RIP, James Drury. Tim Matheson was actually in Season 8 of 9 seasons of THE VIRGINIAN. Season 9 was a redesign of the series, and it was renamed THE MEN FROM SHILOH and had a new theme song, sounding a lot like those "Spaghetti Western" tunes of the time. MeTV is starting reruns of Season 14 of BONANZA today, so fans can see Mr. Matheson for the next few weeks there. I'm glad MeTV is running the entire series of shows like BONANZA, GUNSMOKE, and MY THREE SONS (where Mr. Matheson made a Season 3 guest appearance that should be rerun in the next few weeks) rather than the usual partial rerun packages of these series. My favorite Tim Matheson movie appearance (of those I've seen so far) is as Roy/Trevor in "A Very Brady Sequel". He did a great job playing a comic villain there.
My single complaint with these interviews is that they are not long enough. Wonderful stories, wonderful insights, wonderful memories. But over too quickly. ( Still, great stuff. Please keep it up. )
Yes, the full episodes are available. Our UA-cam audiences for A WORD ON WESTERNS is growing and a lot of you out there are enjoying the series, but are unable to join us. So, we put every effort into delivering complete interviews. After the segments have been edited for the weekly episodes, they are placed together in the Playlist section and can be viewed back-to-back, like binging on Netflix or Amazon. When we began broadcasting our AWOW tributes to western films and filmmakers on UA-cam in January 2014, most people viewed them on their phones so we were advised to keep the segments at the then acceptable length of 3-4 minutes, excerpted from the 15-20 minute original live interviews, and discussing a single topic. It was taking about 20 hours per week to book talent, crews, do a rough cut, gather clips and illustrations to produce and edit these shorter episodes. After 5 years, times and viewer acceptance for longer segments (and large screens) is now possible so we began extending episodes, trying to make them at least 10 minutes in length. We have succeeded and have often tripled the running times of our original episodes. But now production time for me is 25-30 hours a week, 52 weeks out of the year! I'm continuing to launch a new episode every Sunday and the pressure of (my self imposed) schedule, after (now) 6 years, is relentless. We do tape a two-hour interview show every other month at The Autry Museum in Los Angeles, open free to the public, where the individual, live, interviews run as long as 20 minutes each. These full interviews are edited into two parts for viewing. We are packing the theater with western hungry film and TV fans and, now beginning our 7th year, are the only weekly series to even attempt documenting western film history. Thanks for watching, sharing and subscribing to our history of western films and TV. Until they cart me off to Boot Hill, there are more new episodes coming every week! Adios, and thanks again.

A good Sunday morning, Rob. I love this interview with insight into Kurt Russell, Doug McClure, Michael Landon, and two of my favorite shows “The Virginian”, and “Bonanza”. Keep them coming, Rob.
Great interview with Tim Matheson, Rob. FYI: James Drury owned a horse ranch near where I live and got to see him a couple of times in town. And in the late 80's I got to meet Michael Landon while having lunch in Truckee. He came in the restaurant with his huge family. What a pleasure that was.

Thanks, fiona. Tim has a new book out, his autobiography, "Damn Glad to Meet You," and will be joining me in a couple of weeks for a new interview to discuss it.
Don’t know how I missed this one Rob. Popped up on your channel after I watched the latest one on Michael Landon. Great interview with Tim Matheson. Thanks!

Great interview Rob. Mr. Matheson has such a varied history in film and television. So it was nice to hear of his days on the set of these various western series. What better way to learn your craft then to work with these legends of film and TV. It must have been an exciting time.
Kurt Russel & Goldie Hahn once lived ~40 miles "up-valley" from me in Snowmass. They took their Jeeps to Berthod Motors, where my husband was their mechanic. They were both "down to earth' people. Remembered Everyones names. Saw me brining my husband a sack lunch. A month later, saw the in our local market, said hello & told me "George" was a great mechanic and man. Then said that I (using me name) was a kind wife & woman. They both treated Everyone one like this. Never put on any 'airs' & were beloved by many. (They lived in separate houses next to each other - Might be why they've lasted sooo long as a couple?)

Thank you so much, I have been revisiting the Virginian on UA-cam recently. Tim was in an episode "the family man" in that which I really loved, a very sensitive performance. Gorgeous and so talented
I live every episode and all the people! So many memories, Johnny Quest was my favorite cartoon series. A friend of mi e who was drafted into the Minnesota twins farm team from Portland out of high school as a pitcher told me a bit about Kurt Russell and his Dad, being big time baseball players, I cant remember the whole story but apparently they Playing or Kurt was playing some ball here back in the day. 2 of my favorite actors Kurt Russell and Tim Matheson.
