Yes, this is a young James Brown. 25 years old when this was released. It was his first song to hit the Hot 100. I love this song. When I was 12 and started going to a local dance that was held every Saturday they were still playing this song, even though it was about a year old by then. And when they didn't play it, I requested it!
James Brown "Please, Please, Please" - LIVE AT THE TAMI SHOW VERSION. It's a slower song, and a top 5 live performance of any artist ever. That man puts on a show!! It would put a big smile on my face to see y'all enjoy this classic
@@eddiekertel8919 That concert is historic! It was like an indoor Woodstock of the early 60s with so many performers. Mick Jager and The Rolling Stones who folowed JB did not want to perform (although they did) because JB was on fire!
I love James Brown and this is one of my favorite songs by him. Brings back great memories! Great song to slow dance by. Thank you for playin it. The song came out in 1958 and was written by James Brown. He was around 25 years of age when he wrote it.
When I hear James Brown, I think of, besides his huge personality and of the incredible artist and entertainer he was, is how grieved he was by Elvis's death. He spent hours at Graceland sitting at Elvis's casket. He was so grieved, he had to be helped out. He loved Elvis, the man not just the singer.
This was originally recorded in 1958 when James Brown was 25 years old. "Try Me", titled "Try Me (I Need You)" in its original release, is a song recorded by James Brown and The Famous Flames in 1958. It was a #1 R&B hit and charted #48 Pop - the group's first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] It was Brown and the Flames' second charting single, ending a two-year dry spell after the success of "Please, Please, Please".
I was 21 yrs old in 1958 and at the time in the Army. I was in Georgia for Commo school and a few of us went to Savannah Ga and watched him in Concert. Great performance
Oh my!! Yes, believe it is an earlier one. Yearning quality is up front in his voice. 1958 Tune! The horn arrangement definitely is also. Almost Acker Bilk style! James did this song with the Famous Flames. Now, there's a live version from 1986. The man knew how to sweat! Oh the vocals!! Yes, 1958 voice, Jay. "Please, Please, Please" on stage. Thanks. Great reaction.
Saw James Brown in concert 57 years ago!!! My date and I sit in the balcony of the public auditorium in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I was a freshman in college. It was awesome. Everyone there were having a great time; dancing in the aisles. Police weren't happy but no one cared. James Brown's performance was off the charts.
Wow! This was recorded in 1958! Honestly, I haven't heard this song before, but omg, I'm so thankful to you guys for choosing it. I LOVE everything about it. His voice, those lyrics, the tune, and oh those woodwind instruments (are they woodwind or brass ?) (clarinet/sax, I'm not sure which). Either way, I loved it. ❤❤🎵🎵🎷🎺
Everytime I hear Try me it's one of those songs, to me that bring me back, to when I first heard it in the San Gabriel Valley Baldwin Park Ca. I heard it 50 years ago and it feels like i'm hearing it for the first time eveytime I hear it, I had a 4 track tape player with James Brown's Night train, try me, prisoner of love and more all songs were sung by him in late 50s.
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "I Got You" or "Get Up Offa That Thing"!!! Gotta be live, even if you have to blur it! edit - Jay, you are correct,he was just 25 years old!! 1958, his second song to chart! His first hit "Please, Please, Please" was also slower but great vocals.

Nice choice of his early work. Long live the 50's. I was born in 1950 and grew up in this era and as I grew up and went through the 60's, 70's, 80's etc..as a musician I go back to the 50's to play on stage because it brings out your vocals the best.
It is a young James brown from 1958. This was his second massive hit after please, please, pleasefrom 1956. In another 6 - 7 years, he would begin to break away from this r'n'b sound and start perfecting what would become known as funk starting with I feel good and papa's got a brand new bag. He would perfect the funk sound with Cold Sweat in 1967.
Oh love this song! We had the 45 record when it first came out oh the parties I've seen with this song playing with these girls in their petticoat dresses I will never forget those memories. This is James brown from early days
James Brown did not do a lot of slow tunes but I loved “Kiss in 77, “Please, Please, Please,” “It’s a Man’s World”. I can’t think of any others. My sister was a teen in the 60s and she was a crazy fan. She took her “little sisters” to the Regal Theater in Chicago. JB was the headliner. He used to come off stage at the end and the girls would go nuts and get all over him. Sister left us snd rushed the stage; came back with part of his tie wrapped around her hand!!! I was probably 9 years old at the time..it was wild!!
