    Funny enough I did some research into them as part of my BSc dissertation back in 2012. I was looking at how technology might help the Derwent valley mills, part of the research was Into qr codes.
    One of the musuems in the region (Mason Mill) had recently removed all their signage because they wanted it to look like a real active working mill. Instead they had all their information on their website. So all over the museum you'd see little cards With an M on them to indicate that that there was more information about the item it was located on. I suggested to the guy who runs it that they use QR codes and put in my thesis. Last year I went there for the first time since, and there were QR codes where the Ms were. Kinda made me smile.

      Surely if the place is plastered with QR codes then it now looks less like a historically accurate working mill (assuming this is a historical mill, or a recreation of one, and not a modern one).
      I also think that if everyone is going to be getting the information on their phones then using the same technology as contactless cards and the likes of apple pay would be possible instead of QR codes. I think customers could just hold their phone near the thing they wish to find out about (or near a specifically designed fence/barrier design feature) and an emebedded chip (like in a contactless card) could either directly impart the information, or could communicate the URL in the same way a QR code does. But then the chip would cost more than printing a few black squares on white paper, so it depends on budget (and the technology itself being available for this, which it may not have been in 2012), but it means that the chips can be hidden underneath the surface of seemingly authentic objects in the mill, rather than putting visibly incongruous QR codes on. Then again the visitor's phone itself is still incongruous too I guess, but by that token so is the person themselves, so I guess the phone doesn't matter.

      @epowell4211 4 роки тому

      That is pretty awesome! It would be cool if more museums had QR codes that linked to additional information on stuff. For instance, if in your mill, the code led to a video of the machinery in use or talked about innovations. It would also be cool to replace "guided audio tours" with QR codes so you could use your own device instead of a rental (ewww) headset.

      @@sarasmr4278 Well for most QR codes you generally merely need to open your camera app and point the camera at it with a modern smartphone, the camera app looks for them at the same time it does normal subject detection for autofocus etc. Whatsapp is a bit different as it is used due to a quirk of the security model whatsapp uses in which the central server does not have your messages and never sees them in plain text as all encryption and decryption is done by the phone app for each user so the phone has to act as the server for the PC and the scanning of the QR code with the app is used to authorise your PC to connect. The alternative would require typing in a rather long 256 character encryption key by hand which would be an impractical nightmare.

    Last year, my concert band decided to post program notes with details about the music and composer online with a QR code rather than either wasting paper printing a huge program or wasting everyone's time with the conductor explaining the piece (with only 1/3 of the audience caring about why the composer wrote the song). Here in America QR codes have only really taken off over the past 5 years, and our audience tends to be older, so we had to write an explanation of how to use the code with their phone. It was quite a success, our audience appreciated learning about the music more, and the older folks liked that someone finally explained what these weird symbols they've been seeing popping up everywhere were about and how to scan them.
    Fun side note: I only recently realized that a QR code scanner app on my phone from 10 years ago was still there, transferred from phone to phone to phone. Rather than deleting it, I kept it on for laughs.

    I work for a bank in Australia. We have a function available on ATM’s for business customers to scan a QR code and the machine allows them to deposit to a specified account. It’s really handy for small businesses who need to send a random worker to deposit their day’s takings outside of business hours; usually they either print the QR code and hand it to the staff member, or they can even scan a picture of the QR code if they have it saved on their smart phone. We used to have an on the spot QR generator to allow person to person transfers, but it wasn’t at all popular and PayID and Osko took its place.

    Dear Danny and Simon, Apple didn't revolutionize QR codes; the first major smartphone manufacturer to introduce that feature was none other than Samsung. They introduced it in their camera app as part of Bixbi with the release of the Galaxy S8 in March 2017, a whole 3 months before iOS 11 was even announced. You had tens of millions of Android users scanning QR codes with their camera app before many iOS users even knew how to scan one. Various other Android phones have had this feature before, and many android Camera apps (not dedicated barcode reading apps) have actually also had it for years prior. The only ideas Apple doesn't steal and then take credit for are the really aweful marketing ones, like removing the universily praised 3.5mm headphone jack to see more crappy bluetooth earbuds.

    I used to for a company that made extremely sophisticated sorting equipment. The machines would create QR codes for products that would include their batch numbers, quantity, etc. It was useless to the average person scanning it but was invaluable to the company that used it for their products. Help prevent fake medicine being distributed, ensured the right product was in the right package and was going to the right place when shipped.
    Just a different use of them from the norm. You'll see these on the bottom or sides of boxes or bottles.

    QR codes were first introduced in 1994 for the Japanese automotive industry. They've been around a lot longer than most realize. Hospitals have started making use of them as well for patient ID bracelets.
    And they're a hell of a lot easier to use than a competing barcode format that thankfully didn't last long (all of a year): the :CueCat! I think I still have my :CueCat device somewhere.

