It's the most wonderful time of year again when I break into the Holiday Meta Theories! Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus! No, H3H3, Pewdiepie, Markiplier, and Jacksepticeye, UA-cam isn't killing your channels. At least not on purpose. What they ARE doing is trying to become less like UA-cam and more like TV, which means that what UA-cam cares about it is changing. What IS really killing channels? OMG THE ALGORITHMS CHANGED AGAIN, I watched this vid just over 2 years ago and when I searched “hunger games” I got the same results you predicted. I decided to do this again a year later to see if it still worked... there was absolutely nothing about Minecraft. That new algorithm is promoting exactly what we never wanted to be promoted. Seriously: One 30+ minute video a day is waaay to much! For me as a tiny gaming channel uploading 3 10-15 minutes videos a week it is so unfair! And I don't want to be speaking just for myself but for all these sincere non-clickbait small channels: We do not have the time to make long videos every single day. We simply cannot. If you have other things to do besides UA-cam, you won't be able to become big on that platform anymore. Atm we might have channels created by normal people who suddenly became big but with that algorithm it will be nearly impossible in the future...

When I looked up Frozen and Hunger Games, I got a few of your theories near the top of the list.
Wow this is one of the most educational video's that I have seen on here concerning UA-cam, and educational overall considering how the information and research can be used (especially if you focus on how this information is synthesized, it really presents an ideal way to do research and draw conclusions).
These video's are really good at showing the mechanics behind their theories and explaining the relationships of their subjects, I specifically find these one's that touch upon the workings of the film and gaming industry's the most interesting because they explain things that are not common knowledge and otherwise would only learn from experience and not from school.
So basically UA-cam is trying to move away from UA-camr content creation, to company content creation as they want to move more towards something like netflix, leaving what UA-cam once was, to a typical corporate snooze fest?

Seeing our channel in the middle of the video was quite the surprise! Very cool of you to share these insights with everyone. In our six years here it's certainly been a bit of a roller coaster as the algorithm has gone through changes. I can only imagine how many factors the YT team has to consider. It's a good reminder to simply pursue what you love and give the best effort you can. Trying to ride a trend might work in the short term, but the world invariably moves on to something new.
It's good to see big channels getting involved with other videos and being an active part of the community

This kind of thing is only preventable by going against the system and watching your favorite youtuber's videos multiple times in order to increase total view time like he said they want.

Well I don't mind big companies like Nintendo, Sony, etc. coming to UA-cam to promote their games and stuff, that makes sense, a lot of people use the site so that to me is passable. The funny part is, I only got a few MC videos, mostly trailers for all different movies, Mats own Thery of the hunger games, too.

nah thats just part of it most youtubers have now gone into into this "ClickBait" bandwagon effect you can upload the most random crap and walk away with views just b/c of the overly hyped title. It makes other youtubers that actually upload content the traditional way with factual stuff demoralized with less viewers. Big youtubers are the least likely to be affected by this. I'm just not buying all this crap about Pewdiepie loosing his channel its just ClickBaiting at best
busi magen Not if they are already have a big channel at that point they pretty much build a fanbase off it they are just taking an advantage over click baiting. Like the guy who claimed to have a Nintendo Switch. That little stunt went viral just about every vlogger was talking about it even tho it was fake. It's not just the title it could be misleading thumbnails or only partially talk about what their title states.
Views count towards monetization with the help of ads. Bounces may occur, but the fact remains... they are still making money in a cheap way and try to be enthusiastic behind it. Click bating/Content leaks is a trend in today's time maybe not in the music, or review genres of youtbe, but its everywhere on the gaming, movie side. I had to unsub 7 ppl b/c I grew tired of it. When I see videos like Pewdiepie gonna delete his channel 1st thing that comes to mind is that is complete BS. This guy is making thousands of dollars every month probably even more its crap like that big youtubers can get away with in terms of click baiting. Would you cut off your thousand dollar investment after achieving 50 million subs?
Remember when UA-cam was a hobby and not a job? Remember when you had customization on your channel (full custom background, color, font, transparency)? THAT was my UA-cam, the Trutube.

you do realize it's the money that allows people like matpat to do this full-time right? Like the only reason many creators can invest so much time into this Hobby is because the money makes it so they don't have to get a job somwhere else . I doubt matpat would be putting out such hevily edited videos if he wasn't getting paid.
Civil Car Back before you could make money on YT... many people(especially from the OG PC days...) were just fine seeing a new upload once a week or so. This was a website made for SHARING content, a community.
Not to give people jobs. So I , nor others wouldnt have even met those people you mention, we wouldve simple been satisfied with how YT was.

It's greatest strength was that it allowed people a platform to be themselves and make money so of course the next logical step of action is to develop a system to where only mainstream networks make money and compete.
Yep, which is stupid because the big companies already had access to youtube. What gets youtube money is views to sell adspace and data. What gets those views is good content. What gets youtube the best content is giving as open of a platform as possible for the most people to be able to compete with the giants on a level playing ground.
This will only result in a decline in youtube's traffic as they lower the bar by making the conditions preferable to giants who release inferior content.
Just like when we could have went with Tesla's concept for energy but instead went with Edison. Building Tesla coils and proposing free energy doesn't help big companies profit from the 99%

Watching youtube everyday and don't freakin care about about big companies with thousand employees. UA-cam forgot who's watching videos. We don't come here to just look at annoying vids. We come here to watch people we like to watch. Want to remove what we like and kill the channels we follow? Go ahead, and when you will be as deserted as older video platforms, don't come crying to us. UA-cam was great BEFORE.

JTEgaming yep it's nearly impossible to get big now, it's been that way for a few years. Unless you have a really cool and unique idea that someone *has never done before* it's nearly impossible.
one word: clickbait
Make a company, basically you need way more then one person for your channel to be successful, because one person trying to put out the amount of content required to stay retentive is nearly impossible. My channel isn't monetized and I only put out videos when it's what I want to do, I'm not looking to make money or get popular I just want to share my fun with others when I have it. That's one of the ways you got to approach making content, do you want to make money or have fun, or make a lot less money and have fun.
I've had my channel for a while now and my videos are decent quality too. But i'll never blow up because it's just me, in college and no time to create a ton of content to keep up with demand. I'll probably never be super big but that's okay. I record game play with my best friends because we're hilarious! I edit because I find video editing fun (Except for editing my own voice *Eww*). I upload to UA-cam (a magical place that I spend a lot of my life) because I hope for people to watch my content and maybe get some giggles out of it. I don't care if I become huge. Would I like it? The popular channels weren't popular just by doing videos and simply waiting the money to come, they did what they wanted to do when they noted it wasn't already on UA-cam.
Else you are a professional and doing many advertising through your network of relations or your money, else you will need to be lucky ;)

It sounds doable but you'd have to be really creative and cut back on editing at the same time to make entertaining content. Say goodbye to everything that's even remotely educational, allot of quality content takes time to produce and it's just nice and organic. How many people can work with these constraints?

You are right. That is what is want to do, yet it want to give power to the creators as well. That is why there is a button called "Donate to this Channel". I believe the best way to promote the creators we like is to click that button or go to "Patron" where one donate money for them to continue what they like.

Your findings line up with mine nearly perfectly; Audience Retention is far less important than Total Minutes Watched, likes and comments do very little, and not making daily long form content makes growing much more difficult. What I would add into this is UA-cam's push for Total Session Watch Time which is resulting in an explosion of children's content as well as the Click through rate receiving increased importance. I loved your analogy of the treadmill continuing to increase in speed.
