It's time to channel your inner Sith lord because the PlayGo now comes in red and black and it is fire. This color combination was the second most popular color behind the original black device, so the manufacturer produced a limited run of the PlayGo with this color scheme. This video covers the new device along with some tips for Pocket Go/PlayGo users that want to change emulators and lower their audio levels.

By the way, there's a new custom firmware, the Rouge CFW for the Pocket Go 2 (It works on the PlayGo as well). You just need to flash the sd_image to the main sd card using something like Balena's Etcher. It also features a recompiled version of PCSX4All, which should have additional updates. Doing this will fix the issue of the volume, and will allow for different recognized file formats such as Exfat and NTFS. You can just use the OPK updater, BUT ONLY IF YOU ACTUALLY HAVE THE CUSTOM FIRMWARE INSTALLED. Otherwise it will bootloop and you'll need to reflash the SD Card to get it working again. Feel free to make a tutorial about this. The last commit to the CFW was 2 days ago so it is extremely active and will likely continue to be updated for a while.

@@SavageCore6 My PlayGo definately sounded quieter than before after the firmware update. So its definitely worth a try. It might not fix it for everyone, but there are other features that people might like from it.

For the volume, a more sensible mod is to get an equivalent speaker with a higher impedance value.
Commons values range from 4 ohms thru to 32 ohms. You can measure your speaker with a multimeter in resistance mode to get an idea of what the value is (resistance is often +/-20% off from the impedance value).
Usually, the volume is cut in half when you double the impedance, so if the device puts out 1 watt in a 4 ohm speaker, using an 8 ohm speaker will put out 0.5 watt, 16 ohms does 0.25 watt, and so on.
Doing that may also reduce distortion at higher Volumes, since the audio amplifier isn't "pushed" as hard.

For those wanting an updated ReGBA while keeping the menu button working, I compiled this OPK: s.spoonm.org/etc/regba.opk
It doesn't just change the short power press to the menu button, but also contains a more minimal border since the default one annoys me. I'll probably try adding support for L2 and R2 to create hotkeys later. I compiled this from what appears to be the latest active fork.

I finally picked up yesterday Play-Go(black) and its Freaking Awesome!!!
Never before have I heard people complain that a Chinese handheld was too loud until today.
To be fair, this one is the loudest device I own at 100% volume - it's a force of nature.
When I heard about people complaining about the sound I thought to myself "it's obviously parents complaining about it, not kids" go figure. 🤷🏾
I got my PocketGo2 (same device) from retromimi and I love it. I got my speaker quiter with a simple voltage devider.

Got the red and black playgo because of your video and used your link. Took 3 months to finally get to me due to covid, but I'm very happy with it. No button problems, sound is way too high for the lowest setting. Muffling it with tape is a bad idea since it muffles it, not turn it down but if you're not in public then the minimum level is fine. Actually prefer the plastic rim to a metal one. Metal appeals to people because they think metal = expensive but metal = weight which makes drops more impactful. Also metal doesn't give, so metal ends up getting scratched and bent. Also it would feel inconsistent. All in all, no regrets.

Ordered by black playgo the day the video released and ive had it for about two weeks. Ordered the white pocketgo 2 on video release way before Christmas and it still hasn't arrived. They're sure taking their sweet time.

As of right now, it seems to be a hardware limitation.

that's why I stated the benefit of fixing it and thought they maybe just got lazy or rushed the product for release

@@TakiUdon Sorry to hear that you couldnt get an advance review copy, but I still recommend picking one up after it starts shipping around end of january for your channel, doing its own review and comparisons since you have done a great job so far in comparing the others for your viewers. A good way to further build your audience. From what I have viewed on ETAPRIMEs initial tests with a advance copy its performance potential is higher in certain emulators due to its specs. Whether its a better choice for certain classic emulators that already run very well on the other devices, have a great community support is a good question to look into.
I bought the black playgo through your link as these devices run some of the emulators better then the 3001 psp I've been using for awhile. I have the entire catalog of rg350/gcw0 emulators I'm going through now with hope most all work as well on the playgo so I wont need a rg350. I got the atari 5200, colecovision, intellivision, atari 2600 (stella393) all running very well so far. Dont put the 5200.rom for the atari 5200 emulator (a5200.opk) into the /media/home/a5200 directory, it wont work. Instead put 5200.rom bios into /media/home and it works.
Just ordered one of these off of Temu and it can't get here soon enough!! Of course I'm excited to play Game Boy, Nintendo, Super Nintendo and Sega again but my main excitement is PlayStation 1 emulation in the palm of my hand. Haven't played a great deal of those games in years so I'm looking forward to it. Tekken 3, Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, and Twisted Metal to name a few. Great time killer before work, when the wife and my aunt are watching something on streaming, and at night before bed. 😁😁

Now all this device needs is EmulationStation running flawlessly on it and I'd be head over heels for it. Love the design of the PlayGo better than the RG350 (especially after playing PS1 games and noticing I haven't laid a single finger on the right analog stick) so it would be cool to make it my main retro handheld out of all the handhelds I own (like the odroidgo, ldkgame, pocketgo, rg350, pocketsprite, gbmicro, gbasp, etc.)

