I ALMOST bought this motor and now I am not feeling good about it. Thank you for posting, definitely let us know if the replacement holds up.
I will do! I'm hoping it does.
Even with 2.0 losi 2.0 x18 t gear
How'd you know this what I did today???
It's not the motors fault. I snapped the shaft on a castle creations on my granite grom for the same reason. Getting a gear mesh on these cars is not easy. I ended up using a 17t robinson racing pinion on the stock motor mount. Even though the mount is made for a 16t, it didn't mesh well with another 16t once I swapped to a motor with a 2mm shaft.
@@mesothelioma6465 I bought a 17t pinion thinking the same way but it turned out to be the bore. 18t Losi pinion on there now and it sounds much better.
The Typhom Grom is such a cool RC. In stock form it's just a bit underpowered but still fun to drive. Upgrading to brushless is a PITA but watching videos like yours really helps. My problem was fitting in the ESC.
That was my concern with the Typhon Grom, fitting the esc. So I went the 2 in 1 route and, well, you know what happened 😳 😂
I really hope they come out with a brushless version, would sell like hotcakes!
I put the Hobbywing 16bl30 with the 4500kv motor in my Typhon and I had to move the esc to the battery tray and my switch and reciever to on top of the servo. I use some shorty 3s packs and it runs pretty well. It's not terribly overpowered like the Castle systems. The servo is very slow though. That'll be next if the diffs hold up.
I never understood people throwing Castle systems in these micro rcs. 🤔
@@bigbristv I did too until I got it through my head that it's not an investment, it's a hobby. Therefore whatever is fun for you, or me is the point. Also money is relative so a $150 Castle system might not be much to some people and to others just getting the car is a stretch.
Great video 🤗. Liked and subbed. Bummer about the motor shaft, but you had a great attitude. 38 is moving for a grom 👀. Looking forward to seeing how the TyphonG plays out 🍻
Bro, thanks! Don't watch the first vid where I took it out on the track. You won't like it. I've seen you drive bro. Legend. 🙌
LMAO 😂. Thanks Brother, I love RC and watching too. If it's about having good times I'm watching 🍻
@richduperbash2966 Amen brother, Amen! 👍
You could tell the mesh was too tight when you first started it. When I did mine on the mini B I had the same issue so I pushed on the motor to move it slightly while tightening onto the mount and the mesh felt and sounded good.
Yeah, that mesh situation was sus from the start. I have a proper pinion coming today with the motor so I'll explan later 😉👍
@@bigbristv awesome, hopefully it works out cause it looks clean with no esc mounted.
@72voltz17 that's what I'm hoping. This thing is too tiny to be stuffin all that stuff in 😂
You never lied bro. Trials and tribulations, I gotta say you're good at working on stuff like myself and it definitely takes patience. ✔️😵💫 Try a hobby fans combo maybe. I been having no problem with any of they're products YET*.
Thanks man, they're sending me another motor/esc tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'm gonna have to move on. Really hoping it works tho 😕 🙏
@@bigbristv I heard that! We have the Hyper Go brushless buggy. It's pretty good. Just blew out the front differential though. 🤒 Been doing to many donuts. Being I've had the Mini b also. I would recommend that over the grom or the Hyper Go. Just drives better, and better design as well... Wish I kept mine.
@james215RC you're not helping James. Now I have to get a mini b 🙄
😂🤣👍
@@bigbristv right 😂You won't regret it. It handles, drives better & is easier to work on / upgrade. ✔️
The problem you had with the motor is that the shaft on the motor that comes stock is 2.3mm and the shaft on the brushless motor you purchased is only 2mm, so the pinion would be unbalanced which will brake the shaft, the losi mini b pinions are 2mm so will prevent the shaft breaking again👍
I appreciate you big homie. Here's to hoping the Losi pinion I put in there holds up. Now, any insights on stopping this rain? 😂👍
@bigbristv I'm in the UK, it's done nothing but rain for months now, waiting for my typhon grom to arrive, expected April 18th, ordered the same motor, I already have a few of the losi pinions I fitted to my Granite grom, works perfect 👍👍👍
@Big_Gazzz-RC UK = rain 😂 I feel you brother. Stay dry and keep having fun regardless 😉👍
Alway buddy
Got the 2mm bore pinion and everything was fine. Until it wasn't 😅
Do you have a link for the blower? I don't think your motor shaft sizes where the same. Start there! Great vid!👍
Here you go: CLEVAST Compressed Air Duster - 3... www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPHN7N2L?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I got it for like 22 bucks so look out for their sales. Thanks for the tip!
