I have been searching all over for this exact thing. I am using a video instead but thank you so much for this tutorial. This is a huge game changer for me. :D Now to see if this still works in Blender 2.8 :D perhaps you might be so kind as to make an updated tutorial on this for 2.8 (assuming things are different)
Good informational tutorial. My only issue (and it's not really with the tutorial) is why, on a more general level, we need to use several scale nodes to make this work? Intuitively (to me) I would think if you go through the trouble of tracking points, creating a plane and aligning 4 corners, the scale would be set. At which point if you needed it to be bigger or smaller than where you pinned the 4 corners, THEN you'd need to use scale. Odd it doesn't work that way. Nice work none the less!
Dan LaSusa The scale is there because the render size could be different from the video / image input. If it was default behavior you might get a scale on a scene that you didn't want until after you messed with it. They could maybe add a check box that said you wanted to always scale to render size anyway, though.
Why would you track a point outside the plane? The parallaxing of that point compared to the points on the plane seem like they would cause a distortion if there were large movements.
Hold it, why do you need the mask if you want to composite the spaceship behind it? You can just mix the spaceship with the footage and then mix the billboard overtop.
It's a pleasure to watch your tutorials.
Kenan Proffitt Thanks for this video Kenan. You make great tutorials. Looking forward to seeing more.
Great Tutorial, excellent delivery and instruction. Please keep 'em coming!
Crazed Carebear Thank you! :)

This is one of the best ones yet! BUT can we please do this on Blender 2.8? PLEASE!!!!
its the same process on 2.8. I'm using 2.82 and had 0 trouble doing it.

Fantastic!! :D Thanks for this

Very helpful :)
could you do a motion capture tutorial?
Hi, Can you use Blender to replace the sky in a panning shot?
Hold it, why do you need the mask if you want to composite the spaceship behind it? You can just mix the spaceship with the footage and then mix the billboard overtop.
In my video tracking point loss his tracks how to fix it
how would you rotate the ufo? instead of using an image of ufo, how about a 3d model?
Same thing, just make the animation of the UFO and add the image sequence node instead of the image node or video node if it is rendered to a video
master
hi man! I could achieve the same result using the blender internal?
+João Bennington Hello :) yes you could!
+Kenan Proffitt Thank you and I would ask a tutorial that but using the internal blender, for people who have a basic computer
What do you do to export the movie to your desktop after you're done? I've tried it but everytime it just exports black nothingness.
Have you connected everything to your composite node?
Anything you want to export needs to be connected there.
When I pressed create plane track, Blender crashed. Ive Done this multiple times. HELP!!!
OMG. I bought Mocha. Send the aliens for me now!
What version of Blender is this??????????????????????????????????
He's using version 2.75.
You probably don't need the answer now, but I thought I'd tell you any ways.
Adam Thompson-Sharpe thanks, because I still needed to do this for a movie I'm working on.😂😄
