In America we bastardize language so it super annoys me when anyone give you a hard time about pronunciation. We stole...everything anyway! On that note, your joke “that’s not all they took” is absolutely called for. We were awful to the Native Americans. There r too many racists here & whenever I hear “go back to where you came from” I say “Unless you say that in Navajo, Cherokee etc, STFU!” Long story, it’s ok call out what we’ve done. The end

Hey hey hey, don't discount how exciting ball bearings can be. NASA has had a devil of a time understanding why th bearings in the reaction wheels of their satellites were failing.
No matter how stringent they made they quality control, failure after failure kept occuring. At one point, the Kepler spacecraft was thought to be a lost cause when 2 of it's three reaction wheels stopped working, but they managed to extend the mission using the solar winds as a push force, holding Kepler steady.
Well, it turned out high energy particles were causing small electric arcs within the bearing surface (something that couldn't be rightfully tested for on Terra Firma) these arcs would cause small furrows and weld-like beads on the bearing surface, causing the failures. A switch from metal to ceramic bearings has made this an issue of the past.
Agreed, but Less is more when it comes to UA-cam comments.
@@augustwest5356 I disagree! I've struck up some really great friendships by leaving kind, supportive comments that often come with an explanation of why I know something about the topic at hand. Most content creators appreciate thoughtful, well laid out criticisms, and suggestions for how to do a thing better, or how to show it better, or whatever other remedy might have been offered.
This is genuinely fascinating, thank you for making this nerd very happy 😁
Philippa Scott Manley did a fascinating episode all about this hypothesis about a year ago. You'll probably enjoy it!

Chinese person here, we don't normally eat cereal for breakfast (even though I have done so occasionally having lived in Canada for years), we normally eat congee (rice porridge) or Mantou (white steamed buns) with some kinda pickled veggies. Dumplings for breakfast are normally a bit too much effort to make but its not uncommon in china where you can just go and buy fresh ones from the local Cornershop.

"So if this one's boring, you can blame me." -- Simon Whistler, 2020
I was wondering if you would lean the other way. Bravo.
There was one recently, where everyone was suggesting WebTV and I said, "if its boring its on you" ;)
I know. I quoted that one too. LOL
But I think Simon could make the most boring topic interesting to watch 😄
@EmperorJuliusCaesar I am going to assume that you are new to the channel. If you have visited Simon's other channels, you see how this one is more casual, telling jokes. In a different video (ua-cam.com/video/ZEhMlo71x0k/v-deo.html) Simon talks about a subject he did not know anything about only because many people in the comment section asked him to do it. Because it was our suggestion, he said in that video "If this is boring, it's your fault." I quoted those words in the comment section of that video. On *_this_* video, he said the exact opposite, blaming himself, so I did just like before and quoted the comment. In his reply above, Simon remembered what he had said in the original video and my next comment above is about what I just explained to you here. Do you understand better now?
Simon, you’ve never heard of Nosferatu? It’s such classic horror... though of course it was lambasted for years by Bram Stoker’s estate for basically being an adaptation of Dracula without any rights being granted. They actually sued the studio and won over that... hey, there’s an idea for a Business Blaze video, or part of one!
I swear Simon, your beard is like 20% bushier today for some reason.... I was expecting you to plug a beard grooming line of products... possibly owned by the Chinese.
I'm growing it with the hope of sponsorship.

Fun Fact, Daimler AG was actually the first western company to own stakes in a Chinese company, it holds a 12% stake in Beijing Automotive Group.
Smithfield Foods was purchased by the Chinese?
_My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined._
No kidding!
Yep. Smithfield hams, bacon, and all that stuff... so good that pigs jumped at the chance to end up in their smokers. Fear not, the food is still good, the Chinese are just raking off the profit.
Thomas Darby Why would you care which country the billionaire owner of a country comes from?
Yes, a while ago. Did you also know that most chicken in the US is from China? It's really stupid. The chickens are raised, slaughtered and cleaned in the US, then frozen and sent to China so some child or other slave labour can cut it into parts, then send it back to the US. I avoid Smithfield products now at all cost, can't do much about the chicken. Made in the USA chicken is expensive.

