Holy crap. I have had my puppy for 5 months and walks are torture because of the pulling. I was about to get a prong collar it’s in my Amazon cart. I just spent the last 14 minutes with her doing this technique and I was so amazed that it actually works, and I could do it!! She’s certainly not perfect and we aren’t easy for a regular walk yet but if I have to stay on my deck and driveway for the next few weeks until she’s got it so be it!! Thank you!
I also have been using your technique for the barking from the windows when any little thing goes by. We tel her thank you and tell her it’s ok and redirect her to something else.. we’ve been doing it for a few weeks now and we are at the point that if she sees something she has this little half bark she does and we immediately tell her thank you, and she’s a good girl and she stops. It’s unbelievable!
I agree - I was struggling with 100lb Rhodesian Ridgback covid puppy with near zero socialization. The Gentle leader was as life saver. He still shows aggression sometimes and catches me off guard because of being intact. I hope he gets better
You make it clear that the human must commit fully to the training and not give up or just do it sometimes. Thank you for this necessary and consistent reminder.
Literally a miracle worker here. We implemented this for the first time ever tonight and it worked so well. We made it around the block with NO reactivity to dogs, joggers, or bikers. Might have taken us and hour but the no reactivity is such a success It could have taken 2 hours and I wouldn’t care!!
I'm currently in school to become a professional dog trainer and I've got to admit this is the first time seeing this method. I've been using the training method from my school with horrible results, especially when another dog approaches us on a walk....I end up looking like a fool while my dog is acting ridiculous. One of your video's populated as a suggestion so I watched a few. I got up this morning with great anticipation to apply this method. WOW...again I say WOW. On our walk we did encounter another dog and WOW....finally a pleasant walk! I recommended you the the gentleman we encountered because he has the same issue with his Pitbull.
My dog is a high energy dufus. Hes 2 and pulls me so hard he breaks leashes. He had this down in 15 min. UNREAL. I cant believe a relaxing walk is in my horizon.
Stumbled on this video by accident. This makes SO much sense. I always struggled with why the “positive” trainers I’ve viewed in the past you could make NO “corrections”. I’m not even that way with my child. I’m heading out to the driveway now to give this a shot.
I just started to do some research about force-free training and I've never heard that there is no correction ;-) The core seems to be that you manage situations as long as you train the dog so no correction is needed as there are (almost) no situations to correct. Now I understand that's not possible every single day and hour, but I try my best and so far it works fine here.
@@weltfrieden_in_pink Depends on the dog, breed, etc. "Force free" is all about spamming the dog with treats but what's that going accomplish when an off leash dog charges your GSD or Malinois, or a deer jumps out in front of your Husky? Nothing.

This made a huge difference with my epically reactive 2 year old Cattle Dog is got from a shelter a few months ago. I had to figure out that he was walking with a loose leash, but completely ignoring me though. Now I check on him frequently to reinforce that he needs to pay attention to me. So helpful! Especially the last 3 min or so when you showed what not to do and the right way. I have been doing leash correcting wrong and didn't even realize it until the end of the video! Thank you!
I've been using a gentle leader for several months and my Goldendoodle would still pull. I would stop and slowly pull back on the gentle leader, which was not effective. After a 2 week board & train program, a year of prong & e-collar with a reactive Carolina dog/Malamute/Wolf mix, your method with only a flat collar worked in 5 minutes!! Starting “before you start” actually clicked for myself & my dog. At the end of the 30 min session I was able to drop the leash. Thanks soooo much! My dog thanks you too. This is gold... My 5 months old Beagle walks so very nicely on a leash after those doorway drills, and the sudden stops & asking a sit and stay. Most people's Beagles are crazy pullers, dragging the owners everywhere, and many get lost because they run off if ever an owner drops the leash (or lets them off in public). Mine has quickly learned to sit down when I stop, and look up to me. He knows that the walk won't continue unless he does that. Today, he saw an elderly gentleman whom, for whatever reason, my puppy found scary, so he growled and raised his hackles whilst we approached. One sudden stop & leash pop as he hit the end of the leash, and he snapped right out of it, walking nicely on a lose leash, and wagging his tail at the person, but kept on walking. Thanks Joel!!!
thank you. I agree with your training method and principal. It's rare to see someone with so much sense and balance. hahaha omg I love this channel so much!! "they cant handle it out there"! It's great information and comedy in one. I tried these methods today and it was AMAZING the transformation! My dog could heel w treats with no distractions but whenever there was another person he would pull me to go say hi and I was a walking petting zoo. Now that I did the corrections (only mild ones were needed as he knows leash pressure and he is 6 months so I am gentle) and the stops I could walk like a normal person past other people!!! Honestly I feel like im 90 percent there after one day of trying this.
