Food Storage: How to Extend the Shelf Life of Nuts and Seeds
Вставка

- I'm a huge fan of nuts and seeds so it makes sense to include them in my prepper pantry. However, nuts and seeds tend to have a short shelf life due to the healthy fats that they contain.
In this video, I'll show you how I extend the shelf life of nuts and seeds by storing them in a low oxygen environment in a cool location.

Thanks for sharing these tips on extending the shelf life of nuts and seeds.
Thanks for this video. For now I have been storing nuts and seeds in the freezer/ refrigerator but would like to be storing more nuts and have been looking for more tips and how to do this, so thanks for the info!!
Great idea for vacuum sealing the Mason jars, I usually store my seeds in Mason jars and nuts in the freezer - I've never had them go rancid, but I also eat them all the time.
Thank you so much for sharing all this information. It surprises me that baking nuts would not extend their life. Baking them would remove most of their inner dampness and therefore extending their life. Thank you for any light you can shine on this and God Bless.
Very interested in the survival kit that you mentioned several times. I hope you will do a video soon!
Glad you posted this. I'd like to store my stash for atleast 2yrs.
Enjoy your videos. Thank you and God bless you both.
I have Walnut trees, and grow pumpkins. Thanks for the help on preserving them.
I like the survival pack idea. As for vacuum sealing plus O2 absorber - you could fully eliminate the oxygen in vacuum sealed foods with just a tiny O2 absorber to mop up any residual O2.
Thanks for the info. I keep my nuts in original packaging...either jars or zip closure bags.
Learned a lot from this video. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much, Kylene! Wonderful as usual...
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great information. Thank you so much.
This is great information, thank you!
I🎉 vacuum seal in food saver bags and freeze. Thank you 😮 the videos.
Great idea!!
Great advice just what I was looking for amidst all the madness of the world.
Wow! Your pantry is my dream!
I hope your dream comes true!
Good informational video ,thanks for sharing ,God bless !
I feel so encouraged by this. When you said you had MS, I suddenly didn’t feel so alone. (I have multiple AI conditions, do my best to prepare for our family, and am a member of the same faith that you are.) thank you for sharing this. It was just what I needed to hear today to do just a little something today to be more prepared for later.
@@TheProvidentPrepper I;m at the last stage of MS. There are many people on here confused about adding an o2 absorber to the nuts. you really need to address that as I am also confused.
I am just now seeing this comment. I'm sorry that it got lost in the shuffle. You are not alone. We can conquer this with God's help. I've learned that I should slow down and not stress about things. @@daschundloverable I'm so sorry to hear about your battle with MS. Sorry I didn't get to this sooner. You got this!!
Dang...the vacuum seal is awesome
Great video!
Thanks for the info
Thank you!
I use the jar seal attachment, but also put an oxygen pack in :)
I love the mini mylar bags. Great for camping snacks.
what size ox. absorber if you are also vac. sealing?
Hi! Love your videos!! ❤️ 🤗 Can you make one on how to storage long term low carb food? I'm diabetic and mostly all long term food are high in carbs.😔
1/2 gallon jars, oxygen, vacuum seal and into the Prepper Pantry they go! My working pantry I only use vacuum sealing each opening.
I vacum seal..and use an oxygen absorber when jaring nuts and seeds!
I have always kept walnuts, pecans and almonds (all raw) in the freezer so they will be there when I want to use them. But recently, I vacuum-sealed some in jars and others in mylar with an oxygen absorber. I don't use them fast, so I hope this will keep them longer. I have them in my basement.
Vacuum seal with an oz absorber. Might change depending on original packaging, after learning about the nitrogen pack.
I store my nuts in the freezer. It's one of the few items that are mandatory with my limited freezer space. I had almonds go rancid in a year still in their manufacturer's packaging. So I purchased new almonds and they joined the walnuts and pecans in my freezer.
Living in SC, I have basement envy. I am new at this storage. I am having to store in the areas of house.
I'm in Georgia and I, too, understand basement envy.
Can you give us an idea how long nuts will last when vacuumed sealed with or without an oxygen absorber, since they contain fat? Thank you for making this video.
