- In today’s video, I’m going to talk about how to start a handmade candle business. We’ll talk about why it’s a good idea to start one, what challenges you need to watch out for as well as your overall business plan that you should follow if you want to see any success.
If you’ve been thinking about starting a handmade business but you aren’t sure which products would be great for you to make, let me to make a case for candles. I have a ton of other videos in this “How to Start A Business” playlist so feel free to check that out for other ideas if you decide that candles ultimately aren’t for you.
But let’s start by looking at the market for candles. What’s the sellability for candles and who buys them? So, candles are a great gift idea that can suit pretty much any occasion.

Winner of a video, I've been looking for "can you use essential oils in candle making?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Peyadison Peerless Prestige - (do a google search ) ? It is an awesome one off product for discovering how to make candles for fun or money without the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my work buddy got cool results with it.
I have made candles for 20+ years.
I have done really well at farmers markets and home shows.
I have tried many different styles and techniques.
I find candle making to be very rewarding. I get excited learning to perfect the science of the process.

I looooove candles!!! I think it’s time to start making some, honestly just for myself and friends/family for now, but one day later on, I’d love to start a business with it. I know there’s so much to it, so much to learn, but it’s cool that one day I could start one with something I love so much.

I actually started making and selling candles in the beginning of the lockdown, I fall in love with the candle science and the process, more room for creativity. I started to sell on etsy, but as you mentioned you are building on a platform that is not yours, so I build my own online shop and trying to drive traffic and sales too. From what I've experienced candle business does not kick off quickly in UK as in USA, please correct me if I am wrong!
That's amazing, Hani! It sounds like you have found your product! I think the market just depends on the product and who is looking at it, but I know the candle market is BIG in the USA so if you have the ability to ship here I would take advantage of that.

Branding is everything! I have a client who sells cookies online. Not the best cookies I have ever seen or tasted but the packaging is outstanding! Cookie subscription 😂 maybe a candle subscription too would be great 👍

If you have the ability, David, I say go for it. You can always invest in help for the things that might give you trouble. But running a business is very demanding, so just be sure that you will not be overwhelming yourself. 💗

If candles will sell well there then I say go for it! It's just a matter of knowing who your audience is.

Hi I have started doing candle business and the last few weeks was a bit hectic because I was testing the candles but none of them have scent smell or it wasn’t diffusing the room…but I’m now understanding that I have to add more EO and let them cure for 3 days right? So once I’m making candles should I let them set for overnight or 24 hours then close the lid for 3 days to cure then send them to customers? Am I saying right or maybe u can guide me what to do? And my customers do want my candles so for how long it should be?

It depends on where you live. If you live in a state with sales tax then you need to get a sales tax certificate so you can remit taxes to the state. You can register your business as an LLC but many people just do a sole proprietorship, which doesn't require paperwork. Do you know what kind of wax bath and body works use?
I don't, but you might be able to find a video on it, or a google search might turn something up.
I'm interested in liability/safety issues, such as : are you required to put a warning label on the candles, etc. A friend loves the coffee-scented candle I made, and wants me to sell some to her to give as gifts. I'm terrified that someone will burn them improperly, then burn their house downs, or their child will burn themselves.

I’m a candle maker and I’m in a candle group the market is getting saturated now. There’s 2k people expected to launch their candle business this season. It’s getting a little challenging now.
It's true there are a lot of candle makers right now but the upside is that it is a consumable product and customers are always going to need more!

To me it's so frustrating because I do want my own website but to start with etsy is cheaper. But I've also had a business before on etsy and it wasn't any good 😔😔 agh so frustrating 😫 I sell wax melts because it's what I use on my home and starting Monday my office as well.
Think of having your own website as an investment in your business. You will want that as you build and grow. But starting out on Etsy is fine while you move toward the website plan.
