I’m half Jamaican, my grandmother’s father my great grandfather was a scots-Irish man born in Jamaica his parents had left the British isles and settled in Jamaica in the 1880s, we decend from the Kinninmonth clan of Fife my 2nd great grandfather George would get an an inheritance from his father Peter, a farmer in Fife, George would move to Surry, England and take up an Irish wife and they’d move to Jamaica where George bought a farm in St. Thomas and had 4 children one of whom was my great grandfather Arthur who got an inheritance of money and the farm from his father his siblings would move to Panama. My great grandfather would employ local Jamaicans to work on his farm one of those workers he fell in love with, got married and had 16 children one of them being my grandmother and the rest is history.
On my father's side of the family the Anderson family line originates in Scotland in the East Lothian area. They settled in St James, Jamaica in the early 1700s and owned several plantations such as Flower Hill. Rebecca Mulloy had several children with Dr. John Anderson and David MacNish, including one who ended up settling in New Zealand and becoming one of the earliest "Pakeha Maoris"
My mother's name is Scottish as well. Abernathy, which is also very rare. As black people, we often talk about the sins of the Europeans, while we ignore the role that African leaders played in the trans atlantic slave trade. African leaders sold millions or maybe billions of slaves to Arabs and Europeans. Also, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to actually snatch African and enslaved them in Portugal as early as the 1440s. The economy of many African countries was based on slavery- trading arms, umbrellas, and mirrors for human beings. I know this is hard to accept, but these are facts. It was the Europeans who attempted to abolish it, not the Africans. As we know, most African slaves ended up on Portuguese ( Brasil, Cape Verde, and Sao Tome e Principe) colonies. And they didn't abolish slavery in their colonies until 1888. That's about 450 years of slavery and Portugal is still poor.
Yes there is a wider context that feeds into the Transatlantic Slave Trade. But does what you reference here make the role of England, Ireland and Scotland more palatable? It does not. There would be no trade if there were no buyers. There were buyers because of greed (oh I'm sorry, "industry" I've heard it called), and there was torture, mass murder, rape and constant brutality because of the superiority complex and lust for power. Understand all these things together and the need to deflect and present smoke screens will wane.

It was evil and demonic behavior by corrupt people. It should be remembered as such by those same group of people and for it to never ever happen again
In Jamaica, after emancipation, many formerly enslaved people simply took on the last name of the plantation they were on or picked their own last name. This did NOT necessarily mean that they were genetically linked to the owners of the plantation. Even in this story, the mixed kids of the plantation owner left Jamaica and their descendants did not remain on the island. If she was genetically linked to the Shand brothers, she could have started this doc with an ancestry dna test and traced back that way 💁🏾♀️
@@naimawright9218 That’s a false narrative you can never find a source from. Most people especially those who were not native to America or the West Indies arrived with their own surnames not a white slave masters name.
@@SDBOGLE I don't think that the other commentor is stating a false narrative, but I do believe that some people arrived with their own surnames as you stated. In my case, however, I have found sources in the Jamaican records regarding two surnames in my family tree. Both surnames belonged to enslavers who owned plantations in the same parish in Jamaica where my ancestors lived. I have traced back to the early 1800s and have found the original documents in the Jamaican records. The surnames are not that common in Jamaica and are Scottish. I have DNA matches who have the same surnames and all of our common ancestors lived in the same parish in Jamaica as the enslavers. I actually was surprised to find this information because I did not know about the surnames. I only found out when I did a DNA test and saw other DNA matches with the same surnames in their trees. I checked their trees to see if they were correct by using the Jamaican records. So far, however, I have not found any DNA connection to the enslavers, but I do have distant European DNA matches on this particular side of my family.
@@Ray-lj1se Those enslavers were family, as all those surnames were of both black and White Scottish clans. Most of enslaved people in Jamaica were from the British islands not Africa. If you wanna see the primary source I can show you. DNA is for entertainment, made a family tree and search your genealogical records.

