Hey! I wanted to thank you for clarifying everything! I am so happy that MacOS has the voiceover function. I added your video to my private playlist when I buy a macOS and then I will watch it to learn a little more. For how many years I've been thinking about buying a macOS, and my family said that Apple's macOS didn't have the voiceover function, but I didn't think their answers were true. I mean, all macOS devices should have the voiceover function because it's Apple... so I ignored their false answers. 🤣 I have been an iOS voiceover user for 13 years due to my eye problems, I had surgery like over 6 times. Anyway, I started using this function when I was a high school student, my Braille teacher taught me about the voiceover function of iOS. Again, thank you so much for making this video. This information was very useful. :)
All of the Mac products have VoiceOver built in. I've been a MacOS VoiceOver user since 2004ish. It was out LOONG before iOS VoiceOver. I'm glad you didn't' listen to your family. I love it as a screen reader.

Thank you so much for this series! I am a jaws user that Hass to switch over to voiceover because the only computer I have now is the Mac and I am going to need to use that for personal and business. I’ve been so frustrated stressed and lost because it’s a huge difference from jaws. I am completely blind therefore, I am a Omni keyboard user.
Thank you for this detailed explanation! I've been using VoiceOver at work for accessibility testing, and your video helped me get started. An expected benefit: I use the Mac Rectangle app for snapping windows, and have always done it via Menu selection with mouse. Since Rectangle app uses similar keyboard shortcuts as VoiceOver, I've learned those too :)
I use "voice under cursor" more than any other feature since I still have some vision. My request to apple kills to enhance this feature by being able to toggle between the current way this feature operates - always on which can get irritating, even with the stop voice using the control key - shut nd making it work like the similar voice under cursor function in Windows (part of the magnifier subsystem.). With Windows the voice does not activate until the operator holds down simultaneously the CTRL + ALT keys, then click the left mouse button. The Windows operation is more pleasing to the operator, BUT the Mac reads almost everything! Windows reads much less and is more "glitchy" than the Mac voice under pointer.. Sorry to ramble, I started this comment just to than you for making this video, and I then became an unwelcome guest. Please forgive my lack manners. Again, thank you for this most welcome tutorial.
I also use speak under pointer on my Mac. I have assigned a shortcut key combination (Ctrl+j) to enable / disable this feature as it can been intrusive when you don't want it.

This is a fantastic VoiceOver tutorial and honestly, it's one of the best. You really have a gift for teaching; your instruction style for these is very similar to mine, so I'm super happy to find a fellow teacher who puts in so much effort with these. I've taught assistive technology in the past, including VoiceOver for both Mac and iPhone. I still teach Apple products but not VoiceOver or Zoom as much. Way before when I was subscribed to a lot more blind UA-camrs, I watched screen reader demos, and one of the things I tried to communicate to them was they had the speech at warp speed. I could understand it, but most people couldn't; some creaters' demos were aimed toward the sighted population but I really think part of a full screen reader experience is having it speak at a rate that most can understand. Another common thing I saw was things were not being broken down into small and understandable steps, nor were they clearly explained. I saw this a lot too when I was working in AT--some fantastic teachers and presenters and a lot that were just... meh. I use Alex too, and like you, I speed him up; otherwise he sounds like he's sleep deprived. ::LOL:: What braille display do you use, or do you have several? I have a Braille Edge. I'm grateful that I at least have a braille display, but when I got it, I really wanted a Baum Vario. Right around that time though, Baum went out of business. I'm pining for an Active now. And if I had a bunch of extra money somehow, I wouldn't mind an Orbit. Ideally I'd love a display for work and one for leisure reading.
Omg haha! Alex does sound sleep deprived slow. I never thought of it like that. Do you find some slow screen readers give you a strange uncomfortable sense like you are almost dizzy or moving backwards when they are super slow? It’s a weird thing I’ve noticed sometimes.
@@UnsightlyOpinions YES! I can't stand it when a screen reader is talking at super slow speeds, though if I'm teaching or demoing, it's tollerable for short peirods. Even at the "average" speed though, my brain starts losing focus. I've always been the kind of person who processes a lot of information very quickly. When I was in college, I'd record lectures and then speed them up later to listen to them; the profs sounded like chipmunks but at least I wasn't going crazy. I'm the same with books.
Great start to the tutorials series. I forget that you use the full-size keyboard. I’m so used to using the smaller size keyboard that I get a little intimidated by the additional keys.

Thank you Carrie! I mean you can lock the vo keys and then you don't need to press anything, but I like to show basic nav the way I learned way back when, then explain why you might or why you don't want to do that later. :)

Also, do you use Microsoft Word and other Microsoft apps for Mac? I'm trying to learn Microsoft programs with VoiceOver and find them a little difficult to use.

My mom and dad got me a MacBook Pro from my high school graduation present. I received it yesterday. Therefore, your voiceover tutorial has been very helpful. I wanted to say something, though. Did you know instead of having to push control and option together, you can just use CapzLock as your VO key? I’m sure you did. I just thought that was easier.
I definitely did :-) but I am so old school that when I started using voice over, that was not an option. So all dogs can’t learn new tricks 😝 Thanks, I’m so glad you found it helpful!

