the aoe is caused by the electricity on the ground, it's like torb's lava, there's no way to block it it's not a LoS thing, at least that's what I felt playing with it
For the oneshot to work you have to jump forward halfway thru your hook animation and it'll work. Sometimes you won't even have to melee, your scrapgun will just one shot them

As far as I can tell it's not a one-shot like it used to be where you could kill a tracer before she recalls or blinks, but hopping means the enemy is pulled into a position in the air where they are unable to strafe away from you, meaning you have time to get close enough. Keep W pressed, hook, hop, press forward and fire to melee as the enemy hits the ground. A lot of heroes can save themselves from this, but if they are badly positioned with their abilities on cooldown, it's theoretically effective.

However in the practice range you can test around with it an get a better feel. All that being said tho, the better one shot for hog now is to just hook them into pigpen an shoot em once. Lol

you can set the projectile speed down to test the "destroy before it's deployed" more clearly those most deployables can't be destroyed before they land save sym's turrets so it makes sense pig pen can't be destroyed soon either
So Soldier gets to just run over it and Ball loses his ability to do shit, wonderful. Can't wait to have to look out for yet another deployable before I can engage, like 4 to 5 turrets and a Junkrat trap or a bloody Mei aren't bad enough

Technically Orisa takes the damage from triggering traps, but she breaks it instantly because of movement immunity. It's not just "break it in half".
Also for the tests with reins charge and jq ult, you could have a second enemy activate the trap early to see if they are affected.
