my pops was there following this band nearly from their very beginning and I remember he ALWAYS made sure to put on some Randy any chance he could, like whenever he cooked breakfast and especially when we drove us anywhere! hahah me and my sis grew up hearing Randy and the band tearin it up, whether my dad had popped in their cassette or he was watchin one of the dozen tapes he had of them live; my whole family loved Spirit and I'm so grateful for my dad being such a devoted fan (he wouldn't ever miss ANY of the shows they did in Florida, sometimes ending up chattin with Randy for hours afterward), if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have known about one of THE greatest rock bands ever! my pop was actually en route to what would end up being Randy's final, last ever show (before he passed away while saving his drowning son) but had to turn around and return home due to a familial issue. papa is quite old now, in hospice, yet he STILL to this day fires up his bluetooth speakers and puts on some Randy California at least once a week and man... it **always** fills the room with such love & joy!!!☆☆ sorry for 'blogging' all this jibber-jab, honestly I just wanted to say how stunningly amazing (yet woefully underrated) and important Spirit was and still IS; not just to my goofy lil fam but to the story, soul, and very essence of rock & roll itself!! ▪︎♡♡ we love you, Randy... and you too, "Mr. Skin"!! ♡♡▪︎

Sorry, I meant the previous song in the previous video. But Hendrix didn’t write Hey Joe either. It’s an old song recorded by several different people before and after Hendrix version. Hendrix did improve it drastically. I love Randy California, but Hendrix was not my fav - way too much air play and commercialization. I saw him in concert. He got mad at the audience and smashed up his guitar, then stormed off the stage. Not my favorite concert.

From Australia, I read he stood in for Ritchie Blackmore in the early 70s for one night as Deep Purple's lead guitarist when Ritchie took sick , and did a great job and that would not have been easy , Peace from down under.

On "Night Of The Guitar" it was Jimi's birthday and he played this song in dedication. Randy said that when he was 15 he went to New York where he met Jimi and that Jimi taught him to play "Hey Joe".

People had formed a human chain in the water to try to save him, but they lost their grip on him. I got there just after they lost their hold of him. It’s not a cover song. Randy wrote it and his first band, Spirit recorded it in 1969 on one of their early albums. It’s his original song.
