detail saw. But if I could spend the cash I would probably just jump to the already set up 200 with a dime tip bar for detail work only . I like to use my 250 and 271 for blocking
That's a great looking bear. Nice work. I'm just learning to carve. Im a carpenter for 40 plus years. I'll be watching this over and over again and maybe maybe even come close to your work. Thank you Frank
Cool video man! I've been wanting to try out some chainsaw carving for a long time and just gave it my first try. Results weren't great but I'm pretty happy with my first carving. I think the most important thing you mentioned is taking breaks when you get tired.
Hey man just want to say great work! I watch a lot of your videos and some of them I watch a 3 or 4 times. I love the emphasis on safety and I like the reviews on saws. I've been considering battery saws but I have 1/4" drive carving bars that aren't compatible with 3/8 sprockets that seem common on battery saws.
Really depends on the saw . I would double check me but I believe the Stihl Msa 160 and MSA 200 run 1/4 pitch also the MSA 120 and 140 . Again I’d double check
Nor do good beginners video. Right off the start there’s cuts made and no showing where, how deep, what angle. Probably would be a top knotch learning if he would go slower. Set saw at the angle. Show where and what then cut once. Stop show another side cut stop look. Give us time to look.
Kyle, you ROCK! This video is what gave me hope on 'bears'. I followed it to a 'T' and for my very first, I thought it came out pretty nice. I say that to say this, a coworker saw it after all of this time and wants to buy him. I'm currently using your technique with sawdust/glue mix to fill in the cracks that have formed. I'm gonna give him a makeover with sanding sealant, some airbrush work, and polyurethane. I'll be sure to post pics to your Facebook page when I'm done. Can't thank you enough for the time you spend investing in us! 🙂
@@KyleHallwoodworker I'm worried about kickback! My brother was showing me how the saw jumped up at his face, he didn't have time to react. Went right thro his face shield. His stihl saw has chainbreak and antikickback features so I guess it don't always engage. I knew about kickback before, but it's got me worried now that he was telling me how sometimes you can't fight the power tool and how quick it can happen. He worked at uncles sawmill so he knows how t use a chainsaw. I looked for a video about kickback from you but didn't see one. Only about that wheel of death. Thought it might be a good video for beginner carvers!
Hey Kyle I gotta ask. I live in upstate NY as well in a neighborhood like you. Do the neighbors give you a hard time with all the noise? I am thinking about electric saws for that reason but I would just rather go with gas. I dont want to get the expensive battery saws with limited run time so I was thinking about the Stihl corded saw for detail work. Do you think the corded saw can do what you are doing in this video? What are your thoughts on this. Thanks for any suggestions and opinions !!
Honestly I know they do not like the gas so that’s why I spent the money on battery saws . I started with gas first because they are more affordable. No if I’m carving at my place and need to do a bigger carving I block out with gas and finish with battery
@@KyleHallwoodworker Hello Kyle. Soon to purchase the Chainsaw that you endorsed. Have used one occasionally but I spoke to a professional woodsman who will teach me regards to safety and maintenance long before I attempt anything. Your post has given me inspiration. Thanks again.
I run all stihl chains. I believe the yellow chain is full chisel which I run on my bigger saws . I run the green chain which I believe is semi on my smaller saws . The yellow cuts faster great for blocking the green cuts slower nice for detail work in my opinion.
Ms170 conversion items needed to make a carving rig...
Bar: 3005 000 3205
Sprocket kit: 1123 007 1029
Chain: 3661 005 0064
I bought that same chain saw just for what you are taking about. Mine works great.
Nice work with the first hand view. Wish the camera didn’t die.

Hello, I have a question I am a beginner just started making pumpkins and little things. I live in Atlantic Canada and was wonder what would be better a soft wood or hard? Thank you
I prefer soft wood . Less sharpening the chain and the saws don’t have to work as hard . Also it carves faster in my opinion
@@KyleHallwoodworker thank you so much in just the last 3 days my carvings have really came a long way, thanks to your videos. Thank you 😊

I just got the stihl msa 70 c. Only have the stock bar so far, so this tutorial helps a lot. Thanks for sharing.
How green/seasoned is the wood you're carving? Is it better for it to be wetter or drier, or somewhere in the middle?
Sometimes very green . If I can the log will sit a year then I will carve it . Even with that the wood is still wet .

What do you think about electric chainsaws for carving?
I run the Stihl msa160, msa200, msa220 all battery saws . I do not have corded electric
You are a fantastic teacher really really good. What's the deal with using electric chainsaws?... is it an idea to screw the log down when it gets light and wobbles
Thank you glad I can help . I have invested in battery saws as I live in town and do a lot of carving there . The battery saws are much quieter
Can a battery powered chainsaw perform plunge cuts?
They can . They are not going to win any speed competition but they can do a plunge cut
I varnished my tree sculpture and it rained on it before it had time to dry, The tree now has a whitened colour to it. Do you know how to fix this?
Sometimes it will fix it’s self if it sets all the way out of the weather . Otherwise have to sand and re do it

@@violetshadow3184 I usually mention it throughout tutorials . Not a bad idea though

Thank you !
Any specific type of logs a beginner should be looking for ?
Pine is the easiest to carve and easy on the saws
@@KyleHallwoodworker ok thanks Kyle I appreciate the feedback
You’re welcome
@@KyleHallwoodworker Do you think the corded Stihl will work rather than getting the battery ones you use?
I don’t see why not . You can always look at RPM and chain sizes also
Love this man's laid back way of teaching.
The "Bob Ross" of chainsaw carving.
Thank you. 👌
Thanks Stanley !! Bob Ross was the man !
It is so appreciated.
“Bear with me” I see what you did there!
Thank you for this video! You rock man!
You’re welcome!
Nice and usefull Video! Greetings from Italy
Thank you Giorgio ! From Italy wow ! That’s awesome. Thank you for sharing. I enjoy seeing where everyone is from .
Do you prefer a semi chisel or full chisel chain on your stock bars for carving?
I run all stihl chains. I believe the yellow chain is full chisel which I run on my bigger saws .
I run the green chain which I believe is semi on my smaller saws . The yellow cuts faster great for blocking the green cuts slower nice for detail work in my opinion.
