- Dr. Jordan B. Peterson discusses the impact of adopting opinions and thoughts from others. He explores the idea that much of what we think and say are actually the ideas and perspectives of other people. While this can be beneficial in some ways, it also poses a disadvantage as it may not truly reflect our authentic selves. To be authentic and honest is truly the core of what we are. To live our “Own” truth is difficult, yet attainable. I think Dr.Peterson is pulling humanity to be the best they can be. Awesome conversation ❤
Totaly, thas is why it's imporant that if trans/gay and other people (who we may not like) feel authentic in their being, we should respect them, and not try to judge them or change them. Am I right?
@@KyleCox404 It’s not so much trying to change them as what they are pushing to change. Compelled language. Forced compliance to a faulty ideology. Taking over women’s sports and spaces. Erasing woman as a biologically meaningful entity. Dress how you want, love who you want. But don’t expect sensible people to buy into that belief system.
Also, there’s a difference between being authentic and living your “own truth.” Infinite truths make a disorganized, disconnected and narcissistic world.
There isn't a such thing as "own" truth. There is truth then falsities. Now if you want to talk about how you manifest your personality, then we are on to something

@@RobertButler1 well.. and id say discipline. The man's a philosopher, so, the myth goes: these folks practice what they preach. And also he says his diet consists of like beef and salt. And water. And he doesn't speak of it fondly in a sense. But he's lost weight because of that, and is living right and doing good by people and THAT will make you glow (your conscience being clean as possible). And then the beard. Sometimes.

This is the Peterson I think we all came to admire, the Peterson who took complex intellectual ideas and broke them down to demonstrate the pathway to which he learned the idea himself, he had a very good way of speaking to younger generations in layman terms to create better individual thinking, fame and recognition and most importantly opposition sharpened the Peterson we see today, the help and guidance he provides now caters to the style of his people and not to all as it once did. I’m still a huge fan but I enjoy these much more.
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if what he has become now is a new authentic self or is he hiding or using words of the people that surround him now .
@@hanaahanafi532 I think he’s operating at a different level to most people, he probably has everything in check from the individual level to familial to friendships he’s doing well financially so now he’s just changing cultural narratives in the way he does best, he knows stories work well and he wants us all onboard with his story as he takes on the opposing culture, i back him a lot but I see a loss of education to people on the outside who now just see Peterson as a political or cultural leader.
@@tommyjones7275 he sees himself as a political/cultural leader, that's why I said is this new identity authentic? given the limiting time he had and considering the circumstances in which he was forced to have a new identity (he's not a professor anymore) can that be an authentic transformation? He said in the video he released titled "an apologia" that political figures from the republican party reached out to him and told him that they don't need a new republican so he didn't really identify which role he's playing now.
@@hanaahanafi532 yes i guess that’s a great question then, but I still think he believes it’s authentic because of his own narrative and perspective that he’s struggling against the bad in the world even if people who are doing “the same” don’t let him in their group. I think he likes being on his own against the world as it gives him existential meaning, makes him believe he is the Solzhenitsyn of our time and tbf to him and the intellectual dark web they just might be.

The greatest professor I've ever known did me the enormous service of brutalizing my early essays in 2nd year university, by scrawling "POLEMIC!!" everywhere I was making an emotive rather than a substantive argument. It took me a couple of years but it fixed my writing style. 40 years later I'm still not so arrogant as to believe that I'm capable of pure objectivity in analytical writing, but I still remember that scrawled accusation, and it forces me to think about every word I use. It’s a very interesting lesson. We should think ourselves and find solution of our problems by own-self. We are relying to much on other’s wisdom which are destroying our thinking and creativity capabilities.❤

No joke, every time i listen to jordan peterson speak i get that "oooh" feeling. Every time this man manages to say something innovative and meaningful that hits me deep. Makes you realise a lot of things.
We assimilate and integrate all thing's that falls in our morality standards to fortify our belief and show our presence to the world as loud as we can advertising ourselves on what we can offer to the world to gain favors and opportunities that otherwise is hard to come by. Like a sharp sword we are in constant struggles on refining ourselves to be authentic as much as we can to the image we struggle to attain.

