  • More footage of baby orangutan Jarang getting carried by his mother Jingga.
She carries him in an unusual way but is being more careful with him than she
    used to be.
Filmed in February 2024 Baby Jarang has put weight on since my last visit and seems stronger and more alert. Jingga's methods are still unconventional and she still shows inexperience but she is caring for baby and feeding him well.
The newborn baby is a critically endangered bornean orangutan born to first time Orangutan mother Jingga
this video was recorded in February 2024
UA-cam sensation Jingga has had social media fame before when a video featuring her went viral back in 2015 - viral video - monkey sees a magic trick
The video was filmed at her in her previous home Barcelona Zoo in Spain
Jingga move to her new home Blackpool Zoo in 2017 to join her new Blackpool Orangutan family as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)
14 year old Jingga was born in Barcelona in 2009 to mother Jawi and Father Karl
Now Jingga is settled at Blackpool zoo and has given birth for the first time to the tiny baby boy orangutan named Jarang
The father of the newborn baby orangutan is 13 year old Kawan who has recently moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands and was an instant hit with the resident female orangutans Cherie Summer and Jingga
He came to the zoo as part of the European Endangered Species program after his much loved predecessor Ramon was moved to a new group in Germany where he has just become a new father himself
Kawan was specially selected by experts to join the female group at Blackpool Zoo and has settled into his new role as alpha male orangutan very well
We have recently added Blackpool Zoo to our list of zoos that we will be frequently visiting to film the apes, so watch out for more footage of this fantastic zoo. Blackpool has Gorillas and Bornean Orangutans and we were really impressed with both areas.
There are currently 5 Bornean Orangutans in one family group at Blackpool Zoo consisting of adult females Cherie Summer and Jingga
Alpha Male Kawan and the new male baby orangutan Jarang

This mother is struggling. Jarang still is very swollen in the testicular area. I am horrified about this zoo. I am in America and Blackpool zoo will not receive our emails.
I emailed Robyn Vinter at the Guardian. She did a series of articles about Jarang when he was first born. I explained the situation and asked her to run an updated article. She emailed me back and told me she contacted the zoo and they closely watching Jingga and Jarang so she saw no need to follow-up. I was very disheartened. Maybe if others would email her, she may check into it. My heart is broken over these two. I've been praying for them from the very beginning. At this point, I don't believe the zoo. Other zoos would have stepped in long before now and possibly taken the baby until he was strong enough to be with his mother. God help Jingga and Jarang. The baby looks lifeless to me. He's close to nine months old.

If Jinnga’s baby brother died early, maybe it’s a hereditary physical condition that has affected Jarang. I believe the zoo knows the problem, can’t do anything to fix it and are keeping baby and mom together is the best current solution. These animals are too valuable for a reputable zoo to ignore. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, if there is something mentally wrong with Jarang then there is absolutely nothing that Jingga can do other than love and care for her baby the best that she can. All of us viewers are just speculating as to what is wrong with Jingga and Jarang. A lot of the viewers are also blaming Blackpool Zoo, but the reality is that Blackpool Zoo may be doing all that they can do behind the scenes that we don't see in Ape Tracker's videos. I want Ape Tracker to continue to post videos, but there is also a part of me that does not just because of all the disrespect Jingga and Blackpool Zoo gets without any of us knowing the facts of what the real situation is.

      Infant (0-3 Years)
Soon after birth, infants learn to use their fingers to grip onto their mothers’ chests. An infant's grip is extremely firm, capable of supporting its own body weight with just their hands.
Two weeks following birth, infants usually have learned how to sit upright and use its hands.
Babies begin eating soft fruit, in addition to nursing, at around three months of age. Initially mothers help prepare the solid food by grinding it up with their teeth, then giving it to their young to chew.
Around two years of age, infants transition from hanging onto their mother's chest to riding on their backs

Amen! Blaming Jingga and Blackpool Zoo for a situation that none of us has all the facts on is just plain wrong. We are not the experts. We are viewers of a UA-cam channel that isn't affiliated with the zoo. Just because we have watched short video clips of other zoos doesn't make any of us experts. And this is not an Asian zoo where there might be some cause for concern (Tama and Taipei Zoos are highly reputable though with primates). I am almost positive that Blackpool Zoo has probably been consulting with other zoos, primatologists, and veterinarians. This may be a situation where there is nothing they can do but wait it out especially if Jarang has something mentally wrong with him, as well as physical. Jingga nor Blackpool Zoo should be faulted for that. There seems to be a lot of experts that post on Ape Tracker's videos though.

