      Cyndi Muth I make videos for the other Khmer ppl like me who forgot how to speak Khmer but want to reconnect with their roots. I don’t know why that angers you. There’s a white guy that lives in Cambodia that speaks fluent khmer. Cambo Vlogs maybe you will enjoy his videos more.

    Aww you and your family are soo lovely! Seeing you guys gathering over at your parents' place for dinner, and got asked if it's a party is like my family too. Since I live further out from them; when I do go over we would have a family feast, and having four other siblings and three of us have kids and husbands plus extra addition of two cousins; one can assume it's a party.
    Kudos to your wife for tolerating prohok. My husband is white and prohok makes him gag. I love the aroma of prohok frying!

      I'm khmer but born in Thailand...we were probably the first wave of khmer people to come to the US in 1978. My mom was pregnant with my brother when we got here. Not too many Cambodians where I live and my mom and dad tried very hard to teach us american ways when we were young, so we could advance in school. You have to remember back then, there was absolutely no support in place. We became americanized very quickly.

      wow soo interesting to me who knew.. Born in Thailand as well. I think we came to cali in 1984.I'm starting to lose my "khmer" since moving to Ohio plus I have no khmer friends. I hope my daughter will be able to speak it since she's mixed race as well lol

      I was thinking the same thing about Khmericans older than me that always have spoken fluent Khmer. I am part of the official 2nd generation [born here], am in my early 20s, am 1 of 3 Cambodian families in the Southeast city in which I live, and have pushed so that I can hold full-fledged all-Khmer conversations with my cousins in Cambodian. I am not fluent to the point that I can talk about politics, economy, or academics, but I can definitely hold my own with conversational Khmer about everyday life things. All of my cousins who were born in SrukKhmer/Thai camps--now 30s-40s years old--all speak fluent Khmer that I don't even think about it anymore. But I guess different households and different generations have undergone separate experiences! Very interesting. Guess I am not as westernized as I thought...

      Hey Guys... my family and I came to the states in 1983. I was around 4 years of age. I was very fortunate that my dad was a teacher back home. He knew how to speak French also. He taught me how to read and write Khmer around 6 years old. He had a routine of waking me up early in the morning before school start and when I got home from school before I did my homework! I hated it! Lol... it was to much...! But all my brother’s and sister’s already knew how so I was next.
      Long story short I was reading and writing fluently by the age of 10. He also taught me Sanskrit . He tried to teach me French but I was like No..... lol. He got really sick and couldn’t teach me anymore and took me to the Khmer temple every Sunday but I was way to advanced. He pass away in 2002 and I’m in my 40s now and can still speak really well but my writing is gone ..!! And my reading is ok! I wish I still continued on but with everyday life I just couldn’t find the time. Thanks 🙏 for the videos I really enjoyed watching them🤗🤗

    Hey Savi, I was just wondering how did you and your mom communicate when you were younger she had to speak khmer to you. I was born in the states and speak khmer and English all my life. I am fluent in both. I have a hard time teaching my son to speak khmer since he was little. My daughter on the other hand has no problem learning it. Maybe its the personality but I feel males don't want to learn as much as females do. I always told my mom please speak khmer to me so I don't forget my language and were my family is from. It will be cool to see your kids that are mix can speak both languages of the parents.
    Well great job on the video anyways. Just showing khmer support.

    • @saviyou
      @saviyou  6 років тому

      I spoke khmer very well when I was young actually had trouble in school band cause I don’t know any English so then my parents only spoke English to me to help me learn and I forgot how to speak khmer!

    Welp...this video has 2 of my favorite food. The simple "Sngaw Chrouk Sach Morn" (Chicken Sour Soup) and Baan Chow. Coincidently I had a craving for Baan Chow a few days ago and went out for it. Those thing are great with lots and lots of Fresh Vegetables. Hey here's a video idea, how about Casey learn to make Baan Chow and you film her first attempt, that'll be fun.

Good for u that u and ur family can speak Khmer.. keep up the good work!! I came to the States when I was 4. My dad was a teacher back home who also spoke French! By the time I was 10 I was already fluent in reading and writing and Sanskrit but this is my Dad and this was his way but not everyone has a teacher at home. Cindy Crawfish I highly doubt his parents was teaching him 2 be more Americanized. That's absurd I never heard such. He is just embarrassed of who he is. Low self-esteem I might say " trying 2 fit in" ur words Cindy Crawfish. .Being accepted in any shape or form is being who U is. If ur trying fit in where u don't belong u fake asf why would u want 2 be someone else. Be true 2 ur identity.. We came in the 1980s my family settled in Atlanta now we all know back then there wasn't many Cambodians. I'm around the same age as he is... I didn't know a lick of English but I learned...I didn't 4get how 2 speak khmer neither..We can adapt 2 any cultures outside but when ur inside ur home around ur family u don't 4get where ur family come from. Cindy crawfish to ur other comment my family escaped the khmer rouge my brother was 2 yrs old when he died in that war.. U found that very funny in ur other comment. U know how many innocent Cambodians were killed u spineless piece of S***. U as fraudulent as he is.. I wonder if his parents 4got how 2 speak KHMER as well 😱😱😱blah blah ( mee lop )

      Sorry you feel that way. I am proud of my roots, but I don't have the luxury of living in a khmer community. I'm not sure what you mean by I don't speak fluent English. The ability to communicate clearly in unbroken english is what got me further than most of my khmer peers. Aside from that, I spent several days in Cambodia with khmer people that don't speak any english. I can listen almost fluently, I just have a hard time formulating the words, so I think my khmer is fine.

      Also want to add that it's the khmer people that think they're better than other khmer that I am ashamed of...in Cambodia they don't act like this at all. They are all welcoming me because I am khmer.

      @@saviyou they would not be so rude and disparaging, that is not the way they behave in Cambodia. I agree 100% with you there.