I used these techniques today with my 2.5 yr golden we rescued 2 months ago today! I cannot believe how well this worked! we walked on the street for 30 minutes with NO PULLING at all. I was amazed. I'm planning on taking her to a park and work in more distraction heavy area. This channel has foxed me and made my dogs life better. TANK YOU!!!
This dog was a very slow learner. I am glad you showcased him to show people no matter how difficult it is, the time to train them on the leash this way is highly worth it. My dog was much more responsive to these corrections. At least indoors and on the property. Had to work harder on the road
I have to say: We invested too much into the "Whisper your machismo as two dogs shred each other for ratings" guy. Then he stays perfectly statuesque during the bloodbath & people swoon. Good thing my dogs were stellar individuals & hard to ruin with those methods. Oh that's been bottled😁👍 Thanks again
Your videos have made all the difference in the world for my 2 labs. I have never seen anyone explain leash walking like this. In just a few days, my dogs are both totally different on the leash. Keep up with the great videos
I have an Australian Shepard that would rather strangle on a leash and die before he pays attention to me. I feel the same way as the person who wrote that. I have been working with him since he was 8 weeks old he is now 7 months and our walk are to hell for me. I am exhausted and I am so thrilled I found you today. I have watched and listen to trainers who doesn’t seem to work. Thank you!
Hey just stumbled onto your channel today. I love the way you teach us and train dogs. What always confused me was the way that many positive reinforcement trainers on UA-cam will always go to treats as the answer for everything. They couldn’t show and never showed “punishment” as it is seen as cruel. Thank you for explaining in a clear and concise way with no nonsense involved. Will try this with my 10 week old Belgian Shepard. I don’t want my dog to completely rely on treats so thanks for pointing this out.
I have been having so much difficulty with leash agression and this method resonated with me because it seemed so 'common sense.' I tried it today (without the prong collar) and it worked. I had not heard of you before Mr. Beckman but I am subscribing today!
This worked for my 8 month old Aussiedoodle. You are 100 percent right, it has to start in the house and they have to earn their way up to the walk. Thank you so much for this video!
Other again, Joel's method is spot on..... Less than a week working on loose leash control, and my powerful American bulldog is now in MY control, and we are able to go for walks again after not enjoying our walking experiences over the past 12 months or so. 💯👍🐕😁
Oh my goodness. I just found your channel and I love your philosophy! I am a firm believer in discipline and correction with animals along with positive reinforcement. So many people are horrified when I firmly correct my Blue Heeler puppy. Will watch all your videos!
I somehow used alot of your strategies without ever being told or taught, but damn you got this down to a science. You gonna change lives with this one video! Great work man.
After 3 months of intense research, browsing, reading and learning about dog training, after 2 months of toiling all day with my new puppy.... This is clearly the best video, the best demonstration I've seen of all.... And this is from a Cesar Millan fan....
my 10 months old would never stop pulling the leash and was very reactive literally the first day i tried this she started to pay more attention to me and where i was going! She even started to sit when she saw other dogs on the street waited for my okey to go meet them! This method works like wonders. Now we still have a lot to accomplish for example her trying to eat every single thing off of the ground, but the leash pulling improved so much that i was in happy tears after our first walk with this method!
Thank you! You have explained your method very well here. I was able to walk my Goldi - super hyper crazy reactive to other dogs - without any bark nor leash pulling next to other crazy barking dogs behind the fance. With your method I was able to do in three days what I was begging for 3 years. We still have problems with other dogs, which are not behind their fences, but now I know it needs some practice for few days. Subscribed and already watched all of your movies. This is unbelievable. Greetings from Poland!
I did this. It made a difference with my rescue that I got as a 4 year old. I am still working on your other video of dogs who always want to be in front.
Thanks for the video. I did a puppy version on my 5 month old maltese with a harness and it worked so well. I did not dare to do off leash yet, but we are rolling with basics. I appreciate that you don't treat a dog as a child with the whole only positive approach
Thank you for this. I have watched so many training videos on leash pulling and it seemed like no matter how much work I put in, the pulling got better but never stopped. Every walk was a training walk, but progress seemed to plateau. But with your video, something clicked and I saw improvement within the first minute of our walk
5 years on a prong collar...and my dog still pulled. I did what he said on this video and others and my dog walked on a loose leash on the first walk...it WORKS!!!!!