Way too short! For those of us who grew up on these shows, these interviews are pure gold! More, please and way longer! I was born in the wrong century! ha
My dad is 93 now and sometimes the years are heavy on him. However some of his sharpest memories are when he could go to the movies. It gave him an outlet away from the Depression. His favorite cowboy was Bob Steele. He liked him because he didn't kiss as many girls. :) When I've visited him over the last couple of years instead of turning on the news I've turned on UA-cam and watch the Bob Steele videos posted with dad. I must admit, he could really ride! I watch for the way he leaps into his stirrup too, not grabbing the horn until he's in mid-air. I'm amazed at the way these guys ride too! Afternoons are fun with dad, he laughs at how I watch for Bob to leap into his stirrup and he always comments that those horses ought to be half dead by the time they finish. Anyway, thanks so much Rob. You're recording history here. Your contribution will live on as long as we love cowboys. Thank you, thank you.
This was absolutely incredible. I am so, SO glad you put this together. James Drury is a good friend of mine, and my longest lived hero, so anything to do with the Virginian really thrills me. Thank you again. I love your channel.
They should have mentioned Kurt Russell's dad, Bing Russell, who was a character actor in tons of westerns. Elvis Presley idolized Bing Russell and told Kurt on set once that he (Elvis) wanted to wear his cowboy hat the way Bing wore his. So Kurt probably learned a lot from his Dad.
@@AWordonWesterns That would be great. Bing Russell has quite a story. When he played a "good guy" in westerns he was very convincing and extremely reliable but his "bad guy" performances are more memorable to me. Fantastic actor.
Yeah you're right I heard that story 2 I like Bing Russell and I really like Kurt Russell is my favorite actor in Hollywood now all the old Golden Era actors are almost gone . I've always liked Kurt Russell since the first time I saw his movies
@@paulstan9828 Yeah, I know he didn't play main characters in the series but still can't place him. Anyway, I do recall him in tv movies in the early to mid 90's. I didn't watch a lot of tv movies after this though. I did like the roles he played though as the leading man.
I never even heard of "The Quest" but as I watch this, it hits me that I really liked Tim in everything I saw him in, from "Animal House" to all those westerns. He looked great, acted well and was simply just a great actor to see on screen.
Love Tim M. I think he will always be "Otter" to me from Animal House. Terrific interview and I never realized how much he and Kurt Russell were so alike. Handsome, charming, talented and funny.
I have always had a crushed on Tim Matheson when he first appeared on Bonanza. Tried to watch anything he appeared in. Remember him in The Quest with Kurt Russell. Could only watch it when I could since I was working swing shift however I loved the show. Not happy when it went off the air. And of course Otter from Animal House. Enjoyed the interview on A Word on Westerns. Thank you.
TIM MATHESON I LOVE THIS GORGEOUS GOODLOOKING HUMAN BEING ON THESES WESTERN SHOW I LOVE WESTERN MYSELF I LOVE VIRGINIA AND BONANZA WITH DOUG MC CLURE AND MICHAEL LANDON AND ALSO KURT RUSSELL JAMES DRURY ALL OF THESES GOODLOOKING AND GORGEOUS BEAUTIFUL MAN HAS GREAT TALENT AND THEY WHERE'S ON TOP OF THE WORLD💛💙💚💜❤
I love the title of this vid; it made me laugh big time. Poor Tim didn't fit in with either of those westerns, but he definitely wasn't the reason the shows left the air. Fans were angry at Bonanza for killing off Little Joe's bride and baby and they were never going to be able to replace Dan Blocker; and he just didn't fit in on The Virginian. He felt like the younger demographic who was out of place alongside Drury and McClure. He's a darn good actor and certainly has a long list of worthy credits. ... oh, and, yes, I always noticed that opening re: Canary in the buckboard amid all the other action shots!
Didn't know he did the voice of Johnny Quest!! I learn something new every time I watch one of these! Thank you so much for these interviews. Hey how about one on Gunsmoke radio?? Would luv to hear about the old Gunsmoke with Bill Conrad and Parley Baer. They were all good!!!
I'm addicted to this channel. I love the interviews. So many great westerns covered. I grew up watching westerns with my dad. Those are my fondest memories. Watching these remind me of those special days.
I keep thinking these interviews can't get any better and you keep proving me wrong. I can't believe Tim M is 71 years old. Must be a young blood transfusion. As other's are pointing out, make these videos longer. Rob, you seem to be able to get all these great actors to come see you. Keep doing what you are doing and I'll keep watching. Thanks.
Now I know why James Drury and Doug McClure always seemed to wear the same clothes in 'The Virginian.' I would love to hear the memories of 'Betsy' from the show.
He and Kurt and I are all the same age. My first crush was Tim, then Kurt. WhenThe Quest started, I just about had a heart attack every week. The two of them together. OMG, I couldn’t breathe. The series didn’t last long, because NBC kept moving its time slot around. To this day, I still feel the same about them. Lifetime crushes🥰🥰🥰
@@AWordonWesterns l had forgotten about that. Have you had Bruce on your show? I wish those interviews could be longer, 'cause they are so nice to watch and listen to. In the Macahans series there was this girl, Vicky Schreck, that l had a little crush on. Do you know what became of her?
