I want his visage on Mt. Rushmore. There is nothing more American than the Grateful Dead.
My favorite band all time
my son rubin was being born while jerry played him into this world on nov 9, 1993!!! i had no idea until recently when i ran across this vidio, i just got a computer & have NO IDEA WHAT IM DOING!! THIS MADE ALL MY FRUSTRATIONS MELT AWAY....JUST LIKE THE YEARS. THANK YOU WHOMEVER YOU ARE WHO POSTED IT. MUCH LOVE. SUE
Glad you enjoyed it Suzanne!
I was in Bangor, visiting my grandfather [94] who was in a home w/ a;Alzheimers..I was depressed and feeling at the edge of the universe .Heard about this show in Portland and took a chance on getting a 'miracle' ticket drove down and got in .. Changed my head all around..Happy Birthday Jer, miss ya
I missed Jerry by a few years, I was born in 97, but R&C is my favorite Jerry song and Portland is my city
mind melter! jerry is an alien from another planet musically, do all you want, no one can ever create his energy or recreate his playing and songs like this prove it to me.
GODBLESS all who read this. I'll see you at a dead show upstairs man. Be kind man ,I see you before we know it. Peace all
The dead will always be a reminder of my dear friend Tim. I know you all don’t care. He was the best friend I ever had and he’s vanished. I wish from the bottom of my heart I could just find him and catch up on years past. This guy. Good soul.
miss you Jerry. Lifes not the same without you.
+Christine Mott not the same ROX. gosdbless udo tMOTT
I have remembered this show in my mind’s eye, so many times, and JUST thought to check UA-cam to see if there might be a bootleg of it- I never thought I would find video🥹 It’s just as beautiful as I remembered it to be. I was a freshman in college at UMO, and was so lucky to see this show in such a small venue, so close to home. Thank you🙏
His solo over the chorus at the end of the video always brings tears to my eyes...RIP Jerry. I wasn't even old enough to see you while you were alive, but your music continues to be a highlight of every day.
Love those lil licks at the outro
My last time seeing Jerry. So glad to have found this video and for the moments he gave us
Cherise was brushing her long hair gently down
It was the afternoon of carnival as she brushes it gently down
Rubin was strumming his painted mandolin
It was inlaid with a pretty face in jade played in the carnival parade
Cherise was dressing as Pirouette in white
When a fatal vision gripped her tight Cherise beware tonight
Rubin, Rubin tell me truly true
I feel afraid and I don't know why I do, Is there another girl for you?
If you could see my heart you would know it's true
There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you
I'd swear to it on my very soul, If I lie, say I fall down cold
When Rubin played on his painted mandolin
The breeze would pause to listen in before going on its way again
Masquerade began when nightfall finally woke
Like waves against the bandstand, dancers broke to the painted mandolin
Looking out to the crowd who is standing there
Sweet Ruby Claire at Rubin stared, at Rubin stared
She was dressed as Pirouette in red
And her hair hung gently down
The crowd pressed round, Ruby stood as though alone
Rubin's song took on a different tone and he played it just for her
The song he played was the carnival parade
Each note cut a thread of Cherise's fate it cut through like a blade
Rubin was playing his painted mandolin
When Ruby froze and turned to stone for the strings played all alone
The voice of Cherise from the face of the mandolin
Singing Rubin, Rubin tell me true for I have no one but you
If you could see my heart you would know it true
There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you
I'd swear to it on my very soul, If I lie, say I fall down cold
The truth of love an unsung song must tell
The course of love must follow blind without a look behind
Rubin walked the streets of New Orleans till dawn
Cherise so lightly in his arms and her hair hung gently down
Some of robert hunters finest lyrics
We were blessed that JGB did this tour and made it all the way to Maine.
All he wanted to do was play the guitar and have fun. HE DID !!!
ua-cam.com/play/PLOSKHHQKHtm7XwoEiMB8V2QWaQWydsUhS.html - This version selected for our JGB and family playlist
The lead at the end.....
What a spectacular show!! General admission, open floor. Got within 20 feet of Jerry. Half of my classmates from Unity College were there. Great memories!!
Just made my morning!!