Awesome thank you so much for the link!!
No worries 👍
Great video my man. 💪🏽 gonna be doing the same thing to mine when it turns up in the UK 😂😂 subbed.
Thanks bro, I really appreciate it 🙏
I never spend my money on Spectrum. Every one of my Spectrum esc's has caught fire, but 1. Also, all my Spectrum steering servos also die. Spend the extra on Castle Creations. Id like to see that lil Grom hit 100mph. And yes, a TLR version would he sweet. Thanks for the video.
👌
damn i had high hopes for that motor combo, i didn't read the comments but i see this one isnt the key now. 38 is moving but maybe this was meant for a lighter car, i think the losi mini t and b come with this motor?
Yeah, the brushless models. I think this was supposed to replace the Dynamite setup of years ago. Don't give up yet bro. I installed the stock pinion which was a no-no.
I have a Hobbywing Quicrun 16BL30 ESC with a 2435 G3 6500kv motor combo on mine. 52 mph. It's a direct fit.
I was so tempted to buy another and use that combo. May still do it at some point. Thanks!
I have that set up in my mini t nice to know it’ll work in the grom
@Farmerfpv What size and brand pinion gear with that Hobbywing setup? Does the stock brushed motor mount work with it or did you replace it too?
I used this: Losi Pinion Gear 18T 0.5M 2mm... www.amazon.com/dp/B08PNTBPR5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Thanks! Did you use that pinion gear with the Spektrum motor/ESC in the video after getting a new motor? How are your results so far?
literally just installed that pinion. I'm really hoping it works out. Were you pushing it really hard?
I know when I contacted Horizon they do not have a brushless system they recommend for the Grom. We live and learn as someone else said. At least you can get your money back. I thought it was neat when you first tested it after the install and you said "oh my goodness." I want to replace mine with a brushless system, but the diameter of the motor shaft seems to be an issue.
I lost money on that buy which kinda turned me off to it.
@@bigbristv Just in case you interested, about 7 months ago on the channel called "Do RC" converted his Granite Grom to brushless and he used an inexpensive brushless motor and inexpensive Hobbywing esc. The motor was the correct size and had the correct motor shaft size. It was much faster on 2S, not insane, and it ran well. You may want to take a look at it. I just watched it today.
Thanks 🙂
@@bigbristv You're welcome.
I forgot to mention that the 53 mph involved a 3S battery. A late note is from Arrma says that using the 3S battery with that rig would invalidate my warranty. Can't worry about that. There's not much left for them to warrant. Servo and upgraded diffs I guess.
😂
The Spectrum 6000 KV motor is a 2 mm shaft. The stock pinion for the Typhon grom it's 2.3 mm
Thanks, I found that out the hard way. Second time around I installed a Losi 2mm 18t pinion and the motor blew up 😂
I made 51 mph, yesterday, with the smaller of the two Castle rigs being the one recommended for the Typhon. I should have seen this upgrade coming, and I'm not sure the fact they offer a set of prefigured motor mounts was mentioned.(I edited this message when I figured out how to do it. I made 51 mph, not 53.)
There's a group of motor mounts out there, 1 each for every different pinion size. You could modify the stock one with some drilling 🤔
@@bigbristv I bought and used the available motor mounts kit. Far as I know that's working fine. The adjustable mounts appeared really hard to use because you can't see your mesh very well.
@robertgoldsmith5949 true
Same thing happened with mine! I ran it once and was fine, then took it out a second time and snapped off
Which motor were you using?