@@SDBOGLE We have differing opinions. So, I am writing this, not only to you, but mainly to black people who are interested in researching their family with accuracy. Attention spans are short these days, so a warning to anyone who reads this: this is a long response. Please excuse any typos. I will start off by stating that MY black ancestors were AFRICAN. They were not ‘Scottish’ and did not belong to any "Scottish Clan". I have DNA proof, as I have DNA matches (i.e. relatives) who are black Africans. I have written more about this in this message. I am well-versed in genealogy and building family trees. The genealogical procedures that I use are the same ones that are used to identity cold case perpetrators and victims. Because I am using the same procedures, I look at DNA results, DNA matches (i.e. people who match through DNA), and official government documents. These procedures are used to accurately build family trees and identify common ancestors. I am actually studying to become a professional genetic genealogist and have been helping black people who are adopted as well as those who do not know the identity of their biological parents. The field of genetic genealogy is dominated by people who are not black. While I have been in contact with black people who are well-versed in using DNA in their genealogical research, I have noticed that some are not aware of the tools available to them through sites like Ancestry. I have hundreds of official government documents (e.g. births, baptisms, deaths, marriages, slave schedules, slave baptisms, wills, etc.) dating back to the early 1800s. I do have a few from the late 1700s. I have hundreds of family records of my own ancestors that are official government documents. I have also built numerous family trees. Not all of these trees are mine because I am helping other people. I only use official, government documents - not copies of documents found on some guy’s website. I have seen things like this floating around the internet. Documents with no references. On one of the family lines that I initially wrote about, I have DNA relatives who are 100 percent black African. They are Ghanaian. I have contacted them. We share 3rd great grandparents. Not one Scottish sounding name in the bunch. Their names and the names of their ancestors, are all African. I cannot even pronounce these names. I would not have known anything about these African relatives were it not for DNA testing and perusing my list of DNA matches. My black ancestors on this particular branch carried the surname of their white, Scottish enslaver. Slave schedules exist in the Jamaican records for this enslaver and I continue to research. I have Ghanaian and Nigerian DNA matches on both sides of my Jamaican family. All of these African DNA relatives match with other Jamaicans and Americans who are related to me. None of these people have ‘Scottish’ or ‘British’ names at all. I have checked their family trees. All African names. Two of my black African DNA matches still reside on the African continent. I also have DNA relatives who are 100 percent white European. I have contacted some of them. The ones who have gotten back to me have descended from white European enslavers. I am related to them through these white enslavers. I have genetic ties to slave-owning states in the American south through at least one white enslaver. To black people reading this who are interested in genetic genealogy: PLEASE DO A DNA TEST!!!. I don’t know why people, in 2024, still believe that DNA testing is for entertainment purposes only. I assume that is because most people who have taken any of these tests are using them only for that purpose and don’t understand the science behind it. If someone is claiming to be a professional genealogist and states that a DNA test is not necessary, I would think twice about using her/his services. I cannot stress this enough. I notice that there are black UA-camrs who speak about black people tracing their roots. Yet these very same black people dissuade other black people from using DNA. I also see people in comment sections telling black people not to use DNA. If you do not use DNA, you can easily make errors and research the wrong people who you think may be your ancestors, but actually have no genetic ties to you whatsoever. DNA testing is NOT only about being 10 percent this and 20 percent that. Your DNA matches list is your most powerful tool in modern day genealogy and must be used along with official government documents for accuracy. There are UA-cam videos that educate viewers on how to use DNA matches in genealogical research. Many of them are excellent.
Thank you for talking about this! One of my family names is McGowan. It's both Irish and Scottish and my fam has both that Irish/Scottish DNA from my Mom 🎉. I'm taking up the challenge with finding it and I'm 90% sure it's from the major enslaver James McGowan in Port Royal, Kingston, Jamaica. I recently bought the book by Kate Phillips, 'Bought & Sold: Scotland, Jamaica, Slavery'. It's definitely worthy of reading for my info and history.

Especially since the mulatto kids benefited from their plantation owner father. It’s a complicated because today we live in a better world but let’s not edit history and call the kids black because it brings confusion of them verse full Africans.

