  • People ran for their lives as a tsunami struck Greenland’s west coast on June 17. The tsunami waves were reported after 4.1 magnitude earthquake hit north of the village of Nuugaatsiaq.
    At least four people went missing in the surge of water, BBC reported. Homes in Nuugaatsiaq were washed away.

      You are so right. There was one of those buildings that was a cat rescue. You know how they like to sleep by climbing up to a place in their big size enclosure. The cameras in the building watching the cats saw all of them wake up and get down to the ground quickly. I don't remember the exact time but it was about 30-60 seconds later a big earthquake started shaking the area.
      Somehow before the pressure and force of the tectonic plates being released these cats knew something was about to happen and being on the ground was the best place for them. I wonder if they hear it or if they feel the shifting of the ground (although they were inside), or if their is something else they detect. If we could figure it out that would give people a good head start to safety compared to what we have as a warning of only a few seconds.
      But to stay on point, you are completely right. Inside the animal kingdom there are so many special detectors to all kinds of things that we can only imagine as humans to possess.

      Normally here in Greenland icebergs break, and the water behaves like that, while dogs go crazy. We all had no idea what happened, we all thought it was some iceberg that broke until someone called from that place and we had to send helicopters. We had no tsunami warnings, and when an iceberg breaks, it is not that bad and all the boats go to the ocean to save their boats and they do not usually reach the houses or even dogs. I worked at the heliport in a near by town, the waves even reached us, but thankfully did not reach us. 4 people died. It was late around 11 pm when it happened. One family already went to bed. A baby and her parents. And a man that was outside. It was horrifying.

    We know what tsunami is, and I also have the same question, why were they at the beach watching the water?! They weren't aware of how big the waves were, they only heard the warnings through the radio sent by a hunter who witnessed the landslide slipping down to the water, which caused big waves. Unfortunately, the other village was really hit worse than this, families lost their homes, boats and 300 sleddogs. 4 ppl missing. We've heard that the water didn't pulled back, only that huge waves were on the way. About 150 villagers has been evacuated to some cities, the dogs that survived are also evacuated. They don't know if it would be safe to go back to the villages, because there's still a huge part of the mountain that is cracked and can slide down anytime. I hope my English is well.

    • @Ben_Kimber
      @Ben_Kimber 3 роки тому +1

      @@AB-rm5wh Well, if the water recedes farther from shore than usual, especially if it does it quickly, and the water is frothing at the surface, it's time to run. In this video, you can also see that there appears to be some level of side-to-side motion, which doesn't seem like normal behaviour at the surface. You can also hear the animals in the background start to get louder before it hits. Animals have a way of knowing something's not right long before we typically catch on, so it's a good idea to pay attention to what they're doing. Basically, if you're at the coast, and the water and animals appear to be behaving different, it's good to know beforehand what that might mean, and if it looks distinctly like the signs of an imminent tsunami, warn everyone around you, and get to high ground, though if high ground is too far, get to a large building, maybe a hotel or apartment building, and go to the upper floors. This is off the top of my head, but if you're going to a coastal region, it might seem paranoid, but it's probably not a terrible idea to do a quick search on tsunamis and other hazards of the region to know the signs. Also, a lot of populated coastal regions also have early warning systems in place.

    Of course if the ocean moves away from the shore more and more, that's a bad sign, but other more subtle tsunami warnings include, it suddenly gets calm and quiet everywhere, waves near the shore simmer down and/or the entire off-shore ocean seems to drift away lethargically. This video clear shows that eerie effect. If there is a shallow area far off shore, one might see a wave-front or rumbling white water approaching but this isn't always the case. Sometimes, the slow sea suddenly comes back and keeps on coming.

      There also needs to be more tsunami detecting buoy/satellite/sensor systems besides the ones in the Pacific Ocean. I know it's in the ring of fire and earthquakes (and volcanos) are much more likely to occur but that still isn't any excuse for the Indiana Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean to go without any equipment and sensors to warn people of possible impending tsunamis. It's not like there hasn't been some very deadly tsunamis hit there, I really think it's crazy that only the Pacific Ocean is monitored.

    Terrifying! I understand that this was a "megatsunami", and therefore very different from a tsunami (the former caused by a landslide or rockslide, the latter by a tectonic event), and I do understand that this was rare, perhaps unprecedented, for this particular part of Greenland. Nevertheless, the HUGE waves in the distance were unmistakable, and they were moving at a rapid clip directly for the shore on which the people were standing. I have to wonder why they decided to tarry so long and look at the impending disaster. Do people get mesmerized by powerful natural events? I suppose that would explain storm chasing, and getting far too close to a tornado. Still, speaking personally, I'd like to think I'd run as fast as I could to high ground.

      I was there. No actual waves at all, just a surge. As with all tsunamis, there is no actual waves of any great size. It is the surge of water that gets you. The written hights of waves one sees in records and youtube are not from the actual height of a wave, but the sea level height change of the surge. Big difference, but people keep believing the later. For example: The 2011 Japanese tsunami was one of the biggest in modern history. The largest actual, true wave generated by it only measured 25 feet.

These are villagers in Greenland, which is basically a subarctic colony, and many likely do not have access to, or in this case, pay attention to, the outside world. I live 600km away from the ocean, in a country where tsunamis don't occur. The only way it can is if the Canary islands gets swallowed into the ocean and even then it wouldn't cause serious damage.
    How is it that I, the person that should not be worried about tsunamis, know more about the warning signs of them than people who live right next to the water?
    I swear to God seeing people so oblivious to the signs that the tsunami is coming was so frustrating, seeing the chained animals go crazy, the tide suddenly receding and the oncoming wave and not one person being aware of that made me furious.

      actually geologist believe this tsunami was caused by a land slide. If a landslide is big enough and the ocean is in the direct path of the land slide it can cause a mega tsunami. Many times bigger then a tsunami caused by earthquakes. Here is a good read about the Mega Tsunami (largest recorded tsunami) in Alaska caused by a massive land slide. You can find many videos about this same tsunami here on Yourube.