The PlayGo is still my go-to handheld for PS1 emulation and below. Just a great device for on-the-go retro gaming. I prefer to use headphones so the volume problem is not an issue.

Thank you for the review. I still prefer Playgo/Pocketgo handheld over RG350, although those reported dpad's issues in some initial units. Finally I've chosen the red release from Wolsen, plus extra battery and glass /// crossing fingers! ;)

I ordered three of the original black ones right after I watched your review on the black one.
I have a couple of RG350s and the PlayGo plays some of my PSX images very well while the RG350 has glitching and sound issues on them. I first thought I had a bad unit but both of my RG350s act exactly the same way on the same games.
I can't blame it on my game images because when I move the SD with my games to any of my PlayGo units they play flawlessly.
The PlayGo has their competition beat when it comes to performance, price, menu button functions and form factor.
A few days with my PlayGo made me regret my purchase of the RG350s.
It's interesting to see how two devices with almost identical hardware specs and operating systems can perform so differently on the same game and emulator. I've seen a few PSX games that the RG350 has trouble with that the PlayGo runs well. There are of course games like Bloody Roar that neither will perform well with. I have yet to play any PSX game that performed better on the RG350 than the PlayGo. I can live without the RG350's second analog stick. None of my favorite games require two analog sticks. I'm glad I didn't wait on the red one. I like the original black and silver model better. I hope 2020 brings us some affordable handheld consoles with higher specifications.
If it continues to improve at the rate it did last year, we may be able the play PSP games on an OpenDingus platform. Of course you can play PSP games now on a high end Android phone. I want to use my phone as a phone and not as an overpriced game console.

Check to make sure HLE bios is off in your 350 and you have the newest PSX4ALL
@@TakiUdon Thanks for the tips, I turned off the HLE simulated bios right away and I do have the latest PSX4ALL. I also have every available PSX bios file to use.
I tried adjusting most of the graphics settings one at a time. I did not try frame skip.
Using frame skip is not an acceptable solution for me.
Nothing so far has helped so I set them back to default.
I get no sound from Metal Slug X and I get sound that is badly out of sync on Abe's Oddysee.
I'm going to try using the PSX4ALL app from the PlayGo on the RG350. It just may do the trick. I'll comment as to what good or bad it causes after I try it. If it doesn't help or run at all, I can always swap it back. My RG350s do play several other PSX games very well but the ones giving me problems are a few of my favorites.
@@TakiUdon Your mentioning of turning off the HLE simulated bios made me look at it a bit closer. After turning off the HLE simulated bios I discovered there were no bios files available in the bios folder. I copied them from my PlayGo SD card over to my RG350 SD card. I then selected SCHP1001 for the default bios. Now playing PSX games on the RG350 is just as good as on the PlayGo. Thank You SO much for steering me in the right direction. If you hadn't mentioned the HLE simulated bios setting, I probably would have given up before finding the real problem. I REALLY wanted my RG350s to run my PSX favorites correctly. I went all out buying these and bought the aluminum shell models for both of them.

Now that you have black frames being produced any plans on making Full black versions? More in-line with the first test versions. Holding back on buying one seeing if you release a full black one.

Taki, do you know if there is a version of the regba.opk that has support for the analog stick on this device? The stock one worked but had the border issue, and the newer version fixes the border issue but the analog doesn't work. Seems like there in no way to modify this without actually unpacking the opk file right?
I'm running the latest from the gcw page and am having 0 issues with using analogue as a dpad. You enabled it in the options right?

Any idea where I could get a better thumbstick cap, the one that was provided with the pocketgo is a bit wobbly. Other than dremeling out the little bar in the hollow, not sure if there is an alternative.
I got my PlayGo today, and I noticed there is light bleed on only the top and bottom of the console, but otherwise I love this thing. I am trying to find out if the Rouge CFW works on my PlayGo V1

I have developed a strange glitch on the PlayGo V2.2 (currently using Rogue firmware but still have the old SD card). Some of the PS roms will not work and there are 2 PS roms that do work but the FMV audio is muted. It happened as i was testing each PS rom to see if it would work. As I got to the Lunar Silver Star Story the FMV audio was working normal. So i quickly exited it as the intro cut-scene was being played. After i boot up the rom again, the FMV audio is now muted and cannot figure out why. Same for Lunar 2 as it has the same glitch. Is there a website or a forum i could visit to get more assistance?
Just bought it although I have rg350 n pocketgo v2. Like the red color.
Personally, I care more about the power under the hood(capability of the device) than the plastic body.