I first heard this song back in the 90’s from a movie called Untamed Heart, even as an 11 year old I was IN LOVE with this song and the voice singing it. Still one of my favorite songs of all time, we actually had this song play at our wedding ❤
I only discovered this song about a year ago. So powerful singing to a lady for her to try him to accept his love. To except his wanting for her. So powerful.
One of my older brothers had the album James Brown Live at the Apollo, and I think this song was on it. If not, it was on another of his James Brown’s albums. I grew up listening to James Brown. Loved hearing this! Thank you for choosing this and for your reactions.
A listener mentioned the TAMI show from 1964. JB was the next to last performer on that show. He was sensational. The last act was The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger from the Stones said: How do we follow that? TAMI means Teenage Awards Music International. Great concert from that decade!
The horns was a blend of saxophone and trumpet. Quite common in the 50s. Later in the 60s the trumbone was added to bands for a 3 horn blend. Some would take the 3 and add a second sax, like Earth Wind and Fire 's Phoenix Horns
"Bewildered" was the flip side of this song. Late 50s maybe 1960. Back up vocals are Bobby Byrd and The Black Birds. They did a great single " In Rhythm" around 1973.
That's a *very* young James Brown, late 1950s, when he sang a lot of ballads. You need to check out "Bewildered," from the same era. This is a decade before I was born but I love me some James Brown ballads. About ten years later, Bob Marley did a soul-ish ballad called "Try Me," clearly influenced by this. (Bob loved American R&B.)
A little background on this. Well I’ve been a James Brown fan since I was 12 and 1968 he’s my all-time favorite singer and I have basically everything he ever recorded and saw him live about 100 times over 35 years. But anyway his first record was PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE in 1956. It went up the number six on the Soul charts and for the next two years he put out about 10 singles that basically flopped and he was given an ultimatum by Syd Nathan at King Records. He came up with TRY ME. Which went to number one on the Soul charts in number 48 on the pop charts and the rest is history. The background singers were the Famous Flames, actually he was part of the Famous Flames at the time. That was a great reaction I love that you guys love the song? A couple of suggestions please. LOST SOMEONE and BEWILDERED. If you do react to those make sure you get the original singles from the early 1960s.
Ballads like this were a huge part of the early James Brown discography. "Please Please Please", "Bewildered", and the scorching "I'll Go Crazy". His 1963 "Live At The Apollo" LP is a milestone recording well worth checking out.

James Brown the Godfather of Soul. Sam Cooke. Sam and Dave. Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett all soul music legends.
The Famous Flames 1958 when Mr. James Brown was with them.( founded in Toccoa, Georgia, in 1953 by Bobby Byrd. James Brown first began his career as a member of the Famous Flames, emerging as the lead singer)
This song was recorded in late-1958. On this record, and many other, James Brown sang with The Famous Flames. The song was released on the Federal Records label. According to Wikipedia, "Try Me" went to "Number One" on the Billboard R & B Chart, and was their first "Top 50" hit on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart. The single sold over one million copies in 1959. In the 1950s and early-1960s, James Brown was a much smoother singer, and did some stylistic experimentation on those James Brown And The Famous Flames records and albums. By the mid-1960s, James Brown And The Famous Flames evolved into a more soulful sound on records, in order to compete with the Stax/Volt Records success during that time period. He and his group and orchestra traveled all over the United States, from coast to coast, developing word of mouth amongst the Rock music fans, and building up goodwill with regional promoters and radio stations. He proved to them that he and his group and orchestra could make them money. By the mid-1960s, James Brown And The Famous Flames began to make music industry insiders take notice, as he was increasingly being booked for TV performances on regional Rock music programs that appealed to white audiences. Brown hit the big time when he was booked for a series of TV performances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on CBS. I remember watching a TV performance by James Brown And The Famous Flames on "The Ed Sullivan Show" here on UA-cam, and Ed Sullivan made it known to the audience and viewers at home, that James Brown was a very important music artist in the music industry, and was respected for his songwriting, and his appeal to wide varieties of music audiences of that time.
Appreciate you take the time, I realize it's lot, to go thru your comments..love you give the people what they want, rather than tell us how busy you are and how man requests you receive. We know that's true. Other reactors ignore our requests for months and tell us they are busy. Thank you. We know you're busy cause you got lives and kids! But we love how much you try and remind us it's all due to our requests.
GODFATHER OF SOUL!! Please check out his 80's hit "Living In America" it is a fantastic, albeit cheesy song! It was also featured in "Rocky IV" - which you guys should check out the "Rocky" movies! I'd also suggest "Cupid" by Sam Cooke. Also check out Solomon Burke, Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway. Keep Smiling! :)
They need to hear this if for no other reason than they can then listen to Weird Al's "Livin with a Hernia" where Al even gets to use James' band in the video.