Not just an interesting modern link to history, a refreshing example of open, honest, civil conversation about the non-consentual role enslaved People played in the building of the grand estates and wealth. Thank you for this!
I’m just seeing this. Thanks so much for your contribution to Jamaican genealogy. If you have not done so as yet, I strongly recommend that you do a DNA test. If you have the last name “Shand” the chances are that you are a descendant. People often make the mistake of confusing the naming conventions in Jamaican plantations with those in the American colonies. However, if the enslaved in Jamaica carried the surname of an enslaved or a plantation overseer, the chances are that this was their father. The register will identify them as Mulatto, Quadroon, or Octoroon.
My decendant was a Quadroon but unfortunately I can find no information on her (or her parents) sadly. I only know she had 7 kids with a MacLean from Scotland in the 1700's. She is buried in St. Catherine but the rest of the family (to my knowledge) either joined their father back to Scotland or in my instance, came to Australia. I guess records from 1700's are hard to come by
Check out the transportation records from Europe to the Americas and Caribbean plantations from the 1700s. A description of the transported passengers is recorded. Many European people were actually people of color and were then exported, and sent to work on the American plantations and in the Caribbean. Cromwell in the 1600s deported the black Irish. When these dark Europeans went, they took their names with them. Once in the Americas, new laws separating people by color codes were then created to keep darker colored people enslaved. Following the bacon rebellion in the 1690s, legal distinction between people based on the caste of color was created so as to distract the populations from coming together.
The reason so many Jamaicans have Scottish, English or Irish surnames is because at the end of the Plantation era (slavery days)...the slaves were released, but they took on the name of slave owners/ masters or Bacra Masters. Because they only had African names previously, so to live and work in a British colonial society ( as Jamaica was back then ) they needed English names, to live and work in society. The ex-slaves no longer identified themselves as Africa after living in Jamaica for so long, so they took on a Jamaican identity and even tried to speak and dress and adopt some of the bahaviour of their past bacra masters. The languages mixed over time with all the various people who were living in Jamaica after the Plantation days...to create the Patois ( which is a creole or mix dialect ) and is mainly broken English with elements taken from African, Irish, Scottish, Spanish, East Indian languages blended together and spoken fast.
Or Cromwell exported a ton of Melanated people out of Ireland in the 1600s and sold them into slavery on the plantations in the Caribbean and America. Many owners were people of color from Europe as well.
Stephenrennie. The research been done..it was their own surnames. they lived in Europe before being bought to the slavery plantation, to empty Ireland and Scotland of black people. Ever heard of the 5th century gunboat wars.
Early Origins of the Shands family, Normandy France. The name is Sephardic Jewish in origin, who were people of colour also. The surname Shands was first found in Aberdeenshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain), a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland, where they held a family seat from ancient times, some say as early as the 12th century. In this county the name has been found in the parishes of Fyvie, Drumblade, Auchterless, Culsalmond, Forgue, Turriff, Gamrie and King Edward. "A rare but old surname in Scotland. 'The surname of Shand seems originally to have been confined to the north-eastern counties, particularly Aberdeenshire, and in that county more especially to the districts comprising the parishes of: Turriff, Forgue, Drumblade, Auchterless, Culsalmond, Fyvie, King-Edward, and Garnrie." [1] The family is said, by C.F. Shand, the family historian, to be descended from Philibert de Shaunde, Earl of Bath in 1485, who in turn, was descended from a noble house in Normandy. The Earl of Bath, Philibert Shaunde, was created by King Henry II of England and Normandy. Philibert was styled by the King as "Consanguineus noster." [2] Further south in England, the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 include: Johannes Schaune, Webster; and Thomas Shan.
@@Ray-lj1se
Those enslavers were family, as all those surnames were of both black and White Scottish clans. Most of enslaved people in Jamaica were from the British islands not Africa. If you wanna see the primary source I can show you. DNA is for entertainment, made a family tree and search your genealogical records.
@@Ray-lj1se
You believe that narrative because you think slavery was about race, black negro Africans and white peoples Europeans..
Get yourself this book. Jews and Muslim in British Colonial America by Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman and Donald N Yates.

