How to daisy chain a sea kayak tow rope
As a kayaking instructor I created this series of videos on knots to introduce members of our club, Sligo Kayak Club (Sligo, Ireland), and any anyone else who may be interested, to rope work.
This video will demonstrate how to daisy chain a sea kayaking tow rope.
A long tow rope is recommended for sea kayaking in rough conditions however a long line e.g. 14m, can be a pain to work with in calm conditions when you need to deploy and pack multiple times. A daisy chain allows you to reduce the working length of the tow line, yet deploy it to full length when required.
Please make sure to test this in calm conditions before taking it into rougher conditions!
Feedback, comments, questions are all welcomed.
Please excuse the quality of this one-take, recording!

This video will demonstrate how to tie a bowline knot. The bowline knot is a 'must know' knot, it is arguably the most important knot to learn (certainly top three)! As a kayaking instructor I created this series of videos on knots to introduce members of our club Sligo Kayak Club (Sligo, Ireland), and any anyone else who may be interested, to rope work. This short video will demonstrate three common methods for joining ropes together using what are called 'bends'. We will also very briefly discuss the merits of each method. The knots/bends covered in this ...

TY BROSKIII THIS HELPED OUT A LOt 💙💙🙏🙏
Just one tip, mate? I found this video in need of a suitable knot for my kayak rope. Having not tied many before, I'd have liked your tying to be just a bit slower so I could follow along easier. Instruction was great, but a bit more time for beginners would have been appreciated. Cheers!
Thank you for your feedback. That's down to nerves to be honest 🙂 I need to remake some of these and I'll definitely slow them down in future 👍🙂
Hi....thanks for posting this videos, it gave me the confidence to setup my own tow belt and is very much appreciated. Keep posting all tips and tricks, thanks again......
Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you found it useful 🙂👍
Perfect
Ty brother
Hope you found it useful 👍🙂
some1 test it verse zipplem 6-9
Sheetbond and square knot they same
I totally disagree with the negative comments. I watch dozens of knot tutorials never being able to follow them. I watched this one time, and it felt like I was doing magic! I just tied my first square and zeplin knots tonight because thanks for your videos!
Thank you very much for your support, it's greatly appreciated. Best of luck with your knots 👍🙂

