And one year later...San Marino won 3 olympic medals, the first ones of their history, and by doing so San Marino went on to become the least populated country ever to get an olympic podium and it is the smallest one to get multiple medals at a single Olympics. They sent a 5 person team to Tokyo and 3 of them medalled! What a performance.

I absolutely loved San Marino! You can go to their tourism building and pay €5 for a fancy passport stamp, definitely the coolest one I’ve collected so far. The local moscato is so good that I split a bottle with friend and accidentally ran into a street sign and gave myself a concussion. It was quite the trip.

San Marino is well known to philatelists. One of their chief exports being postage stamps. When I was young before losing my entire collection in a fire, I had a specialty album chock a block with "Art on Stamps", the majority of which were from San Marino. Micro states are big on postage stamps for collectors.

I had never heard of San Marino, until in 2000 when I happened to meet the San Marino Consul General to Brasil in (let's call it) a 'social setting' not far from São Paulo. Interestingly, he was apparently Italian and not even a citizen of San Marino. I can tell you though, he really seemed to enjoy his job. Pretty amazing that such a small country is able to maintain embassies and consulates around the world.

San Marino acting as a safe haven for refugees while acting like they were on board with the big scary countries is the acting performance of the century, its the combination of relative obscurity and general friendliness and flexibility that let them keep their independence, and its cool that they used those traits to help others in need, even though they have little to give and the risks if found out massive. I think I fell in love with the underdog scrappy mountain nation and excited to see them at eurovusion this year because who would have thought they would actually have a shot at winning?!? Underdogs through and through but thats what I love about them

how about a vid on Gibraltar? not necessarily a micro-state, but a micro-place indeed: a cross between southern Spain and England which you can traverse on foot within an hour, and a spot where you could casually walk through one of few British land borders. not to mention the rather interesting history and a landing strip that is also a road.

    • @rafaelwilks

I noticed that, too. Plus, beginning at 9:51 Cardinal Alberoni never became a pope (Prospero Lambertini was the one who became Benedict XIV on February 6, 1740). Instead, what Alberoni did was invade San Marino on his own, causing the Pope at the time, Clement XII, to restore the independence of the country. By the way, I heard somewhere that it was Garibaldi who preserved San Marino's independence as a gift for sheltering him.
