Reuben and Cherise 3/18/91

- This is from an audience recording. There is a soundboard widely available, but I actually prefer this because it better captures the crowd reaction. And I love how that comes in waves as more and more people realize what the song is.
I was there and part of that second wave when the lyrics start... 20 years later, that's one of the clear memories of a great night.
listening to this makes me feel like jerry just gave me the warmest hug on the coldest night during the coldest winter.
Me too, man (: me too
That's because he did.
Saaaame
I miss Jerry. I feel him reaching through the infinite. I just finished watching the Prime doc Long Strange Trip..his main goal was to create something that was not finite, and timeless. He definitely achieved that.
Don't mind me crying over here ❤❤❤❤
Sean H: he isnt done touching lives. Jerry's legacy isn't going anywhere.
so awesome. there will never be anything remotely as cool as a grateful dead show
Not even a resurrgence of the Greek Mysteries????
John Frank
possibly not.
Jeff Clemetson Totally agree. Those were the days...
Jeff Clemetson never ever some day we will see Jesus and jerry his children
Never ever ever. 🌹
Miss you, Jerry. This gives me chills...
Few songs evoke a crowd reaction as powerful as Reuben and Cherise. I love it!!
The first R and C anyways
It was like someone turned the place upside down. What a night!
1991 was 1 of my absolute favorite years as an "audience participator." I remember dancing my skirt off to Loose Lucy @ Nassau Coliseum, just boogeying down in my drawers & delighting the mens. That was also the year I took my Mom to the show on 3/30 & the encore was Attics, her fave Dead tune. Now that she's gone, I'm damned glad I have that memory.
She's glad too! And about those knickers......lol.
@@ericschmuecker5573 The knickers were from the '73 run - just sayin'
Year i was born lol
It was a fine thing to have danced in your vicinity, shine on...
1991 was the year I saw the majority of my eighty something shows. First GD show was Irvine '89 when I was 15. Saw two more Brent shows: 5-5-90 & 7-12-90. His accidental death hit me hard. After I graduated from HS I did Summer Tour, moved to Humboldt for five years & drove to Bay Area for as many Oakland, Shoreline, Cal Expo shows as possible. JGB @ The Warfield was like church for me. My dog is named Rue en cuz it's my fav Jerry tune. What a genuine love story. Really touched my soul first time I heard it live at the Wiltern in '90. I had a powerful connection to this sacred soul. So many up close, exchanges of eye contact & mutual smiles. He put me through six weeks at Betty Ford via a wealthy young fan. I kid you not, his soul has visited me at least three times in lucid dreams. We do not die. We are eternal consciousness of light in these avatar shells. Anyway, '91 was blissful. Chinese New Year, Spring Shoreline, Vegas, R.F.K., Giants x 2, Soldier Field, Sandstone, Jerry on the Eel & two days at Squaw Valley, Halloween run!!!!, 12/30/91!!! So many fond memories at the tender age of 17. Thanks for the share sister.
My best friend and I drove my '76 Honda civic cvcc from Mich. to these shows. This is but one of the highlights. My memories are more valuable than my bank account, by far..
To this very day still the best times of my life.. 100’s of shows... they taught me how to dance!!! Can you dig it!!! No regrets... the madness in the lot.. the tanks... the skanks.. all the homelessness... I got lice in a van from Eugene, Oregon to Chula Vista, Ca.. had to shave my dreads... all of it!!! The absolute time of my life! I love you Jerry... i still celebrate your life daily.. like listening to all our brothers and sisters lose their minds when you and bobby decided finally to play Ruben and Cherise!! Ps... My favorite tune... ever
A buddy of mine showed up and said, come on...we`re going on tour. I lived on the west coast of Canada and had a `76 camperized Chevy van. So I grabbed my shit, and we were on our way. Made it there one day before this show and got in 2 out of 3 shows the whole tour...all the way through Orlando. This R & C was the highlight.
like waves against the bandstand dancers broke...!
I miss him so much, he gave his heart and soul to us...and we are forever grateful..
Gives me goosebumps when the crowd erupts! Tearing it up, too!
INDEED! wow...
Agreed from the heart, my friend. I had to one up it, though. But you are spot on.