I think the biggest thing to remember with VoiceOver on iPad or iPhone is right and left swipe that will move to the previous or next item and double tap to select. I'll definitely do an iPad/iPhone VoiceOver tutorial soon. :)
I am using macbook version M1 which has touch bar at the top along with the only two keys on left and right corner then how can I use through touch bar?
You will need to use the keys one in on the far bottom left of your keyboard for control and option. The keys just to the left of your arrow keys are the command and option keys. The M1 should have more than just 2 keys on the bottom left but does have onlu 2 on the bottom right. To use the Touch Bar you can either run your finger along the bar while voiceover is on to hear the options and double tap when you hit the option you want or press and hold the function key and run your finger along the Touch Bar to hear the function keys and double tap when you hit the right option. Hope that helps!
I am a sighted web developer and want an advanced web browser demo by a highly experienced voiceover user demonstrating how they use and navigate the web. Don't dumb anything down (e.g. slowing the speech)
I do a lot of that kind of testing and review all the time. Are you wanting that for commercial use for your business? Voiceover users use the web at all kinds of different speeds, while I like mine quick, many prefer to hear it slower so in an effort to be universally accessible that was why I typically slow things down in videos.

@@NicholasShanks I'm not speaking for Tamera at all. But as a fellow blind user and someone who also hase accessibility consulting and testing as well as teaching, I will say that in my opinion, it helps if the sighted developer understands what the screen reader is saying so that you can hear and better understand the information that the screen reader is giving to the user. Unless you yourself are very accustomed to hearing synthetic speech at a very fast rate--which is relative by the way--it can sound like jibberish. So I do think it is necessary if you're wanting a demo to listen to the speech at a slowed down rate. I'll also say here that Tamera's demo is excellent because she attempts to include both her blind and sighted audience, giving most users a full experience. You can search for other screen reader tutorials on UA-cam and yes, they'll be sped up, but I guarantee you, they are nowhere near as high quality as Tamera's. I've watched many of them. Good luck.

I hate the Touch Bar. It sucks for screen reader users. Depending on the age of your MacBook, there may be a physical escape key or none. If there isn't it will always be in the top left of the Touch Bar and accessible with a double tap. if you need the F keys, hit the function button and hold it down as you run your finger across the Touch Bar the F keys will appear and you can choose the one you prefer with a double tap. :) Also it can be helpful to set up shortcuts to other keys. I also hate my Touch Bar. Hope that helps!
Can someone please help me? I am locked out of my MacBook (I broke my screen so it’s blacked out) and I’m trying to use voice over to log in. But I don’t know how to get to the password hint :( thank you in advance!!!!
Using standard voice over navigation VO left and right arrows just move past the item that says password edit test. It should read out your hint after a couple of password attempts

Thanks Juan! I find a lot of commands are so much less contortionist with it and my goodness it makes film editing easier.

I think the biggest thing to remember with VoiceOver on iPad or iPhone is right and left swipe that will move to the previous or next item and double tap to select. I'll definitely do an iPad/iPhone VoiceOver tutorial soon. :)

I am using macbook version M1 which has touch bar at the top along with the only two keys on left and right corner then how can I use through touch bar?
You will need to use the keys one in on the far bottom left of your keyboard for control and option. The keys just to the left of your arrow keys are the command and option keys. The M1 should have more than just 2 keys on the bottom left but does have onlu 2 on the bottom right. To use the Touch Bar you can either run your finger along the bar while voiceover is on to hear the options and double tap when you hit the option you want or press and hold the function key and run your finger along the Touch Bar to hear the function keys and double tap when you hit the right option. I am a sighted web developer and want an advanced web browser demo by a highly experienced voiceover user demonstrating how they use and navigate the web. Don't dumb anything down (e.g. slowing the speech)
I do a lot of that kind of testing and review all the time. Are you wanting that for commercial use for your business?
Voiceover users use the web at all kinds of different speeds, while I like mine quick, many prefer to hear it slower so in an effort to be universally accessible that was why I typically slow things down in videos.

@@NicholasShanks I'm not speaking for Tamera at all. But as a fellow blind user and someone who also hase accessibility consulting and testing as well as teaching, I will say that in my opinion, it helps if the sighted developer understands what the screen reader is saying so that you can hear and better understand the information that the screen reader is giving to the user. Unless you yourself are very accustomed to hearing synthetic speech at a very fast rate--which is relative by the way--it can sound like jibberish. So I do think it is necessary if you're wanting a demo to listen to the speech at a slowed down rate. I'll also say here that Tamera's demo is excellent because she attempts to include both her blind and sighted audience, giving most users a full experience. You can search for other screen reader tutorials on UA-cam and yes, they'll be sped up, but I guarantee you, they are nowhere near as high quality as Tamera's. I've watched many of them.

VO keys + M will take you to the menu bar which puts you on right on the Apple menu. Then VO+ space to open the menu. :)

My MacBook has a top slider bar and no F keys. Help!
I hate the Touch Bar. It sucks for screen reader users. Depending on the age of your MacBook, there may be a physical escape key or none. If there isn't it will always be in the top left of the Touch Bar and accessible with a double tap. if you need the F keys, hit the function button and hold it down as you run your finger across the Touch Bar the F keys will appear and you can choose the one you prefer with a double tap. :) Also it can be helpful to set up shortcuts to other keys. I also hate my Touch Bar. Hope that helps!
Can someone please help me? I am locked out of my MacBook (I broke my screen so it’s blacked out) and I’m trying to use voice over to log in. But I don’t know how to get to the password hint :( thank you in advance!!!!
Using standard voice over navigation VO left and right arrows just move past the item that says password edit test. It should read out your hint after a couple of password attempts