I've been saying the same thing. The ,oo know what they are doing. For what it's worth I don't think anything is wrong with Jarang and I think Jinga might have been raised by humans and hasn't had much exposure to other orangutans mums to learn from. She holds Jarang, she puts him down to sleep. Much more human actions with human babies. Because she does those one or two things differently it has effected his growth, strength and ability. He will catch up and he is growing. I don't understand some posts that say she doesn't feed him. Clearly she does. Not as much as she would if she carried him in a way he could feed most of the time, and he I think, from watching videos, so not an expert, because he hasn't seemed to be able to climb on her, he is weaker than other baby orangutans. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts crawling before climbing, but he will learn it all in time.
Sorry to AT if my comments were devisive or rude, I guess to me I struggle to understand why people can't see what I see, maybe as much as others can't understand why I don't think there is an medical problem with Jarang. I might be wrong, but one thing I'm certain of is Blackpool zoo know what they are doing and will be doing everything needed by this little family.ily and I wish them all the luck in the world :)

Awwww - there’s our little trooper Jarang and his sweet Mummy❣️ Little man is gaining condition and seems to be more alert as he grows. Like many others, I’m really hoping to see these two continue to thrive together. 🤞 Jingga has not been dealt an easy hand, but she loves her little boy and is doing her best for him. Getting hysterical and blaming the zoo, blaming Jingga, or accusing AT of posting click bait feels really ‘icky’ to me. Sadly not all babies (human or animal) are born in perfect health. They may have difficulties and special needs that will have to be met for the rest of their lives. This doesn’t mean they should be hidden away, or that someone is to blame for their condition! I have always believed that Blackpool Zoo is monitoring Jingga and Jarang and doing everything possible to give them the best care - and I also believe that allowing mother and baby to stay together was a wise decision. The pair have a strong bond and while Jarang may never be 100% healthy, or as developed as others of his age, I’m hoping he can continue to grow and to enjoy a happy life with his Mum. ❤ I’m so thankful to Ape Tracker for the updates on these two❣️

Jarang started getting agitated on top of the wood pole and it was very heartwarming when Jingga gave him some affection to reassure him. It's so obvious how much she loves her baby. It's very likely that carrying him that way is the safest option. He tends to be stiff and has uncontrollable movements... He does not cling tightly enough and will often let go. Jingga adapted and carries him in a way that she knows he won't fall. Jingga and Jarang seem to be doing well! Thank you for the video AT!

This may be a little off-centre, but if Jarang was born prematurely, I’m wondering if hydrocele might be the reason for his enlarged testicles: “A hydrocele is produced by fluid in the sac which normally surrounds the testicle. It often presents as painless swelling in the scrotum (the pouch that holds the testicle). Hydroceles are often found in newborn boys, especially premature infants.” According to this medical website, the swelling usually disappears on its own, but may need surgical intervention if it persists into toddlerhood. I’m NOT a medical doctor, so it’s just a thought. It would be nice to think that little man isn’t in any pain. ❤️

It is better for the baby to be raised by momma, Jingga didn’t abandon him at this point it would be detrimental to mom an baby to be separated so let the professionals do their job you can’t determine what is being done by watching this channels 2 minute videos

Jingga is trying to take care of her baby, but it is obvious she is holding him like a doll or a stuffed animal. This does seem unconventional for a zoo to let this happen, but even in captivity human intervention doesn't always happen. It seems that where once it was more common for zoos to step in and care for the babies, now it is known to have lesser human contact and let nature take it's course. I really hope things work out for this little guy and his mama!!!

I just watched a video from when Jingga was a baby. She broke her arm and was separated from her mom for 2 months, hand-reared and taught how to climb by keepers. As a baby she was carried by the keepers as people carry a human baby, never hanging on a furry blanket. She was distraught, hands and feet in tight fists, very human focussed and uneasy.
But, they maintained good contact with her mom.
When she was united with her mother, Jingga was terrified. She rejected her mom. Her mom tried to calm her and was super gentle and loving to her. The video ends with Jingga sleeping in a bundle of wood wool and her mom, Jawi, sitting close by watching her sleep. Very touching.
I understand Jingga a bit more now.
I do think they should put low climbing ropes in their enclosure for Jarang. Jingga had that as a baby and I think she would know what to do for Jarang.

Jeez, that swelling is still there. It must be very painful, whatever the cause. Jarang is visibly more relaxed during that short time Jingga manages to keep him close to her chest. There it can be seen how he is holding very tightly mom's fur in his fists, just like it should be. He must have strong hands, as he manages to gripe the fur in her legs, as there is not so much fur to hold to. At least that is normal with him. And then Jingga reverts back to dragging him like a rag doll. He seems to be gasping for air at the end of the clip. Or, trying to reach a teat to suckle for milk? Or crying? Orangutan babies do cry.

I am NOT a primate expert....but think about other orang babies at 9 months...it is night and day. I am a former neonatal nurse (and honestly these little guys are not that different)...it's pretty clear he has a developmental disorder...and I think mom is doing a terrific job caring for him with his disabilities. Also look carefully at his left knee and leg. It can bend up but the knee is swollen and the lower leg never moves upward. My opinion only, they are letting mom love this little one for the time it has left. Don't take my word on this...go look at other babies this age. He is loved by his mom. No one can fix developmental disabilities as severe as his.