Great interview, Rob. The Quest was a good show, a bit of the Alias Smith & Jones vibe. It was the last of the TV westerns. Matheson always came across to me as a very competent actor, good in every role he portrayed. My favorite Russel movie is John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing, a very underrated film. I hope there is a part 2 to this interview.
M. M. He was also in the Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry sequel Magnum Force in 1973 as a young corrupt psychotic vigilante bike cop along with David Soul, Kip Niven and Robert Urich who were the other bad cops. He was definitely best known in movies as Otter in Animal House a classic comedy and one of my favorites from 1978 and he was in the Chevy Chase movie Fletch, Black Sheep with Chris Farley among many other movies and tv shows like Burn Notice as a bad guy and The West Wing.
I absolutely LOVED The Quest. The two people I have followed their careers; Kurt Russel & Tim Matheson. They both are so talented. I never missed an episode of Travels of Jamie McFeeters. That was the show I actually heard the Osmonds for the first time. So from Yours, Mine & Ours, to the loveable bad guy on Burn Notice, Tim & Kurt are the BEST!
*My dream gig, would be doing a Western with Kurt, and at least get to jaw with Tim about his **_Jonny_** Quest daze. They are two of my top 10 favorite actors.* 💯👍🎬
I really enjoyed seeing an interview with Tim Matheson as he is today. However, I loved him in The Virginian and my favorite episode with him was " The Family Man "
I'm trying to remember seeing Tim Matheson on those series but have a hard time doing so. I do remember Kirk Russell however. I only remember Matheson from the tv movies in the early to mid 90's. Haven't seen him in a while, though I must admit I really haven't been much into tv movies in a while.😌
I do love his character Jim Horn on The Virginian. You sure know where to find episodes that feature hom on The Virginian. The Virginian season 8 on Carrieok(youtube)!
Actually, he wasn't in the last season of "The Virginian". The Men from Shiloh was the last season, season 9. They changed the name, but it was still The Virginian.
I thought those episodes (Clothing Drive, Tell Ella) were weird with Beav having these random friends. There must have been a backstory. Were the actors who played Gilbert and Whitey busy with something else?
@@miked6335 i have often wondered that myself. larry was long gone. harry henderson popped in for a short while and disappeared. gilbert appeared in the last season. whitey was there from the start to the last season. as you stated they both may have been busy elsewhere.
thanks again rob.two shows from my youth rawhide and the virginian both had reboots that finished them but i really liked them! rawhide on u.k tv was yanked after the first episode and we only saw old repeats for the rest of the season!
Tim Matheson helped make Animal House a classic by playing the head of the Delta fraternity and originally producers wanted Matheson to be one of the omegas . Matheson refused to play one of the straight laced Omegas and demanded to play one of the partying Deltas.
Westerns were dying before he went on either show. The thing that killed a dying Bonanza was Dan Blocker's death. It might have run another year or two had he lived. In the mid-60's Westerns started fading in popularity and Gunsmoke was the last classic Western to end in 1975. The Quest would have been a hit a decade earlier.By that time they had faded in popularity.
The most enjoyable, just plain fun, role he played was in "1941". Young, sexy, funny, and willing to take second seat to a slap in the face comedy ending in a tare pit.
Thanks. When we started, the running time was kept at 3-4 mins. We're now tripling that length and, for over a year now, have been trying to make all of the new weekly episodes over 10 minutes each. I'm now going back thru some of the older, shorter episodes and re-editing them into longer versions, adding new graphics and illustrations, too.

Thank you.
Damn Rob. Just when I think I left, you pull me back in. Excellent interview and very informative.
TIM MATHESON I LOVE THIS GORGEOUS GOODLOOKING HUMAN BEING ON THESES WESTERN SHOW I LOVE WESTERN MYSELF I LOVE VIRGINIA AND BONANZA
WITH DOUG MC CLURE AND MICHAEL LANDON AND ALSO KURT RUSSELL
JAMES DRURY ALL OF THESES GOODLOOKING AND GORGEOUS BEAUTIFUL MAN HAS GREAT TALENT AND THEY WHERE'S ON TOP OF THE WORLD💛💙💚💜❤
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Watch a Johnny Quest episode, his voice hasn’t changed.
I'm addicted to this channel.
I love the interviews. So many great westerns covered.
I grew up watching westerns with my dad. Those are my fondest memories. Watching these remind me of those special days.
What up what you doing Rob keep it up
I keep thinking these interviews can't get any better and you keep proving me wrong. I can't believe Tim M is 71 years old. Must be a young blood transfusion. As other's are pointing out, make these videos longer. Rob, you seem to be able to get all these great actors to come see you. Keep doing what you are doing and I'll keep watching. Thanks.
