Tsunami Surge in Honolulu, Hawaii March 11, 2011

  • Small tidal waves in the afternoon following the main waves. I was sitting on my lanai watching the water and noticed that the reef was draining to bare coral and then filling up again in about 15 minutes time. It's about a 15 foot surge. Grabbed the iPhone and decided to record it.

    Same tsunami.
    Large and deadly in Japan.
    Small and harmless in Hawaii.
    Also called The Ripple Effect.

      Not "small and harmless" in Hawaii. Hours earlier, the main / large waves destroyed entire buildings elsewhere in the Hawaiian Islands; no injuries or deaths because thousands of people evacuated due to warnings.

  • @hebneh
    @hebneh 7 років тому +757

    Of course people will look at this and make fun of it - but yes, this is really the effects of a tsunami, only many hours later, and very much reduced in power. A really major tsunami like this one, which traveled all around the Pacific Ocean, will eventually be reduced to a lot of conflicted, refracted forces coming from different directions as the waves bounce off various obstacles like islands and continents. You clearly can see here how the visible waves on the surface move in different, unusual ways, like from left to right diagonally. Normal wind-driven waves will come straight at the shore.

    • @Moodsaver

      then... you call this a fucking tide and a wave.... jebus... why make it so dramatic !!!

      it makes sense why it wouldn't happen with where the main event happen, if you want to see the full force of this, look at the 2011 Fukushima quake, that lead to the Tsunami which caused this, at this point in time, it most likely would just have some minor undercurrents, but if you look at the full scale of it from Japan, it was a very dangerous Tsunami, and it did kill a lot of people

    The reason small tsunamis hit other Pacific coast's was because on March 11,2011 a huge earthquake and tsunami hit Japan but since the tsunami was huge it traveled further but because of how big it was but became smaller because of how far it traveled

    Почему обычные приливы и отливы называют - цунами!? Мне не понятно ! Цунами- когда волна по 5 метров ,когда корабли переворачивает,мощь неимоверная,а такие приливчики на любой воде есть!

    I am here in N. Ca in the SF Bay Area and I was on the 17th floor of our high rise building when I saw the waves. But hours before Inwas standing outside the building and moment after the quake hit in Japan our flag poles began shaking hard then I get an alert on my phone about the quake. Crazy. 3 people died in Ca because they went out to the water after they were advised not too. Hard headed people. Curiosity kills. Not laughing at this either. Some people are so curious that they never see the dangers that lie directly in front of then our around them. Tomorrow is not promised nor is today.

    Being in hawaii sucks...I mean there were people out there actually watching it happened here. When a tsunami warning happens, they just go outside and sit on the beaches. I would too actually. Stupid yes but being here in Oahu, almost nothing happens here. O3o

    I thought this day was related to the tsunami in japan that happened in 2011 but then realized it couldn’t be it because of the differences in the months. BUT WEIRD RIGHT??? Cause only a few months later the tsunami would hit japan...

      Actually since Japan is at least 15 hours ahead of Hawaii that means that this had to have occurred that many hours for the water to get there. Just because it was March 11th at noon in Hawaii doesn’t mean that it was the same day in Japan. Since he claims it was noon here in Hawaii then that means that it would have been 5 AM in Japan the next day after the tsunami had hit. So there for, it wasn’t the same day. I was wrong but realized why I was wrong.
