So funny Amber said “he’s so funky.” This song is widely considered the very first Funk song. The man literally invented the genre! This is 1965. No one had done a song that sounded like this! 🔥

I got to see James Brown live a few years before he passed away... He didn't seem well, pissed off and left the stage, so his backup singer pretty much completed his whole set. She could sing, was about 10-20 years younger, but wasn't well either. I was bummed about the show, not because I didn't feel like I got what I paid for, but because it was the last impression I have of him. It was such a strong one that I have a difficult time hearing his music now without thinking of that show. With all that said... pick an older live show edited for TV. That's how he should be remembered.

An expression from that era .... people would ask you "what's your bag, man?" Meaning what do you like or what do you do? or if there's a situation, it could mean "what's your problem?" so Papa's got a brand new bag, a new interest, a new dance, a new something. Again, great choice!! The Mashed Potato is a dance. From way back in the early 60's.

James Brown almost created the funky sound. He is legendary. There is a concert film called The T.A.M.I./T.N.T. show that is a bunch of artists performing in this special concert. You should watch James Brown's full performance (I think it's 3 songs). He is so exciting to watch, and he is the second to last performer in the concert. The Rolling Stones were the final act. It is a known fact that Mick Jagger was offstage watching James Brown and started sweating bullets because he had to follow that.. The Stones performance is one that shows Jagger trying to dance like James Brown. Brown was a harsh leader of his band. If you saw him live and he turned toward a band member and he sang something like "I caught you" that was him telling the band member that he heard that person play the wrong note and that meant that person would get fined for the mistake.

James Brown used to live in Beech Island, SC, and my husband worked at his house under a subcontractor. James was building a room in his house called "The Octagon Room." As described, each one of the eight walls was going to have a huge Plasma TV screen. It was almost done, and when James got home off of his tour, he didn't like it, and pulled every one of the TV's down (that was a lot of money down the drain). Anyway, my husband was on call to his house if James had trouble with any of the electronics in his house. One Saturday, the gate guard called my husband to come and fix a TV. I rode with him, the guard let us in, and when we rode up to the house I was shocked. He had a 10-car garage, and when we pulled up in front of his house, in front of us was a Rolls-Royce that was next to a Bentley, and a Mercedes was next to us. There were some calls in the middle of the night for things like basically he didn't know how to work the remote control...but a nice man! He left us tickets to one of his local concerts in Augusta, GA, at the guard shack for coming out in the middle of the night :)

Saw him live at Glastonbury, easily the tightest, most in each others pockets band I have ever seen. The whole performance was literally faultless.
He did the whole show, the first ten minutes was the band vamping on a riff, while an mc whipped up the crowd before JB's arrival on stage. At the end he did the cloak thing three or four times. Magical!

Yes, the Mashed Potato was a dance move popularized by The Contours "Do You Love Me" in 1962. You've probably seen it done many times without knowing it. "(Do the) Mashed Potatoes" was a James Brown single in 1959 released under the name "Nat Kendrick and the Swans". Dee Dee Sharp dropped "Mashed Potato Time" in 1962. James Brown also dropped "Mashed Potatoes U.S.A." in 1962. The move was also named dropped in "Land of a Thousand Dances" by Wilson Pickett, "Having a Party" by Sam Cooke, "Shake a Tail Feather" by Ray Charles, and "Wah Watusi" by The Orlons among others.

My buddy and I were dating 2 Augusta college girls when we went to what we thought was a concert of Percy Sledge, the man who sang "When a Man Loves a Woman". Well it wasn't Percy Sledge, it was James Brown. If you want to get into another bit of opera you have to try Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballe - Barcelona. Freddie wrote this for Montserrat as he was a massive fan of hers after seeing her perform. You won’t be disappointed. Maybe female Friday? X

During what they call “The British Invasion” ‘64 all these Brits were taking over the Charts. Beatles, Stones, Chad & Jeremy, Gerry & Pacemakers, Petula Clark, etc. etc. The only 2 Americans they couldn’t take off the Charts were James Brown & Elvis. JB has some of the Tightest Horns in the Business, they are called “The Fabulous Flames”. If you want 20 minutes of total Funk try “Doing it to Death” by The JB’s (James Brown Band)….one of my all time favorites of his is “There Was a Time”, get the Video where he shows you The Mash Potatoes, The Camel Walk, and a couple more dances ….SanJoseBob

Okay as I thought the first few comments that I've already looked at our saying just what I was going to say you must see James Brown perform live and dance!! The man probably lost at least 10 lbs per performance just from perspiration!! Absolutely earned the title of Godfather of Soul and while we're at it for Amber, The Godfather of Funk!!

Another early Rock n roll black artist is Jackie Wilson. You need to see his live performance of Lonely Tear Drops from 1960!! Its great!!! And his Baby Work Out live in 1965 on Shindig. He may be the smoothest person ever!!

'I Feel Good'. Like others said, live is 'Out of Sight'. 'Night Train', 'Please, Please, Please'. Out of Sight on the TAMI Show...fun, fun, fun. I think he does 3 numbers on the show...must see. Yall should watch that whole program...so many performers, Brown, The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Smoky Robinson, The Supremes, I believe Marvin Gaye, Chuck Berry, more. You get a bunch of 60's performers, a straight mix of black and white performers. As for opera, The Three Tenors...which are Pavarotti, Domingo, and Carreras.

Mashed potato is a dance move, yes! But he also mentions the Jerk, the monkey, the alligator, the fly, the jump back jack, and the twist. All moves you and your girls would have a lot of fun looking up and learning!

Godfather! You have to see him work. No frills band - just pure funk! Have a collection of James Brown 45's still love to play. Sex Machine, The Payback, Papa Don't take no Mess, Get on the Good Foot, Cold Sweat, Super Bad, Living in America. James Brown has probably influenced every singer and/or dancer that there is!

You can see him as a preacher in the film "The Blues Brothers" singing a number along with loads of old stars. Also you can see during the Ray Charles number, dancers doing all the old 60's dance craze like the mashed potato, the monkey, the fly and others.

I gotta tell you when I was young I would go to bed with a radio on. When this song came on I would jump out of bed and do my best james brown dance. Love him! Hardest working man in show biz. Watch him dance. When he slides his feet back and forth. That's the mashed potato.

First time I heard the King of funk and soul, Mr. James Brown, I was about 14 years old. It was on a artist compilation put out by a local radio station (KGB 30 Boss Hits). I was enthralled.