I received Chia seeds by accident from Amazon. Through that I learned that I love Chia seeds. I really like them in my oatmeal. It gives the oatmeal a small bit of a nutty taste. They also help me curb my appetite. I feel fuller longer when added to other foods.
Thank you for this information.
@@TheProvidentPrepper can i store my nuts (pecans, almonds, walnuts, etc.) in the crisper drawers?
if i can store them in these drawers, which crisper drawer do i use: the one with high humidity, or the one with low humidity?
I have native pecan trees and have a bumper crop this year. I just canned 19 1/2 pt jars. For several years I have canned the pecans, after heating in over at 200 degrees just until hot. I use hot, dry, steralized jars and either pressure can or hot water bath can. They keep for years.
Hi Kylene, i have a question...
which nuts/seeds are considered too high in oils to use an oxygen absorber on safely? because all i was ever told was not to use an O2 absorber on "oily" foods because of botulism... but i think maybe i misunderstood what that meant!
I would really love to be able to extend more of the storage life of my seeds and nuts because i also should be eating far more things like that...
(i usually vacuum seal with my food saver in mason jars but would love t add an O2 absorber if i knew which ones were safe)
I know, me too.
Botulism needs water (not oil) to survive.
I thought the same thing.
We put the bulk pecans in Mason jars then Vacuum sealed with VacMaster in chamber, and last of all placed in the deep freeze.
I use the unopened original container in a dark cabinet.
I love your videos and methods has really helped me. I have a question if don't mind, you said you have MS how do you prepare your medications etc? I'm asking because I have similar disease and no one talks bout prepping with chronic diseases. Sorry, if made videos on it I'm fairly new to your channel and absolutely love and trust your information ❤❤❤
@@TheProvidentPrepper thank you, I didn't think to ask the doctor for preparation in emergencies. Im sorry for your disease too. ❤❤❤
Do you have a video that shows what you have in your emergency kit? If not, then that would be a great video lesson.
I usually vacuum-seal nuts in Quart mason jars with a 300cc Oxygen absorber in there also for extra protection :-)
I just got 2 bags of honey nut granola, total fat 6g a serving. Can I put an oxygen absorber in each open bag and then store it in a mylar bag, or would it be better to vacuum seal in quart jars? Thanks for another great video!
Did you have to place something on top like a coffee filter to keep the powdered crumbs from sucking up the dusty debris from keeping it from sealing
have you used apothecary jars ithe the sealed lids like yankee candle jars as well?
That pantry is amazing! I want to know how to prep in a tiny house or van /caravan
I have a converted van and carry a lot of dehydrated foods, canned meats and freeze dried foods. More compact and lighter in weight and most importantly all shelf stable.
Nuts and seeds can be put in the freezer for up to 7 years. I always store my nuts and seeds in a drawer in the fridge. Been doing that for decades. Can't do this with honey roasted peanuts!!!
A question I have is to use the nuts from the freezer, how long is the thaw? I heard that bread can be frozen too but it'd need to thaw before usage for a few hours. Thanks for the tip.
I am confused. I thought you could not use an oxygen absorber for high fat items.
I was wondering the same thing.
Exactly my thoughts. It's Dangerous to my knowledge to use o2 absorbers with fatty or oily foods. Nuts are in this category. One other thought is that I read that the food saver vacume seal jar attachment removes air but not all of the oxygen therefore safe?
@Jolley Mountain Nana Hello, I was wondering if you found anymore info on seeds and oxygen? 😊 Thanks
@@kimbrgv I didn't look any more. For now I am going to leave them in their packages or maybe vacuum seal them in Jars. I won't use oxygen absorbers.
Maybe the reason it is ok to use O2 absorbers with nuts and seeds is because the oil in them has not been extracted. In other words, the oils in them are still part of the structure of the nut or seed. Other oily foods they have said not to use the O2 absorbers with were foods that had oil as an ingredient in them. I am guessing, but does that make sense?
Could you provide a link for the heat sealer you are using?
QUESTION:
Can I completely dethaw my frozen nuts and then vacuum seal them?
I noticed that you leave the rings on jars after vacuuming with either the freeze dryer or Food saver. Do you store with them on?
