In this video I’m going to show you how we resurfaced a concrete porch with a troweled concrete overlay. First we pressure washed the surface and then etched it with acid. Then we applied a slurry coat of Westcoat grout in a light gray color. This coat will become the grout line color in the finished product. We came back the next day and taped a slate pattern on the concrete. Once the slate stencil was on the concrete, we troweled another coat of Westcoat grout in a dark gray color on top of the tape. Once the concrete overlay was dry, we removed the tape pattern and applied two coats of Westcoat solvent based clear sealer.

I've been watching dozens of videos on how to resurface my patio and this is by far the best one! I'm definitely going to do it this way! That came out fantastic! I live in Virginia Beach so this is perfect for our project as you address the weather and the best times to do the resurfacing/drying time/etc.
Thanks! Glad it’s been helpful. 👍🏻
Thanks for the extra tips in this one. They're invaluable.
Thank you for watching. 👍🏻 happy to help.
another great video Tim! we all appreciate the detail and determination you put into every job!
Thanks Paul!
Can you list the materials used in this video
Great job on the application and on the video production which is not easy and taken for granted by most. I have done a few stamped concrete projects that looked like this. I have a driveway and pool deck that would be good to do this overlay on in SW Florida thanks for the videos. Well done.
Nice job Tim!
Thanks Mike!
Great video Tim!!!
Thanks Jeff!
Awesome video
Beautiful
Soooo informative. Well done Tim 👍🏼 can’t believe you offer courses that are EVEN MORE informative than this 🤯 Great video tutorial. So many good pointers we can implement
Thanks Nathan! Always appreciate the encouragement. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@TimDCVA that’s because I know how hard it is to do the work + film the work - except I don’t know how to edit so
You’re like a rockstar in my books lol
Definitely like the trowel instead of the sprayed version. Like the texture way mkre
One suggestion: Lift the column bases up and resurface, then slide the bases back down afterwards.
🔥🔥🔥 the goat
Haha. Idk about that. Thank you! 🙌🏼
Good video
awesome information, such a nice presentation of your skills. Thanks so much for sharing ,from .Olde world Tile Setters
Thank you!
hi Tim, thank you for the videos. They are really giving me new thoughts about how to repair and redecorate my outdoor walkway. There is one thing I may need your kind assistance with : I have to broaden and resurface my very old walkway first so they could be flat enough. Is it possible if I use the light grey color concrete to do the step then I just follow up with the taping and dark layers afterwards? Please advise. Thank you in advance ! 😊
Hi Tim, I watch some of the these videos sometimes just for a laugh. I use the same products as you (mostly, not a fan of lacquer sealer in the south) and do somethings a bit different, but good job. One thing that would speed this up for you a lot is; there are companies out there that make the grout tape with 4" increment marks!
Thanks for the suggestion. 👍🏻
Amazing
Thanks!
Thank you for the well done video I have a question, what type of tape do you use
would like if u talk to the square footage of the project, number of overlay bags, primer, acid, tape type. pricing of materials would be wonderful as well. like how u explained the cost of the pressure washer.
Hey Tim,
I've watched this video several times now to take in as much information as possible - I'm really impressed by your work and the variety of projects you tackle.
I'd love to hire you for our 550sqf patio but you're kinda far away from Texas. I'm a professional home owner and I've done both tile and concrete work before - so I'd like to give it a shot.
If you don't mind me asking - why did you use TC-5 as grout coat and then TC-2 on top? Is it because you wanted a difference in structure between grout and 'tile'? And second - westcoat gives a coverage between 100-200sqf per bag for tc-5 and 100-350sqf for tc-2 - in your experience, how much can you cover with a bag using the method in the video above?
Thanks a lot in advance. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Best,
Michael
Love the look and the video. Do you know of any company in Albuquerque that can do this work for us?
Can you use rubber texture mats for this job, being so thin after troweling? Not the ones you step on like for stamped concrete, but thin ones that you can use roller to imprint? Thin layer of overlay will set pretty quick, so maybe sections of 3 feet wide and then move further?
Thank you
great video what kind of tape are u using didn't find it in the favorite tools
Question, if I’m doing a concrete overlay over the concrete do I need to add the grout on top of that before the overlay or will the new overlay work
7:10
Troy deserves a raise
Haha. He’s a smart guy. He’s always coming up with stuff like that.
Great job! Have you ever had any luck spraying the sealer? We normally roll ours too, but I'm trying to get similar results with spraying.
I don’t really like to spray sealers. Jeremy at Floor Rescue sprays a lot. Look him up… @floorrescue on IG. I’m sure he would be able to help.