James Brown was an awesome entertainer. You might like "Jones, Oh, Jones" by Blind Blake Higgs. I think he first sang it in the 1950s in The Bahamas :)
Love this song. James sings with so much feeling, heart and soul. Those elements are missing in much of today's music. I'd love to slow dance to this song.
I love this song. It's been on my continual playlist since I first heard it in the movie Untamed Heart (Christian Slater and Marrisa Tomei romantic film.).
You guys should just do a reaction to James Brown's entire performance from the TAMI show in 1964 (even if you have to blur the video). It would have to be a longer reaction since it's around 18 mins or so, but definitely worth it if you want to see what an amazing performer he was. If you only do a portion of it though, I would highly recommend his performance of "Night Train"
I remember seeing James Brown live at my university sometime in The '80s. Though he may have been a little bit past his peak, he was a POWERFUL performer still, and he rocked that little theater with so much soul! I like the way you guys react to music of all kinds. A little more tolerant than I am, as I'm a bit of a music snob. Anyway, allow me to suggest some stuff (and excuse my assumption that these are new to you, as maybe you're familiar with them all). Joan Armatrading "The Weakness in Me," "To the Limit" Joni Mitchell (anything and everything, really, but especially) "Black Crow" Patti Smith "Because the Night" Sinead O'Connor "Mandinka" Roxy Music "The Thrill of It All" Ian Hunter "When the World Was Round" Richard & Linda Thompson "Walking On a Wire" Prince "When You Were Mine" Peter Gabriel "Here Comes the Flood" Talking Heads "Life During Wartime" Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks "Insider" Rickie Lee Jones "We Belong Together, " "Chuck E.'s in Love," "Rainbow Sleeves" (a Tom Waits cover), and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" (another cover) Bonnie Raitt "Angel From Montgomery," Graham Parker "Local Girls" Anyway...keep doing what you're doing. Keep raising a beautiful family.
I met James in NC where he was to play at the National Guard armory.

I said no problem , jumped in my 1954 Chevy and escorted him over .

James Brown is the Godfather of Funk and the back of Hip Hop
Trumpets AND saxophones! 😉 👍
Gonna have a funky good time. It’s a must!!
This is legit one of my favorite songs
This was early in his “Famous Flames” era. James Brown was an amazingly versatile artist who inspired so many of our modern artists though
Rolling Stones review of the James Brown box set . " this can not be over estimated in impact and value'.
I love this slow song by James Brown! Also check out Papa Don't Take Know Mess!
Garnett mimms - "for your precious love", Charles and Eddie - "would I lie to you", chi-lites - "oh girl"
The Godfather of Soul...Soul Brother #1!
Yes it’s a very young James brown early in his career. One of his first hits.
James Brown was an awesome entertainer. You might like "Jones, Oh, Jones" by Blind Blake Higgs. I think he first sang it in the 1950s in The Bahamas :)
Living in America is a great song as well performed by James for the Rocky IV movie
This song was recorded in 1958, nearing the end of the Doo-wop period, hence the sound and rhythm of this piece.
That's what I was thinking about when I saw this reaction. Untamed Heart always comes to mind when I hear this song. Love that movie!! 🥰
Love James and that he and Elvis were so close. Please, Please, Please. , Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, I feel good are some of my favorites by him
Suggest you check out the James Brown performance of Please Please Please on TAMI for a real example of what a showman he truly was.
This one is Very Nice! I also like 'Livin' In The USA', among many others. :) Great One Guys!
James Brown and The Fabulous Flames 🙏
Joan Armatrading "The Weakness in Me," "To the Limit" Joni Mitchell (anything and everything, really, but especially) "Black Crow" Patti Smith "Because the Night"
Sinead O'Connor "Mandinka" Roxy Music "The Thrill of It All" Ian Hunter "When the World Was Round" Richard & Linda Thompson "Walking On a Wire"
Prince "When You Were Mine" Peter Gabriel "Here Comes the Flood" Talking Heads "Life During Wartime" Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks "Insider"
Rickie Lee Jones "We Belong Together, " "Chuck E.'s in Love," "Rainbow Sleeves" (a Tom Waits cover), and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" (another cover)
Bonnie Raitt "Angel From Montgomery," Graham Parker "Local Girls"
Anyway...keep doing what you're doing. Keep raising a beautiful family.
