    So proud of my home park! I remember how it was back before Fury, and it's incredible to see just how far the park has come.

    This park is fantastic. It's a great combination of rides and atmosphere. If I could tweak just a couple of things I would add back some water rides and put in more trees for shade. There are a lot of hot open exposed areas which can be an issue in the summer. You'd think one of the signature southern parks would really keep that in mind.

    Love this park. My wife and I just visited a couple weeks ago and had a great time. Really liked how they started a food and wine festival type thing with the State Line Festival. They need to up their food game on it, but I was happy to see the effort made. All in all, great park, always a good time there.

    I love this park. I'm from Germany and i had two very empty days at the park. Fury 325 is actually my favorite coaster. But Intimidator was also very nice. What do you need more? Okay, an Intamin Launcher would be nice. I will definitely come back, in the next few years. Nice video, as always.

    My home state’s park! Just visited it the other week for the first time since before Copperhead Strike and had a wonderful time. The big four there are absolutely amazing and are in my top 25 out of 92 as of right now, but for me outside of a few areas I wasn’t all that impressed with the atmosphere and theming of the park, which maybe I’m just used to going to the Florida parks all the time these days. The main entrance is wonderful being greeted by Fury and Intimidator, camp snoopy area is really pretty, and copperhead strike had some fantastic theming as well, but other than that I would like to see better atmosphere everywhere which they’re definitely on the right track to do. Fury and Copperhead definitely had the best ops.
    I have mixed feelings about people saying hurler should be RMCed just because I’d want Carowinds to have a huge ibox tracked ride and Hurler is pretty short in height and length.
    Hot take that might just be me, but I think Vortex should just get removed and replaced with an RMC Raptor. Meh ride, terrible dispatching.

    • @samuelahoffman
      @samuelahoffman 2 роки тому +2

      Fury and Copperhead should always have the fastest dispatches because guests can’t bring bags into the station

    • @tommyguerrera
      @tommyguerrera 2 роки тому +2

      @@samuelahoffman true true, which is nice for both those rides but I don’t like how there is only two rides where I have to rent a locker, and I don’t like that I can’t do an all day multiple location one like at many other parks. It’s like the same system too but they don’t have that option so every time I went to either ride had to rent a locker which wouldn’t be as annoying if it was consistent across the park

    I went to Carowinds in 2022 and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Both Afterburn and Fury 325 are excellent, with Fury becoming my number 1. This park has a solid collection of flat rides. Carolina Harbor was also fun. One bit of random fun occurred at this park for me. I drive a Jeep Wrangler, and I walked out and was greeted by a rubber duck.

    Great review! You covered it all! Carowinds is my home park, and I'm a perennial season pass holder. I agree with your thoughts on Nighthawk, Hurler and the need for a water ride. I do love the classic rides in County Fair, but some of the others are like you said, just "OK", meaning ride them once and then done (Ricochet, Scream Weaver, Drop Zone, the Cyclone, Vortex) I too bounce back and forth between Fury, Copperhead, After Burn and Intimidator. Fortunately those 4 alone are worth a 110 mile trip each time. Scarowinds is so slow with maze queues, the best part is the atmosphere. The smell, the fog, knowing there is a scare actor around every corner. I'm looking forward to Winterfest, the park looks great lit up!

    Went to Carowinds once in summer of 2019. Park was dead so I was able to get 19 rides on Fury in every row. Ops there gave me a lot of room for airtime as well. Fury was the only ride that had good ops even though they ran 2 trains, every other coaster had slow ops and ran one train. Intimidator and Copperhead Strike ran 2 out of 3. Nighthawk had a 45 minute line because of 7 minute dispatches and with one train ops, that's 6-7 trains per hour. It's possible ops are better on busier days. Park was clean and charming but not to the level of Kings Dominion or Knott's. Clientele was pretty ghetto when I went with a lot of line cutting, rude teenagers that can't stop cussing, and guests filming on rides illegally with the park not giving a damn about any of it. And some guests were completely ok with line cutting. (Do that at Great Adventure and you get kicked out and banned. I reported a line cutter to a Kingda Ka op once and they got security to ban the cutter.) Also there was a rude Chick Fil A employee that told me I couldn't get a refill there. Food was great overall, Harmony Hall is by far the best restaurant in the whole chain, and every time I ate there, they had a band doing ragtime covers of pop songs. Overall great park, third favorite in the chain, a park you can easily do everything in one day if crowds are low. If you're from out of town, be sure to spend a second day just to ride Fury over and over again. I had a hard time choosing this or KD better but I prefer Carowinds because I prefer Fury over I305 but barely.