You can add pretty much any emulator that was released for the GCW/RG350 on this device

Just when I decided to pass on this device, they release my favorite color. I just dont see these being $65. It was like the went up 10 dollars overnight not to long ago.
On my PlayGo, I have an issue where I can't insert any SD Card into Slot 2... For some reason it feels like something is blocking it.
For example, I've removed the SD Card that comes with the device from Slot 1 and tried inserting it into Slot 2.. It doesn't fit.
I tried inserting my own SD Card into Slot 2, it won't fit.
However BOTH SD Card's work when I slide them into Slot 1..
Am I doing something wrong? Or do I have a faulty product? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There were shipping delays, but most factories and companies have been back to work or are applying to be able to go back to work. This company is located in Shenzhen, so they need to apply.

Small ones have their place and yeah, bigger screens would make them more expensive (for decent spec devices) but Im sure theres plenty of people that would still buy them.
At least 5" would be good but personally Id be good with 6" or 7" even 😁.
@@fonzitheman I mean, it's not like people would stop buying them if they cost over $100 dollars. If they are good quality, I would easily spend $150, which is totally realistic. Though the Play Go is almost perfect already. Just a little on the small side.
@@@nilsl8168 For me the PocketGo 2 has been a disaster'.Launching some apps like clock causes it to freeze,the GBC and Sega emu's work but others like SNES and PSX when launching a game cause it to reboot. Have been in contact with retromimi and the sent my another SD card with FW on but it didnt help. Also I even flashed MiyooMax img,successfully flashed but same problems. I tried flashing Rogue FW and when placing in the device it just bootloops me. Next step is to get money back.
I'm loving mine but there is definitely a part of me that wonders if I should have gone for the RG350.
I'm returning my RG350, and possibly will go for this one. Much more comfortable.

@@dariollanos The volume thing is a little annoying and I like the concept of dual sticks. Also the dpad has minor issues. Don't get me wrong, I love my playgo.

@@dariollanos I tried Star Fox and it seemed ok, as did the PSX games I tried. I think there are a couple PSX games that won't run well though
So after updating the Gba emulator, is there a way to remap the menu button to work inside the emulator like on the stock emulator?
This is just a temporary solution, I'm sure the creator of that emulator will compile a newer one for the device with the menu button used

I have already received 3 of the black PlayGo consoles from the seller in the link. The 4th one is in the US now so I expect it to arrive next week. A LOT depends on who you buy from in China. The seller in Taki's link ships fast. I am still waiting on spare batteries I bought from a different seller. I wish they had been available from the same seller that has the PlayGo consoles. I would have received them weeks ago.

The only issue I’m having is with Oswan, playing games at 76fps..... also I’ve noticed that the international model play go and the American pocket go don’t come with the same things. Like I don’t have any Zelda fan made game. My pocket go also didn’t ship with the temper.opk, I had to get that from someone. Might be a good video to see what comes with what, and maybe set up a little community where we can share .opks, to have the total package.
There might not be updates to the stock firmware, but the “Rogue” custom FW is already up to 1.03..... I’ve got it installed on a 128gb card, with the tf 2 slot having a 128gb card too. About 240gb of storage in total. This little thing is awesome
I have Rogue on a separate card, but I didn't use it in this video because I didn't want to confuse anyone.
Can you give us a link to that custom Firmware? How is it better than the original?
Essentially, it gives you a battery percentage, runs 80mhz faster, and allows you to use different formats for your second SD card.
Trying to decide between this and an android based handheld. Sleep modes really important to me, I remember hearing the first pocket go had a lot of issues suspending, how is it on this one?
@Alex Beyer Yeah android seems the way to go. Just wish there were more options with built in controls, but oh well. Hopefully one day.
I had a gpd xd device for emulation on android, but after about a year it would only turn on if plugged, and when you plug it the controls get jambled. Probably an issue with the battery. The optimal use was to charge the 6000mah battery with a 5v charger and I was using high end chargers from brands like anker. Im much more optimistic with a usb c device with an easy to replace battery like this one.
Having said that, emulation on android is well above the average mark. Some sega cd games wont run, but only a few. Psx and n64 are good, and everything below that runs properly.
I really want this but i've already got a CFW N3DS and Vita :( I really like the small form factor of this and it seems less hassle with putting games on
Do you recommend to change the firmware to the "rogue custom firmware"? or is it gonna be some new "official" firmware, i have no idea where to find any info about this. and also, do i need ps1 bios for the emulator to work? if so, then should i put the bios (i guess two or three of them) in the same directory as the gba one?
It's not worth updating to rogue yet. As for the bios, it needs to be copied to your SD card in any place that you want. You'll point to it within the emulator if you turn off HLE bios.