Smithfield's ham is definitely a thing in the US. But really, it's just the brand people know. Not a lot of brand loyalty in the holiday ham market....
Except for Honeybaked Hams. For whatever reason...
It's to the extent that a lot of people call the Christmas Ham they made Honeybaked even if they bought it from some other company.
Hillshire Farm has fanatical followers. I was having a melt down as my mom wanted a whole ham, but the store only carried half hams....what was I to do: Bring home a whole ham or a hillshire farm half ham?
I have purchased exactly ONE Smithfield ham in my entire life, and that was 10+ years ago now. It was HORRIBLE! It literally went from my oven to my trash bin in the alley behind my house! It was still warm sitting in the dumpster on Christmas Day! It was the WORST food product of any kind that I have EVER purchased! Never again, Smithfield! You've already got every dollar from me that you will ever get! Thankfully, there is the delicious Cook's ham in the ham section at my local Safeway!
Cook's Ham, jump in my cart, you big, delicious, hunk of ham! We will make beautiful meals out of you like scalloped potatoes with ham, ham fried rice, ham and cheese omelettes, ham sandwiches, and the final ham dish just has to be a nice pot of split pea soup and a batch of cornbread. Weet Bix, currently owned by Sanitarium (which is in turn owned by the Seventh Day Adventist Church), founded In Australia in 1898 and currently has its headquarters in New Zealand. Their jingle "Aussie kids are Weet Bix kids" is very appropriate, since the vast majority of Aussies did indeed grow up eating it for breakfast, although its not exclusively a breakfast food, since its currently just before 10pm here and I am snacking on a bowl of Weet BiX :D . Yes, I'm Australian and a Weet Bix kid who is old enough to be retired.
Hot sick in a bowl would apply to my spouse, I personally prefer my Weet Bix cold.
It's as Australian as Vegemite or Cadbury Chocolate. These are both Australian products which were until recently owned by Kraft, which is a US company I think. Vegemite has been bought back by an Australian company, Bega Foods, which brought this uniquely Australian product back into Australian ownership again. Not sure who owns Cadbury at the moment, but it is made In Tasmania, the Australian state known as the apple isle, just south of mainland Australia.
Strange this modern world we live in, where so many famous brands are no longer owned by companies in their country of origin. Random example - Rolls Royce.
In NZ, you can’t import Weetabix because Sanitarium will drop the trademark hammer on you because of the similarity to Weet-bix.

I'm American. I've not once ever even _HEARD_ of "Smithfield Foods". The "Honey Baked Ham" company is really well known though.
But it's DEFINITELY NOT a Christmas tradition here, to eat "Smithfield Foods" brand hams.
Some people serve a baked ham for Christmas, but not necessarily any SPECIFIC brand.
You're obviously from above the Mason-Dixon Line, or west of the Mississippi. Smithfield and Pruden's hams (among others)don't come wrapped in plastic or in (heaven forbid) in cans. They are the entire ham, hock and all, wrapped in paper then sewed into a cotton wrapper printed with the company name. You Yankees tend to find them too "tough" and salty. We find sugar-cured hams to be mush and bland. When my family lived up North in several places, though, there were always a few people who were big on gourmet foods who frequently got us to haul back a few hams for them when we went visiting. The hams *are* famous among people who really know how pork should taste.
As an American....my face when Simon started talking about the drug stores 😳
They way China is going right now....ya'll can keep that ham playa ✌🏽
Smithfield foods? VERY famous in USA. Loved their stuff. Great bacon and hams. Native Virginian myself so always a big fan. Big news when here when the Chinese bought them.
Weet-bix in Australia was the 1920's, it's actually considered Australia's favourite breakfast cereal, it's delicious, put it in the microwave for 30 seconds and put some sugar on top 👍
That was interesting! I'd always wondered why they sold "Weetabix" in the UK when I always knew it as "Weet-bix". It looks identical, just assumed Australia had copied it and removed a letter to show it was different. Funny it was the other way around.
If you want your childhood ruined a little... in NZ we had the jingle "Kiwi kids, are Weet-Bix kids"
Completely for no good reason, I’ll point out that Smithfield hams featured in a mystery starring that classic American detective and gourmand Nero Wolfe.
Hey Simon and Danny- I got the reference to boat - thrown furniture 😊. Had forgotten about the Chinese buying Smithfield- which is something Smithfield would like all Virginians to forget! Very good hams, BTW, and Smithfield is a beautiful little town!

@@brainblaze6526 Very good observation, and I completely agree! Lol
Smithfield hams are a major holiday tradition in the South. Northerners prefer sugar-cured hams, and Smithfield uses a dry, salt-cure process. Or, at least it was. Since the Chinese buyout of Smithfield, the quality has gone down tremendously. Those of us who are fans of traditional country ham were hugely bummed to find that the new Chinese owners decided to go after a larger market, so they decided to inject water into the cured ham. Now their ham might as well be the stupidly bland Honey Baked Hams.
If you want to try real country ham, I'd recommend Pruden's.
