Without a doubt you 43alley and Steve shives are my favorite atheists on youtube (coctopus definitely near the top as well) . You guys are great, funny and just present your arguments in highly enjoyable ways. Plus you guys aren't as mainstream as darkmatter2525 or thunderfoot.... because if they were my favorites how else could I be all postmodern and ironic?

Pat Oswalt's stand up commentary on religion is so brilliant in its simplicity. Take any religious concept, and merely substitute real life things into the religious narrative, and it becomes so apparent as to how asinine and destructive religious ideas are. I do this all the time, when arguing with religious apologists, and it works to great effect. Take an example that I use frequently. Jesus' atonement on the cross is seen by Christians as the greatest moral act in history. All I do is substitute Jesus with relatable players, and it becomes apparent as to how morally bankrupt the idea of vicarious redemption is. Let us say an adult murders, rapes, and steals all his life. When he is caught, and is about to face execution, and his brother, who is an upstanding citizen, says that he he will atone for his brother's transgressions and will be executed in his place. The innocent brother also says that his guilty brother's mere belief in the efficacy of his atonement will acquit him, and all fellow believers, of any future wrong doing. Furthermore, anyone who does not agree with the innocent brother substituting for the guilty brother should be put to death. Would any legal system that is just ever allow that? Of course not. It would not be considered just. So how is Jesus', dying for the sins of others, just or moral?

I particularly liked his video showing the similarities between Jesus and Hercules, and how an actual historical figure can become larger than life (and even godlike) over time, as the tales become more exaggerated. Really wish I could find that video again

Hi, Alley. I just wanted to echo some sentiment about some of your videos no longer being available. I remember them being very influential in my personal journey. I been looking all over the place for the Jephthah video, but I guess it must have gotten taken down. It's sad because 43Alley really had some great points made on that video. It seems a lot of the videos were taken down. I remember there being a video you made about UA-cam flagging the channel as hate speech. So maybe this is unfortunately a manifestation of that. I really wish I could find the older videos with the commentary explanations of bible passages. You have such amazing points that rival NonStampCollector and DarkMatter2525. Wish you would bring those old videos back or make a link for me to download them from a different website.

Awesome, I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my favorite Patton Ozwald bits made into one of these comic things. Very nice drawings too.
I like the animation but Patton Oswalt's monologue is based on a false premise and therefore I struggle to find it funny.
The cake in the sky idea came with Christianity and Islam. The Greeks and the Romans built great civilizations and their religion was not based on the "have faith go to heaven - be bad go to hell" principle. And the same applies to all the previous civilizations and those that developed elsewhere on Earth.
It is true that religion allowed physically weaker but smarter individuals (and/or groups) to dominate over others but usually it was more like "if you don't obey me my god will strike you dead".

Right back at the very beginning of human existence - we needed each other.
Even the biggest bad-ass has to sleep - and he is going to need a friend to watch for Leopards and hyenas while he does...
We are puny - our ancestors were puny - we had to look out and care for each other or be cat food.
That is why it is funny. It funny on multiple levels.
On the highest level it is funny because we realize it is a mockery of heaven and the need to control the stupid.
On the next level down it is funny because it is the reduction of a complex dynamics of tribal life into a gross simplification.
And on the next level down, it is funny because early man had no cake or deserts. Things like that only really popped up with the processed sugar. There was no cake in the stone ages.

Yes - gorillas have a different strategy to the one humans and their ancestors took.
There are generally many solutions to a given problem - somewhere in the past we went down the path of the tribe - having many strong and capable individuals and group co-operation.
I think rather than it being a "trick" - its more likely that we established the behavior first and then "encoded" it in cultural ways - in myth and story etc.
The two things "our nature" and "our culture" are not absolutely separate of course - they feed off and feed into each other.
Gorillas and Chimps have a limited culture too - but of course with humans it has become a dominating force in our development.
ratholin Finally you explained the reason why so many poor working people keep on voting for neocons. They are motivated by fear so they support the feudal lord or the big military leader and they are used to doing it all through history.

43alley Really glad to see you're still uploading! Now that I know you're still here on occasion - I've really got to tell you that (i.e. thank you because), you and Thunderf00t are the reason I count myself as being solidly among the rational, secular, non-believers.
I'll be honest and tell you that I've struggled with faith (and the notion of it) and have never found an expression of it that really connected with me - despite looking for something because "that's what you do" when you grow up being exposed to it. Even when I was young I didn't "believe" the way the truly devout seem to. BUT, I didn't know what to call the way I thought or how to express my disdain for what seemed to me was simply irrational thinking. I couldn't be that smart, why could I see it was crazy if no one else could?
So I felt that maybe I wasn't getting the big picture or maybe my thinking was defective... I think a lot of it was simply wishful thinking - coming to grips with the idea that my being "here" in this world may turn out to simply have been a bug and not a feature...
In the end, I found a collection of like minded thinkers on UA-cam where I learned that maybe I WAS thinking clearly... First it was Thunderf00t with his WDPLAC series but I've also got a special place in my heart for your videos...
In my entire time here on UA-cam, the ABSOLUTE BEST video that really describes this "belief confusion" in a way that I did connect with was your video titled "how I gave up religion."
It's hard to believe that was more than four years ago! But it's like you're pushing every nostalgia button I've got when I see your latest video...
Bottom line: Thank you so much for your time and effort, I hope to see more from you but I am forever indebted to you for what you've shared so far!

Does anyone else think in all seriousness that the plot to Portal 1 was a metaphor for heaven? I mean Portal definitely has some anti-religion undertones. The shortsighted and egotistically insecure behaviors represented in the God's of Darkmatter2525 and NonStampCollector are pretty heavily reflected in the character of Wheatley along with the fact that he actually references the Judeo-Christian God to describe himself a couple times. What I wonder, even though it's obviously very unlikely, is if the first game was at all inspired by this routine.

lol, sorta true, of course, it was really more of the ruler coming up with a way to discourage a younger would be usurper from killing the ruler or his child son when the ruler was too old to enforce his will by his sword arm. But it served to relocate violence, perhaps in ways that allowed technology and civilization to flourish.
