Great coop! We are getting ready to build a coop for all the new babies I got the past few months. We need space for 12-14 hens. I was going to just spend the extra money on plywood, etc. but I feel inspired by your build using pallets. About how many pallets did you use for this coop and is there any advice on choosing pallets? Thank you!
Hi Alice, Super excited that I have inspired you. As for the pallets, you want to try and grab heat treated. They will have a stamp on them "HT". stay away from the pine stuff. Try and find the hard woods. You can tell by the weight. The heavier the pallet its a hardwood. For my coop build I think i used 15 or so. It was a pretty easy project and was completed pretty much in a day. If you decide to build our of pallets or with the plywood take some video. I would love to follow your progress. Any questions feel free to ask. I would high recommend the pallet buster tool !!
Im starting a chicken/turkey coop out of pallets. Free wood... cant beat that! Mine will be walk in with a "doggie door" to the chicken run and a compost yard for them to work and earn their keep. Lol.
That was my goal when I started. Use the original size of the pallet as my base.. it worked out well. Thank you for checking out my video and channel !!
The tool I made, and the one I linked on Amazon makes it soooo easy to get pallets apart !! I highly recommend. Thanks for taking the time to check out my channel and video.
Very cool, its nice little setup. We now have 4 goats so this setup is now a little small. So I might be getting the bigger version this spring. Thanks for checking out my channel and videos.
Thanks for checking it out. It’s been up almost a year and holding up well. I have some other small farm videos posted you may also like. Considering a small pole barn build maybe later this year also out of recycled pallets !!
Never use straw or hay for chicken bedding. It's a magnet for red mites! Hay also goes mouldy when wet / damp and can cause chickens respiratory issues. Best to stick to wood shavings or miscanthus and deep litter, if possible. It's much cheaper, easier to maintain and will give you some great manure twice a year!
I was a new chicken owner back then.. old video. I use very little straw now. Mostly shaving. The goats get the straw for bedding. Thanks for checking out my build and channel. Merry Christmas 👍🐓
Great video! I just struggled tearing apart pallets for my chicken coop. Finally got sick of the boards breaking and burnt the pallets. I need that tool!
@@1620GarageAndFarm It works, that what natters. The hens are safe and happy, clean up is a breeze and collecting eggs is EZ; what more do one need than that?
Respect! Most video's are these carpenter style coops which only demotivated me to make my own..because i can't😅 but this is simple and looks good👌 But yeah i already bought a coop but now i kinda regret it because it only can hold a max of 6 chickens and i want more in the future
Thanks for the kind words. It really was not too hard. Simple tools and just time.. Thanks for checking out my channel and video leaving a comment. That helps motivate me to make more content.
Sorry about the fast camera moves. I was filming it quickly while trying to get the build done.. I will make sure to improve on this for future videos. I hope the coop build helps give you some great ideas.
Hi @Ashleyspencer4362 this project was roughly 20 pallets. Abs took about a weekend to build. We have had this coop 3 years now and it’s held up really well. Thank you for checking our video.
I love it and your tool is fantastic! I built one kinda like yours with triangle style roof and the chickens get in the rafters to roost. Did you install any roosts? Well if they sleep in the nesting boxes you have that option to get them off the floor at night. Great find on the ramp piece too!
Thanks for checking out our build video. Yes we have roosting sticks up high. I actually covered that in a couple of my recent videos. Happy you like my tool for the pallets. That makes it so easy !!
Thanks for checking out the build video. I didn't wait to paint the inside as that could be toxic for the hens. I did put a large rubber mat on the floor that is easy to pull out and clean. I may do some stain/sealer on the outside this summer. I want to keep the rustic wood look. I may be building a second one soon. I have a feeling my wife and daughters are getting more hens .... 🤣
@@1620GarageAndFarm, I read that rastolium could be used to paint inside. I purchased three hens and already have some eggs. MY wife want me to get three more on incoming Sunday. I just finished 9'x12 the net wire cage. Paid $330 on Amazon.
Thats awesome, Can't wait to see your videos on the new hens !! I also see you keep Bees .... I have been thinking about adding them to my farm as well.
@@1620GarageAndFarm, last Sunday I have purchased three of them. They are young chickens but two of them started to delivering eggs on Monday. I'm going to get three more in two days. My honey bees do not like the city water, and I had to drill a hand pump well. They like that natural water. A few weeks ago my pump cracked due to freezing water in. I had to fix it by brazing. I also installed some solar panels on my honey bee house. Now I have free electricity and free water. Go ahead and establish some bees colonies. Always start with two nucs. To be able to support each another if needed. Your fruit trees, vegetables, flowers ...etc. will be pollenated and you will have plenty of crops.
That's way to much draft with the gaps in the boards if it gets cold where you live. Your birds will die. Your accent sounds like a New England state. Maybe Maine? Definitely gets cold up there. Draft is a chickens worst nightmare. Another thing to consider is the looseness in your roof panels. You lifted it easily with your hand creating an opening. A racoon will be able to get in there. And they kill all the chickens in just a couple of minutes
It’s been a year. Did not have any deaths from the cold. And yes we are in Massachusetts. If you look at my other videos you will see the coop did get covered in tarps for the winter.
@@1620GarageAndFarm Awesome. I didn't want to come across as the chicken nazi but I was concerned that you would lose all your girls and that's heart breaking. Happened twice to my neighbor.
