Tsunami Surge in Honolulu, Hawaii March 11, 2011

- Small tidal waves in the afternoon following the main waves. I was sitting on my lanai watching the water and noticed that the reef was draining to bare coral and then filling up again in about 15 minutes time. It's about a 15 foot surge. Grabbed the iPhone and decided to record it.
Same tsunami.
Large and deadly in Japan.
Small and harmless in Hawaii.
Also called The Ripple Effect.
Nice pfp
Because it's too far from the epicenter
Lol
HAMON
Not "small and harmless" in Hawaii. Hours earlier, the main / large waves destroyed entire buildings elsewhere in the Hawaiian Islands; no injuries or deaths because thousands of people evacuated due to warnings.
Of course people will look at this and make fun of it - but yes, this is really the effects of a tsunami, only many hours later, and very much reduced in power. A really major tsunami like this one, which traveled all around the Pacific Ocean, will eventually be reduced to a lot of conflicted, refracted forces coming from different directions as the waves bounce off various obstacles like islands and continents. You clearly can see here how the visible waves on the surface move in different, unusual ways, like from left to right diagonally. Normal wind-driven waves will come straight at the shore.
then... you call this a fucking tide and a wave.... jebus... why make it so dramatic !!!
@@Moodsaver I did not call this a "fucking tide". And these little waves are still coming ashore hours after entire buildings were destroyed elsewhere in Hawaii.
@@Moodsaver Bro why do you have to swear, do you think it makes you look 'cool', well reality check here it doesn't!!!!!!!

That ocean is not behaving normal at all. It's scary to imagine how it was for the Japanese. I was still a little kid when it happened so I didnt fully grasp the scale of the disaster
the ocean is behaving like the ocean there isn’t a normal it’s always changing and moving
Like everyone says
Be the cameraman.
You’ll live 👍
how i mispronounced "live" makes more sense, and a pun too
I'm glad you are ok. That was intense
I know I was terrified for him
Ikr it was huge
Compared to the tiny one at japan
Of course. Camera men never die.
😂
Some people says, “It’s like a normal sea” but they didn’t know that there’s a mini tsunami.
Nice view for some very small waves. I can't even imagine Japan :(

Imagine Aceh
Thats hawwai
James Martinez - dont you know that the tsunami also affected japan in a greater scale
James Martinez No he meant about the tsunami in japan on March 11, because those are the after shocks of a tsunami.
James Martinez When will we meet hawwai
“Big, massive wave, but it’s really small” what?
lol
He meant long(massive), but small(height).
YAINT ! Thats what she said ;)
It looked small from his hotel. You can see palm trees that are Tiny suggesting that he is high up
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
It's literally the ocean sloshing around the pacific basin. Like a gigantic tub. It's insane to see so clearly though. Kind of spooky.
That wave shoaling a kilometer offshore would have had me getting the foxtrot out.
I used to live there :D 0:39 toward the left side of Koko Head Crater
I was in Hawaii at the time thank god it didn’t happen but was so impressed how fast they had everyone off the streets
it makes sense why it wouldn't happen with where the main event happen, if you want to see the full force of this, look at the 2011 Fukushima quake, that lead to the Tsunami which caused this, at this point in time, it most likely would just have some minor undercurrents, but if you look at the full scale of it from Japan, it was a very dangerous Tsunami, and it did kill a lot of people
Dang this was made in 2011 and still better than my videos
they are always better because u dont have any

Thank you for documenting this.
I did so much research on the 2011 earthquake and this is the first time I'm seeing this footage. Very interesting!

The reason small tsunamis hit other Pacific coast's was because on March 11,2011 a huge earthquake and tsunami hit Japan but since the tsunami was huge it traveled further but because of how big it was but became smaller because of how far it traveled
Nova 0407 Thank you! It amazes me how stupid people are sometimes!
I actually had no idea what was going on til this comment lol ty
People who say this is a normal beach/ocean behavior or that it is not dangerous are probably the ones caught off guard when there's a tsunami. Noticing the small changes is key when it comes to the ocean
It's so pretty there! Thanks for the nice quality video!
Um I know where you live(d) I guess you are/were my neighbor. Do you live on.... Paiko beach ? :)
I got a correction to make lol. Your name is Mark right? You live in California now I think. You used to live on... Maybe I shouldn't say your address lol
Vegan Apples xD
You are on Kahala Beach. I lived in Kaimuki for years. While you were filming this I was on the top level of the parking structure at Ala Moana mall, I saw just about the same thing you did. And the entire place was as empty as I've ever seen it of people.
Really interesting. May seem small, but the power in behind that would be extraordinary.
He knows there is a small tsunami coming and he stands there lol
One of the worst disasters imaginable would be a large scale tsunami in the Atlantic ocean affecting the North American continent. So many major cities near, at, or below sea level. And it's a possibility.
After living in the Netherlands for so long I probably would have laughed at the „high tide line“ shown in this video had I arrived later that day.
For context: the low tide in my town reveals about 100 more meters of beach...
is there lava and fire in the netherlands? or ghasts?
Tsunami starts: I'm just going to sit here and filming it cuz why not
Team Squares It’s not dangerous. The tsunami was very small by the time it got to Hawaii.
Guys "tidal wave" come from tide. A Tsunami has nothing to do and is not created by a tide.
Johannes Jahn i believe that tidal waves are affected by the incoming tsunami
Johannes Jahn they come from tide pods
The affects of an earthquake somewhere else is affecting other beaches the water is going somewhere else and it's gonna cause a tsunami
Tidal wave is actually just a really crappy name for a tsunami
Luca Grinyer Did you read the main comment?
No way in the world that I would be standing there. There's no telling how large the wave would actually be when it comes in. Gonna end up being one of those missing people.
Who is looking at this video in 2021?😅