This is especially true with small children. My mother was a pre-k teacher. They often would tell the parents that a well behaved child was able to learn more than a child that entered pre-k knowing alot already. The well behaved child could use self control and be able to sit still, not interrupt, & pay attention. They learned at a much faster rate & would often outpace the kids that came in already knowing ABCs or how to count. Have you ever tried to teach something to someone that just will not focus....? absolute nightmare.
Thank you, Dr. Peterson, for addressing my personal situation. I pray that I can continue to remember just to be myself as authentically as possible. I am good enough as I am without puffery.😊

There's a reason most people just parrot what they hear from the status quo. It's really difficult to actually conceive an original thought. And people also have a tendency to suppress their true feelings if they fear potential negative backlash. People warp themselves into all sorts of different personas depending on the situation or person they're speaking to.
It might be difficult to conceive an original thought. But it's not as difficult to conceive an authentic one. You can say what others say in a way that's fake, and you can say what others say in a way that's real to you. And part of that is seeing if you even believe it, but part of it is figuring out how to express it.
My Sunday school teacher used to say,
If someone offends you,

I tried being my authentic self and ended up a loner😅 not that I was being a jackass, I just couldn't find anyone else who shares my interests so I had to detach myself from people because I realized I was trying to imitate something that wasn't the real me just so I could be accepted into the small identity groups that constituted the society (I was in a high school boarding school). But occasionally I would engage with a few on my interests. Comic books, astrophysics, gaming and Electronic Music
This is true for myself, as well. When I share my real views on things, it makes the others around me uncomfortable. I am not often surrounded by similar thinking. my husband & I have been in marriage counseling & often I feel like I can not even be my authentic self with the counselor (even tho she has helped us dramatically). I have come to the realization that I withhold my authentic self almost 100% of the time, and that the others around me misread me, my viewpoints, opinions, political & religious leanings etc... I have had people say some crazy sh*t to me in the past 2-3 years which has left me stunned that they can't figure out "who" I am. But this counselor has told me that I have such a reserved, guarded front that my persona is like a well fortified castle. But the problem is when I actually open myself up to others, my views are not popular or accepted. Society is a hard thing to operate in. My chickens & pigs are much easier company

@@pattyhansen7563 I can deeply relate on the 'being misunderstood' part. In some of the online groups I'm in I'm usually confronted by hostility. And when things get intense and the insults come and they start to reveal what they really think of me it just baffles me and it hurts a little that they would perceive me in that manner. Yet I always try to be as polite and articulate as possible. But I'm used to it now. Some of them are starting to get an understanding of how I view the universe. That's good enough for me. I hope you and your husband are in a much better place than you were before
@@MZRTMusic254 Yes, we are, thank you for your concern. In some instances I never bother to correct the person, because THEY have shown their true colors about how they feel about someone like me. its just that they never really know WHO I am. I have had that feeling of hurt & confusion, too. But it made sense when the therapist explained how my body language comes across. Its so weird, because these are people who actually know me in life & see how I live & I would think they could even jump to conclusions about me based on the way I live. Maybe others are not as intuitive as me?
One thing that started off teaching me to be authentic, is to not impose a level of threat either with words, or body language if I wasn’t really brave enough to follow through with what I was challenging with towards a situation, and take responsibility and be honest with myself for what I was actually willing to do to stick up for what I believe is right. Partial coward or over agreeableness when my stress threshold was reached? I think both but I learned that having people (and myself) end up seeing that I wasn’t authentic to stand up for myself through and through was way more steps back than I felt like I was taking forward. And yes this was passive aggressive behavior but I didn’t know better back then. When I realized where I was at with my beliefs, I stopped trying to brute force my way through discomfortable situations, and prioritized evaluation of the situation and my boundaries. Then once I had my beliefs locked in- in a more secure manner, it empowered me to deal with life more authentically because I wasn’t trying to pay with mental and emotional currency I didn’t have, I knew where I was at and represented myself accordingly to what I knew I would have the balls to back up. I had to learn to be willing to take 1000 steps back in life (and ego) in order to start taking my first true steps forward. I think authenticity is your confidence in value representation- you believe in what your representing, and you are familiar with the environment and nature of responsibility that comes with having to have a back bone to stand up for what you believe amidst varying mindsets, not that your even explaining yourself, you just learn to shine with the genuine joy of confidence, knowing that- though you may not have everything figured out, you still do the work to show up to life doing the best you can, and show the cards you hold as is.

Thank you so much for this. I feel like I'm somewhat 70% authentic, but the 30% makes me feel so uncomfortable. It's an awful and disgusting steroid that you swallow when you want some sort of external validation. I've been trying to stop doing it, exactly like how Doctor Peterson has proposed, but I think what I need is to spend more time studying and cookin my thoughts

Life is a continous death and (re)birth, but not so much death that we actually die. We know cells are dying everyday in our bodies, but others are being made (born) to replace the death ones.
So in order to live, we *must* know how to die* .
The unborn child is the potential that still awaits to be awaken consciously. But because we refuse to die, to burn all the deadwood, we didn't even started to be.

