QUICK UPDATE! The stencil at 0:50 has an error that was pointed out by a viewer! The top picture has the head facing towards the right and bottom has the head facing towards the left. Please mirror either the top or bottom image on your block of wood please! See the next couple seconds where I go into detail of how it sits on the wood for further clarification.
Sorry about that!
These are incredible. I just started carving since when I’m a dad one day I want this to be something they’ll remember- that their dad could make toys appear out of “nowhere”. If you ever were to do a cat, that would be really cool. Appreciate you, man.
I agree, a cat would be great!!
Hooray! Now my little fox will have a little bird friend =)
Yooo I've gotten recently into wood carving and I've been watching your videos. I've already done the Bear and Fox and I'm so proud of myself for them. Thank you for uploading videos and I'm super excited to do this one. 😁
Awesome!! I'm glad others are enjoying these little projects :)
Thank you very much for making these videos, I was always interested in carving but I never had someone to teach me, I am finally starting and enjoying this process a lot You have good projects and you are an amazing teacher
Thank you! I'm glad others are enjoying these videos as well :)
This is the best UA-cam Chanel in the world
Thank you!
You are welcome!!!
Just want to say thank you. Today I started my first whittling project, which is your little bird design. I followed you step by step, and the final product is amazing. Though I could not execute as well as you did. I found the wedge cut extremely hard, which I often do around five times to cut what you did once. And the whole project took me maybe five hours. But overall it is very satisfying. Thank you.
You get faster with time :) I also am using a wicked sharp knife and softer air dried basswood than what most people buy.
Yayyyyy another video :D I just got some beavercraft tools a couple days ago and carved a cat, it surprisingly turned out fine for the first thing I've ever carved. I'm gonna do this now!
I wanted to try carving for a long time, but that sound hard for me and I thought I will need a lot of different knifes for a good result (I'm a student and don't have regular job right now), but your videos gave me the feeling that there are a lot of things I can do with just one knife, it isn't that hard and gave me inspiration for carving simple animal figures. My first knife is going to arrive soon and I'm super excited to try your tutorials. Thank you!
You're welcome!! I find that you can do quite a bit with just a single good knife :)
How very cute, thank you! 😃 I can't wait until my carving utensiles are arriving!
You're welcome! Hope you have fun!
Thank you for these great videos. I would be interested in a fish carving to if your looking for ideas.
Always looking for more ideas! Thank you!
Never thought I’d like this as a hobby but here I am, and these are great thanks!
Thanks for your projects and Inspiration. For me as absolute beginner perfect 😀 my girl wishes a dinosaur maybe can you Show me a easy one 😃 thy
Yeppers, a dino or two are on the list to do!
@@CarvingisFun thats nice 😀 i m looking forward to this Video 😄
Great video Brian. If you’re looking for ideas, I’d love to learn how to do a basic wood spirit.
Keep up the good work! 👍
Thanks!
A wood spirit is on the list to do, and will probably get done after my bunny and gnome tutorial.

On the half way I have made so many mistakes I couldn't follow your instructions properly. So I had to improvise a little bit. Now I see the problems with it. Wings are too small, v-cuts are awful (I used my knife to scrape the wood out). But I LOVE it! Thanks for the tutorial
this tiny guy looks like a fancy pigeon! I'll def try this template, looks easy and looks cute in the end :)
Nice tutorial! I like that little bird. Thanks for sharing your carve.
Hey, just wanna say a big thank you. U got me into whittling. Ive already done the fox, the bear and this one. My baby girl (2yo) is in love with those new toys, so am i. Keep going the good work !
PS : im french and i like the fact u show measurements in metric system ;)
You're welcome!!
Great video, can’t wait to try making my own bird!
I think I’m binge watching you today but I had a migraine today, not good. I want to carve but that’s not a good idea 🙁 Dude, I’m watching UA-cam with sunglasses on! But thanks for all the vids! I already ordered a flexcut set like you…🙏🏽👍🏽🙋🏻♀️Mia
Thank you for this! I’ve done your dog fox and bear before, so I’m excited to try out making a bird!
My wood whittling kit is coming in today!! I’m excited to carve this and the fox!!
Yay! much fun ahead :)
I’ve watched a couple of you videos and I’m considering starting carving, I’m definitely going to enjoy it and hopefully I’ll be good :)
Nice! I'm sure you will be great :)
I didn't ended up with what I thought but I still made a nice bird , thank you
Sounds like you made something that is entirely yours!! To me that is a big success :)
Yes thank u can’t wait to try this one
Hope you enjoy!
Cool bird. Thanks, I’ll carve a few of these.
Make your own little flock of birds 🐦🐦🐦🐦🐦
Круто и красиво. Из дерева создать чудо... Это мастерство. Спасибо)
You're welcome!
AAAAA BIIIRRRRDDDDDD AAAAAAAAAA
i have to get myself some tools so i can finally start maing amazing stuff like you
thank you!
I love it! I should try it out sometime
Would you please do a tutorial on how to whittle a trout or bass fish?
Yeppers, I have some fishy ideas on my list 😀
Very nice tutorial. Great job 👍👍✌
Thank you!
Hi. Love your work. I'm really curious, have you ever tried to carve something without drawing up any previous lines? I usually like to draw line art by letting the drawing take shape on its own and was wondering if you could do the same carving.
Yeppers and thats how most of my tutorials start, as a freeform carving. I then refine my work and make it easier to carve and teach after several iterations
love so much when u upload
Hey Bryan this is a fan from Spain :) Could you maybe make a little turtle? Thanks!
Howdy!
Yep, I have a turtle on the list to do. It's going to be a little bit before I make it as I have a few projects lined up before it.
