Great reaction! James had one of the most iconic bass players in history, Bootsy Collins, and his brother Catfish playing guitar! Bootsy signed with James when he was 18 and Bootsy went on to play with George Clinton in P Funk and did a ton of studio work including Dee-Lite’s Groove Is In The Heart you guys reacted to. You guys should definitely react to some Sly and The Family Stone! Sly Stone was the Prince of the 70’s. He wrote the songs, played all the instruments, mixed everything, between James, Sly and George they basically invented funk!

Totally agree about Sly and the Family Stone. On this channel I've pushed them to react to "Everyday People," which to me, is one of the most perfect pop songs ever recorded. It has a message we all need to hear without ever being preachy. It is just so catchy and infectious. If anything, the biggest criticism you can make of that song is that it is too short, just under 2.5 minutes.

J.B.'s other nickname was "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business." His work ethic in the music business was legendary. He practiced his band until they were razor sharp. They performed hundreds of concerts every year. Brown had memorized the names of most of the best-known venue operators and influential DJs east of the Mississippi; if a performance fell through in a certain city, he could usually line up a replacement concert venue within hours. He was one of the most influential artists of his time.

"Sex Machine" has been called the foundation of house music (that piano!). That "cosigner" is his old friend Bobby Byrd, who actually introduced James Brown to *his* (Bobby's) group the Flames. James took over, the band became the *Famous* Flames, and the rest is history. Bootsy Collins, his brother Catfish, and their friend and future Spinners lead singer Philippe Wynne backed him on this as part of James' backing band The JBs. You should check them out ("Doin' It to Death," "More Peas," "You Can Have Watergate [Just Gimme Some Bucks and I'll Be Straight]" -- honestly it's all James Brown 😄). My personal favorite? The most sampled track in history -- "Funky Drummer." It's a shame it took *so* many years for the Funky Drummer himself, Clyde Stubblefield, to get his due.

I've seen him live in concert at least 10 times and never wanted to leave the concert when it was over. I was always so pumped up. The best place that I witnessed his power and genius was at The Parkwest venue in Chicago back in the early 80s. I literally sat through two full concerts in a row. God bless his soul. RIP JB. James Brown led one of the tightest bands in popular music for years, especially with the unstoppable rhythm section of Bootsy Collins and Jabo Starks, the guitar scratches of Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley leading the horn section.
Presumably, all of Brown's dance moves were a way of "orchestrating" the band; that's how they seem to shift gears so seamlessly without any apparent direction from him.

This song sends chills down my spine in the first bars. Saw him in the early 70s at the Apollo in Hammersmith, that night everyone was up that night was electric. His dance routines was something else. Listen to it’s a Man’s World. One of the best concerts I have ever attended. God Father of Soul, he paved the way for so many artists both in rhythm and dance. Happy that I was there at the beginning.

Saw James Brown in the legendary Channel in Boston in the mid-80s... on the rundown wharf, smoky, sweaty, low-ceilinged, one floor, no seats, place was packed and rockin! One of the best shows I've ever seen... and I've seen many. Will never forget it. RIP JB and The Channel

Some years ago, I bought the James Brown box set on CD. To be honest, there wasn't a whole lot of variety among the tracks, but really, you don't go to JB for variety -- you go to him for SIZZLE... and there was plenty of that!

Thank you for reacting to James Brown. His music was mentioned in one of my favourite Australian movies, "The Sapphires", but although I know he was a famous musician I have never been fortunate to see film of him singing before. It is fantastic that you show such a wide range of music. Thanks again.

    EPIC chair-dancing, you two!
An essential album is James Brown's "20 All-Time Greatest Hits!" and you can't go wrong picking any of those songs for this channel. Although I prefer James Brown's funky side, if you want to hear a different side (ballads) there are two from that album I can recommend: "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" and "Please Please Please." His vocal prowess can get lost in a song like "Sex Machine," but in the ballads you can hear that this man can SANG.
I read once that James Brown's great gift was being a band leader. He's up on stage leading the entire ensemble. They are following him note for note. When he asks the band if he can "hit it and quit," or to move on to the bridge, that's not a lyric. That's him leading the band. He does that a few times in this one song, and once you know to listen for it, you hear him in this role in quite a lot of his songs.

James Brown was the greatest performer ever! I never got the chance to see him myself before he passed, but my dad went to a show of his back in the 80's, and to this day he raves about how it was the best damn concert he's ever been to lol. Everyone from Michael Jackson to Prince to tons of other funk, soul, pop, and hip-hop acts were all hugely influenced by him. James is probably the single most sampled artist in hip-hop besides maybe George Clinton and P-Funk. Next up from JB, you guys gotta do "The Payback", that song goes EXTRA hard! "I don't know karate, but I know ka-razy!" lmao.
Fun fact: During a televised concert in the 60's called the TAMI show, they were trying to decide who the final act of the night was going to be and it came down to either James Brown or The Rolling Stones. They decided to let the Stones decide if they wanted to go last after JB or just before him. They opted to go after him. To this day Mick Jagger says it was the biggest mistake they ever made, because JB's performance completely blew them out of the water, and their performance seemed anti-climactic as hell coming right after lol. You know this man was a SERIOUS entertainer if he could make the Stones look weak in comparison!

Awesome to see you two react to this one! I officially became a fan of this song in June/July 2000, when I was 15. I had heard it in the 90s, I believe, though.
Anyway, at the end of June 2000(one week after the end of my freshman year of high school), one day my dad took me and my younger brother over to Best Buy. He copped the 'James Brown- 20 All Time Greatest Hits' album, and played it daily.
'Sex Machine' was on there, and I got to hear it pretty daily for the next week or so!

James was a freestyle singer. I don't think he ever wrote down a lyric. He just sang what he felt. The JB's were probably the best backing band EVER. They were so tight. Fred Wesley on trombone and Maceo Parker could play any woodwind instrument even Bootsy Collins was his bass player for a while.
"Introduction of the JB's/Doin It To Death" is a must listen. It's a bit long but after listening you'll truly appreciate them!