Goosebumps every time with the crowd. Same with the Loose Lucy being performed for the first time in roughly 15 years circa 1990 or there abouts
One of the biggest regrets in my life is I didn’t have the ear or appreciation for this band like I do in my late 40’s
It comes when it comes :)
Never too late my friend.
Right there with you man
We went to our first shows in ‘92. Metalheads looking to party in the parking lot. I had never heard or seen music like that.
Been a massive fan since.
I swear I've listened to this 200 times........Whew!!
This one still gives me chills, like right now. In fact, I just screamed out loud, sitting here in my office, as the crowd roared. Yes indeed, I saw some of those shows, when they played this... I still feel that energy from the crowd. I remember vividly, hearing that they had played this for the first time. I was on that tour, after this awesome first time, for the dead to play Rueben & C'erise. When we didnt do certain shows, would call 1900RUNDEAD for setlists. It was fun to know what was played. It would have been great to be there for that 1st time. They played it at Buckeye Lake, in that late spring/early summer, and I was at that show...anticipating and hoping for a Reuben and C'erise, I called it at the very first note...kinda knew it might pop up. Some kid, and his gf were standing next to me. He went "pfffft, that's a Jerry song, they won't play..." A few seconds later, everyone at the lake, including this enlightened one, realized it was R & C. I laughed and said "told ya." hehehe
I was at Buckeye Lake... what a first set. Picasso Moon opener was hip/fresh and they followed with a well-paced Sugaree. R and C a few tunes later
This was my first show and knew right then it was far from MY last..TILL 95 at least!♡♡♡
Love it
Goose bumps every time
Furthur has a great version of R&C
crowd response brought tears to my eyes....reminds me of the first unbroken chain....thanks
emblemsluck what is link for 1st unbroken... ?
Put chills on my arms
made me CRY......Funny, I was pondering the crowd response for unbroken chain compared to this....wasn't at either show, but my younger brother caught that unbroken......this sounds ssssoooooooo fkng good.....miss it alot
archives omni the year they broke unbroken look for ear monitor recordings in the top offerings. is incredible.
archives @@twofathoms1649 Go to the Omni in Georgia3-29-95
I'd give 10 years of my life to see him play just one more time.
This brought tears of joy to my eyes! I was there, and it was awesome!!
Crowd response escalating at the end jam to ! Yes I was there and didn’t know enough yet to understand why people were so excited , ha
I was in front row center, and saw the reaction from Bobby! Bought the tickets outside for face, and the guy I bought them from said GO TO THE SEATS! I was just trying to get in.. Never forget this night! Been following Dead and Co. around... Vibe is good, but nothing like it was here... Miss Jerry every day!
I do to Brother
Its songs like these from Jerry that keep me keeping on!
The crowd response can restore my Faith in humanity
. "cherise was dressing as pirouette in white when a fatal vision gripped her tight" just to hear the Dead playing that up blows my mind.
I just want Harbor Freight to know, that because of that ad that interupted my bliss I will never ever shop there. 💀⚡️🌹
Ist crowd reaction is STRONG for heads. THEN its sheer pandemonium!!!!! Smiling ear to ear, tears and full body chill bumps all at once!!!! Ill be chasing that feelinf for a hot minute! Then around 6:30 crowd blows up again for the keys. Ahhhh!! So needed
Ahhhh is right! What an overwhelming feeling.
I was at this show .i still get cold chills when i hear it.im 45 been listening to the dead since i was a little kid.
Always love a quality audience tape over a soundboard. It just gets so much closer to capturing the essence of the moment. Totally love the audience response.
Visceral, emotional, and passionate are a few words that come to mind when hearing this rendition. Powerful as the wind and waves. Thank you Jerry and bless your spirit.
The breeze would pause to listen in, before going its way again!
"Reuben Reuben tell me truly true: I feel afraid and I don't know why I do".. being played out in the grateful dead. Mind blowing
So, so sweet. The energy is palpable. Just hearing it gives me chills. Caught the final GD version of Rubin and Cherise at Buckeye Lake in on 6-9-91. Called the song and surprised the shit out of some people standing next to me. This is definitely one of my all time favorite show moments ever.
Love the sound of heads losing their flipping minds at this - was there and it was a GREAT surprise. Always loved it when they'd pull something out this way.
jddjjfjjrufurud :(toti i uucjuffjj
Thank you for sharing the audience recording. The one time a soundboard is less valuable.
