    As some others have mentioned, a pit like that can be very dangerous to enter. Lots of people have died entering pits, and die from lack of oxygen. then someone else enters the pit to rescue them, and they die also. At the very least invest in an O2 meter, and lower it into the pit first to make sure there is sufficient oxygen to enter. I worked in the natural gas industry and heard of to many people dying from entering a tank or pit that had insufficient oxygen. there was a contractor cleaning a tank for the company I worked for. He passed out in the tank. His buddy went into the tank to rescue him, and they both died. Never ever go into a pit like that without checking O2.

    Hiring a vactor truck and operator is always a good investment. Worth every penny. We have them at work every day. Vactor trucks can be used for so many things, even cleaning out horse stalls. Horse tracks here even use them to do that. They are also good for vactoring dirt out of excavations when a backhoe cannot get it all.

    Laura is the new Mike Rowe! Love that you show the less pleasant aspects of the operation. Always remember the concept of "opportunity costs" when you can subcontract something to an expert and spend your time doing something else. Also - maybe they should make a Griswolds go Farming movie - "found the problem Clark!. ha ha

    A comment regarding safety in confined spaces...
    At the 8:30 point both you and your dad are down at the bottom of the pit. Was there anyone up above keeping an eye on you? For safety, it's not a good idea for you both to be down there together if there's no one watching from above. Certain chemicals are heavier than air and will collect in the bottom of the pit. A common tragic scenario is for someone to be overcome by such a chemical at the bottom of the pit, and another person goes in after them to rescue them and they are overcome, too. Two people die. You and your dad should talk about a plan that could be used for a pit rescue that does not involve a second person going down in the pit. I know this has probably never happened in the history of your farm and therefore you assume it will never happen in the future, but some night around the dinner table you should at least spend 10 minutes talking it through, just in case of a release of some heavier-than-air chemical that ends up in the bottom of that pit.

    • @dellhell8842
      @dellhell8842 4 роки тому +5

      Agree with your logic. I have left a similar comment. They need to assess the risk here and risk mitigation is not prohibitively expensive. For example, a standard confined gas meter to sweep the area before and during pit/tank entry and a standard escape set which provides a few minutes of clean air to allow self rescue in the event gas emerges during the job should be considered. That and a means of quick escape at all times (minimally a ladder) with one person always outside as a watcher as you suggest.

      @@onazram1 I do not think anyone is criticising, just offering friendly advice. In my case, it's based on 40 years experience working in agriculture and industry and studying EU and US confined space regulations and managing compliance to same. Confined spaces are perhaps one of the most deceptive of hazards as the risk is often not apparent as it is with say working at heights. Even the term 'confined space' is somewhat misleading as the space does not need to be particularly enclosed or confined to pose a risk from toxic gases for example, particularly those gases that are heavier than air.

    • @joefudd
      @joefudd 3 роки тому

      I agree. We are required to use/wear TMX meters to monitor for H2S and O2 deficiency. Everyone who does this work should when entering a confined space like this. H2S is a killer.

    • @joefudd
      @joefudd 3 роки тому +1

      @@dellhell8842 I work in the sewer and wastewater treatment industry. You are spot on. H2S will blind your olfactory nerves within seconds and you will lose your sense of smell and can no longer smell the H2S. If it's over 200 ppm it will make one pass out and possibly die. We have had this happen at my workplace several times over the years. It's no joke.

I imagine you are the same age as my daughter. I first learned about you from the story they did on KNOPTV and found your channel. It has been so much fun to learn more about farming. So many interesting things I didn't know having grown up in the city. My husband comes from a family of farmers and my step-dad did as well, but they have others who now own their farms. I love your videos and getting to see the country and state that I love so much. Ready for my next visit home. I hope you continue to do well and many people will learn about farm life. :)

    Back in the 70's we had a bin type corn dryer that had a 15" high space at the bottom where the hot air blew under the whole bin. Corn would leak down there and turn to the same stinking rotten crap that you were digging out with your shovel. We used a garden hoe to rake it out as far as we could reach but the bin was 20' wide so that left me with a very nasty job. Since I was low man on the totem pole and the only one skinny enough to crawl on his belly in the 15" space under the bin where we had just hoed out rotten corn; I had to crawl with my arms out in front of my head with a hoe to rake the rotten corn from the opposite side of the bin so we could work it to where we could reach it from the outside entrance. Crawling in there was a slow process and there was only room enough between the floor supports to have my arms extended forward over my head; no room to wiggle that much. When I got about 15' under the dryer, I hit a big nest of yellow jackets and had to crawl backwards as fast as I could to escape. I got stung about ten times before I got out. That was painful but i lived to spray the yellow jackets and finish the job. It was the dirtiest job i can remember having to do on the farm.

    OSHA would probably require you to have a blower going (ventilation), plus an attachment (harness) for the person in the hole, for safety. But this is what happens on a farm. Not the Big City!

    • @joefudd
      @joefudd 3 роки тому +3

      It's the law here in my state. Tripod above the hole to winch out the worker, worker wears a harness with cable attached, wears an ITX or TMX meter on them, and a copus blower supplying fresh air into the hole. Stirring up rotted organic material (anerobic/septic) releases plumes of H2S and can overwhelm someone instantly.

    I'm imaging this is like a scenario I ran into a few times when I worked as a diesel mechanic. Worked on garbage trucks... In South Texas... in August. Packer blade cylinder breaks. Requires you to enter the back of the garbage truck where all the rotting garbage "juice" is. Sour milk, rotten eggs, diaper contents, etc. is what "garbage juice" is made of. Also, the maggots would be so thick, you generally had to shovel them out of the back before working on it. So, that's what I'm imagining when I see/hear you talk about this.

CO2, and other naturally occurring heavy gases collects in pits, trenches, basements, etc., so ventilating the pit with a powerful fan helps reduce confined spaces issues. The farm on which I grew up had a grain elevator and pit so I know the smell. However, we also had a cattle feed lot. In my opinion the smell when cleaning out the lot after months of "buildup" is worse than rotted grain.

    There are lots of gross stinky jobs in this world.
    I worked in a large hospital that had it's own industrial sized laundry. Soiled ( poopy linen and everything else ) plus heat and poor ventilation was nasty.
    We also had grease interceptors on the drain lines from the restaurant and yeah lots of maggots and horrible grease and stuff were in them and needed cleaning out.
    I would have thought the worst job would have to do with the pigs and getting rid of liquid manure. Maybe you can show us how the pig barns operate sometime.

    Though not a lot, there is a noticeable amount of corn deflecting off it and ending up on the ground, and subsequently the boot pit.

      @@patdaugherty7978 exactly correct! The man in must wear a harness and there must be a tripod winch above and the cable attached to the entrant's harness. He needs to wear a gas monitor (H2S and O2) and have a trained top man always watching and operating the winch. It would be best to use a Copus blower with the duct hose to supply fresh air into the pit.

    Do you ever have gas from the rotting organic matter accumulate at the bottom of these pits or tanks? In particular, when this matter is freshly disturbed? If so, it could be lethal to someone going down there. I know the pit you show is well vented on top but sometimes these gases are heavier than air and sit at the bottom. Dropping a standard confined space gas detector into the space first and then keeping it with you in there until the job is done while ensuring you have a means of being monitored and rescued in the event you are overcome by the gas would be best safety practice for this. In industry, this is a legal requirement in many countries. In farming, the viability of complying with all of this is more difficult but fatalities do happen from gases in confined spaces in farms. If I was dealing with your infrastructure, I would invest in a gas meter if you have not already, stay safe.