That was a 40m+ wave in Japan. Something similar happened yesterday from a volcano eruption but not nearly as big, should be about comparable waves in Hawaii, almost 3m in Japan and 1.5m in California. Tonga's internet is cut off, i hope everyone is okay.
Congrats This 10 Year Old Video Was Still In Your Recommendations!
very tragic......i bet that took you weeks to clean up!! i hope you received some government aid
jindivik321 my prayers go out to their families
He said that because it was the after effect of the earthquake in japan
Lil Floors ahahaha 😂. .
jindivik321 ahahaha 😂 ..
Oh gosh, these waves are nothing compared to San Diego..🤦🏽♀️
2:12 You call that a fast wave where you live? Then the ocean must be incredibly still there!
10 hours more like 10 years ago will become history
I don't understand how more people don't understand that when you witness the the water line of the ocean has been sucked out that it means there is a tsunami in bound
I hope there was no casulties that was very stressful exspearance for you hope you get over the trauma
I believe they are still seeing psychiatrists to deal with this dramatic, cataclysmic disaster in Oahu. Oh the humanity of it all.
I'm glad to get some good reference on an incoming Tsunami
ANYBODY ELSE GET THIS RECOMMENDED RANDOMLY?
Glad yall made it out
this is the worst thing that would you happen
Wow! Think about being half way to Japan???
are you sure it wasn't the tide?
he stated in the vid the month and the date
phanthom091 the tide doesnt go in and out that fast
Ahhhh yea. Tsunamis have nothing to do with tides... it is all about suddenly displaced water,... in this case caused by tectonics.
Dude the tide takes 6 hours to change, not six minutes
this came from the 2011 Japan earthquake + tsunami that totaled many cities and towns in Japan. This is the tsunami after crossing halfway across the Pacific.
Funny thing is, I lived in Hawaii and still am living in Honolulu and yet i only find this this video now???
Even such small waves look like a potentially dangerous phenomenon. I surfed many big wind-driven waves but I think I’ll be scared even to enter into water towards these waves.
My sister was born on the same day! Her birthday is March 11,2011
Wow I just noticed this happened on the same day, when the Mar 11 tsunami in Japan struck
Rafael Andre Bagano yea it effected the stuff like San Francisco
When I was Swimming in Naval, There was a Wave but big and My Family thinks it is a Small wave but big! 😡
Where the heck is the 15 foot wave? Do you mean 15 Inches?
It’s not a 15 foot wave it’s a 15 foot surge. They are different. It means that the water receded and then surged up 15 feet, which doesn’t happen in that short amount of time unless it’s a tsunami.

It's very confusing is a tsunami suppose to be big well that day I was scared there might be a tsunami like the one from Japan
By the time it reached Hawaii it had already lost 99% of its energy from traveling over the pacific ocean.
Lucas Favazzi But how do you know there was no interference between Japan and Hawaii?
this came from the 2011 Japan earthquake + tsunami that totaled many cities and towns in Japan. This is the tsunami after crossing halfway across the Pacific.
So the water is receding and there are surges which you know means there will be a tsunami and you are just standing right there infront of the ocean ..... This logic is flawed
He knew that this tsunami was the same one from Japan that struck earlier that day, but he also knew that it would have to cross half of the freaking Pacific to reach Hawaii; he knew it wouldn't be strong.
man those waves came from ohio or what the heck??? they traveled a lot of distance and remained intact the whole time!
I was in Honolulu In late March to Early April in 2021 and i am happy it was a normal vacation
Tidal waves? they're not called that.
its another name
You guys have no idea what you’re talking about 😂
bro.. tidal waves are simply waves that are formed by the tide.. even a tiny wave can be a tidal wave. don’t talk if u dont know what ur talking about😂
Sanhinda Peiris all yall dont know what youre talking about. This is a phenomenon called a storm surge. It is basically rising water in a tsunami like form.
this came from the 2011 Japan earthquake + tsunami that totaled many cities and towns in Japan. This is the tsunami after crossing halfway across the Pacific.
Huh if the water doesn’t recede where are the waves?