Thanks. Will do this. Been doing other training, but this is great. We did this last night and this morning. It took less time to get this across to Dexter. He is a rescue, but obviously he had this training before. It worked like a charm, in less than five minutes.
Thanks for showing correction using a smaller dog. I have used your advice on corrections and putting in the work before leaving the house and driveway. I find this has helped my dog get 50% better. Which is huge. I’ve tried all the ‘positive’ training methods and hired trainers. This has been the best advice we have used and I have actually seen improvement. I will keep working on this method.
I get what you're saying, but this method he's using is still using positive reinforcement. The dog gets reinforced by getting to walk further and further (and only gets reinforced if he/she doesn't pull on the leash). This goes to show that positive reinforcement works quite well with lasting results.
@@cassidys100 This with the leash pressure is negative reinforcement along with positive and negative punishment. Applied leash pressure (an aversive) when the dog is performing an unwanted behaviour with the intention of extinguishing it. Taking the dog away from something it wants when it pulls (ie. Going the opposite direction) is negative punishment and redirection. Aversive (the leash pressure) removed as a reward and going forwards when the dog doesn't pull/is waiting is negative reinforcement. But good on you for trying to simplify the process in this to a sickening degree for an agenda..
@@ina7084 Exactly. People confuse positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and punishment all of the time. "Negative reinforcement" is a psychological term where negative is NOT a synonym for bad, inferior, harmful, unfair, etc. Just like a number that less less than zero (negative) is not "bad" while a number greater than zero (positive) is not "good."
These methods really work!! After only a handful of sessions my dog doesn’t pull the leash anymore and his reactivity has reduced dramatically. I am now confident to take him incrementally into the community and introduce him to other dogs over time.
I just subscribed! Mind blown "Earning their way to a walk" Yes it makes total sense. I have a lot of work to yikes. this will help with my agility course training as well!
I have a 100+ pound AmStaff, with a 36 inch chest and strong as an ox ! I had worked with her,she was doing great, then I became bedridden for almost 2 years. I'm well now,but my dog has picked up bad habits, and has been very bored, with me always being in bed or a chair, and since my dobie passed away last year. It's like I'm starting from scratch with her.... I'm physically weak from those sedentary years, and she's crazy strong,,drags me all over the place. I started your techniques today and already there's improvement~!! Thanks for all you do~!!
This was so awesome. Thank you! I am going to implement this w both my older dog and younger puppy. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us so freely. It’s obvious that you want us to succeed!
Thank you so much for sharing this. Super helpful content. You are so clear and precise with your instructions. I love the no non sense approach and straight talk. Looking forward to many more videos like this.
Love the info you provided. We just adopted a rescue. She is not confident outside as much as Inside. She pulls on leash. I have tried this and she has improved indoors. We need more work outside.
After my daughter got a loan, (still repaying it), to pay for a dog trainer, our Shephard came back worse, had severe kennel cough, and reeked of urine and poop all over her and her leash. I'm so grateful to find your channel.
This is my first time watching your videos and I'm excited to try out. My dalmatian is extremely food motivated, so it's super easy to train her with new things, but i know her obedience revolves around the food. She will walk next to me and never leave if I have treats, but she thinks the motion I want from her is for her to be looking at me constantly, and she angles her body in front of me so I can never take a left turn! She's focused on the reward, not on me. I'm going to give this a go!
a trainer got me to use a prong collar on my large year and a half old pup, as he pulled and went nuts for other dogs. Your video s on what to do are great,,..i put away the prong collar, stopped doing 180 degree sharp turns, and my dog responded nicely, using your body language and corrections. He is happy, as am I! Nice walks now on a buckle collar . Still not perfect, but we have time. Thank you. Keep up the tough love. HH
I’m so glad you read the letter from the person with a heeler. I have a dog just like that. I feel like she’d choke herself to death rather then behave. I’m going to try this technique!
I don't know if you'll ever read this but I want to thank you so much! The change was almost instant. I just had the best walk I've ever had with my dog. I've tried so many different things and this worked the best by far.
You definitely deserve more subscribers. Most useful and straight to the point information that I've found from youtube trainers. The positive reinforcement only group make things so overly complicated.