@@bigbristvthe same motor, i tripple checked everything after my first run and looked fine. Ran it a second time and same thing like you “pinion came loose” nah whole shaft snapped off
@lalo_castillo 🤣
whats good Bigbrist, if you can check out the surpass hobby 4370 kv brushless 540 and 550 motor that can run with a 80amp or 120 or 150 amp ESC you can run it on 3s or 4s lipo battery's with the proper pinion gear or spur-gear you can achieve the speeds you want and wont break the wallet and check out the offroad track in the Bronx it's outdoors and free, I was with the first crew of guys a long time ago making and setting up the track with the guy from Bruckner hobby's in the Bronx, good luck with your setup and stay blessed PS i'm out in Texas now use to live in the Bronx.
Thanks for the tips bro! That track in the BX is not what it used to be unfortunately. I'm tempted to go out there and try to get a group of guys to fix it up. I've seen vids of it years ago and wish I knew about it back then. I'm also from the BX.
Stay well, bro.
its been 14 years, i'm out in Austin Tx now My children still live in Bronx blvd not to far from that track, I see you like RTR kits have you ever tryed to build your own off road Truggy or Buggy Kit like a Kyosho or associated and Mugen kit.
did you ever get this set up to work with a proper pinion or does the shaft still break ?
I did put the proper pinion in there (2mm bore) but the motor quit after 2 seconds. 😮 Never got the chance to take it outside.
Do you think this system would work in the granite grom? Its my favorite small car but its a pain to get stuff to fit without it being a mess
Honestly I wouldn't try it in the Granite grom due to the space constraints.
Did you reuse the stock pinion? I think that pinion has a 2.3mm bore and the brushless motor you got has a 2mm shaft. That might be why things went wrong, if the centers of the shaft and pinion weren't aligned. Just something to look into maybe. Anyways, thanks for the video!
I appreciate that and will look into it. They're sending me a new motor today, I ordered a 17t pinion so I'll make sure to check it. Thanks 👍 😊
Just looked into it and you are correct! I thought it wouldn't make a difference but apparently .3mm does. I ordered a Team Losi 18t .5M pinion gear. Thanks again!
The problem with a fixed motor mount and having different size pinion bores is now the gear mesh is gonna be off. .15mm to e exact I think.
@jayinman7379 where were you when I was doing this? 🤣
Thanks man, I appreciate it 🙏
Its a nice lil car, just cant go back to the lil cars. 1/8 scale and bigger
I feel you but there are some advantages to the tiny cars. Especially the rely well built ones. We'll see how long she lasts. She's already broken a motor 😂
@@bigbristv That was just crazy
This is the 2nd motor with a snapped shaft I've seen on UA-cam....Same motor too.
Seems to be a thing. I got out quick and it made me not want a mini b brushless, too.
I have the same problem with my Granite Grom, snapped the shaft. Was running a Mamba Micro and the shaft snapped. Not sure what the problem was. I used stock gearing. Thought Castle was top of the line but it broke.
What's the shaft diameter of the motor you snapped? If it's not 2.3mm there's your issue. At least that's what happened to me.
@bigbristv think the 0808 Castle has a 2.5mm shaft. But I did run slightly bigger tires and it was 3s. That's the hobby. I got 29 other Rc's to wretch on. Lol. I'll figure it out.
I know Arma recommends the smaller of two motor sizes in that line from castle. I had to get the 17 T pinion in the 2 mm shaft size. Losi product on Amazon. Also got the kit of pre-configured motor mounts Arrma sells. Yes, it's been a pain getting all that in my Typhon, but I made 51 mph yesterday with 3S. 3S invalidates my warranty, but I don't care really. I upgraded the diffs.
@robertgoldsmith5949 sounds good. I didn't pay attention to the difference in shaft size since I went spektrum and it didn't turn out too well. I had better results with my Mojave grom
Put that exact motor in my typhon grom didnt last 2 batteries.
Ah man 😮 thanks
Also used the losi 2.0 mm 18t pinion just got too hot. Tried it last weekend.
@@davidpunches237 literally just installed that pinion. I'm really hoping it works out. Were you pushing it really hard?
No it just ran too hot even with the fan running on pavement. No Bashing. Just flat straight runs.
It did look really good and was clean just didn't work on that buggy. Works great with no problems on the much lighter mini b maybe even too good.
Stock pinion and mount esc is too light. Not enough amps.
Keep going...