It’s hard for me to be authentic without being an asshole. I’m usually not even going out of my way to be, it’s just natural 😢
@@wnp67 I can be polite and have tact when I need to. It upsets me when I upset people, because most of the time I have a lot of compassion for most of them. When I feel the situation is serious and need to be real with someone, though, I’ll tend to say horrific things without much of a need to buffer it.
I value truth, and although I won’t go out of my way to hurt someone, I will absolutely inadvertently say something horrible if it’s what I think. Of course, I tell people to do the same with me. I would rather my feelings hurt then to be lied to. I hate dishonesty, especially for the sake of simply keeping the peace.
Dude I was just like you. It's a fucking tightrope walk trying to figure out how to be authentic and say what you mean while also saying it with tact.
The first thing is to understand that some people don't require your criticism so you can just detach yourself.
The second is that if you say it in a very tactful way that doesn't feel authentic, and you practice that, you get better at doing it authentically and tactfully. And also, saying it tactfully, if it gets them to listen, actually communicates your authentic message more.
Also try not to surround yourself with too many very agreeable people, have some tougher friends so you don't have to do it as much.
Other than that, just do the careful work of feeling out which words are authentic and tactful at the same time, and practice it. It'll take time but you'll improve.

I really miss this Peterson. I might be very wrong about what I’m about to say but this is how I feel. And I will try to be as truthful and not use the truth as a sword as much as I can. I aim this to be helpful to him and to me (since this is the first time I’m articulating these thoughts).
His atitude was so much more generous and humble.
He was subjected to so much anger and persecution his whole public behavior changed.
He was much more amicable, like a warm hearted professor who spoke some harsh truths to his students. Now most of the time I see him he seems just harsh, self-conscious (of his importance) and a bit self-indulgent.
For quite a while almost every time he speaks I feel uninterested although I might be very interested in the subject. The way he speaks now is filled with a quiet anger and overt contempt and he seems to have a sneer on his face when he speaks (sometimes more sometimes less but it’s always there).
When he talks to people in interviews or Exodus round table it gets better and almost disappears but when it’s a presentation, I feel very turn off by his demeanor.
He suffered so much I think his heart hardened quite a bit and he hasn’t dealt with all the situations he allowed to be put in (he was very brave but a soul can only take so much), I don’t think angry Peterson is the real Peterson. I think the above is, he is just going through a very hard phase and I pray he will go back to this but even better as a person.
His subliminal anger seems like post traumatic stress to me. Not a psychologist but that’s how I see it. His fight since late 2016 has been honorable but his personality has suffered and it is still absorbing the impact of all those lies and attacks. He is a gentle soul in my opinion and he will overcome this “demon” that has been inhabiting him. I hope I overcome mine too, we all have them albeit in different intensities. I think I can learn a lot from what has happened to Peterson. This bothers me so much for a reason that’s for sure.

I think you really hit the nail on the head here. I sense that too. When I went to see him lecture, he told a joke about a feminist that really made me uncomfortable. It seemed to disrespect the basic humanity of the person, regardless of how wrong she may have been about her assertions. It seems that being associated with some of the guys from the Daily Wire hasn't helped. Comedy is a fine line, of course. I hope he works through this and returns to his core as well.
His addiction has changed him no doubt, possibly becoming more bitter and cynical. As well as becoming well known. But he still has wisdom and says profound things.
Oh my god, I thought I was the only one who had this opinion! I agree with everything you said, and was surprised no one was expressing it. I too like pre-covid Peterson more. However, I have noticed in his most recent clips that he's toning down the snark a little, maybe less angry. To me there's 3 Dr Petersons. One is my spiritual guide who makes me understand religions and feel divine connections, the other is my self-help guru who makes me want to be a better person, and the third is a stern father who warns me about the perils of leftism. It's the last one that brings out the most anger in him.
He’s a Manifestor. Look it up. He isn’t here to be a people pleaser or to make things more palatable. He’s here to make an impact. If you’re repelled, he isn’t for you. That’s just facts.

It's interesting how this is a lot akin to what spiritual teachers like Eckhart Tolle talk about when it comes to breaking free of the egoic mind and identifying with the one who not only observes the mind but observes the observer of the mind, which according to them is the true self or one's soul, aka consciousness.

I might be just a sum of all the status quo that I consumed. no originality. no me. How do I tell the difference between my original thought vs the status quo that I just reiterate?