    GM now uses QR codes on a label by the driver's door for RPO codes or regular production options. They also have them on parts like fuel injectors. So we can scan the fuel rate and enter them into the ECM. Which is very helpful to a mechanic. I have also been noticing them on soda bottles with ones that will get you paid money.

    QR codes are primarily used to manage inventory, for the convenience of manufacturers, warehouses, and transportation systems. QR codes are useful because they help solve the data compression problems with bar codes. Essentially they are three dimensional bar codes that likewise encode a series of numbers whose value are assigned to particular characteristics of the product in question. This makes it much easier for complex industrial systems, particularly machine systems, to transfer materials, parts, and finished goods from place to place quickly and accurately. Any utility they may have to the end user has been a derivative consequence. The marketing people are constantly searching for new angles to sell things, and so it wasn't long before poorly conceived, post design uses for QR codes started popping up everywhere advertising money is wasted. Eventually marketing departments figured out how to use QR codes to convey information useful to consumers. However they also unsolved the data compression problem by reintroducing it. Thus leaving the IT sections of industrial engineering firms everywhere to design more detailed QR codes. and work to develop their eventual replacement. And so the cycle of industrial advancement continues.

    Someone may have already explained this, but I'm not going to read 800+ comments to find out. Concerning the River Plate: In Spanish, "Río de la plata", meaning "River of silver". If it was really a plate, it would be, "Río del plato"...and yes, it sounds just as dumb in Spanish as it does in English. In South America, Portuguese is only spoken in Brazil. All other countries in the continent are Spanish-speaking.
    And please don't take this the wrong way...as a fluent Spanish speaker, I had a good laugh when I heard you talking about the River plate. I watch all your channels and love them. Keep up the good work!

    Dear Simon, the only country in South America that speaks Portuguese is Brazil. Not all the rest speak Spanish but it's a safe guess to say they do since most of them do. Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, all of them speak Spanish. As a Brazilian, I have to say, I'm pleased you want more countries to speak my language lol

    QR codes have other formats than just the web link variety. and even that type can be used to store other information. Kodak's subsidiary Creo had a high quality proofing printer and every sheet had a QR code in the corner which the printer would read to determine how many times the sheet had been printed onto, and what portion of the sheet could still be used to print on so you could print on the same sheet multiple times, and actually use up the expensive printer paper.
    Warehouses use a smaller version of QR codes to identify inventory on pallets, and even where in the building the shelf is.
    I don't know if anyone has thought to do it yet, but QR codes could be used to store product information like expiration dates, place of origin, and so forth... I think the standard version can store as many characters as will fit in a Twitter post, but it's expandable too... as long as you have a device that can read the expanded format, I've seen a version of it that is 4 QR codes together though I forget where (shipping labels possibly? FeEx has a proprietary version code that is similar but with vertical bars at the ends, but there's another that has the box shape )

  • @bramscheDave
    @bramscheDave 2 роки тому

    I know I'm late to the party. QR Codes were designed for inventory tracking in Japan in the 90s be Denso. The codes on the things like the raisins are for computer inventory tracking, not for the Internet. Likewise, the QR code on the website, it downloaded a now contact to your phone, without you having to type it in. A lot of business cards also had them for that purpose, they didn't take you to a website, they added the card owners details to your address book.
    QR Codes are versatile and don't all link to websites. You can use them for automatically logging a smartphone into the Wi-Fi network, for example, for tracking products through production and the warehouse. They are used by logistics companies and, in Germany, they are used on letters etc. to help the post office (Die Post) to sort and accurately distribute the mail to the correct location.
    A vast majority of QR codes have nothing to do with the Internet or websites, just that marketing people found out that you can use them to encode a URL as well as many other things.

    Fun Fact: There's a Pokémon game (I believe one of the Mystery Dungeon spinoffs) that uses scanning QR codes (and for a different Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game, round objects) to open up bonus mystery dungeons to explore. These ones have rarer Pokémon and more valuable items, but a higher difficulty level.
    I have never scanned a QR code outside of that game. But I love how innovative it is that I can scan QR codes which are literally everywhere for what amounts to free DLC

    They are far more common in the US since I came back from Britain. In Washington DC, the "Parking Panda" app allows me to pre pay my parking and they send me a QR code. At the parking garage, there is usually a QR code reader that allows you to get in an out. Where there isn't a reader, you can simply draw a ticket and "pay" for the ticket at a kiosk. The movie ticket app, Fandango, allows you to have a digital ticket you can show the ticketing agent or to retrieve an actual physical ticket from a kiosk using the QR code. I buy 100% of my movie tickets this way.