Love Tim and Kurt. Too cute still.
I watch an episode every morning before getting up to get ready for work. It's a great way to start my day on a positive note.
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
He is just amazing. I wonder what happened to him. Nice to see him again thanks
Now I know why James Drury and Doug McClure always seemed to wear the same clothes in 'The Virginian.' I would love to hear the memories of 'Betsy' from the show.
I like Tim Matheson even more after seeing this clip. I forgot he was the voice of Jonny Quest. Ha!! From Jonny Quest to The Quest!!!
"the picture of Tim,Jim Drury & with them veteran bit player Harper Flaherty."-🤠🐴🏜🍺☕🌐..
They don't have anyone in Hollywood like that now and days super super talent and super miss all those guys I see all the the reruns.
I don’t know what it is but everything Tim is in he always portrays someone I like, whether hero or rascal. That’s a pretty good body of work.
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Thsnks Rob. This was the most interesting segment to date. Great actor and always liked his movies and shows..
Great interview👍👍👍
First time l noticed Tim was in a couple of episodes of the Macahans. I remember he taught Boxleitner to shoot better. A great series in my head.
Thanks, P-A. Box ends up shooting Tim in that series!!
@@per-arnemoa103 don’t know what happened to Vicki but Bruce is featured in several episodes.
Thanks. More to come. Hope to post it on Tim's birthday in December.
@@AWordonWesterns Great!
I just saw him on 'This Is Us' recently. Having grew up watching Tim Matheson on TV, it was great seeing him. Still handsome. Still an awesome actor.
As a little kid, he made a guest appearance on Leave it to Beaver.
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Gee, I only know Tim Matheson from Animal House. That was the first R rated movie I ever saw. I'll have to check out The Quest. Never heard of it.
As a kid I loved that show. You have to watch from the start it's like a series.
@Prepsteading With Disabilities as I said I loved the cartoon. One
of my Saturday morning cartoons in Kansas City Missouri.
@@elhuddleston17 Just found the pilot I'll watch it this weekend.
@Prepsteading With Disabilities Looks like 15 eps. I found maybe 9 or 10 on YT
Rob , enjoyed this interview very much . Appreciate the insight on Bonanza and Michael Landon!!!
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Loved the quest! Would like to see reruns!!!
It really holds up well, james, and has been airing weekends for two years on Sony's getTV channel. Check with your local distributor.
Keep em coming Rob!👍
*My dream gig, would be doing a Western with Kurt, and at least get to jaw with Tim about his **_Jonny_** Quest daze. They are two of my top 10 favorite actors.* 💯👍🎬
I really enjoyed seeing an interview with Tim Matheson as he is today. However, I loved him in The Virginian and my favorite episode with him was " The Family Man "
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Tim Matheson is still smokin' hot.
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Mattheson is a great guy with a body of work to really be proud of.
Always loved anything Tim Matheson was involved in. He literally can do any part....but OTTER will ALWAYS be The One for me! Cheers Everyone
Actually, he wasn't in the last season of "The Virginian". The Men from Shiloh was the last season, season 9. They changed the name, but it was still The Virginian.
Mr. Matheson's two appearances on leave it to beaver were in the last season of that series.
Great interview, awesome guest!
I loved Jonny Quest and I love these interviews.
Don't know how, but he even brought class to Animal House, right beside Belushi.
Tim Matheson helped make Animal House a classic by playing the head of the Delta fraternity and originally producers wanted Matheson to be one of the omegas . Matheson refused to play one of the straight laced Omegas and demanded to play one of the partying Deltas.
I remember him in the Virginian👍 I love western... Los Angeles
I actually watched him in The Virginian today. It was good. I had not seen that particular episode.
Thanks again as always Rob .. just love these interviews!
Robyn Tattersall Thanks, Robyn. More with Tim this Sunday. He was just such an exceptional guest.
A Word on Westerns ... yes Tim is a generous interviewee in the way he shares and personalises his experiences
What an excellent interview and a most excellent guest. :D
That was a golden age of television. I might be a bit biased, lol.
Many thanks to you Rob Word.
He was great in the Original movie Your Mine and ours with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda.
Hello thank you so much for your love and great support towards my career I'm so grateful
Great interview loved James Joseph Horne. But it was too short. He must have had some more stories about those westerns.
I really enjoy watching your show thank you !!🤗
The most enjoyable, just plain fun, role he played was in "1941". Young, sexy, funny, and willing to take second seat to a slap in the face comedy ending in a tare pit.
He was also Otter in the 1978 comedy Animal House a hard partying ladies man and a classic comedy with the late John Belushi.
Some fine actors and actresses you interview. Really enjoy seeing some of my favorites. Just wish they were a bit longer is my only complaint.
