You just saved me A HEAP OF WORK going thru my old MMI tech school notes looking for the correct way to use a torque wrench attachment.
I'll be using this method(attachment set at 90*) from now on to tighten rear axle nut on H-D's Softails. NO MORE dropping whole muffler assemblies and it's related "tighten by the hand of Hercules himself with tons of Red Loctite" hardware JUST TO FIX A SHITTY FLAT TIRE.

Thank you. This video saved me about $150, going to use a crowfoot on my torque wrench instead of buying an HVAC torque wrench to tighten lineset flare nuts.

So how do you know if the torque wrench is at the correct 90 degrees position for example on the line set connections on the wall coming from the indoor unit?
I’m interested in the crows foot also for mini split 🙁
Very good video, simple and informative those students are fortunate to have a teacher and instructor like yourself along with quality tools.

Wow, you just saved me $150+ on an adjustable digital torque wrench for HVAC. I can just use crows feet, which I already have. Wow, that's fantastic. I just didn't believe the 90 degree thing until I saw it with my own eyes... And, as per the comment below, I can see that it should actually be just a little less than 90.
Glad I could help. 👍 Thank you for taking the time to comment! It helps us!

You should still not believe it, but it is a good approximation as long as the extension is short relative to the length of the wrench.
Becauset does affect it, even at 90°s. It will be approximately correct only when the adapter is very short relative to the torque wrench.
Basically you're making two legs of a right triangle and the hypoteneuse is the arm of leverage. The ratio of the hypotenesae to the wrench is the factor you will be off by.
You'll notice he switched from his adapter to the much shorter crows foot to demonstrate at 90° and it still showed slightly higher than the control runs.
90 degrees is actually just a bit too much extra length, because the hypotenuse of a right triangle is longer than either of its sides. What you really want is to make an isosceles triangle, with the length of the wrench is equal to the distance from the wrench handle's midpoint to the center of the fastener. In other words, slightly less than 90 degrees.
Whoaw.. did you used to sit at the front of the class? Your one Fart Smella. (Copywright AvE)
Yep - just what I was thinking. Supported by the readings on the device which DID show a slight increase from the original wrench. Pythagoras wouldn't have fallen for that! My view is that it's an "Industry Standard" approach that slightly over-simplifies things but is good enough in most situations.
That is one of the smartest thing I had heard. Crowfoot is a pretty small extension. Set it 90 degrees should mitigate a little. Your hypotenuse will still be a little bit longer than original length of torque wrench handle, but if you set it one click less than 90 degrees ( opening of crowfoot towards your operating hand) that should mitigate that inaccuracy even more. Installing a split AC unit and want it dead on. Thanks.
Nope. That's quite wrong. It is not the distance that matters. The point here is that the applied torque agree with the torque wrench click. As long the angle between the torque wrench arm and the extension is 90 degrees, the two will agree. See here hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/torq2.html for the physics. It hinges on the fact that the sine of 90 degrees is one. Torque is not force times distance; it is force times distance times sine of the angle.

Very informative demo - clears up a long standing question I had in the back of my mind about if you could use crows feet spanners/wrenches on a torque wrench and how it affected the overall result

Thank you very much for this, and the other educational videos about properly using torque wrench. If only "You Tube" existed 20,25 years ago!Enything I learned was from magazines (like "Popular mechanic"),or getting advice from friends.I'm very surprise, how accurate that micrometer style (click),"Snap-on" is.I know most likely you calibrate your torque wrench, but I was expecting only electronic torque wrench to be that accurate.
Thank you! Thank you for answering on other comments as well.

I was hoping to see a test using a standard socket extension. My inch pound torque wrench seems to be way off if I use a three inch extension along with 3/8" to 1/4" reducer and I can't figure out why it would be affected this way. Puts waaay too much torque on my bolt with this setup. Can't reach the fastener without the extension, so I've resorted to just a seat of the pants feel. Helpful vid nonetheless.

I have had this same question and it seem that if you had an extension to the wrench it self then yes the torque will change....but if you add to the drive it will not change the value...in short...It depends on which you are making longer, the wrench or the torque wrench HANDLE.

I have a couple of questions, i'm using a click type snap on torque wrench on wheels and some people ask me why i like to check a wheel's torque sequence, star pattern over 3 times, is it bad? I like to do it to ensure that the nut does not move. Some people just torque it once and that's all to them... There's been times its stopped moving because i didn't have much movement for the torque wrench and it probably torqued at 65 ft lbs rather than 76 ft lbs.

I need to get one of these to properly torque the rear driveshaft to differential flange bolts. They are 12mm 12 point and difficult to access by any means other than a hand wrench. 2 wrenches put together gets it tight but it would be nice to torque them all to spec at 83 ft/lbs.