    • @jspence
      @jspence 2 роки тому +1

      Line cutting was a huge issue when I went in early April. They were checking bands throughout the day but about 3 hours before the park closed only Fury and copperhead had people checking. It was mainly noticeable within larger groups of teens and many people called them out for not having a band but unfortunately the ride ops did nothing. Definitely slowed down the line and the crazy thing was how many people were doing it.

    I remember going there since I was at least ten years old and still remember it when it had the Paramount theme. I’m glad to see what Cedar has done with it, even if I haven’t been able to visit for a long time since coming to Korea. Nighthawk has been a mediocre to bad ride since it opened and was still themed to the Borg.

    Ok so long story-
    I love Carowinds so much but the last time I went there was in middle school and let me tell you, definitely gonna remember that day for the rest of my life.
    I was determined my first ever roller coaster was going to be Fury and it was, absolutely insane, still one of the best rides I’ve been on. My legs were wobbly after it but the smile on my face was so big.
    So after that I wanted to go on more but I wanted to take a break because once again, it was my first ever time going on something intense. But my dad had the bright idea to take me on drop tower immediately after, so I cried, I told him I didn’t want to, he said it was gonna be fine, you know normal stuff dads say when you’re scared! Got on the ride, hated it, afterwards, I felt super nauseous(side note: it was like 100 degrees outside too) so I decided to eat right after…just filled with good ideas there
    Anyways about 2 hours later, I still felt sick, but I also wanted to go on Afterburn, so we got in line, we were on the staircase just about to get on the ride, and that’s when…
    I threw up……yayyyyy
    So immediately my mom held my head over the railing, and…
    just as I thought it couldn’t get worse…
    I heard from right below me,”OMG MY HAIR”
    So tldr: ✨I threw up on somebody’s head✨
    …Yeah…Definitely gotta go back there to redeem myself after…that💀

    My first of many vist to Carowinds was 1977, I have seen so many changes in that park. Back in the day it had a monorail, jalopy cars, a paddle wheel river boat, a log flume, a train, and of course Thunder Road. I think the oldest things there now are the Sky Tower, the bumper cars, the "fun" house and a few of the kid rides. The Pavilion used to have a lot of big name acts also, dont hear much about it anymore.

  • @DCombz

    Thanks for the re-review of my home park. With Carowinds being one of their flagship parks I think it's one to pay attention to in regards to how they are changing their business model in the post-covid era. I think staffing issue affect Carowinds like any other park and businesses are learning that they less staff they have to have, the better. I think less coasters and thus less operations staff and more quality coasters and themed experiences is where they are going with the chain in the future. I think the next smart move for them to make would be to make a themed area in Dinosaur's Alive's plot similarly to what they did in Cedar Point and emphasizing the state lines at the front gate and through the park a little better like it was in the Paramount days. That's one thing Paramount did right.
    Nighthawk is closed for maintenance until end of spring because they're going to update the trains and keep it going presumably for a few more years. I say that because I saw Firehawk's trains right out in the open when riding Fury so expect them to keep it going for a while. Just confirming what we all knew would happen though. I think if any coaster in Carowinds goes, it's Vortex because the paint job on Carolina Cyclone tells me they plan on keeping it going for a while as well. And I don't mind even if it's just for being beautiful to look at. One of the greatest paint jobs I've seen on a coaster honestly.
    While I think converting Hurler with RMC and finally giving them a well needed ejector airtime machine is their next best coaster move I really don't know what they are going to do. Something like Infinity Falls at Seaworld would be a big crowd pleaser but between Volcano and now Dragster I don't think Cedar Fair has a great relationship with Intamin. A high capacity water ride would eat people along with the water park so it's still a win for coaster enthusiasts in terms of line lengths. Speaking of which, I think an interesting thing to note is that they took away fast lane plus and just went with fast lane and only -really- enforce it on Fury/Copperhead/Goldrusher and only half of the time Afterburn/Intimidator/other attractions. It's also a staffing issue thing.

      I honestly prefer the Paramount days. While I like Cedar Fair, I do not like how they are making their parks all look the same. The entrance for Carowinds is ok, but it is just a copy paste from Cedar Point's entrance. I much preferred the plantation entrance. The park was more unique under Paramount, and it seems like Cedar Fair is stripping all their parks of their originality.