The price point for these thing would be absolutely perfect if it had a second analog an and HDMI slot that could eventually be made to work. Sicne the board itself already contains support for it, I wonder why didn't the developers went all out to making this thing a bit more future proof.

I'm waiting for Rogue to get more fleshed out and to include more features. As of right now, I think stock is a better experience for the average person buying these devices.

You may want to check out DB TECH channel if you want Rogue. Nothing really nice about Rogue. Just small detail like battery percentage instead of battery image. Something like that.

I finally got my pocket go 2 and need to know if I can clean swap the SD cards between the two. The Pocket go came with a much larger 32G card installed.

When I got my PocketGo device it arrived with its speakers dead/completely silent
Audio is still played through headphones and I currently have my PocketGo plugged into a Bluetooth speaker at home, but on the go my only option is to use headphones

I think you'll have to open it. Maybe the plug of the speaker detached
But careful, since there's been a case where someone opened it and the inner plastic literally melted and couldn't be closed again.
I legitimately wasn't interested in the play go because I thought it was too big compared to the original pocket go however now that it's red I might have to get it
What about battery life? It’s 2000mAh it lasts the double of pocket go? Could go for 8h long for gba games?
So this is essentially the pocketgo 2 in another skin.
Ive read that updating the gba emulator in the pocketgo 2 creates an issue where the menu button stops working and you have to exit emulators by pressing start and select, and that another important system shortcut which I cant remember now fired the gba emulator instead of doing its original thing. Can you comment on that on the pocketgo 2 and on this device?
You would exit the emulator my single tapping the power key and closing it from that menu
It worked so well for the time being. Now I can't get this system to turn on at all. Got a new battery, and even went back to base firmware. Nothing worked.
Please show how to fix inputs Im having problems with the inputs even on the buttons I think the membranes are defectice.

how do you get the speaker out of the front plastic? It's in there really good
I flexed the case very gently and tugged a little on the connector cable, but you should be able to get something to help pry from the perimeter of the speaker for leverage.

About the input issues - I had some with mine (Playgo) on the dpad and face buttons, after a day or so it eased up. I think it's just issues with the manufacturing tolerances of the case and most of the time it will sort itself out as normal use wears away the offending bits of plastic.

They are identical in terms of performance, so it just comes down to personal preference.

Rg350 100% because the inputs and volume work out of the box.
Apart from personal preference (controls layout, etc), there are more factors, like a lot of these units are faulty one way or another (dpad, unglued screen), so it's not only a matter of preference but a matter of common sense. And I prefer this one over RG350 because of its layout, but...

Can you help me, when I had the ps1 emulator open my roms would not play it would just go to a switch disk menu so i went into settings and hit set to default. Now the ps1 emulator wont open at all. I try to go into it and it just kicks me to my emulator page.

Does anyone know if the pocketgo 2 can use a 256gb sd card in slot 2? What format can it read? Mine cant see anything on my exFat 256GB.
It must be Fat32 and you'll need to use an application like windiskimager to do it on Windows

I found a company who sells the analog or makes a similar one i guess im just going to desolder the pins and instal a new one im sure its just broken it sounds like its grinding
@@dannyortega6454 No need, if you have a PlayGo it will either be fixed by a firmware update that I was going to try to get you to do over Discord, it the company will replace it. Desoldering that stick is a pain in the ass.

I already took the stick off just waiting on the new one i dont think its an issue with software it makes a cracking sound now when i received the analog was smoth and didnt make noise now it sounds like sand paper and it cracks

It worked on the GPD XD but that is running at 1.4 gigahertz and this is only at 1gigahertz
I got Neo Geo CD to work on my Pocketgo, I just took the Neo4All emulator from the RG350 Github, and have it load CCD images.

Damn id love to know too, I wanted to try neo geo CD on my LDK but kinda gave up on it. Didn't feel like devoting a ton of time like I had too for sega cd
@@travissmith8017 it's easy to set up honestly I just had trouble finding it I'll add a link
To set it up you just put the neogeo cd BIOS in home/.neo4all folder and that's where you put your ROMs
You start up it creates the folder you open up