He brought out more raw emotion than anyone I have ever seen. You would laugh and cry in the same hour. The best time of my life!! Miss them days and friends that aren’t here anymore (Pugs). Miss Jerry. 😪
Dude at a coffee shop I worked at showed me this a few years ago and it’s still a go to for incredible moments in time. Amazing
If you could see my heart, you would know it's true. There's none, Cherise, except for you, except for you. ...... if I lie may I fall down cold.
The Gratful dead are sooooo COOOL!!!like dude
m legeaut beautiful tune, usually performed by the Jerry Garcia Band, of which I a huge fan
m legeautt How come I cannot #1 your comment??
A Package and some Jack always at my side, greatest times of my life, now I die
My cousin Timmy had just handed me a joint as Jerry started singing......I swear, it was some kind of magical moment. Wasn't expecting it. I was literally screaming with joy. The faces around me, will never leave me. Nothing but huge smiles, laughing cheering, screaming, singing. What a moment. Everywhere I looked, there was pure joy. That'll never happen in my lifetime again.
Ah....I'm okay with that. I got to see the dead.
I was somehow there. Drove across country nonstop from CA. We were freaking the fuck out.
This always makes me happy!!!!!!
I saw Jerry play this with JGB back in the 90’s and is still one of my favorite jams.
We all miss ya ! Jerry put in a good word for me will ya
I was there for all 4 nights and this was definitely the highlight. We were all astounded when Jerry started singing. Damn, I miss those days.
This is an aural portrait of gratitude.
I have a friend in her early 20s who had never even heard of the grateful dead who i am introducing their music to her. But also trying to convey the concept that it's more than music, a community but more than that even. A force that has changed lives. I think playing this for her will help her understand what this band meant to it's fans and vice versa.
I was at this show and it was a truly magical moment when the opening strains of this song rang out!
Goosebumps when I was at this show and every time I’ve listened to it since!!!!
Swoon. This song is a personal favorite and I love hearing the audience's vibes come through so clearly!
Thank you for sharing. My daughter was there with me this night. Her name was Jasmine Cherise Curiosity.
I just keep coming back for more..! month after month, year after year..
What a beautiful gem. One of the truly underrated Garcia/Hunter compilations.
Just an awesome crowd reaction that only the Grateful Dead could get. The quality is great and the sounds great and the band is freakin tight.
Heard this for first time today. Never knew GD ever played this. Brought tears to my eyes when the crowd erupted in appreciation for a song I always loved.
This is my happy song. When that first note rings, I'm grinning. I only recently started appreciating the dead and Jerry
Pure magic...ugh, I miss it!
This takes me back. I was there and the crowd response still gives me chills to hear it.
Love it! It was 3/17/91 at the cap center. Great show!!!
I needed this 🙌🏼 !
Love this tune, saw Garcia band play it a bunch, never saw Grateful Dead do it. I wish... Can only imagine the crowd response. Gorgeous kind of quirky mysterious tune. Purely Jerry. RIP Garcia
Only played live 4 times?!? Crazy. Pure joy thanks. Hug ur loved ones
Well; by the Dead, yes. Jerry Garcia Band played it hundreds of times. One of the best versions is 4/23/93. Type "4/23/93 Rueben and Cherise" into the UA-cam search and it should come up.
Same here, every time I watch this I get goose bumps and tears in my eyes. How amazing it would have been to be at this concert! Ruben and Cerise was always one of my favorite JG songs. Cats Under the Stars was the first sticker I put on my car back in my 20s. GD fans are an amazing bunch, only we would know it was the first time a song was being played or a song that hadn't been played live in X years. There really will never be another band and fan base like this and I feel so blessed to have been part of it!
Imagine what this guy would've done with 30 more years? I love you Jerry. Thanks for a life bro!!!
At that time, I was heartbroken that I missed it. If you caught this you got lucky.
Dennis Campbell...It was complete MAGIC! I'm so lucky & of course, Grateful. The Dead played Rubin & Cherise 4 times EVER! I saw 3...
i wonder if they can objectively understand how much joy they brought people.
wow the memories came flooding back! I got the chills and tears in my eyes when I heard the crowd response. I miss Jerry. So glad I toured with them for several years. Thanks for posting.
The reaction is up with the Phish audience's response to Terrapin. Oh to be part of the crowd!