When David Kemper kicks it into the double time and it goes into barely controlled chaos...ah Muchas Garcias!!
“And her hair hung gently down “
Jerry Garcia Forever {🌶}:=}
I was at UMO (Orono) oblivious to Jerry being around. Thanks for posting.
Well, Joe Conti, there is baseball and apple pie... probably tied with the Dead in the Americanism category - the Dead being the most fun by far, and yea, neither would look nearly as good on Mt. Rushmore.
either this or Gomorrah are the two best JGB songs
Wow, that's a very fine extended jam/solo at the end. An unusually strong version of this classic rarity, nice video, good-enough audience recording. Thanks very much!
10th row Nakamichi 700s.
Good ol Jerry. We loved you more than words can tell.
I live in Maine, Jerry loved CCCC, we miss him, Furthur came this fall, thanks guys for remembering Maine heads. We Love You!
Holy Smokes!!!! I was at this and never thought a video would ever exist. Awesome!!!!
Glad you found it Chris!
Love that sweet smile Jerry offers at the end to John " That was pretty good."
Might have been a nod to Kemper : That is the kind of nimble groovy drumming that the Dead sacrificed by having 2 drummers.
Did not see any of the shows in person, but this fall 1993 JGB tour is excellent! The last period of consistent, sparkling guitar playing from Jerry. He is ON it. This show in particular was one of the best.
The shows in Rhode Island, in 1993, were outstanding!!! The shows in' a couple of Northeast States in 1993, excelled. Your comment is right on; big kudos to the guys that post these shows. Almost 20 years since his passing and all the shows are still going strong. You never hve to miss them, The Jerry Garcia Band, The Grateful Dead. LMAO let somebody chronicle all the shows on the net, and see if we have a full compilation of them!
3rd row floor nassau!
oh my. Best outro to this song I've ever heard.
Me and Susan F. were there. Stayed in York on Lighthouse Rd. It all fits into the ambiance of this show. Rainy night. First time we saw The Maker live. I can still feel in my soul. Jerry loves Ruben and Cherise. Hunter rules. Love, love, love
Jerry could still play in '93!
I was living on Cumberland Ave, in an apartment with my first girlfriend. We walked to the show with a crew of lovely Mainer friends. What a special show and a wonderful memory. I saw the Dead about 50 times in the latter half of the 80s, but this was my second and last electric JGB show (first was Hartford '89...saw acoustic Jerry and John once in '86). Nice Tangled Up in Blue as well.
Isn't it great when you can walk to a JGB or Grateful Dead show? I was in Rhode Island & wound up at a grammar school buddy of mines' house. We were catching the shows on the East Coast up from NJ. It was so cool to walk to the shows and back, I loved it. Ever since, Rhode Island has really become my favorite state. When the shows emptied out we stood around till most of the crowd left, drove off. A volkswagon beetle was picked up out of its' parking spot and put on the grass, so another car could park there . It was hilarious. The crowd would come out, TO-tally silent, the folks were just awed by the show.Nobody made a sound... It was really great to be able to hang around and then saunder along home. That was '85, I do believe, not even '86, all the '85 shows up from Virginia to Maine. It is true, the crowds, the police on horseback, cantoring on concrete??, the people you run into at the shows accidentally, the same people (Oh hi,man I saved a seat for you! Right on!) "Is this what you're like when you're not tripping?", "Man, you puddled me", "Shit, I know my friend dosed me and didn't tell me. I woke up on the racetrack with the trumpets blowing for the race to start." Meadowlands Racetrack, shit the guy had this huge hole in the front of his REALLY nice navy blue, cable stitched, red and white V-neck sweater (acid, u had to be there). Man, we fell out!. Drove, slowly, through the parking lot scene - this guy was rabid mad cause these people picked him up in Colorado, s'pposed to drive him to NJ. Well, they left him somewhere and kept his stuff. He met up with them at the Meadowlands and freaked out!! Yellin', screamin - he stabbed them. What a trip. THANKS for the memories. You know, when I look at the shows I can't stand to see, '95. God Bless Ya, Baby
+Lizzie Sangi Walked to my first Dead show in 90. Remember it like yesterday.