Beautiful test, thankyou!
@Shane Conley Great series, interesting point with the 90 degree offset remaining the same torque. very cool to see the results. So using a traditional extension on the torque wrench head, does that affect the overall torque being as your handle to head length hasn't changed, just the distance from the fastener to the torque wrench?
Zack Saunders
No but I cannot speak of a limit though. Really long extensions may allow some "twist".
25.00 lol, that’s just awesome! But it would be stressful to spend an hour just to get a whole number…
What if you add a rotatory sensor to measure the torque output between the torque head and the extension.... and if you put it again but in between the extension and the tester... The measure will be the same?
You may have reached a conclusion yourself by now, but it seems you're proposing using something like a digital torque adapter to measure in those two locations? It's not quite clear whether you mean the reading will be the same value in both locations, or the reading in each case will be the same as the tester gives for wrench alone and with extension. But, within margin of error, it will be the latter. The wrench will be delivering its set value to the extension, and the extra length of the extension will multiply the torque to the resulting output, unless at the nominal 90°. These days digital adapters are inexpensive, so two could be used at the same time to display the values simultaneously.
Excellent

Good to know, thanks..
Modded tools all day! I will share that the Wrench needs to be 90° or Perpendicular to torque wrench to get correct torque. If it fulcrums past the end of the torque wrench the torque would be wrong
The calibration unit has a minimum torque of 25 ft lbs so when you were excited and stated "not getting better than that!" that's because it couldn't read any lower. Just saying.
We definitely did something like this in a mechanical engineering lab!

@@How2Wrench Nope, this was a while back in school. It was to supplement the Statics I class we had. There are lots of problems like this with Free Body diagrams and torque moments. So we did something practical, with lots of math involved. Now I do lots of work on cars as a hobby and these videos are very helpful. I always get nervous if I have to use a crowsfoot and a torquewrench. From one instructor to another, Thanks for creating these quality videos. I am more the software /EE realm professionally though. I will certainly look into your materials.
@@alb12345672 Nice...thank you for the story and kind words...
love your vids thanks. Do you know why HD uses a final cyl head torque by angular measurement and not continue with a torque setting? I've seen several older cars using the angular method over the years as well as a few broken head studs!
And so many of the aftermarket "monotorque" style auto suppliers here recommended a torque figure instead. Wondering why HD engineers chose this method for an air-cooled twin? .. thanks, Richard.
Richard I do have the answer right from HD. Stay tuned as I have an upcoming video on it.
Very helpful!

*What about holding the torque wrench, on the lower end of the handle vs on the higher end of the handle? Maybe a difference of 1-2 inches apart?*
From answering other people for Shane we know he has a video in the playlist on that!
Let me try and see I can catch Shane to answer quick. He is currently at an extended stay in Japan training students this winter. We are just the social media team.
Due to his limited bandwidth on time and demand for help, we had to choose to forward any requests from members first and it is only $1.99 a month to join. All member tech questions like this get directly forwarded to him every day! Be mindful and honest that this is for "quick questions" that would serve you answers that can clearly be addressed. If it's a diagnosis need you'll need to use the one-on-one service.

@@AzNightmare i got you.
It doesn't matter where you hold the handle. The torque wrench will indicate the same torque regardless.
Torque=force*distance, meaning you will have to push a little harder if you choke up on the wrench but since it's measuring torque, not force it doesn't affect the bolt.

torque = force x length . I suppose you can just subtract 1 ft lb from your readings if using the same crows foot length @ 180 degrees. The torque wrench itself has a approximate error of +/- 0.5 ft lb anyways. In the real world for most applications that will not make a critical difference. The longer wrench yes, you will see a larger difference.

I see the variations of the readings of your test compared to the students..
I apply torque slowly to get an accurate set ..
You appear to apply the pressure to quickly, resulting in a inconsistent result..
what about socket extentions?
Socket extensions don't affect torque value. They could affect torque value if you have a weak socket extension,or if you have multiple socket extensions, and they twist. For accurate torque reading, only strong and adequate socket extensions.
Even if they twist, the torque at the opposing end of the torque wrench is holding the same torque that the using is putting into the torque wrench. If you can't get the torque wrench to click cause its twisting that bad then thats a different story.
correction...when I said"the wrench" I meant the drive

You are actually mistaken on this, and If you had used the longer extension at 90 degrees it would have been apparent.
Instead you switched to the crows foot. (It was only slightly higher than the prior runs so you swept it under the rug)
The 90° rule is only an approximation when the adapter is short relative to the wrench, and even then it will be off by a couple percent, as we saw.
For example, if the adapter is the same length as the wrench at 90° you're actual torque will be 41% higher than indicated. (Pythagoras sqrt(1+1)=1.41)
Hello and thank you for commenting. I'd recommend you consider watching the series were we show it many more times with extensions as well, along with reading the manuals to the viewer (multiple brands) and different use cases with training received (and supported) by the tester manufacture CDI (Snap On doesn't really make them... :) As we welcome all comments ESPECIALLY ones so well wrote....we thank you again!

@@How2Wrench it's really awesome that you make content like this, it's the best I've seen on UA-cam. And I'm jealous of your equipment.
And yes, I've seen the recommendations in manuals and elsewhere for the 90° rule, but it's still just an approximation or rule of thumb, even if it's a really widespread one.
For example, even with a 3inch extension and a 12 inch wrench you're only over torque by 3% at 90°. So it's not a bad rule to go by.
It only becomes a problem if somebody takes the rule to heart and uses an extension isn't short relative to the wrench.
woooau ..how smart you are ! do not make kids
+stefan stefutz
What did you find wrong here Stefan?
Let me explain.
The 90° "rule" is only an approximation, and then only when the extension is short relative to the wrench.
