That's how I got started....my first attempt was an eagle....sold it 2 days later for $175....I was hooked. 37 years later and my back is so bad that I can't hold a chainsaw up for more then 5 minutes. It was so enjoyable that after a few years I was able to look at a piece of wood and immediately be able to see what I could make out of it...whether it was an eagle, owl, bear, or whatever...it just became something that people wanted to buy....but the years of handling those logs and chainsaws caught up with me, on top of the different construction jobs that I had......I really miss that part of my life.....so great job, you did absolutely fine for your first time.
Absolutely, positively, card carrying awesome! I spend more time with yarn than anything else. So, when I see a wood worker doing his thing, I am totally blown away! Great job!!!
Very nicely done! If someone asked me to do a chainsaw carving, I expect the log would end up looking like a chainsaw! Really good likeness of a bear cub, especially on the first try. You've got a very good eye for proportion and detail! Thanks for sharing!
Really good! No one could tell by the finished product that you were bearly a cub with chainsaw carving. Sweet placement at the pond. Thanks for all you do.
Incredible!!.. this is on a whole nother level mr. Humphrey.. Great job! Glad to hear you're doing well, thank you for the video and update on your recovery. Cheers!
I have been watching your videos in a sort of binge way. I went as far back as I could and this is where I’m I’m currently located. What a beautiful job for a first attempt!! You are a renaissance man through and through. Best Regards Fred Thomas
I am loving how that turned out, great job. I also love the way you show the work of some of your subscriber's, there sure is a lot of talent out there. Wishing you a speedy recovery..
I can't imagine how you figured out what wood wasn't bear and what was bear and should remain. But I'm sure glad you did! Burt is a fine young fellow. Good to hear your shoulder is healing well. Please keep up the good work so we can all watch you for years to come.
wow! You chainsawed that bear out of a log with the same control and sure handedness as you have with a sharp bowl gouge when you turn a bowl. That was a joy to watch. Thanks for sharing.
So nice to see you!!! You did a wonderful job with Burt! I loved how all the animals were gathered around him at the end. The deer kept checking him out. Too cute! You live on some gorgeous property! Also, I hope you're feeling well! Keep on healing.
i can’t imagine sculpting anything this well the first time or any time, out of clay or wood or balsa.... you have a very creative eye and must know your chainsaw well!
Rod I have just decided that you can do anything that you put your mind to. You really are amazing and fantastic, this little bear is amazing. I am glad to hear that you are doing well and getting better. Just don't get impatient and start working to soon. God bless you and your family. Semper Fi my dear Rod.
I am truly impressed, he is adorable. All that with a bum shoulder. I've always wanted to try chainsaw carving. Been afraid to do it. Just might have to give it a shot. Thank you for sharing this.
Ahhh! Now I understand your emoji hint 🐻 when I told you I was looking forward to more non-bowl videos! 😂 This is fantastic. Also impressive for a first attempt. Thanks so much for sharing. Have a speedy recovery.
Great to see you back at it again Rod. Hope your recovery goes quickly and perfectly look forward to seeing lots more carving this one is awesome especially when you say it's your first waooooow
Chainsaw fumes and sawdust. Now that's what I call a perfect day. Seeing what you have done with free wood I wish I could have someone dump that much on my property. Keep up the beautiful work and thanks for sharing with us.
Great looking cub carving!!! Burt looks at home with the deer and raccoons. 🐻 Also, the creations that were sent by your subscribers were wonderful. Lots of talent. Hope you are healing well. Praying for you. God bless.
Rod: Is there anything you can’t do with wood? Every time I see one of your videos, I watch in awe on what you can do!!! God has blessed you with a wonderful talent.
Absolutely amazing, Rod. I was fascinated the whole time. You have a real eye for art. I always enjoy seeing your other projects as much as your turning. I'm confident that my first attempt and every other one would wind up as chips, sawdust and smaller pieces of firewood. I think this is the first time I've seen you in front of the camera.
I'll bet you could do this! I'll be doing more, certainly a lot to learn.. I'm not a camera hound, I always just try to focus on the project which I always feel is more important than my mug, lol. Thank you!
Hi Rod, Sorry for being late to the party watching this video but I am in Ireland on holiday. Great job carving the bear and its your first attempt. Perhaps the physios will get you to crochet a blanket for it as part of your recovery. LOL. Glad to hear everything is on track. Cheers, Huw
Fantastic I can’t believe it is the first time you have done a chainsaw carving. It looks really good and the animals in your garden seem to like it too
This is a nice change up from the turning. Turned out beautifully. You're a true artist, able to go from one medium to another have such great results. Would love to see more of these carvings if you've got the itch for it now. Also, hope you get well soon!
I thought, you have got to be kidding with you doing this so soon after surgery. Then you said it was done in April. I thought that is more like it. You absolutely amaze me on the lathe, and now this. This display could definitely be used in the "Smokey the Bear" commercials. Great Job. God Bless, and as always, BE SAFE! Anchors Away.
Thank you brother! yeah, I have a couple more videos pre recorded to publish while I'm recovering. Looking forward to getting back to it though!! Semper Fi

Wow. That is really impressive. Good luck with your shoulder! I just had glaucoma surgery in my right eye on May 13. They put a drainage tube in my eye. Now I still see very blurry but the doctor said it will clear up in a few weeks. I hope he is not lying to me. In the meanwhile no UA-cam videos and no woodworking. It took everything just to text you this and watch your video. Ok now need to rest my eyes. Keep up the great videos!
Thank you my friend. I hope your recovery is fast and full! I know you're going through the same woodworking withdrawals that I am...
Friday morning hair ritual, my daughter double checked, "this is the guy that likes the snow like us, right?" I told her yep. She asks, "what is he doing with a chainsaw?" I said carving a bear. "Oh.... is his other machine broken?" Nope, just trying something different. "Well, he did a good job, just weird seeing him do something different." She's funny sometimes.