I Really Enjoyed This, Very Interesting, Thank You 💚🇮🇪🏴
Thank you for talking about this!
Wow I’m actually on a mission to find out about having third gen Barbados and fourth gen Jamaican rooted cousins and this video comes up after a search.
I’m looking for the surname MCcogg any help would be appreciated 🤷🏽♀️
Is a Irish and Scottish name McCogg
@@deanwhale367 thank you my great great grandfather was Scottish so my grandad had the name of McCogg.trying to find out what clan etc and if there are any descendants still alive it’s proving difficult though
That's awesome to went to Scotland I'd love to do the same I've many Scottish surnames on my maternal side. Gordon, McLeod, Taylor, Hay, Hayes, Hume's, the list goes on
I have McLeod, Gordon, Young on my maternal side and Sinclair, Beckford , Wilson & Broadbelt on my paternal side. Done my dna and I have Scottish and Irish dna. I’ve learnt John Hayle Sinclair, is a direct relative. You can Google him for the legacy he left in Jamaica.
Wowwww my some of my ancestors were on an estate William Shand had in Jamaica my maternal side are from a saint Catherine during early 1800s it was called Saint John parish and Saint Dorothy
That’s where my GGG grandmother is buried. Her son’s name is John Shand Maclean who came over to Australia after she died. Which is where I am!
Im a Shand and mu dad is from St. Catherines, Jamaica. This is so interesting. I wonder if we're all cousins 🤔
@@cakesboo6554 So where are all the Black people in Jamaica came or originated from.
They are looking at this through an American lens what people need realize is that mulattos weren’t considered black and their were marriages in Jamaica between white and black in Jamaica during slavery it’s very different from what happened in America it’s not always rape. Especially since the mulatto kids benefited from their plantation owner father. It’s a complicated because today we live in a better world but let’s not edit history and call the kids black because it brings confusion of them verse full Africans.
If you check the history. There was a lot of rape & abuse.....
No they weren’t considered black-it’s marcus garvey that created this chaos. Dob erman mixed with shitzu is not the same as dob erman mixed with Pomer anian.
Respect for doing this me lady ✊
I guess records from 1700's are hard to come by
I am from Jamaica I had a classmate in high school her last name was Shand.
lol I’m Shand too, and I heard my grandpa was from st Ann before he moved to westmoreland.
Im a Shand. Dad is from St Catherines
Princess Diana's Mother was married to Peter Shand Kydd so who knows maybe they come from the same cloth.

'The surname of Shand seems originally to have been confined to the north-eastern counties, particularly Aberdeenshire, and in that county more especially to the districts comprising the parishes of: Turriff, Forgue, Drumblade, Auchterless, Culsalmond, Fyvie, King-Edward, and Garnrie." [1]
The family is said, by C.F. Shand, the family historian, to be descended from Philibert de Shaunde, Earl of Bath in 1485, who in turn, was descended from a noble house in Normandy. The Earl of Bath, Philibert Shaunde, was created by King Henry II of England and Normandy. Philibert was styled by the King as "Consanguineus noster." [2]
Further south in England, the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 include: Johannes Schaune, Webster; and Thomas Shan. [3]

Sephardic jews were not "people of color" Stop that mis information. Spanish are white. Thats like saying ashkenaz are people of color since they have the same origins. Literally stop talking. Just because a white person has a bit of a tan, doesnt make them not white, And olive skin does NOT exist. Greeks and italians are often called that, falsely, they are also WHITE people. Look up these names that Melanted people gave themselves and what they mean. Names like Donovan, Duane, Moore, Morrell, Duncan, Mauri, Darcy, Moreu, Adriana, Ciara and Nigel. These names all mean Black, Dark, and Swarthy. Black people ruled Europe for at least 700 years. Jamaicans are from Ireland originally. Why would a slave owner give his last name to a slave when he could have just physically branded them? Don't let other people tell our history.
The whole world had slaves whites were enskaved by North Africans along the south coast , Slavic people were enslaved by the ottomans in the millions etc etc, thank god the uk stopped the practice . By the way it’s an ongoing practice in Africa 😢😢😢😢
