      I miss my Mapex Saturn V studio ease. I still have the Chris Adler snare and dw9002 double bass pedal. But when I moved into my apartment I had to get an electronic kit 😩. But I've got my eyes on the Varus sets for my next acoustic. But I'll always lov3 Mapex.

    Very cool comparison video! Looking into getting a kit myself, mainly for metal, so this is a very useful video indeed. I lean towards the Tama, but I'm really not into any of their finishes in the Walnut/Birch line at the moment, that's my main issue with them. I like that they come with a tom mount in a standard configuration, few of the higher-end kits do, except for Yamaha. I might go with a Starclassic Maple to get the finish I really want (Flat Deep Green). Yamaha Live Custom Hybrid could also be a contender though, too bad they cost so much more...

      @@ThomannsDrumBash Hi Simon, thank you very much. I always find it exciting how other drummers tune their toms. Both in terms of the interval between the batter head and the resonant head, as well as the interval between the different toms.
      I see that with your tuning the interval between top and bottom head is rather high. At least significantly higher than what I would aim for. But the sound proves you right, your toms sound really cool.
      I just got a delivery with new tom skins from Thomann yesterday and can now experiment again with the tuning.
      Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    • @ThomannsDrumBash
      @ThomannsDrumBash  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Raphael. Likewise. I‘m also into experimenting with these kinda things. Usually I tune the reso head a minor third higher than the batter head. I tried a couple of different intervals but i always come back to that :). I am actually not a big fan of tuning the batter head higher. There is a video about different Reso head tunings here on the channel if you‘re interested. For me, it was very interesting to do it :). What kinda heads did you get? My favorite combination right now is: Batter head: Vintage Ambassador Coated, Reso Head: Coated Diplomat. Wir können übrigens auch auf deutsch schreiben 😅 //Simon

      @@ThomannsDrumBash Da das Video auf Englisch ist, hab ich auch auf Englisch kommentiert. Aber ich habe mir schon gedacht, dass du mich auch auf Deutsch verstehen würdest. :D
      Eine (kleine oder große) Terz ist eigentlich auch mein Lieblingsintervall zwischen Schlag- und Resonanzfell. Für Racktoms eher eine große Terz und für Floortoms eine kleine Terz oder sogar weniger. Und tatsächlich mache ich es genau so, wie du in dem Video zur Stimmung der Resonanzfelle gesagt hast. Bei den Racktoms stimme ich meist das Reso tiefer als das Schlagfell, um diesen etwas ausgewogeneren Sound zu haben. Bei den Floortoms darf es eine ordentliche Portion Low-End sein, deswegen stimme ich dort das Reso höher als das Schlagfell.
      Ich habe mich wieder einmal für die ganz klassische Kombination aus Evans G2 und Evans Genera Resonant entschieden. Damit kann man nicht viel verkehrt machen. Mein eigentliches Experiment wird der Versuch sein, den Grundton des Kessels herauszufinden und die Trommel dann auf diesen Ton zu stimmen. Mal schauen, wie sich da auf den Sound auswirkt.

    • @fuzzylogiceire
      @fuzzylogiceire 5 місяців тому +1

      @@daltonidaho The fact that Pearl don't include a mounting system with their kits, making you buy them separately, leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Other manufacturers whose kits sound just as good if not better can manage it so why can't Pearl? It's even the norm for Pearl to equip kits that cost around 2,000 euro (for example their Professional Series) with the cheaper UT Remo heads. This is also true of the Session Select kit in the video. For comparison, the Mapex Saturn is equipped with Remo USA heads (the superior kind) on every single head, batter and reso. Even Tama manage to put Remo USA's on their batter's, if not the resos. I don't dislike Pearls drums, they make some excellent sounding drums, but I think they suffer from notable value for money issues when put up against their competitors.

      @@ThomannsDrumBash well, actually I consider myself as a pretty universal drummer/musician, so I need universal instrument. I’m a Premier dude since ‘96, have English made GenX and Genista kits. From Premier I would choose Genista for rock/metal. Birch shells, clean sounding instrument, brilliant.
      btw, I had opportunity to play for some time all of like these on video kits, and for metal probably I would choose Pearl shells (but not hardware). They have clean, pretty aggressive and dominant sound. Mapex has the same “aggression”, but their tone is to low for my taste. Tama to me sounds in between of Pearl and Mapex.

    Alex Rudinger, who until recently played Tama SLP Dynamic Kapur drums - quite similar sounding and priced to those Pearl Session Studio Select drums, so maybe good for comparative purposes too..

    All else equal, the Pearl drums sounded the most live and had the longest sustain. The Mapex kit sounded much darker and drier. The Tama kit sounded the brightest and had the most attack out of the three kits. Slightly drier than the Pearl, but more live than the Mapex kit. Probably due to having die-cast hoops all around the kit and thicker shells.
    As far as brands, Mapex makes the best value-for-money kits if you want the best sounding kit at the lowest possible price. Pearl has the widest product range and offers far more customization options than the other two. The only area Pearl lacks in is hardware. While they’ve released tons of new hardware products lately that keep up with the competition now, they’ve historically been behind other top-of-the-line brands. Tama makes arguably the best hardware and the best drums for high-volume applications.
    If I ignored cost, I’d go with Pearl, but Tama would be an extremely close second.
