  • My husband and I collaborated to make this video showing you how we built our chicken house utilizing free pallets, scrap materials, and new materials we purchased. Our total cost for this chicken house was less than $200.
    Note: We had quite a bit of the materials already on hand, your cost may be higher!

    This is the smartest thing I've seen all day! The other vids are too complicated and out of my budget. I'm only 16 btw so I don't have much money

      It is not a high end coop, but it could get you started. We all need a starting point!

    This was the BEST example of a pallet coop I've seen in a while. You guys have great step-by-step instructions. I wish it was a bit lighter inside so we could see how you did the nest boxes and food/water stations. Overall, great vid.

    • @GrowingaJoyfulLife
      @GrowingaJoyfulLife  Рік тому +1

      The nest boxes were just some metal ones we were given that we modified to fit. We feed and water outside so there are no stations set up inside for that. To clean out we open both doors, remove the nest box and rake out everything into our wheel barrel to go to the compost pile. I do deep bedding so we clean out/replace shavings every 4-6 months.

    I know this video is 7 years ago, but made my own this past January, I love the big door and egg shelf. Ours is so crowded and hard to get to, I'll have to modify what my parents did into something similar to yours. Love the eggplant color and scheme!

    Great video! I have to put the doors on tomorrow and I'll be done. I decided to shorten the legs to help the coop line up to my covered run better and I found some finished exterior paneling that was 70% off because the tongue/groove was damaged that makes the coop a bit more appealing to the eye and saved some money too.

    Not sure if you’ll see this but I’m about to make a pallet coop for my chickens and I have two questions. Without any insulation does it stay warm enough in there in the winter? My winters can be freezing or below for short times so I wonder if I need to insulate. Second question, have you had any invaders in your coop (fox or raccoons)? Has it been pretty secure? I have the pallets in my yard ready and I’m super excited. It’s seems so much easier and cheaper than building from scratch. Thanks for your video.

    • @GrowingaJoyfulLife
      @GrowingaJoyfulLife  3 роки тому +2

      claymonsterpottery we are in zone 7b so it can get at freezing or below for short times and my chickens do fine. We did a 5 year update on this coop if you want to go check that out, we talked about some things we would have done differently. As far as predators go, we’ve had snakes get in but we have dogs that keep other predators away, as long as you make a way to close them up at night you shouldn’t have any problems. My father in law has had some predator issues though and they put a couple of strands of electric fence (at the top and bottom) on their chicken run and that solved the problem. The coop itself is tough, a bear could probably break in but I don’t see anything smaller than that going through it. Hope that answers your questions.

    your coop looks great... I have 2 question. now that your are done with the build and time has gone by, Is there anything you wish you had done different... and, about how much do you think you actually invested in your build...

    • @GrowingaJoyfulLife
      @GrowingaJoyfulLife  7 років тому +18

      Rick J There are a couple of things I wish we would have done. i wish we had put down a piece if linolium on the floor of the coop so it is easier to clean out and i wish we would have made external nest boxes with a flip up lid instead of opening that big door on the side. If cost wasn't a consideration i would probably have put actual siding of some sort on the outside instead of the painted plywood, we did have some slight swelling in places on the plywood after the first rain. Our total investment was less than $200 but I dont remember the actual amount and we had quite a bit of scrap materials on hand also. We have not had to invest anything else into the coop and 2 years later its still rock solid.

    Not to pry to much but how did your chickens do in winter? I live in Maryland so our winters are some what mild at times but also down right brutal. Do you heat you coop or do they do ok? What are the dimensions?

    • @GrowingaJoyfulLife
      @GrowingaJoyfulLife  6 років тому

      My chickens have done fine in it for 2 winters now. I do not heat my coop at all and am in zone 7. I'm sorry but I don't remember the demensions off hand if I have time I'll try to remember to go out and measure it later. Thank you for watching!

    • @saddleridge4364
      @saddleridge4364 5 років тому +1

      Robert, research 'cold weather chickens' if you get them from a hatchery. Some chickens fair much better in cold weather than others. I'm in PA and my chickens always do fine inside a coop that's only insulated with ( can you believe it?) cardboard and empty paper feed and dog food bags. It's a solid wood structure and I put plastic over the wire on the walk in door to the coop to keep out floor drafts in cold weather.

    • @GrowingaJoyfulLife
      @GrowingaJoyfulLife  4 роки тому

      Jen C if you go to the 3:43 mark in the video. We screwed a 2x4 to the 2x6 before we put it up there, then used the 2x4 to attach it to the top of the pallets.