Sure, I’ll be happy to wait no matter how long :) I haven't bought any materials yet, as I am a newbie and scared to cut myself badly from what I’ve read...
Some slice resistant gloves and practical experience will help build confidence. You could always start with soap carving to get the feel for the motions.
Just wanted to say that the top part at 0:50 faces in the wrong direction. I noticed it when I tried to whittle the bird.
Ps: Love your videos, you are doing great work!
Wow, that is a big error on my end. The top picture has the head facing right and the bottom picture has the head facing left. Thank you for catching that!
You should do a video on how to make a duck! I know it’s similar, but the beak is a little bigger and rounder… I’m having a hard time visualizing it
Yeppers, its on my list!
@@CarvingisFun dude that’d be awesome! Just picked this up as a hobby with the intent of making a duck
I love these videos so much!! 😭😭
Thank you!
Man, did I miss anything or you've always been close to 50k subs?
Cute little birds, well done!
Thanks!
The channel kinda went a little crazy during the holidays :) My beginners guide and fox tutorial got kinda big all of a sudden!
Ha! Thats what I thought. Well congrats man. Well deserved.
Let’s go! It’s finally out!
thank you for this! it really helped me :)
you're welcome!
I got recommended your fox video earlier, loved it, and now I have a beginner’s kit set to arrive next week! I’m excited to start (and, admittedly, a little nervous that I won’t have any talent for it)!
I was planning on messing around with a few pieces to get the feel of things before I try making anything with a concrete shape. Once I do get there, though, would you say that the little bird and fox and similar things are simple enough to jump straight into?
I love your videos by the way, they’re very informative!
Thanks! The bird and fox will be a great place to start carving once you get the feel for things.
I got into whittling last week and I started whittling with the moravian star (Doug Linker did a video about it), its a good practice when you start imo. After that I did the fox and the bird. The bird was the most difficult until now :)
I just tried to do the cat but I very want to do this one for my mum
Amazing video! Been thinking abt going into whittling. Could you do a shark?
That would be a good one!! I'll add it to my ideas list.
I recently found your channel and have watched so many of your videos. I really want to get into whittling now! If I’m planning to do whittling mostly as an outdoors/camping hobby would you recommend the whittling Jack over a fixed blade carving knife?
100% yes, the whittling jack would be a great option for a dedicated traveling whittling knife. I really like mine and is my backup to my GEC #62 Pocket Carver.
@@CarvingisFun awesome! Thanks for the reply, can’t wait to get started!!
Nice video ;)
Smooth it out a bit and it becomes a comfort bird🤔
Indeed oit does!! Im actually going to be posting up a quick videos of beavercrafts comfort bird here next :)
Hi, is it better to use green or dried wood for whittling? I am asking about smoothness, splits, not only easiness of cut.
Greenwood does feel easier to make smoother cuts, but the potential to the wood splitting is there. Which is why I recommend dryvwood for most people as its justvone less thing to worry about
Hi really enjoy following your tutorials :D Where do you buy 1" x 1" x 2" block of basswood? If I have a longer one, can I cut it in half somehow?
Yep, I just cut my 4" blocks in half with a hand saw.
Wet or dry wood when carving? Thank you.
If its a wood that is hard to carve when dry, carving wet will usually be easier. But then you have to worry about it splitting when it dries.
Theirs ups and downs to both and to be honest, Its a toss-up for me and depends on what you have available
Can I ask where you got your knife from? I have tried 3 or 4 different knives and don't like the feel of them in my hand
Sure thing!! I use a knife made by helvie knives, whi are arguably one of the best out there. The handle shape is called a birdtail handle and I love how it fits in my hands.
Only thing is that helvie has a waitlist 3+ months long as they are in such high demand and they hand make each tool.
As I’m doing this in one of the steps I’m like “this looks like an owl” I’m turning it into an owl now 💀
Lol, thats just how the wood wants to be sometimes!
Geese is that wood or butter?
Hey, I’ve got a short log that has cut off branches, would it be hard to widdle these things out of the branch stubs?
Naw, you should be fine. Just identify where the head and base of the body are and you should be able to carve rhe rest from there.
Look at the wittle bird
I was sooo tempted to put "A Whittle Birdie" on the video picture :)
Было бы очень интерестно.
what kind of cut resistant glove do you have?
I use Dexfit level 5 slice resistant gloves. Lately I have found the Andanda slice resistant gloves to be nice too.
@@CarvingisFun thanks!
One might say... This is a whittle bird.
What knife are you using in the video?
Im using a helvie knife :)
А ты пробовал вырезать волка или ворону?
I have in the past, but they are on my list of tutorial ideas for youtube.
@@CarvingisFun Ok. How long have you been doing this?
Been whittling on and off for the past 20 years. I got more into it about 10 years ago when I started doing stone carvings as well.
@@CarvingisFun It's great. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to master this skill, but it’s good that there are your videos. This is interesting and instructive.
I’m stupid and didn’t understand the chart so I just did it without and it was bad lol
It happens.
Not to be annoying- BUT CAN YOU PLEASE TEACH US TO MAKE A WHISTLE
I've actually been trying on and off to make one with just a knife and no drill. There are quite a few tutorials out there, but trying to make a unique one for the channel.
I found this so hard to follow
Oh? May I have some feedback for improvements?
@@CarvingisFun dunno! I just struggled to understand. I didn't have the sound on as didn't want to disturb the family! I did the same carving the fox and had no issues.
I'm struggling to get my knife super sharp so think that's an issue too.
I'll persevere with your channel, thanks for reaching out 🙂
Can't wait until I can convince my parents to buy me some basswood blocks!
👍👍👍