    Scrolling through the comments made me think of the last time I visited a local amusement park. My parents had dropped me and my friends off that afternoon. We were having a good time. We were trying to get on as many rides as we could since we were only going to be there for a few hours. There was a decent amount of people in the park when we first got there. However, as the sun started going down, the crowd started to dwindle a bit. After a while, dusk set in and the sun started to go down.
    It was 6:48pm. I remember because I was checking to see how much time we had left. We had just gotten off a rollercoaster and I needed to take a break and use the restroom. I told my friends I would be right back. I was only in there for a few minutes. However, when I came out, I couldn’t see my friends. I looked around a bit, but I didn’t think too much of it at the time. I figured maybe they went ahead and got back in line for the roller coaster. So I headed for the ride entrance. When I got near the entrance, I started peeking at the queue line. There was still a small crowd of people hanging around the plaza near the entrance. I didn’t see them so I kept looking around. I even looked back towards the restroom I had just left to see if maybe I missed them on the way out. And that’s when things started to get weird.
    Out of the corner of my, I could make out someone standing near the lockers which were close by the ride entrance. I kind of got this feeling that made me hesitate to get a more direct look at the person. As I kept looking around, I felt a slight cool breeze on my neck as the sun which had kept us warm earlier in the day was now setting below the horizon. It was getting darker. It was getting colder. I started to get this uneasy feeling. It was like this feeling that someone was watching me. I turned back around to look at the entrance to see if I had just missed seeing my friends. That’s when I saw him.

    There was this man standing there and he was staring right at me. He just stood there, staring. He didn’t move. He stood there glaring his eyes right at me. It wasn’t a curious kind of stare or a look of joy someone might have watching a kid having fun. It was just a blank kind of stare. A creepy kind of stare. It was beyond creepy actually. It was a sinister look …one that puts the fear of death in you. What’s worse is that he didn’t even seem to blink. My heart felt like it dropped all the way down to my stomach. I was thinking..hoping that maybe he wasn’t really looking at me. Maybe he was looking at someone behind me. Maybe he had a family member or friend that was right behind me. I quickly looked behind me. ..No one was there.

    I was really starting to get nervous. My friends were nowhere in sight and my parents wouldn’t pick me up for another hour or so. I begrudgingly looked back thinking maybe I was just imagining things. However, he was still standing there. He kept standing there, staring at me, right into my eyes. It was as if he wasn’t just staring at me but staring through me; a stare that felt like it could pierce right through my soul. I froze in fear. I couldn’t move. My hands gripped my lanyard that was dangling from my neck so tight, I thought it might break off. I could only hear occasional screams coming from the ride behind me. Never have I ever found those kinds of screams sound so comforting. As they were screams of excitement and fun, knowing that the thrill would eventually come to an end. My eyes seemed to stay transfixed on his eyes. I couldn’t look away. It was almost like I was in a trance. It’s like when you’re sitting on your couch with your blanket watching a horror movie alone at home in the dark and trying to look away during a climactic scene, but you just can’t help peeking at the tv screen to see what happens. My mind started to race with endless thoughts. Why does he keep staring at me? Did I accidentally cut him off in line? Do I know him? Does he know me? Does he know my parents? He didn’t look like any of my friends’ dads.
    The more thoughts that raced through my mind, the more crazy they became. Maybe he was a former ex-boyfriend of my mom who she never spoke of that she dumped and is now bent on getting revenge on her family. She never did talk much about her past or about any former boyfriends she may have had. Maybe he is a disgruntled worker from my dad’s workplace who got fired and now wants revenge on his family. After all, I’m not really sure exactly what my dad does at work. Maybe he’s a supervisor. Maybe it’s something even more crazy. Maybe my dad’s a spy and this guy is some type of foreign adversary that wants to threaten his family for whatever secrets he knows. I know what you’re thinking. This is crazy. But you’d be surprised how your mind works when you’re under duress.

    As he relentlessly kept glaring at me, I kept thinking about who this could be and asking myself why he wouldn’t leave me alone. Maybe it’s just some psycho. Maybe this guy had a rough life and he had finally had enough that he finally just snapped. Maybe he had a really nice life and he just had a random psychotic break for some unexplained reason. After all, you never really know what makes someone go crazy. I was afraid to keep looking at him. I was afraid not to. What if I walked away and he started to follow me. What if I walked away and he was waiting for me at another ride or even at the exit. What if …what if I turned my back and then seconds later I felt a cold rough hand grab the back of my nec- just then, I felt a hard slap on my back.