Hey Tim I install decorative concrete for the last 13 years in the Caribbean, I watch all your videos, I thank you for them. One thing I'm going to ask here, is I didn't see you mist the floor slightly for the trowel coat, also I usually lock down my tape so that the mist coat does not lift tape and there is no bleed under tape from different color trowel coat
What is lock down
What size are the bords
Wow! Thanks for this video! Does etching help if i have a new solvent based sealer over my concrete?
Thanks! No etching won’t help with sealed concrete. You need to remove the sealer first.
Could you do this over plywood in a small interior room?
I finally got a chance to apply the kind of floor for the first time.. didn’t turn out to bad! Thanks for the tips.. I did want to ask though, does that squeegee trowel ever leave red marks on the floor? I was having that problem and it got a bit annoying.
Hi. Nice. I’d love to see the project. @timdcva on IG.
Weve never have any issues with the magic trowel leaving behind color. What brand did you use?
@@TimDCVA I actually posted it on IG. First time I used a sprayer. Ricko8a. The trowel I used was a marshaltown with an adjustable pitch.
I just checked it out. The project looked great. 👍🏻👍🏻
how well will this hold up to freeze-thaw cycle in up state new york
Use a hawk on the sides
Awesome job! Just one question, how come you chose to trowel the material over just using the squeegee method just like the primer?
Thanks!
The trowel leaves behind a smoother & more attractive looking texture than the rubber blade.
Im new to this but without grinding the concrete its prone to pealing. I believe its like paining a car without sanding back the original paint.
Great video, new subscriber. Quick question, when mixing the cement grout if you don’t add any color to it does it turn regular cement /white color light gray ? And can you add acid stain afterwards before removing the tape to have the variation of color from the stain?
Of course I’ll be taking your course too! 😊
It’s white if you don’t add color.
We always deal with color bleeding under tape so we don’t usually stain it before we pull tape.
An easier method would be to make the grout line mix a little darker or lighter than the slate…. And then stain it after you pull the tape.
Question: can this be done on concrete that’s already stained?
Hey! I'm in the DMV area. Could you let us know the approximate cost to do this porch just to get an idea how much something like this is? Great job!!
Hi. It really depends where you live. Usually something like this costs between $6-$8 per square foot. Fill out the contact form on our webpage for an exact quote.
Hi Tim. These overlay finishes look fantastic. We have a similar front porch slab (100 yr old) that I would like to do something similar. But we live in Western Pennsylvania & I've read/heard that cementitious overlays do not last in our freeze/thaw climate. This slab is covered from above and the sides but I'm still worried. Also, there is the snow and ice and salt. Any thoughts? Thanks
Thanks! I think they do fine in that climate as long as your concrete is in decent shape.
What brand or product do you when you tape for the grout line and how many inches?
Hi Tim, with the acid.. Are you starting at 85% pure and then what dilution ratio do you use? I hope your having a great day 🙂
I’m not sure the percentage of acid. We just get whatever muriatic acid Lowes or Home Depot sells… and then we add about 5-7 parts water to 1 part acid.
I actually refer to use H&C etching solution because it’s less toxic. I think that’s diluted 1:1 with water.
What were the dimensions of the two cutout squares
What kind of tape is this????
What material do you use to spray
awesome video, what kind of tape is that?
Strapping tape. There is a link to buy it in the description of this video.
Hey Tim great job, is the cement modifier mixed is water and polymer?
Thanks!
Cement modifier is high solids acrylic polymer… and we add water to it.
@@TimDCVA OK thanks alot that was helpful.
Happy to help. 👍🏻
Is this material good on driveway and harsh weather conditions?
Yes it does well in Virginia.
Patio has cracks and chips, what’s better, overlay or tiles or replace entirely?
It depends how old and worn out it is. Chips aren’t a big deal. Cracks can sometimes be hidden in grout lines of a pattern. If there are a lot of cracks I would lean towards replacing it.
What do you do about control joints with the slate pattern? I’ve got a tiny 200 sqft diy job I’m going to attempt
And actually, where can I purchase west coat products near Austin tx?
I’m not sure. Just contact them through their website. I’m sure they can point you in the right direction.
We always honor control joints. We usually clean them out or RE-cut them after we apply the overlay.
I incorporate those joints with the pattern
How can I get an estimate from you
where do you get Westcoat products locally?
Call Westcoat and ask them who their closest dealer is.
So I would like to DIY this process, I can’t find concrete to use that is for DIY, my area is 211 square feet, I can’t get a contractor to come out, I was told job is too small. Where can I buy the concrete from?
What area are you in?
