  • In July 1835, land in St. Catherine, 10 miles from Spanish Town, was purchased by abolitionist Reverend Phillipo to create the first free village in Jamaica for emancipated slaves. After that purchase, other ministers did the same especially since they saw that plantation owners refused to sell any of their land to ex-slaves since these owners wanted the slaves to continue working on their plantations during the apprenticeship period. So, free villages allowed slaves to become independent instead of relying on plantation owners for their food, clothes, shelter, work, and other necessities