Can't using oxygen absorbers increase the risk of botulism due to the fat content in the nuts and seeds
What about trail mix? That contains Cran raisins and chocolate. Thank you for your response.
Wow, you read the questions in my mind with this video. I have been thinking about how to store nuts and seeds. I do have one question: you have mentioned over time about using re-purposed plastic bottles. When you do repurpose a plastic bottle, will an oxygen absorber be used? I am not a fan of plastic, but it is lighter, won’t break, and of course you can be repurposing something that you already have. Again, thanks so much for reading my mind!
yes use an o2 absorber.
How do you open them when you are ready to use?
Can I put an o2 absorber in a vacuum sealed mason jar that has dehydrated eggs in it. Or are they too oily?
So you need to both vacuum seal or freeze dry and freeze?
From the research I have done nuts have to high of a moisture level to be using oxygen absorbers they can cause botulism that thrives in the absence of oxygen
I have birds and want to get more food for them but not sure how to store it? Any ideas ? Much appreciated 👍
Hi, can i seal shredded coconut that comes in regular bags?
Most prepper youtube sites store nuts and seeds as you describe. But occasionally I come across discussions on botulism and without stating there is a problem, they say not to use oxygen absorbers for nuts and seeds. Is there any moisture in nuts and seeds that might encourage botulism in a non oxygen environment?
Do you know how to store nut, coconut, and other non regular flours- I freeze but wonder if there is a better way ex: mylar or jars with air removed Have not been able to find anything on this and you seem so to be so knowledgeable (I'm new at this) - or maybe you could point me to someone that does use these kind of flours- again thanks in advance
What is the white machine that you fold the top down on the top of the bag?
Have you tried Reishi mushroom powder for your MS?
can you vacuum pack harvest crunch with raisin and almonds In Jars And how long will it last Thank`s
Where did you get the sealer for mylar bags?
i luve the mason jar storage idea.. but we are in an earthquake possibility place .. That would cause a lot of broken glass..
Hi Kylene and Jonathan! I have learned SO, SO, SO much from your videos and website (and I will continue to learn!). I've learned so much that I don't consider myself a "newbie" anymore. My prepper pantry is growing rapidly and so is my peace of mind. One topic that I am NOT 100% certain of and 100% TERRIFIED of is..BOTULISM! I want to understand it completely so I am confident that it is NOT invited into my long term storage. I have a pretty good understanding of it with "wet" canning and reasons behind pressure canning vs. water bath. But I am lacking in understanding dry food storage. I understand the why behind boiling as a safe guard, but some dry foods (nuts as an example) aren't something I would boil? Do you have a video about this? If not, could you make one? Thanks :)
@@TheProvidentPrepper - Hi :) It is my understanding that Oxygen Absorbers and/or Vacuum Sealing DOES prevent moisture because moisture is H2O. And so without the O there can be no H2O.
Now having said that... Oxygen Absorbers and/or Vacuum Sealing will get rid of over 99% of the oxygen, But there IS still a tiny bit of oxygen remaining which can eventually be a problem in the long run.
@@TheProvidentPrepper I'll do my best to explain my understanding of it:
1) Cooking the beans above 170 degrees for 5 or 10 minutes will kill any botulinum bacteria. However, that won't kill the botulinum spores. (But the spores aren't usually a problem for healthy adults). Now having said that... Oxygen absorbers will draw the oxygen out of air. But not out of liquids/foods. Vacuum sealing moist beans will extend the shelf life, but not by a whole lot. Maybe 3 or 4 times longer. But definitely not years and years, unless frozen.
2) Like many people, I keep my spare oxygen absorbers in a sealed mason jar. And sure enough, the next day I can see little droplets of liquid on the inside of the jar. So what gives??? How is there little droplets of H2O if over 99 percent of the O has been absorbed into the packets??
The only answer is that those droplets are not H2O. The droplets are liquified nitrogen due to the pressure drop.
I hope this helps. 😁

Hi, you mentioned in another video (also on your website) that nuts should NOT be stored with oxygen absorbers. However now you said that "The guideline with dry goods is less than 10% moisture is SAFE to use an oxygen absorber", that makes me feel very confused.
