God that outro slays me every time..
Straight to the soul.
The end jam is why Jerry Garcia is my favorite musician.
Same dude. Brings a tear to my eye it’s so good. Makes you feel grateful for everything you have. I love it so much.
Jerry's voice was made for this song
If I was trying to explain to someone who Robert Hunter was, and what his writing style was like... this is the song I would play for them. Vivid, haunting, darkly colorful, and enchanting.
Imo Robert is one of the great poets of the 20th century, he finds those blends of tragedy and comedy, universal and relatable. I often think one of the things that makes his lyrics so great is the universality of it all. Beautiful, and when sung by Jerry ...nothing better.
@@squatchscoutie5893 I feel the same way about Robert Hunter, just can't put into words as great as you did. Fantastic comment.
Isn't it great we have these guys to lift or souls. For me. They're like the safety net that keeps me dropping too low when I'm down and lifts me up further when I'm high. If there is anything that is proof that music is healing to the soul it's in the chemistry of Hunter and Garcia and the entire band and Grateful Dead and co.
I know. Is this a love song. Tragedy. Still can't figure it out. Jah Herb Jah love Jah Jerry Jah rastafari praises blessings respectfully Tucson Arizona Sonoran desert 🏜️ Jah sisters Jah Trey Jah Duane Africa Ethiopia Addis Ababa Selassie I Jah
Amen to that shit!!! 😎✌️
I can’t do the slow spoken word shite of Hunter
Good old Jerry, we loved you more than words can tell.
That's a great statement and it is whole-heartedly true
Unconditional love for that soul.
RIP Robert Hunter. One of the greatest song writers ever.
I miss him too Wharf Rat
Robert Hunter was Americana in verse. True Genius. History in song.
@Swamp Yankee I second that emotion
He was a true genius songwriter
YES... from a fellow wharf rat. ❤
Missing Jerry ❤️
Cherise was the mandolin ♠️♣️♦️❤️
Yes!!!!! My interpretation as well!
This is seriously powerful shit. In an amazing way.
Damn I just love this frickin' song......I loved it from the day it came out and I never get tired of it!!!!
We miss you Jerry!!!!
Outro speaks volumes. If you could see my heart.
Thank you Jerry, Papa Bear. God Bless you Dead Heads.
Jerry ❤
Live music is one of the greatest tools for healing and happiness and when you add Grateful Dead Live or Jerry Garcia Live, its an endless platter for whoever wants it or needs it, and when you finally find IT, well theres a lifetime of true magic in the palm of your hands! NFA 💀⚡️🌹
This version is so powerful it makes me shout the lyrics with conviction and cheer wildly...yeah, that's the good stuff.😎🕺🙏🇺🇸
One of the best songs ever.
Never get tired of this song and this is an awesome version
I attended this concert and stood front row center stage during this song with a beautiful young Antioch student....who will remain nameless...one of the best nights of my life
"The breeze would pause to listen in /Before going on its way again..." "The course of love must follow blind /Without a look behind..." guitar and lyrics that make one "shiver" with delight...everytime.
So good!!
From Nola with love birdgirl
Listen to Robert Hunter live it has more verses and a different ending its my preferred version
One of the best songs ever written
Can we just take a moment to talk about the drumming on this? Extra sweet. I had to figure it out, David Kemper.
Love it. Another one that brings tears 2 my eyes everytime.
Me too.
"The course of love must follow blind. Without a look behind". Easier said than done
If you could see my heart you would know it's true.
forever grateful forever Jerry
Forever!
When I close my eyes and listen to this beautiful song, I’m transported back 30 years in time. It’s magic.
Was always amazed how much the JGB Band complimented the Grateful Dead........this band found its wings in the late 80s.......saw them in the early 70s......never scratched this musical itch near enough....thanks JGB.........
I Was There!
I feel like i'm trudging through a sweet sea of molasses and i love it man!
"I've been a miner for a heart of gold." I heard this song, and now I've found it. Thank you, Jerry.
I am getting chills listening to this..!!!!
Every time!
Man this is a good recording. This whole show has such a good feel. Not rushed at all.
Doesn't get any better than this!
During this show, I was in such a great groove. It was special to be there, and I am grateful for this volume. Danks!
One of my favorites by Jerry man. Such a great love song.
Cats in the grandstand, give em each a big hand. Anyone who sweats like that must be Allright.
It’s “Cats on the bandstand”
Masquerade began when nightfall finally woke
Like waves against the bandstand dancers broke
Oh to be 19 and on tour again.........

