  • My friend Brijette runs San Diego Seed Company, the only organic-certified urban seed company in the USA. I toured her farm a few years back and loved it, so wanted to give you the three-year update on her progress at the farm. You'll learn about seed production, seed starting, growing tips, trellising, soil improvement, and some old classic seed cleaning machines she uses to grow and process high-quality seeds for your garden.

    This is funny, I just came across your company, watching this show about 10 minutes ago. Great site San Diego Seed Company, and Epic Gardening has been inspiring for me since I have seen your show on you tube. We live down here in Ft Lauderdale Florida, and today, actually one hour ago I have planted my first seed -- Everglades Tomatoes, and have 9 more buckets that I have prepped to plant lettuces, beets, herbs -- very energetic in looking forward to growing vegetables, being a native New Yorker this is really a unique experience.

    Cat's name is Black Beauty, named after the Eggplant. Also, I tried San Diego Seeds for the first time this year (inland northern california with hot summers) and everything from here thrived. Right now, the radishes I got from there (golden and watermelon) are doing better with our swinging weather (from high 80s to now low 30s at night) than any of the other radish seeds I planted. Thanks Epic Gardening for tlling us about this company and to San Diego Seed Company for the awesome seeds for us southern gardeners!

  • @abyssal_phoenix

    Yeah, my mulch doesn’t really work over there in such hot climates. I use moss. Moss doesn’t like heat and sun. But this year I found out that having moss as mulch kinda creates a symbiotic relationship with the other plants. The moss keeps the soil dry and cool, making it better suitable for the plants, the plants cast shadow over the moss, making the moss healthier. Moss grows way faster when planted with other plants, instead of how I originally grew it. (In open trays)

Ours are 18" x 26", you can fit a ton of seedings, the trays are super strong and can take the weight, and easy to move around as you need. I do not recognize the seed in the hopper... looks like a black pumpkin seed, but I have no idea. What is it? Very cool interview/story. Thank you for the seeds! I really appreciate it, I look forward to growing them. Without a doubt, Napali is my favorite cat. Thumb up icon cultivated, transformed to the happy blue color.

    I love San Diego seed co! I live in San Diego county and I'm a new gardener so I need all the help I can get😁. I had a 99% germination rate w/ the spring/& fall seeds and I just placed an order for different seeds

    Kevin and Brijette a tip re the trays: I hated buying and wasting so much plastic so this year I actually bought a soil block maker and it's an absolute game changer!! You simply take soil and press it into blocks so you don't have to buy trays, you don't have to transplant the seedlings and possibly hurt their roots because you just pick up the soil block and put it in its new home and the process of making the blocks is super easy and satisfying. Can only recommend it!

      FromNow2Infinity sounds such a good idea - but how do you prevent the soil block breaking apart when sprinkling water on it?

    • @FromNow2Infinity
      @FromNow2Infinity 3 роки тому +1

      @@vickyfarquhar3476 It never really was an issue. You press the blocks with wet soil so when you first plant your seeds, you don't need to water them for a bit. I put all the blocks next to each other in a case and they kind of supported each other. They are only meant to be used until your seeds have germinated so they didn't really break apart during that time. On the contrary, after transplanting them into their new homes, I could even see the original soil block after months of the plant being in new soil.

      FromNow2Infinity Thank you ! I'm planting spinach seeds today so shall definitely try it. (I have seen it done on a Chanel of traditional Chinese growing, called Liziqi, and assumed that there was something special in their soil that one could keep the blocks intact)

    Has Brijette trialed soil blocks for her seed starting? I know there are a billion recipes for soil blocking mix, but wouldn't that be a good alternative to plastic?