If it makes it easier for people to understand.... When you do the work inside the house and get them keyed into you before you even open the door. When you do finally open the door and go outside is the best and biggest positive reinforcement your dog can get. They feel that they have earned their walk and it reinforces the heck out of em! It overwrites all the tiny leash corrections and they then feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and become so proud of themselves it's awesome.
My dog required a plethora of tries and corrections to be able to walk loose leash. Most of the time, he didn't even take treats, because he was hyper and frustrated. Plus, I needed a gentle leader. It was worth it though. Your method tamed my juvenile criminal and made him a good boy. Thank you.
Thank you. Excellent video. Great audio. Every time I watch a video, I get one more clue and get the technique more drilled in. I can see that really isn’t much pull on the leash, but less leeway. I definitely feel like I am training myself more than the dog.
I always get something new from your videos. Even though our walks are pretty good it helped to watch this! I need to get serious.😁 Thanks so much. Your videos are the best!
I have a 9 month Doberman. He has improved on leash with your input. I'm still popping his leash over a thousand times on a walk. He's stubborn as hell and strong. He respects me, but he tests me constantly. The little dogs quick pops are easy, but popping the leash on my doberman means two feet planted and both hands providing the jolt that gets his attention. I'll keep watching, myself and the dog are getting better every walk.
This is incredibly helpful. Heading out to make this our training goal. I’m committed to doing this every morning. With a pit/lab mix leadership is key in ensuring I have a well mannered/behaved pet.
I didn't realise how important it is to do a lot of work inside the house before you venture outside. And for showing what to do with your body while you're stopping. I've acquired an 8 year old spaniel who doesn't cope with loose leash walking and constantly pulls on a loose leash. After a week of not making it further than the driveway, we actually made it 3 houses down today! She's not ready to walk with the other spaniel yet, but I have high hopes it will happen soon. Many thanks.
We use to walk our doxie without a leash all the time. We did a similar training to this. We wouldn’t let her leave us without correcting her. It took us a while for her to get it right since it was just us training her. Wish we had this video back then. We are going to try this technique with our new puppy! Thank you!
People complaining about Joel's methods are SOFT 😆 Thank you for your service Joel! 💪 And for not changing for the sake of these babies who doesn't want to accept reality/nature.
I am so happy to find this video. I knew that I need help. Have adopted a 2&1/2 yr. Old female GS. 70 lbs. Wants to be at end of 6 ft. Leash and setting the pace of the walk most of the time. She slows as the walk lengthens-- only because of the heat, I think. I have had her 1 month. I think she's settling in nicely. She is very smart and sometimes gives me respect by walking slower and putting slack in leash at which time I say "YES!Good girl". I wiggle or waggle the leash also, thinking I am showing her the loose leash is what I like. But pretty soon a squirrel or rabbit gets her attention and she's back at the tugging or pulling. She has made progress with her dog aggression. She has been sitting quietly the past week-- as another dog passes. At first she barked fiercely and lunged. Now she watches and remains in sit. So, I am back to square one with leash training after watching your video. I think no one ever walked her much before me --- but she is very smart, affectionate and still growing(!). So I need to get on it immediately. She does not work for treats.
What an amazing trainer. I’ve binge watched most of your videos and put your ideas into practice. In just 3 days my dogs are so different and seem so relaxed. My older dog is fine off lead with most dogs but occasionally has a pop at a dog. She went to do it yesterday and I just made a noise and clapped my hands and she turned to look at me and stopped!
I had my pointer following me everywhere the first few months, but after month 6 His pointer instinct kicked in and he started to chase everything that flies. Had to put him back on the leash or just hope for his return eventually….. man do pointers run fast
I'm so very impressed!! After just one session my dog was getting it and the next day we did round two and he's doing just amazing!! That first walk sure did take all day though hahah thank you Beckman's Dog Training!!
"you just bought yourself a ticket the other way" The best thing about you is the repetition, you don't expect people to get it quickly, and you're right. Every time I watch a loose leash video I pick up another tiny detail. Awesome bro, keep em coming 👍👍🐶♥️
This approach has helped my surging Labradoodle when many other approaches failed. I like the idea of forgoing being able to go for a walk if the dog is not ready to do loose leash walking. We are getting much better but I find myself saying to Jagger about once a walk :" I am going to do this all day".
i love how he actually uses untrained dogs rather than trying to show us with a perfectly behaved dog
I mean how do you wanna learn when he does never correct that dog? 😅 Or worse: he corrects although the dogs does it right

Good thing my dogs were stellar individuals & hard to ruin with those methods. Oh that's been bottled😁👍 Thanks again
Another great trainer to trust is Victoria stilwell she is amazing with most of the same methods just more in detail and more topics covered.