Absolutely Beautiful version. The jam at the end though
THANK YOU FOR RELEASING A SHOW WITH THIS SONG ON IT
This is the FIRST JG official release featuring Reuben and Cherise, one of the very most beloved Garcia/Hunter songs. It's quite overdue but nevermind that, just thank you, thank you.
It's quite a fine performance as well. It starts a bit slow but finds a nice groove, he gets the lyrics right and plays a lovely version of the end solo...
Wonderful. I will absolutely purchase this release. Thanks again!
Awesome, right!?!
Tyler Roy-Hart ur welcome Jsqrd+1
Incredibly overdue. This song does not get the play it deserves.
I aggree
At 4:50 the Jam takes flight, and then at 5:50 it’s launch time. Jerry is at super high altitude. Good god!!
one of my favorite songs ever
Holy moly. Outstanding.
I actually found this tour a little lacking compared to the 89 fall tour. But this is truly true, love it!!
Loooove this version . Especially the lead part , just beautiful
Never heard this song before spotify intro'd me to it, the second half, the instrumental, is addicting as hell, I'm glad it's as long as it is. Thank you for great music.
That's the jam, isn't it awesome. Long love Jerry

What a great show! I remember hanging out in parking garages before the show while the snow came down. The night before at the Rosemont Horizon was pretty good too! My favorite that night was "Shining Star" - can't wait to get this.
I did those same 2 shows Josh. I'd forgotten about the garages and the snow until you said it above. Thanks for the memory reminder.
I was there. Rip Jerry. President 2020
This is a really slow R&C. Usually Jerr' and the gang would play it at such a quick pace they almost seemed to stumble through the chord changes, but I have been waiting to hear them slow it down to a decent pace. Love it, love it, love it!
Jurney Metatron
best version ever! full of intention
I would say a close 2nd to my all time favorite r&c from 5--5-82 jgb oregon state prison... all accustic as im sure you already know...but that entire show was literally to kill for~! best love song i've ever heard... i get the chills everytime i hear this song~ ForeverGrateful
Agreed slow.. better for it!!
Danced my face off this night! 🌹
This is what mind blowing is all about. Is why I am a DeadHead. Truly stuck through the heart. Tell me truly true.

Haunting song
Thank you Jerry!
Can't say thanks enough! One of a kind :)
who gave it a thumbs down? great performance!
That's what I was going to say this one of the greatest love stories ever written. It's one of Jerry's greatest Tunes. They probably give it a thumbs down because they don't understand and you can't explain it to them. ;)
Best version ever
I saw the night before this one in Chicago....it was my only Jerry Band show
Much love
great show from a great tour!
I always know one just not commenting on this entire song. I've been to a Jerry Garcia man wants I've been to the dead about eight times but I tell you Jerry Garcia uninhibited will make things happen in this song as one of them