If you use the clear front mylar- only for maybe a one to three year storage - will putting in a large food bucket with lid or even a rectangular store container keep them safe for that amount of time- we buy in bulk but not looking for 25 year storage- thanks in advance for helping me- just found your channel -
I like the clear front Mylar for short term "fun" storage. Get quality like from PackFreshUSA. Keep them out of light and in a secondary storage container and I'd actually feel comfortable for 5 years or so ... just not 25. packfreshusa.com/?rfsn=7503114.ecc85c Use the promo code PROVIDENT to receive 10% off your purchase.

7:18 what do you mean you can use it over and over again (as you are sealing it)? Are you suggesting you can seal it over and over again, or that the zip allows you to use that bag over time as you deplete what is in it?
@@TheProvidentPrepper No, you didn't say it but you did say reusable while you reached for the sealer so I was looking for clarification. Thanks. Great video!
What about the oils while sealing? Do you use oxygen absorber in Mylar bags.
What is the brand of that heat sealer? I am having trouble finding one that can to mylar bags.
I use my iron
What is the thing you use to press the ziplock?
Why can you use oxygen absorber's for nuts and seeds, but not brown rice?
you forgot to mention your able to store the nutz not so much due to the vacuum seal but more because the oxygen absorber but because the absorber takes away the oxygen but more importantly because it leaves the nitrogen inside which helps keep the preservation
Many long distance runners eat chia seeds because they release energy over time
I hope you see this since this video is a year old. I couldn’t tell if you were putting oxygen absorbers in them or not. I love nuts and seeds and would love to be able to store them outside the freezer.
Check the moisture content on this site fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/ Nuts and seeds that are low in moisture are candidates for storage in a low oxygen environment.
Bulk nut storing advice with low amount of space to work with?
As always great content. I've heard a lot that nuts and seeds should not have an oxygen absorber because of the high fat content. Can you explain your reasoning? Just curious.
I heard the same thing
In my understanding the oxygen absorbers extend the shelf life a little bit, but if kept this way over a longer period the moisture and fat content could cause botulism potentially.
@@TheProvidentPrepper in a nutshell 🤣
@@Allison.What is "a long period of time"? 1 year, 5? At what point should I be worried about botulism? For something so deadly and gives no signs of spoilage, seems pretty risky.
I’m so confused! All I’ve ever heard was to never ever never use O2 absorbers in with nuts (and any high fat content) Is this something new? Please and thank you 🙏
What about a brake bleeder?
I didn't think you were supposed to use oxygen absorbers with nuts because of the high fat content? So it's ok to seal in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers?
HOW MUCH LONGER DO THESE FOODS LAST PAST THE EXP DATE??
The oil in pecans, want that make them go bad faster even with an oxygen pack?
I am VERY confused. A previous video re: the storage of nuts said NOT to use oxygen absorbers when packaging. HELP. I am in the process of putting up some raw seeds and nuts for medium term storage. Should I use the oa with vacumn sealing in mason jars?
I'm in the same boato, and other prepper channels don't clear up the issue, same for raisins storage....can't get a straight answer. I will leave out the oxygen absorber.
Kylene, just watched another video where you also showed pumpkin seed storage and you stated never to use an O2 in the jar, However, here you just showed you added an O2 to a jar of pumpkin seeds? I'm confused can you put O2 in with nuts for LT storage???
@@TheProvidentPrepper great thank you for your reply and the infor.
@@TheProvidentPrepper I am confused, this link specifically listed nuts as not suitable for long term storage (listed under dry goods with either too much moisture, oils or other concerns)
I really really want to store nuts and seeds this way, but this provided link does not support this. Is there additional information you have come across?
@@TheProvidentPrepper Thank you so much for this link and your response.
Is the high fat content in pecans be a problem for Mylar for long term food storage
They are super high in fat fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/2346395/nutrients like around 73 percent. They are not going to store long term. I would just keep them with short term storage and keep them rotated. Perhaps vacuum seal them in mason jars would help extend the life but it won't make them store long term.
How would I store flax seeds?