Thank you!
Wow! less than 15 minutes and you have almost cracked it! Thank you. I learned so much!
Will watch all your videos!
haha..1000% correct. We have shocked a few of our friends by disciplining thier poorly behaving pups in front of them..

Thank you
this man is a national treasure!
Thank you for explaining what not to do and why! This helped me understand what I am doing right and wrong to improve my dog walks!
GREAT explanation in "Does your dog pull?" I'm watching over & over so I LEARN! Thanks!
my 10 months old would never stop pulling the leash and was very reactive literally the first day i tried this she started to pay more attention to me and where i was going!
But with your video, something clicked and I saw improvement within the first minute of our walk
man we just got a new rescue and these videos are an amazing help!
This was actual magic...I also found my cavapoo puppy much calmer on the walk it took a while but this was my 1st day trying it. Thank you so much.
Trying this tomorrow with both my dogs In the house and garden!! Thank you so much!
you are right on target, sir. love what you are doing. it works, when you put the time in.
"Good is the enemy of the best!" Thank you, thank you, thank you. I understand my mistake now and know how i can proceed. ❤
I swear this is the best video on leash walking. Tried this for 5 minutes with my beagle. Already improved.
@@cassidys100
This with the leash pressure is negative reinforcement along with positive and negative punishment.
This is GOLD! Such improvement in just 15 mins. This pups gonna be a pro in 2 weeks.
I like how you beak things down in to small understandable steps! 👍😊
a trainer got me to use a prong collar on my large year and a half old pup, as he pulled and went nuts for other dogs.
Great info. So glad I found you. I have a new rescue puppy and these trainings are so very useful! 💙
Excellent! We just had a lovely walk together (starting in the house). Thank you so very VERY much!
This is my favourite video ever! Thank you for those tutorials. We would never leave the door calmly with treats only.
You are a true expert and an excellent teacher! Thanks for making such great training material!
Best trainer by far, thanks for all the videos!!
Thank you for your step by step instructions. No one else with training videos is doing this.
What about using an easy leader collar - changed the game for my wife with our rescue dog
The collar is called gentle leader not easy leader.
We are forever grateful for how your videos have helped us 🙌 you have changed the whole game for us and our dogs.
So good to hear.
Dude I love your no nonsense approach. Watching all your videos and working with my 10 month old black lab
Thanks, keep up the good work
This is incredibly helpful. Heading out to make this our training goal. I’m committed to doing this every morning. With a pit/lab mix leadership is key in ensuring I have a well mannered/behaved pet.
Thank you 🙏
Btw, I DEFINITELY Subscribed because ALLLLL of his info is Solid and Great advice, reinforcement.....Thank You!🙋🏽♀️💜
it worked, it worked, it worked. Thank you, now subscribed and I enjoy your intenseness, you remind me of me.
Thank you so much love you video's 😍 now I know how to go about fixing my dogs 🐕 walk. Hi from Western Australia 🇦🇺
You’re awesome! My dog isn’t 100% good off leash cuz I’m not 100% in training her. So now we start from scratch! Thank you
We use to walk our doxie without a leash all the time. We did a similar training to this. We wouldn’t let her leave us without correcting her. It took us a while for her to get it right since it was just us training her. Wish we had this video back then. We are going to try this technique with our new puppy! Thank you!
People complaining about Joel's methods are SOFT 😆
Thank you for your service Joel!
I've got amazing results with your method. Also my dog got more relaxed. Thank you so much for this content!!
I definitely just hit, SUBSCRIBE! With an 8 month old puppy who is wild on a leash, I needed this today!
That bit about letting the dog give itself the leash correction is brilliant. I will try it out
"you just bought yourself a ticket the other way"
The best thing about you is the repetition, you don't expect people to get it quickly, and you're right. Every time I watch a loose leash video I pick up another tiny detail.
Awesome bro, keep em coming 👍👍🐶♥️
Omgosh. Your videos have helped me/us. So much. We thank you 😊
This approach has helped my surging Labradoodle when many other approaches failed. I like the idea of forgoing being able to go for a walk if the dog is not ready to do loose leash walking. We are getting much better but I find myself saying to Jagger about once a walk :" I am going to do this all day".
I am a subscriber, I love this method AND the way you clearly described it !!!