How are we to trust anyone to be a judge of who is, compared to who is not ... authentic?
I read an article that suggested, "To be a great leader, you need the right mindset."
That might be true ... but then who is going to qualify as a trustworthy judge concerning whether another person's mindset ... or even more important … whether one’s own mindset is "right?"
We have consciences and instincts like the instinct of awe, admiration, imitation, etc.
There's no rule-set or criteria about authenticity or leadership. You know it when you see it. And the more you try to pay attention, the better you get at seeing it.

dude that thing about the cliches i can relate sooo much, it's so boring that most people talk in cliches pretty much, like you read or hear a bit and know exactly where it's going and it doesn't surprise you at all, it's annoying, and school is a bit to blame because it teaches that copy paste way of operating
Ok this video is saying something very unusual for me. This 1 video, out of the 40+ 10 min clips and the 6 or so 2+ hr clips I've seen. I resonate with like 98% , but what struck me about this video is how little this situation applies to me... Shockingly so actually.
It's fantastic advice and perspective of course, but I have to wonder what the suggestion is for a person at the other end of this extreme... I mean to communicate what I believe when I say something, and what I believe is unique to my individuality, and I tend to have the overwhelming problem that cliche and well circulated ideas aren't very efficient for expressing it. Of course I feel like well circulated ideas are the building blocks I use to form my own ideas, or are the same idea anyway because they source from the same belief. But it is MY belief. I don't offload my thinking onto something artificial ever... Because I can never remove my beliefs from my communication (unless in rare occasions I find the need to be elusive).

I was made to feel weird because I didn't go the cliche route. Any kind of personal input is punished or rediculed. And it reflected in some of my grades. One time i had to redo an assignment because the teacher said I plagiarized. I asked her proof and all she said was: No one writes like this. The level was beyond me. I was so mad. Because it made me fall behind on other assignments. I had less trouble whenever I did decide to plagiarize. I'm never going back to a school. Not even for free.
There's nothing I've ever heard that holds a candle to these lectures.

I actually noticed this phenomenon of weakness if you don't express true thoughts and feelings but I'm not confrontational, recognize people are complex, so often they are not expressing their own true thoughts, feelings!! So it turns into empathy to the truth through false statements!! Ugh..Lolol

To summarize what Peterson is saying, all you have to do is learn the concepts of “Introjection” and “Habitus Possession.” Memorize these concepts, and be forever weary of these mental illnesses. Additionally, they are closely related to Mass Psychosis.

This short speech invoked a part of my that has been sleeping for years.
The second part seems harder to me where he talks about finding what’s false instead of the truth. I like when he talks about attention. And talks about finding the source of our ideas.

Why Do Some People Find Thrill-Seeking Activities Such as Bungee Jumping or Skydiving Exciting Rather Than Scary?
Whether it is bungee jumping, skydiving, other extreme sports, thrill-seeking theme park rides and even scary movies, in such instances we want to feel the limit and how we breach it: that we reach a state beyond our capabilities.
We then enjoy the state. There is pleasure in exercising a certain level of control over fear.
The pleasure of having control over fear then becomes stronger than the instinct of fear that surfaces.
When fear dominates us, it feels like it penetrates every cell of our bodies, all the way to our bones’ marrow. That is why the pleasure we experience when we feel a certain level of control over fear is very powerful.
However, if we felt that our lives had a higher eternal purpose, and we set ourselves on a path to attain that purpose, we would then feel no need for these kinds of transient pleasures, no matter how strong they are.
We would also then not fear anything because we would see that we are controlled by the upper force, which wishes solely to develop us in order to benefit us with its eternal and perfect quality of love, bestowal and connection.

Can Humans be Tamed?
We need to develop ourselves as human beings beyond our animate level of existence, and it is possible with a certain kind of education.
Developing ourselves as human beings means learning and balancing ourselves with the integral laws of nature operating on our lives. If we learn how to positively connect among each other in human society, with altruistic attitudes replacing our current egoistic attitudes, we then develop ourselves beyond the animate level of existence and become human beings in the fullest sense of the term.
First, we need to provide for our animate lives, giving our physical bodies the food, sex and family that they require, then after taking care of those essentials, we can begin our human development. We then need to learn who and what we are, where we are from, why we exist, how we can develop ourselves, how we can control our human development, what our attitude to our surrounding society should be, what society’s attitude should be toward us, and how we can develop together harmoniously, i.e. us in relation to society, and society in relation to us.
We need to supply ourselves with this development that will make us human beings. Unfortunately, I see nobody understanding what it means to develop a human being, and we thus fail to realize such a process. One of the outcomes of our lack of development into human beings is our inability to understand the younger generation. We become increasingly detached from them, and do not know what will happen with them or how to guide them in a beneficial direction. We thus let life unfold as it does, into a proliferation of problems and crise.
Very simply, we need to learn what nature wants from us, and to develop in order to balance with nature’s demands toward us. If we meet those demands, we can then build a harmonious and peaceful world, one that is in balance with nature.
