  • As a kayaking instructor I created this series of videos on knots to introduce members of our club Sligo Kayak Club (Sligo, Ireland), and any anyone else who may be interested, to rope work.
This short video will demonstrate how to tie the single and double fisherman's knot.
The single fisherman's knot basically consists of an overhand knot tied onto each opposing line while the double fisherman's knot consists of a double overhand knot (strangle knot) tied onto each opposing line. This exact same technique can be extended to create a triple (or even quadruple) fisherman's knot if required.
This knot can bind up so tight that it can be difficult to untie however it is a damn secure way of joining two ropes and is a must-know knot!
Any gauge of rope or cord will be sufficient for training purposes but it's best to use at least 2' (60cm) of length.
Feedback, comments, questions are all welcomed.
Please excuse the quality of this one-take, recording!
DISCLAIMER: The information in this video has been presented in good faith, for training purposes only. While much effort has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the information presented, no responsibility is accepted for incidents arising out of use or misuse of this information.
Activities requiring the use of ropes can be potentially hazardous and it is the user's responsibility to sufficiently educate themselves on safe rope practices. Please seek proper training before using any knots in real life settings.

I totally disagree with the negative comments. I watch dozens of knot tutorials never being able to follow them. I watched this one time, and it felt like I was doing magic! I just tied my first square and zeplin knots tonight because thanks for your videos!

Just one tip, mate? I found this video in need of a suitable knot for my kayak rope. Having not tied many before, I'd have liked your tying to be just a bit slower so I could follow along easier. Instruction was great, but a bit more time for beginners would have been appreciated. Cheers!

Thank you for your feedback. That's down to nerves to be honest 🙂 I need to remake some of these and I'll definitely slow them down in future 👍🙂

Unfortunately, as others have said, you are too fast and your hands obscure some of the movements.