AtmaRising Izn't it GREAT! I like walking home the best and watching the people leaving the venue! Iz like church lots of times, People walk out , awesomed out, not speaking a word. Holding hand and looking as blown away as they are! That wz such a great thing and happy, too!!
+Lizzie Sangi Never heard quiet like that before in my life. Incredible! So silent. Like, everyone was blown back soooo far. It was the beginning for me.
AtmaRising Thaz a great way to phrase it, "Everyone wz blown back sooo far". You had it, G-R-R-EEAAT! beginning
My final JGB show and one of my favorites
Blessings to my buddies who took me to my first show in 89. Been on the Bus since then...hearing Jerry on tunes like this is such goodness for the soul!
This outro gives me goosebumps every time
Nothing like Jerry 🎸🔥⚡️🌹💀
Papa Bear at his finest.
This fall tour is vastly overlooked for its greatness and for some of Jerry's best playing in his final years. This show was far from sold out and the floor was open and a blast. You have anything from the second set?
Jerry looks like he could have been my dads brother. Something in his eyes, the curve of his nose, those glasses-I think dad would have enjoyed some of Jerry's music but never gave it a chance.
Thx 4 the post n Thank You Jerry
Thanks for posting.
Haters will always be haters, he was one of the greats that is for real........... Saw him at Squaw Valley ...
yep! u knew you were watching something special and grand unfold before your eyes! miss him everyday!
for the better part of 15yrs,everywhere i went they were there, damn hippies.best godamn bus ride i ever took! this r&c brought tears.sure do miss you jerry, thankx
He was playing the hell out of the guitar on this tour. The last one he was consistently sharp on all the way through. December with the Dead was solid but shortly thereafter it became a crapshoot.
right on! 93 was such a great (and underrated) year for the GD and JGB. Jerry was looking and sounding great after his effort to get healthy in the summer/fall of '92. Fleeting moment...
Last jgb show 4 me
So glad to have made this tour. The west coast dead tour after these shows was my last tour. Still miss Jerry!
jerry always had a way of completely blowing u away and leaving u speechless. i miss him so very much!!!!!
GOD REST HIS LOVELY SOUL......
Wow
Poor quality audience recording of an excellent high energy version in the late days saw a couple shows this tour but not this one
If you can learn anything from this song its tjst everyone is replaceable
♾💜♾
Sorry that organ playing is weak, a ton of melody opportunity wasted
I remember catching JGB at the old Capital Center in Landover, MD during the Fall of this year- sweet, sweet sound!
one of Jerry's finest pickin moments in years ,what a great performance it was
Never ceases to amaze me how Jerry can melt into a jam at any given time with nothing short of brilliance in the air!!I first saw the Dead in 93 and.pretty much went to every show I could make it to,that yearning for another masterpiece only heard once was my motivation. He didn't fail that often,I failed in life tho because I was 16 in 93 and 18 when he passed in August of 95 so the dropping out of school to chase such dreams kinda took me out of society thinking it was ok actually didn't ever see myself ever stopping tour which was not the most intelligently thought out plan for my future..IDK just throwing it out there because I would do it again, can anyone relate to this?
Beautiful version, Loved it
Love this so much !! ❤️☮️
Not sure what the source audio is supposed to be but it is reprehensible.
what a great Jerry tune..
it's like looking at Babe Ruth at this point.
most perfect!!
Jerry's noodling is the awesome most bestest!!!
True showman he loved to play for everyone 🎸🔥❤️
He had the talent to do so
gorgeous version
I so miss the days of going to the shows. Nothing but smiles and happy times. This does not exist anymore with today's music. RIP Jerry oh how I miss hearing your tearful touches on a wonderful song.
Utterly amazing!!!!
Whats the lineup for this show?
🔥🔥🔥
best jgb jam ever - the jerry solo is incredibly tight 5:55 on is what I'm talking about
Always loved when jgb played this, brings back good thoughts
Jerry's hair has some kind of strange style to it ! But what kind ???? help me out here!!!!!!
Reuben and Cherise ...
Isn't it listed on "Cats Under The Stars" as "Rubin and Cherise"?
Interesting...I think we're both correct. "Cats Down Under The Stars" is Rubin and Cherise but on Hunter's Box of Rain anthology of lyrics he spells it "Reuben and Cerise" I never realized this.
The Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland has such awesome acoustics, I wish I had been there that nite.
@SophieAmazing Totally an Irwin, it has stereo outputs, and dead mother of pearl inlays.
This is beautiful!!!
@NorCal33Family me too...the whole album hypnotic
I love Jerry...Charlie D
I'm pretty sure that I know someone who has the entire show...
Nice Vid!! Looks like Jerry is playing one of the cripe guitars.
O.K. stop holding .. do you have any more of this show??
miss him everyday capt trips thanks PanamaRedLTF u r kind peace
wow, Jerry is scary thin here. Skinnier than any other time in his life. Normally, I would think 'great for him, finally getting healthy'. But... knowing he would be dead in less than two years from heroin... I am guessing it wasn't healthy skinny. It was 'staying up for 5 days in a row shooting junk and only eating potato chips' skinny. In fact, there is a great quote about heroin, I think from William S Burroughs. It was "being a junkie doesn't kill you. it's the lifestyle you live while being a junky that kills you". Makes sense, since Jerry didn't OD. He died of heart failure trying to dry out. Look at him, he looks about 75... and he was about 50. anyhow, didn't mean to come here and complain. i LOVE this song, and I miss Jerry
Didn't mean to but you did. Jerry is reported to have smoked heroin and not shot it by the way. In a lot of ways it's amazing his heart didn't give out sooner. Everything he did was bad for his heart. Countless nights with no sleep, tons of stress, smoking since he was a teenager, eating junk food, diabetes ( a large percentage of people with diabetes die of heat related deaths and they didn't have everything else that Jerry had to combat) , not a whole lot of exercise and then there was things like cocaine, heroin. All these things can't be blamed on heroin though.
Just lost all that FAT,listen to his playing.
ur forked up
Look, Jerry marched to his own beat when it came to his, ahem, personal life. You couldn't tell him anything, and if you did you would be wasting your time. He was family and it was brutal to watch. We tried to tell him in 85, its us or the drugs. Jerry flat out told us, "i'll take the drugs." That's how that went.
dennis campbell wE STARTED this music and generation and the scene you were a part of, your life as a matter of fact, if you told Jerry, THE MAN WHO STARTED THIS GENERATION, THE PSYCHEDELIC ERA, to go to rehab. INTERVENTION? We started this era that will never be on earth again. OH, if y'all were so concerned? why didn't the people around Garcia, constantly demand he play big arenas , THAT HE HATED! The people pushing him were money hungry guidos. WE had marijuana, LSD was legal, you going to tell me you never did those white lines on the freeway. (You told him to go in rehab, yes? and you didn't use?)
'85 was the first time we talked about rehab
and three-piece suits and discussed it. No way, baby. GET the fork out of here.
A new era of PR men and Garcia was the head player of both his bands that played almost EVERY NIGHT WITH A HUGE CROWD OF PEOPLE TRAVELING WITH THE SHOWS FOR 30 YRS. YOU'RE TALKING TO A MAN ON A PAR WITH, BOB DYLAN, THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES, JIMI HENDRIX, JANIS JOPLIN, VAN MORRISON, JEFF BECK, NICKY HOPKINS.
Garcia was a good dude. He allowed you all, FOR 30 YRS, to approach him, film him 24/7, 365. YOU had no problem, "BEING COOL", hanging around Garcia. WHAT A FUCKIN' HYPOCRITE YOU ARE
and, YOU ARE A SHITHEAD, you douchebag
This is one of my favorite Garcia songs!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for posting this!!!!!!
@rhino805999 it was the "Cats" solo Jerry Irwin.
@rhino805999 It's a Cripe, "Lightning Bolt".
@rhino805999 It's a Cripe, not an Irwin.
8 days earlier I had a 3rd row floor seat ( Nassau )
would like to thank you soo much 4 this ... WOW
@mhayden15 Cripe guitar, not an Irwin.
I miss Jerry so much!!! Great vid, thanx for posting.
i think its called "week on the street"
HAAAA! That's great!! Now I can sleep!!
I love this song....Best ever
this is what its all about
I have no one but you...
@rhino805999 look it up.