Excellent!
Thank you very much 🙂👍
Unfortunately, as others have said, you are too fast and your hands obscure some of the movements.
Slow down your playback speed. It’s in the settings
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate your feedback and will certainly take it on board. I think I need to reshoot this one 🙂
Speed up your eyesight or don't attempt this knot.
Slowdown your playback speed
Guess I need to slow down. Thanks for the comment 🙂
To fast. Slowndown for teaching purpose
Slowdown your playback speed. In the settings
Thanks for the feedback. Will definitely slow down in future. I'm new to making videos 😉
Nicely explained, Thank You Sir.
Square knit should have the ends going to SAME side. The one you show first is a "sugar knit or thief knot!!!
Yep that is correct, an error on my part. Intend to do a remake when I get time. Thanks for the feedback 👍
Perfect. Clear. Concise. Thanks. 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks. Glad it was helpful!
That you for showing and explaining how you set up this daisy chain set up on your tow rope. Im going to set my tow belt like this, I looks much easier to manage and easy to use as a short tow line or very quickly converts to a longer tow rope.
Not at all. I hope it was useful. Good luck with it. Would be great to get your feedback after you test it out.
I have the same system on my tow rope, except I use a smaller snap gate carabiner (nautical type), and it’s a Whetman aswell. My one issue with the Whetman is the size and weight of the “Kraken” or whatever it’s called. I see you’ve added a float. If the tow gets abandoned at both ends the kraken will sink like a stone otherwise. I’m thinking of replacing it with a floating clip.
@@DAllan-lz3lgthat was a good idea. The one it came with is quite heavy. This actually came with the float too so I didn't need to install it.
It is said that the Zeppelin "knot" (bend or loop) is the best one known to humanity, but also that it is difficult to learn/tie and prone to result in something else. Yet there is such an easy, fast, rational and foolproof method to tie them even under quite adverse situations, wherever you might be. That is basically explained here (ua-cam.com/video/nNNyzbiuP70/v-deo.html) but with minor modifications quite easy to accomodate for yourself, I can easily and with no rush tie and sort of dress either the loop or the bend in 17-18 seconds. (To make the bend, it is the working end of the second cord what goes into the "ear" and finishes the procedure.) On the other hand, just try to use the 69 method when the wind is howling above the cliff or the waves and the wind are trying to blow you away. Yet it would not be wise to discard that exceptional "knot". If the Zeppelin is underknown and underused it is because Mr. Ashley never heard of it and then some people kept saying that there were easier (but in real life never better) bends and loops to learn and that was certainly wrong, quite wrong. Both have been benchproven to be quite strong, reliable and amazingly friendly to untie even after the heaviest loads. And they are so easy to tie once you learn the correct procedure. If there is one reasonable but quite minor criticism to mention, it may be that they are not post-eye. So What?
niiiiiiice ! THANKS !!
Thanks for the feedback! Hope you found it useful 👍🙂
A very nice introduction, looking forward to seeing the updated version.
I have been sick for many weeks but hoping to do the updated video very soon 🤞🙂
A very clear tutorial. Your system of progression is an excellent way to reduce confusion and helped me to understand these various hitches for the first time. Thank you.
Thanks for the positive feedback, I appreciate it. Glad to hear that you found it useful 🙂👍
I’ve watched a lot of these type videos and have to say yours is the easiest to follow. One thing is the progression from a beginning knot and adding to that. Secondly, the white rope around a black bar offers great contrast and it’s easy to see what is happening.
Thanks a million for the great feedback, I really appreciate it. I'm new to this and just trying to share knowledge 🙂
Great video and well demonstrated thanks
Thanks a million for the feedback. I'm still learning this UA-cam stuff.
RIP
Thank you very much, very clear and un-intimidating tutorial!
You are very welcome. Thank you for the kind feedback 🙂
Sheetbend is the most useful knot.....and the simple simon under
Very easy and very useful, a great knot to know 👍
Hey Brother, Enjoy the video and looking forward to increasing my knowledge of all the various knots that are available that are known to be useful for something at anyone given time. You know your channel is really doing great when all the crazies try to use it to draw a little attention to their pathetic and miserable existence. BTW: What is Silgo near? GOD Bless 📖🛐✈️
Hey Chuck, thanks for the kind comment. I'm new to all this but hope I can make content that people find useful. 👍 Sligo is in the north west of Ireland...about 2.5hrs NW of Dublin. 🙂
I really like that quick release constrictor! Thank you.
Glad you got something from it. Thanks for the feedback 👍🙂
Can't thank you enough for such a great tutorial. Not only does this give you a good knowledge to secure things; you can have fun doing this and it's very relaxing. Please keep uploading your videos. 📖🛐👍
Thank you very much! That really means a lot. This was my first ever tutorial so I am still figuring out how to do all this! Have fun learning. I find it really relaxing too 🙂
Pull it true?
Through. Excuse the Irish accent ;)
One knot (not covered in the video) replaces these three knots and most other knots: The Bowline knot. If you know the Bowline knot, then you don't need to know these 3 knots nor many other knots. Another knot to know is the "Truckie's Hitch" because it can provide tension, which the Bowline Knot does not. For example, you tie a Bowline Knot on one end and use the Truckie's Hitch on the other end to have a taut line. The third (and final knot you'll ever need) is (I believe it's called) the "Constrictor Knot". You tie the Bowline knot to an animal's leg (e.g. pig, horse, etc.), the animal will most likely get loose because the Bowline knot does not "constrict" the leg. Those are the only knots you'll ever need (3 of them). No need to learn any others.
Thanks for the feedback. I was specifically focusing on joining ropes in this video. I covered the constrictor in another video. I planned to do separate videos on the bowline knot and the trucker hitch, they warrant videos of their own imo. 👍🙂
@@EMKayaking : I'm glad you agree there's only 3 knots people should know. Every other knot is just useless when you know the 3 knots I mentioned.
I'm not agreeing that there's only 3 knots ppl should know, but that those particular 3 are important to know 😉 Every knot has its use.
@@EMKayaking : Sorry, but I STRONGLY disagree. Unless you can provide proof that any other knot provides better "whatever" than the 3 knots then I stand by what I said (The 3 knots I mentioned is all people need to learn).
@@machonsote918 you are certainly entitled to your opinion and are free to disagree. I welcome all input 👍🙂
You tied a thieves knot, a square knot, a surgeon's knot, a sheets bend, and a zeppelin knot.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm working on an update!! 🙂
The knot using your first method is not a Reef Knot, but a Thief Knot. The working ends should be on the same side when done (as illustrated in your second method).
Moro Tommi. Thank you for the feedback. Having looked into it more I can see the difference between Reef knot and Thief knot, many sources don't pick up on this difference. I will include this when I do an updated video (I omitted important information on the sheet bend also so need to do an update).
Correct!