Wow!! Sounds so good!
Goosebumps
If you could see in my heart

AMAZING
This really was a great show, the set and setting were perfect, the band was phenomenal, and the atmosphere was explosive. I remember the parking garage after the show. Drums, a fire, lots of smoking and drinking, and all the military people with their dressed up wives coming from some fancy dinner having to pass all of us on one of the levels of the parking garage, that was entertaining!
Stephen Pavlik I don't remember that but man o man I miss those days
That was the hottest i had seen Jerry maybe ever...in that setting anyway. It was obvious from the get go with Cduts
I wish I could turn my headphones up right now. ya know what I mean. yeah you do.
I turned mine up just for you
Good lawd what a tune;,,,)
Cherise was brushing her long hair gently down
It was the afternoon of carnival
As she brushes it gently down
Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin
It was inlaid with a pretty face in jade
Played the carnival parade
Cherise was dressing as Pirouette in white
When a fatal vision gripped her tight
Cherise beware tonight
Reuben, Reuben, tell me truly true
I feel afraid and I don't know why I do
Is there another girl for you?
If you could see my heart, you would know it's true
There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you
I'd swear to it on my very soul
If I lie, may I fall down cold
Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin
The breeze would pause to listen in
Before going on its way again
Masquerade began when nightfall finally woke
Like waves against the bandstand, dancers broke
To the painted mandolin
Looking out on the crowd, who is standing there
Sweet Ruby Claire at Reuben stared, at Reuben stared
She was dressed as Pirouette in red
And her hair hung gently down
The crowd pressed round, Ruby stood as though alone
Reuben's song took on a different tone
And he played it just for her
The song that he played was the carnival parade
Each note cut a thread of Cherise's fate
It cut through like a blade
Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin
When Ruby froze and turned to stone
For the strings played all alone
The voice of Cherise from the face of the mandolin
Singing Reuben, Reuben tell me true
For I have no one but you
If you could see my heart, you would know it's true
There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you
I'd swear to it on my very soul
If I lie, may I fall down cold
The truth of love an unsung song must tell
The course of love must follow blind
Without a look behind
Reuben walked the streets of New Orleans 'til dawn
Cherise so lightly in his arms
And her hair hung gently down
Thanks Alan
Cherise was the mandolin.
greatest version of one of the greatest songs ever. played with such intention instead of being speedy. Kemper holds tight.
Yeah, this whole show is like that. The Cats Under the Stars from this show is also fantastic.
Agreed..
I love that bottom Rhythm that stays with you to the whole song There are three notes and then there's that bottom one that just hangs with you. You know if you don't listen to this song in the morning the rhythm of this song will stay with you all day long that's what it does for me
It was a great show with a very blusey Lay Down Sally. Very different feel than the next night in Minneapolis, which was also a great show. And since the next night in Minneapolis was the last show of the tour we were treated to a rare Jerry Band encore when he did Wonderful World (the Louis Armstrong one not the Sam Cooke one which is also great).

Awesome!
If you listen to a live audience recorded version of this the audience goes ape shit when Jerry’s outro starts. It was Game ON !
Of course Jerry does this in Milwaukee. Ha ha. MILWAUKEE!! Why not the Spectrum?
Or the following night in Minneapolis.
The mysterious beast cannot be coaxed out on command.

Man, these were the years when the JGB was SO much better than the GD.
Joseph Kuczenski
JGB at this time was almost as revered as the Dead. This band was firing on all cylinders at this time, taking new risks and exciting fans at every corner. Garcia was never happier than when he was. leading this band.
I agree.
Nonsense sonny.
Robert Murray i think hes referring to you sonny
he was in love then and relapsed and the music sounded so great when he wasn't clean unfortunately
💚
This is great. Did anyone ever do a Cajun like Doug Kershw version or zydaco Queen Ida version?

I know i was at this show and that’s all😎
This is hot fucking shit!!!
Why is you tube allowing bitcoin ads in the middle of these songs?????
holy 91oly
Thats the sticky icky funk junk near the end damn Jer
Can anyone point me to another jgb version of this song where Jerry solos on the mutron wah like he does here?
re-working of Run for the roses.
Not 100% sure when it was written but, Run for the Rose's wasn't played live until 1982 and the album was released 4 years after Cats Under the Stars
Other way around if anything. And one could also draw a similar comparison between Touch of Grey and the chord structure of this song
👍👍
Playing a little Devil's Advocate here ....... researching a long piece on how "Everything I Needed to Know I Learned From Following the Grateful Dead"-- response to the Kindergatrten book making that claim, and I came across "Reuben and Cherise" and while I found the closing instrumental break superbly played, the song itself is way too complicated and dense, both lyrically and musically, which was often a Grateful Dead shortcoming -- obviously I love the band, I'm writing a memoir with the Dead as the backdrop, or maybe it's music criticism paired with my deep reaction to the Dead -- but there are times I felt they needed to take a step back and pare down some of the excess. There's something at the core of this piece but it's a little muddled.

My first Rueben was at The Wiltern in November of 1990 ~ ua-cam.com/video/gfrmWTrgqcQ/v-deo.html ~ ("R & C" @ 1:31) . Drove up from Diego with my high school buddies. Easily my fav Hunter / Garcia tune.
This is really tricky to sing and play at the same time. For me anyway.
You're not alone in that. Cheers and good luck.
i was on this tour...not this show...
This song has always made me sad so I shouldn't listen to it. I'm listening to it. It's talking to me but why.
