    Bad idea for a repair. Hours of work to repair a one dollar fitting. Broken PVC fittings are cheap, fast, and easy to replace. This takes far longer than fixing it the right way and this may still leak. I was a landscape contractor for years and did these repairs as part of my job. The only situation this makes sense is if replacement is impossible due to access, like the pipe is partly embedded in concrete, then this may be the easiest fix. This is clever but impractical. Also, this fitting has a portion gouged out forming a hole, but the fitting is not cracked. For most broken PVC fitting repairs, the fitting is cracked as well, and this will not work on a cracked fitting. This is like trying to fix a burned out light bulb by replacing the filament instead of buying a new bulb.

      Styrofoam is nothing more than polystyrene and you eat off it all the time. Half your groceries come packed in the stuff. It is harmless. Acetone is an organic compound that quickly dilutes in water and that amount of exposure is meaningless to your health. You are in much more danger from the pipes themselves, which is still negligible.

    I see a lot of people asking what liquid he used on this repair. It was super glue. Super glue melts styrofoam, and the resulting mix, when dried, is structurally stronger then just the super glue by itself. Also, since this repair was going to an outdoor water source, likely for the yard, I would use this method myself.

    • @tipsunknow
      @tipsunknow  9 місяців тому +6

      Thank you for sharing that information! You are absolutely right. In the repair shown in the video, super glue was used, and when combined with styrofoam, it creates a stronger bond than just using super glue alone. This method can be particularly useful for outdoor water sources as it provides added durability and resistance to weather conditions. I appreciate your insight and contributions to the discussion. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask. Thank you for being part of our UA-cam community!

      Thanks for sharing that valuable information! Using super glue to repair and reinforce styrofoam is a clever technique, especially for outdoor water sources like in the yard. The combination of super glue and styrofoam creates a stronger bond that can withstand environmental factors and ensure a more durable repair.
      It's great to see how people in the community share their tips and experiences with different repair methods. DIY projects often involve creative solutions, and this one seems like a fantastic option for the situation.

      Do I understand you correctly? You say that you painted your house with a color that normally fades, then brushed on a acetone melted Styrofoam glaze, which is invisible with no weirdness added to the appearance of the paint job. Then, the paint job has showed zero signs of any fading or other degradation for 10 years?
      1. Is this correct?
      2. What color?
      3. What minor appearance changes happened immediately after using the Styrofoam glaze, and what minor changes in appearance happened over the next few years?
      4. How much did it cost you extra per 100 sq feet, or 3x3 meter squared.
      5. Where was this house? What is the latitude and climate?
      6. To which direction was the front of the house facing - North, South, East, or, West?
      7. Did you leave a control area (unglazed) no treated on the critical sides of the house that you are impressed with, and how did those areas fade?
      8. What was the exact brand + grade + paint sheen of paint that you used before you Styrofoam glazed it? If you can tell us too about the chemistry, it might be helpful (acrylic, vinyl).
      9. What is the history of the the past paint jobs? Color, fade, etc.
      10. What surface preparation tools (psi, tips, chemicals, sanding tools, speed of the tool, grit and resin type of the sandpaper, primer steps? This question is the least relevant, since the surface preparation is not going to affect the fade of the pigment. Only chalking paints, over a chalking finish, might fade less due to a slower chalking rate. However, chalking paints have been discontinued for 2 or 3 decades, because people did not understand that chalking eliminates peeling at the expense of limiting the paint job to 10 years and chalk washing down onto the foundation or lower brick. A chalking paint will develop gradual ghosting as it ages. It requires tsp and a focused big power washer for the repaint to get all of the necessary chalk off before recoating, every 10 years. But this avoids a basket case of paint chips and 3 of blasting followed by 3 days of sanding, followed by 3 days of resurfacing with a primer and spot patching, every 14,18, 21 or 28, years, depending on how much condensation comes from inside the house (insulation, oil primed interior walls, bathroom ventilation, gutter leaks, plumbing leaks, storms on the windows in the winter, vent plugs in the siding) .

      @@user-hg9cq3it2z you are asking, I believe, if his glaze makes the house any cooler in the summer. In engineering science terms, we are talking about emissivity, which is the rate for which a paint absorbs and releases infrared radiation, which will impact the summer and winter temperature gained or lost.
      His Styrofoam is melted and will not offer the traditional Styrofoam insulation, which is not due to the polymer, but rather the air bubbles trapped in the traditional Styrofoam polymer. This is why a huge piece of Styrofoam melts into a tiny amount of Styrofoam glue. Mostly air.
      My bet is that the paint color and sheen will affect this. The micro layer of Styrofoam glaze is not thick enough to add significant conduction insulation. It would change the sheen. In theory, a Shiney paint will not absorb as much radiation, but will also not release it. What I have observed is that in the summer, the Shiney paint is going to be overwhelmed by the hot sun and cannot release it quickly enough, and the water based paints begin to self strip in a matter of minutes after the glossy paint is applied over a tight flat paint on a hot direct sunny summer day. This leads to a ton of instant bubbles the size of usa quarters all over the house side. The Styrofoam glaze should definitely change the sheen, but I don't know, because I have yet to try it out... I might try it out on a dormer side, where the paint sits against the ice and snow and usually does not last more than 5 years at the most. And isn't that visible and I can play with a pattern for the control against the experiment.
      Will need to research the polymers in Styrofoam.

    Doctors use super glue to hold skin together if you have a cut, and you drink out of styrofoam cups so I wouldn’t think it’s too toxic. Copper pipes often have lead soldered connections and many older homes still have copper plumbing., that is something to think about. So long as this fix holds well, it should be fine. An old plumber once taught me to tightly wrap bacon around the cracks and then heat it with the torch. Once the bacon is fully cooked the leak will stop.

    • @tipsunknow
      @tipsunknow  3 місяці тому

      While using bacon to seal leaks might sound unconventional, it's not a recommended method for fixing plumbing issues. Heating bacon with a torch could pose safety risks, and bacon itself isn't designed for use as a sealant. It's always best to use appropriate materials and techniques recommended for plumbing repairs to ensure safety and effectiveness

    This method could be applied to other situations. I have just broken a side mirror on a golf cart. It broke at the plastic part of the mounting. I used epoxy to put it back in place and I wonder if it could be bolstered using superglue and polystyrene foam. The point where the joint snapped off was structurally weak.

    • @tipsunknow
      @tipsunknow  8 місяців тому

      Certainly, you can try combining super glue and polystyrene foam to reinforce the strength and durability of the connection. It may help keep the side mirror stable and safer. However, be sure to carry out this process carefully and meticulously to ensure the stability and safety of the side mirror. Good luck with the repair!
