Mike: great work, I appreciate your attention to detail and product knowledge. Thanks for the thorough video! I came across it after I bought one of your stencils. The stencil I bought was intricate and very well made. Hi. We have purchased our water based base coat and stencil coat and getting ready to start. Our only remaining problem is finding a sealer once completed. We are unable to purchase the one you have used in Australia and none of the companies here make water based sealers to go over the paint on the concrete. In researching what you have used it appears to be a water based external timber sealant. Is that correct? Given we have about 120sq meters we don’t want to buy the wrong thing cost it is going to be very expensive. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sandra
Hi Sandra, The idea of using a water based sealer is to minimize the yellowing that occurs with with traditional oil based sealers. What you are looking for is a water based spar varnish. Just any water based exterior clear coat that has UV protection should work. It doesn't necessarily need to be for concrete. I hope this helps!
I did that to make my driveway, went to HD and bought a big 1/4 thick rubber plastic where is 6 feet wide and what ever long you want, bought 3 pieces for doing my driveway. Bought a concrete stone the shaped that I like Put it on the plastic and cut the shape of the stone with a real good box cutter, tell the person at HD what your doing and ask her for the plastic where it would be. and there I was with my home made stencil.
Love this idea! My questions is though, even with your poly, if you want to clean the patio over time would you still use a pressure washer? Wouldn’t that destroy the stencil?
Absolutely gorgeous. Best stenciled concrete video ever 💖Diamant design. Are you able to please let me know what size stencil you used and if you ship to Canada? Hi Greg. Awesome video. Easy to follow and informative! Thank you! Just purchased a stencil from y'all for my concrete front porch and stumbled across this video. I am curious to know if you recommend doing 2-3 coats of the primer (similar to your recommendation for interior projects). This wasn't specified for outdoor so wanted to find out your thoughts here. Many thanks!
Hi Rachel, thank you for those kind words! Primer is always a great idea to add before base coating and stenciling, especially 2-3 coats. If your patio is outdoor, you can get away with 2 coats of exterior paint as well!
Hi, You simply cut the stencil so it lays flat and more easily fits into where it's needed. But I do that at the end of the project when I've already used the stencil for all the full prints. Hope that helps!
We wouldn't recommend power washing a stenciled patio, but a hose will clean it off any dirt! Stenciled floors can last years. It's all about having a good top coat, like Spar Varathane polyurethane to protect it!
I used the Varathane Spar Urethane water based and it DID NOT seal my finished stenciled front porch (which took me 10 hours to complete). The finish paint is coming off simply by using my fingernail. I would not recommend the Varathane. I called Rust Oleum and they told me I could remove it using a wood finish remover but it would damage my paint job. All I can say is UGHHHHH!!! I have a plaque in my office that says, "Life is all about Plan B." So what I plan on doing is hopefully talk to someone who knows they're stuff at Sherwin Williams and get another opinion. After that, I plan to buy furniture pads for furniture I plan to put on the front porch. I already ordered a large area rug to place on the high traffic area. And then I plan to ENJOY it regardless.
You overlapped onto the first star with the stencil, when you moved to the 2nd one. So, I assume you let the first one dry? That seems like a lot of time if I have to let each one dry between?
Hi Beverly! We waited until the first one was completely dry before moving onto the next. A major reason we recommend stenciling with paint in a flat sheen is because the dry time is super fast! It only takes about 1-2 minutes to dry:)
How often do you need to respray the sticky on the back of the stencil please? I am in Australia and love the stencil you have used. We have an area of about 8 x 12 meters to do. How many of the 16 x 16 stencils would you suggest we purchase and can we purchase from you? Do you ship to Australia ?
Hi, You add spray adhesive when you need it. It depends on how much you use and the surface you're stenciling on. You should get at least 4 or 5 prints if not more! Could be 10. But when you notice that it's lost its tack, mist another coat on. That's a big space. I'd get 2 or 3. It will just make the project go faster. I'm sure we ship to Australia! Just go to www.cuttingedgestencils.com Good luck!

Hi, Sorry to hear that you struggled. It really comes down to a few tips and tricks. I recommend a flat sheen base coat, maybe some spay adhesive and most importantly, do not have too much paint on your brush or roller. Too much paint will always result in unwanted bleed. After you load your roller, off load some of the paint on a paper towel and then build up your paint coverage slowly. We have many other videos that outline these steps. Maybe try again?
what should you do if the concrete is rough and the stencil doesn't sit flush and causes lots of paint bleeding. Is there a sealer that can fill in the rough surface to make the surface easier to stencil? Thank you !
Hi, It's tricky to stencil rough surfaces but they do make a trowelable driveway sealer that fills in the low spots and cracks of a driveway. You could use that first and then base coat and stencil. Good luck!
Hi, That's strange. Concrete is usually very porous and the paint sticks great. Perhaps using an adhesive primer like STIX would help. Always make sure the surface is clean and dry before painting. Sometimes you can slightly dilute the paint so it seeps into the concrete as well.

Hi A J! We understand this large scale DIY stenciling project may not be for everyone. We like to compare the price of tile stencils, brushes, paint etc. as being a lot more cost effective/time effective than dealing with a construction team to remove and replace concrete/outdoor tiles. At the end the satisfaction of completing a project like this feels great! As for the corner measuring you are referring to, this example if for the people that would like the whole tile stencil pattern to fit in each corner. When it comes to concrete patios, you can start wherever you want! When trying to align the stencil properly, do you have to wait until the paint dries?

Do you need to seal the patio before you use the 'ben' exterior paint?
Nope! it's good to let the paint soak into the patio :)
I read somewhere that painted concrete gets particularly slick when wet. Do you find this to be the case? And if so, how do you counteract that issue?
You can add shark grip to your sealer. It may sparkle a bit but it gives a slip resistant texture.
NICE !