@@TimDCVA , Northwest Ga near Acworth
DM me on IG. I can offer a few suggestions. @timdcva
@@TimDCVA hi sorry one last question, if using this west coat product can we use the hopper method as in the other video? I was able to find a distributor here
Yes you can.
How thick was it when it's added? I want to do it in my California room concrete but I wasn't sure how thick/high will be added
It’s about 1/8” thick. It usually doesn’t interfere with most doors.
What kind of tape do you use ?

Not sure why you would tell every other contractor and customer on the planet how to do a trade that most in the trade spent years developing our craft so we could make a living out of it. You don't get plumbers and electricians showing everyone tricks of the trade so people can wire up there own house. Where we live you need to be a licensed contractor to install these products as they can be dangerous, a good tradesman can make it look easy but its not! If a contractor or customer stuffs it up, its a big job to fix. If you want to sell training courses locally in your area, thats one thing but keep the trade secrets to yourself mate. If you want your ego stroked get it from your customers or show before and afters of your work. This is just selling out everyone in the trade.
Nicole,
Seems a little harsh but I am trying to understand where your view is coming from as well. But I thought that maybe I could offer some points that may be insightful.
Fist is you are correct in that watching this video shows much of the technique and methods used to complete this project start to finish. And it also shows how much time and manpower is involved to accomplish this task. I’m not sure about you but it is not often that I am doing a project on my own property and I have a host of well trained craftsman that volunteer to help for their whole weekend and show up early all at the same time and stay all day on their hands and knees. That is why so many people hire contractors and professionals. DIY means “Do It Yourself” and as soon as you take the “yourself” out of the equation then you are simply doing it. And with the exception of Nike, I don’t think anybody recommends that to be the best approach.
Another thing to consider is that most people who hire contractors and professionals also understand they will get a professional outcome and if they don’t get that they will not pay for it until that outcome is produced. It is the built in insurance policy that comes with hiring out the skilled trades.
Speaking of skilled trades makes me remember to touch on your “trade secrets” comment. I feel, (my opinion) that anybody confident enough to take on this project already has a basic understanding of how to accomplish it in the first place. So would it be safe to say that we are not witnessing the spillage of trade secrets but instead we just watched an excellent video production of manufacturers publicly available print directions? Excellent and High quality editing I might add.
Next is that I jumped on your channel Ms Cullen and I noticed how much you seem to enjoy food and cooking shows and videos. Have you had a chance to reach out to to any of those hosts and request that they discontinue giving away trade secrets because of the affect it could possibly have on professional chefs and restaurant owners world wide? I wonder if shows like “This Old House” or “Bob Vila” have any thoughts on this subject since they have been making video productions showing the public how to do things on their homes for over 50 years combined.
Also, how exactly is a homeowner calling a professional to repair a project that they attempted and botched taking work away from professionals? Is that not the perfect example of a professional being given an opportunity to estimate and perform a project for an agreed upon payment amount? Why does it make a difference whether the project was already attempted and how does that change what the professional or contractor is able to charge for their work? If it is harder to fix and then complete it correctly then the price would be higher logically.
Last, I also live in a state which requires licensing. business licenses, contractors licenses, reselling licenses, licenses to have employees in the first place, bonds, insurances, etc.. I know because I am a small business owner with many of those licenses including a contractors license. And From this video I am now able to tell my clients about other options they have in their needs which in turn creates more work for these professionals and skilled artisans.
The way I see it, this is a promotion of not only his company and crews abilities but also of the craft itself and great advertising for all people with shared skills.
But I am open to discussion and I invite you to treat all skilled artisans with the same demeanor.
Thoughts?
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 thank you for taking time to write that. 🙌🏼
@@TimDCVA I think we have all spent enough time fighting. Let’s get back to being able to empathize and respectfully disagree. It seems like there may be a possibility where either Nicole herself or someone she knows or as close to it’s been negatively affected by a flooded market. Perhaps, perhaps not. Either way I think your videos are excellent and I’m glad I found your channel. Let me know how I can help promote you and I’m happy to do so.
Nick, c'mon now. This is what the best of UA-cam folks do!
Most of us like to learn from the best. While we may "stuff it up", the process of doing something nice yourself for your own home and leaning along the way is something very special for the DIY community!
I like to get up every morning seeing my own work and what I learned come to life! Tim is just as happy to share his work as he is happy to do his work with and for others. That's a quality that most trade experts lack.
what kind of tape are you using?
Filament tape.
what size?
1/2 inch?@@TimDCVA
@123trader I think it was 1/2. We occasionally use 3/4 too… but pretty sure this one was 1/2.