    I turned around. It was my friends patting me on the back. Man, was I ever glad to see them. They were all excited. They had just gotten off another ride that was close by. They thought they would get in an extra ride while I was in the restroom.
    I was still a bit in shock to say much. They wanted to get on the roller coaster again now that it was dark in order to get in one last night ride. They started heading for the entrance. I didn’t move initially as I was still trying to loosen up after being gripped in fear for what seemed like an eternity. The whole thing seemed like it took forever but I’m sure it probably only took a minute or two. There was still a chill in the air. My friends had gone on ahead and walked to the queue line. I didn’t want to look back towards the lockers where the man was standing. Then I heard a loud bang.

    Out of sheer reaction, I peeked back towards the noise. It was in the direction of the lockers. …I wished; I hoped that the man would not still be there. Please God, please don’t let him be there. My eyes gazed over by the lockers. My heart dropped again. A girl had just thrust her locker door shut after getting her belongings out.
    I took a deep breath and gave the area one last look. I didn’t see the man. He was gone. He was gone for now. I looked back towards the ride entrance, almost forcing myself not to look towards the lockers again in hopes of fooling myself in to thinking everything is now safe. I quickly rushed back and caught up to my friends who were already in line.

    I’ll never forget that night. To this day, I still wonder who it was and if I’ll ever see him again. I will never go back to those lockers. Even now, I try not to make eye contact with anyone in a crowd. You just never know who might have eyes on you.

    This park frustrates me, it has so much potential to be super great. Definitely lacking a water attraction outside of the water park. Would be nice to have 1-2 waterpark rides, combined with a RMC of Hurler, and a major coaster at the front to replace nighthawk, i.e. floorless dive, would definitely raise the stock for this place.

    Great park. I went there the other day for the first time and it was fun. One big problem though was that it had very inconsistent operations on the rides. Fury, Hurler, and Carolina Cyclone had a lot of issues with slow dispatches that really hurt the wait time. Part of this may have been because a lot of the other guests were not following instructions and were being generally rude to other guests and employees, and nothing was really done about it. It was decently busy with a lot of young teenagers without parents, so that may be why. We went back the next day and it was mostly fine, except Fury still had issues with getting trains out in a timely manner. There weren’t any issues on Copperhead Strike, Afterburn or Intimidator though.

    I had so much fun when I visited Carowinds last year. It wasn't as good as King's Island and Cedar Point, but I too believe it'll get there one day. I love Fury 325, Intimidator, Afterburn, and Copperhead Strike! Nighthawk was great too, and Ricochet IMO was the sleeper hit of the park. I hope Vortex goes floorless, that way I could get to ride it, hopefully. An RMC Hurler would be awesome too!

      Late to the comment but it will definitely get there! They bought the park from Paramount in 2006 and that's when changes started happening, it's been taking them awhile to renovate and add rides but I can see it catching up to King's Island and Cedar Point in the close future.

    I heard that cedar fair, and RMC will be working together sometime this year. And people, and coaster enthusiasts are saying that hurler might finally get RMC, or they will add a single railed coaster to the park. Because people are saying if they RMC hurler, they won’t have a wooden coaster anymore. And with a park with such a large selection of coaster, they basically need a wooden. So, if they RMC hurler they will have to add another wooden coaster. And people just don’t see that happening. We just gotta wait and see.

    • @kevbo2981
      @kevbo2981 2 роки тому

      A GCI would be perfect. They should still RMC hurler, though. But I do hope they put a woody where the dinosaurs alive land used to be or where the rapids was at. I also do hope they remove nighthawk and put either a dive coaster or single rail.

      I would MUCH rather have an RMC in the park over a GCI. They can do that down the road (or preferably get a Gravity Group or Intamin prefab).

    Aeronauts Landing looks sick asf. Definitely gonna round out the area from Afterburn to where Carolina Cobras is located. One minor issue besides the lack in quality of their supporting coasters is they have alot of open areas where a flat ride could fit. Like there's a mini space near by intimidator that could fit a great minor flat ride.

    Intimidator and fury really complement each other. They are completely different rides, but both are great in their own way. Kinda like Diamondback and Orion at Kings Island.
    And don't sleep on ricochet or Woodstock Express. You won't code brown on those two but they are absolutely smile-makers.

    I grew up in Rock Hill, SC so Carowinds was the hangout spot in high school after classes. It was Paramount at that time though. They need to get a hybrid coaster in there. The Hurler is still rough even though they replaced some track. Sure that coaster will be a nightmare in the future with replacing track. It’s up there where Thunder Road was for roughness. Launch is always good. Copper Head Strike is fun but I don’t think it would hurt to have one more. Please get nighthawk out of there. Prime real state for something better. Signage really can bring people on a coaster. Changing the name on Intimidator was cool but three signage is not up to par like others.