March 11 2011 was the same date as the tohuku tsunami, hope you are okay!
did you watch 2011 movie?
Sudden sea level change, it like a wave but its not a normal wave as such it as its the entire ocean with water movement right down to the sea floor, dragging with it sand and rock.
Why would you still be there if there's going to be billions of gallons of water going right where you're standing?
Wait.....
THAT'S THE TSUNAMI I WENT THROUGH WHEN I WAS ALMOST TWO YEARS OLD!!! 😱
Was this the after effect of the earthquake in New Zealand?.
No...it was from the Earthquake in Japan were thousends of people died. The cause of Fukushima Daichii reactor meltdown 10years ago
Looks just like waves
Julian Nankivell that wave is from japan tsunami
Julian Nankivell its a storm surge. Idk why he called it a tsunami surge but a storm surge is a phenomenon of rising water in a tsunami like substance
BOB.org so I am a moron for making a statement? Fuck off
DiegoSoLoco it is a tsunami

@@fbl7360 :D me too
Hello
Woah, you are from 2011.
Hehe
The water has to get small waves in the front, and then the water gets back and the tsunami starts in seconds.
Tidal waves?
Stop hating, it’s a tsunami surge not a tsunami.
That’s it ?
Почему обычные приливы и отливы называют - цунами!? Мне не понятно ! Цунами- когда волна по 5 метров ,когда корабли переворачивает,мощь неимоверная,а такие приливчики на любой воде есть!
still looking for that huge wave he said
It happened on the same day when the Tōhoku Earthquake happened
This was actually a day where a Japanese tsunami that was 131 feet tall and killed 20’000 people and this was the same day it happened
Lol its wrong March 11 2011 is in Japan not in Hawaii
This was on my birthday!
I came when 2021 was behind 9 years ago so long ago ..
That was intense 👍
Cade o tsunami?
Watching in 2020😌🤚
I am here in N. Ca in the SF Bay Area and I was on the 17th floor of our high rise building when I saw the waves. But hours before Inwas standing outside the building and moment after the quake hit in Japan our flag poles began shaking hard then I get an alert on my phone about the quake. Crazy. 3 people died in Ca because they went out to the water after they were advised not too. Hard headed people. Curiosity kills. Not laughing at this either. Some people are so curious that they never see the dangers that lie directly in front of then our around them. Tomorrow is not promised nor is today.
"I was standing outside" Type O
Being in hawaii sucks...I mean there were people out there actually watching it happened here. When a tsunami warning happens, they just go outside and sit on the beaches. I would too actually. Stupid yes but being here in Oahu, almost nothing happens here. O3o
WHO MADE POSEIDON ANGRY?
That's the same day of the tsunami in Japan in 2011
it's the same tsunami
GODZILLA IS BACK (for people who dont get this the town that was crashed by godzilla in the movie was honolulu) :)
omg why are you not running??
March 11, 2011 was the night I landed on Honolulu and we heard the sirens that night and was wondering what happened
I always have nightmares of huge(not tsunami just big waves) waves. I’d be outta there real quick.
If you think its clickbait look at the back a giant wave
How did they survive!!
well lots of people died in japan from that tsnami but that was the after math of it traveling across the ocean to hawii where this video took place
High tide or low tide
I thought this day was related to the tsunami in japan that happened in 2011 but then realized it couldn’t be it because of the differences in the months. BUT WEIRD RIGHT??? Cause only a few months later the tsunami would hit japan...
It was the same day
That video took place of the Japanese Tsunami
it was the same day though?
@@penguinlim I know I’m dumb but still it happened hours ago and the tsunami warning for Hawaii ended already hours before
Actually since Japan is at least 15 hours ahead of Hawaii that means that this had to have occurred that many hours for the water to get there. Just because it was March 11th at noon in Hawaii doesn’t mean that it was the same day in Japan. Since he claims it was noon here in Hawaii then that means that it would have been 5 AM in Japan the next day after the tsunami had hit. So there for, it wasn’t the same day. I was wrong but realized why I was wrong.
No i gdzie to tsunami?
Why is this in my recommended?
Does the word run come to you at all
Brokenlungs234 Jeff there was literally nothing to worry about
The moment you realise 2011 was 7 years ago
These waves r small it looks like the waves were going in a circle it was on a curve.