I have nuts in my freezer that’s been in their for about 4 years. I bought them on sale back then. Guess I better keep them in their. I don’t think it will be a good idea to remove them, thaw them for a few days and repackage. I think they’d go rancid. Right? Is my thinking process correct?
I would open them and smell them. They will smell rank if they went rancid which I doubt. I keep nuts in jars and bags in the freezer and pantry and they are fine, taste great! If you have more than one bag, try opening one and test it. If you haven't eaten them in four years, you probably won't ever eat them anyway. I am saying this from my own experience. I seem to always overbuy and then never use whatever it was that I bought too much of....lol!!!!
I just found 2 1kg packs of ground almond with used by date of Oct 2020 in my mums cupboard🤦♀️. One is open. I don't want to throw them but not sure can save
If it tastes fine it's safe to eat. No need to toss, it's just a little degraded. That's not crazy expired, but needs to be used asap.
I so confused now. Can you use oxygen absorbers with nuts?
My understanding was do not use oxygen absorbers in a product that has more than 10% moisture. Nuts and seeds have oils/ moisture. Is there a list of what not to use the oxygen absorbers with. I do not know how to figure out the moisture content if the items I wish to store. Thank you
I would like an answer to this too. I've seen the question asked over a dozen times in different ways and never see it answered. I think they're avoiding the question because maybe there is a minute possibility of botulism, I don't know.
I thought you weren’t supposed to use oxygen absorbers with things with oils. Am I wrong?
What is a 3 strike food?
I thought you said you can't use oxygen absorbers in nuts because they are not less than 10% moisture?
I still feel somewhat confused. I really need to know specifically. I put oxygen absorbers in mason jars with walnuts and reused jars were used to store planters peanuts also with oxygen absorbers. The peanuts are regular, not dry roasted so they do have oil. Also, I stored craisins in a reused jar where I also used oxygen absorbers. I packaged them between this past November and December 2023. Should I leave them? Should I throw them away or repackage them and use only mason jars and vacuum seal them. I would so appreciate your advice on this. Thank you!
All of the items you mentioned are short term storage items. I wouldn't throw them away because it has only been a few months. Reused jars may be just fine as long as they are air tight. You can check moisture content of foods here fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/174262/nutrients I can't specifically advise you but understand that items that are good candidates for long term storage in a reduced oxygen environment are less than 10 percent moisture and low in fat. The beef jerky you purchase in the store almost always has an oxygen absorber in it. However it is only intended for short term storage.
@TheProvidentPrepper Would you please advise on storing dehydrated nuts long term. I have soaked them (walnuts and almonds) and dehydrated for 12-24 hrs till crisp and dry. Can I vacuum seal these nuts in mason jars with moisture absorber? I am trying to put away for baking Pantry in a shtf situation. Will this be a safe option? I really appreciate your response as I can't find any information on this.
I vacuume sealed 25 lb cornmeal and cream of wheat 9 months ago.now i hear about botulism. Can get in.can you tell me if it is still good
No, you should be fine. The concern is with cooked foods like granola and high fat foods.
Thank you much
How long is the shelf life for the nuts & seeds?
I'd like to hear their experience too. I've heard some have had peanuts like 5-6 years.
I think a lot of us would like to know what the shelf life is.
Should you ever use a silica packet with nuts? With dehydrated almonds and walnuts vac sealed? Or raw pecans? .....in hot and muggy south :(
Personally I would not. I'd stick with the oxygen absorber or vacuum seal. You dehydrated your almonds and walnuts?
@@TheProvidentPrepper hello.... thank you! Yes, I recently learned of this method. I soak them in water a few hours first to start sprouting process said that this lessens the anti-nutrients, and stuff we don't want that are in some nuts. They come out very crispy and more easily digested. I don't eat them frequently so I'm trying to extend their storage as best I can!
I buy my nuts in bulk because I am vegan and use a lot, so I vacuum seal with oxygen absorbers
better safe than sorry when it comes to botulism imo
I find covering my nuts in chocolate protects them from oxygen and moisture. I protect my chocolate from going white by only getting chocolate with the hard glossy outer shells. LOL. I laugh, but I am kinda only half joking.