That was just a wonderful show all around - the set list, the sound and the crowd outside. Thanks for posting - I know you'll never see this, but man... When they busted out R&C....
I was there .i wish my heart could be overfilled once again with the nervous excitement and Love that poorer through that hallowed hall that nite.
Holy Smokes this is awesome!
That ROAR always gives me chills !!
Goosebumps doesnt describe it enough for me, though it is spot on. Everytime i throw this on, which is daily at least three times a day, it gives me pteradactyl bumps. Then on top of those, i get goosebumps. This is hands down my fave ruben n cherise, ever.
I cant even fathom the smile jerry had in his heart knowing the love we all had for this song and the effort it took for him to let the gd play it.
He know the response it would get, but i dont think even he knew that it would be like this.
Recordings from the tapers section is some of the most emotional and nostalgic tunes I know!
Some people are just precious. Jerry is precious. I never even got to see him but even I know
This was the magic of Jerry and the Dead.....pulling out unexpected nuggets like this at times you'd never expect. Kept me goin' for years...Still listening faithfully to this day
This was absolutely the best church I ever attended.
btw, this was by far, the best one - I had searched them all that year. I was also at the Nassau show, but I think Jerry rushed through that one more, and maybe didn't do such a flawless solo at the end, like this one. thx for posting
Why oh why didn't I go to this show!? I was in Pennsylvania, I could have gone! I come back to this video every few months and always get goosebumps and tears in my eyes. Imagine being there and feeling the crowd energy!? i would love to have seen the look on Jerry's face and and the rest of the band after that crowd reaction.
I got lucky and got to see this in Orlando a few weeks later. Great song. They did Black throated wind right before it in Orlando.
Total goosebumps.
Happy Birthday Jerry!
dude that givves me chills
Fucking incredible.
This is why I love audience recordings sometimes, it transports you to another time. The man is so magical. Chills!! Miss it!
I still adore this. I was THERE.
man.. whew..
Wow I was there still get goosebumps when I hear this wow!!!!! Legendary Cap Center!!!!
Ha!!! This is AMAZING!! Once the crowd realizes the novelty of what's happening here, their roar is just....orgasmic!! I just love it! Thanks for the post, man!! This is a true celebration of fun, music and coolness ...and novelty!
Best birthday gift ever!
I was there! Thanks for this!
It's funny to see others comments about this song. It pulls the tears right out of my eyes because I had always hoped it would last forever too..........
Guy dancing in the portal near me just lost it when they busted this out. "It doesn't even have to be a Jerry show, it doesn't even have to be a Jerry show ..." He was so happy.
A lot of love in that stadium.
I miss those days. young, didn’t know much yet, no stress. 😔
I’ve heard that roar before in the Boston Garden when Larry Bird played for the Celtics
Man still gives me chills
I'm fortunate to have seen this & the other 3 shows that Spring. Couldn't believe my ears when they played Rubin & Cherise....Orgasmic!!! Also, this show has one of the most incredible Drums & Space I've ever saw or heard!!!
***** I know that I caught one of them, but I'm not sure where. Could it have been Nassau? Where were they played?
birdleso Sorry for the late response...The Band played Rubin & Cherise five times that spring & I don't think they played it ever again.
They did play it at Nassau in 1991, but I didn't see those shows. Too bad. My last show was Deer Creek Indiana July 1995 when the Asshole Gate Crashers forced the band to cancel the second show. I was so pissed that I declared, "I'm DONE with The Grateful Dead!!!" Well, we all know what happened later that month. I feel blessed to have seen Jerry as many times as I did.
+Tio Pancho They played it 4 times I saw 3 of them spring 91 lot of fun
bill warnes you are right! I guessed five, but it was four. Blessed to have seen that Landover Maryland show.
was an absolute gift from the band to the heads. and boy was it appreciated . you old heads must have FREAKED. i can listen to that outro FOREVER.
Thanks so much for posting!!!!
here are no words for how spectacular this recording is. There no way a thing is above it anywhere
Was there so loved it and flipped out
Brings a tear every time
HOLLY SHIT.. THIS IS GREAT..
Listening to this now and knowing I was in that loud crowd at the Cap Centre that night long ago sends chills up my back thinking of how much dam fun we all had on tour. Peace an love to all
thank you! the purity is evident. i love it!
This is beautiful, thank you!
