The wild chickens are everywhere like that on all the islands. When hurricane Iniki came through in '92 all the chicken coops on all the islands were destroyed. Love these travel videos Jason, so well put together, informative and so enjoyable! It’s almost like I’m on the trip with you! Can’t wait to see what amazing content you’ve got in the pipeline.
Thanks for showing off the Oahu retro gaming scene. I live on Oahu and recognize almost every place from this video. At 00:49 in the video you show some games from the PearlRidge mall Book Off, that Sega CD game on the right side of the shelf “Who Shot Johnny Rock” is the same exact copy I sold them a while back. I’m surprised no one has bought it yet. Wow, my old game is famous now!
Glad you made it over to visit! This was a trip to watch because I'm originally from the Seattle area but now call Hawaii home. And thanks for showcasing RetroMax, he definitely has the best selection of retro games on the island!
When i was stationed in hawaii 6 years ago. i went to retromax alot to buy old video games. Glad he is doing well. On my last weekend i visited him and he gave me Kickle Cubicle complete in box NES
I was born and raised in Columbia, SC. I will bet anyone this--Columbia, SC is the HOTTEST place on the earth. Not only are the temperatures get super high, but humidity is often at 100%, every day in the summer. I can completely believe that Greenville (not that much farther north but a tad better than Columbia) felt worse that Hawaii. I've been to other tropical locales and nothing compares to the stagnant heat of SC.
Oh man those Book-Off stores looked really awesome, so well-stocked with games! Tell them they are welcome to expand into Europe as well, preferably my country, I'd love to have them around. 😁
12:05 Jason, did you notice one of the military officers behind you had picked Possessed *Seven Churches* ? Never thought I would see the day that a currently serving military officer would be buying one one of the most classic, influential death/thrash metal albums of the mid 80's and all time. Especially in a place like Hawaii haha. PS: The guitar player of that band Larry Lalonde went to join Primus shortly after that band. The vocalist is also wheelchair bound and still doing amazingly well.
That’s me haha, it was an instant purchase when I saw it. I was surprised to find a copy there, influential and classic record. Wish they had a bigger Metal selection!
Born and Raised here on Oahu and the retro game community is small but very awesome. I met RetroMax at one of the collector expos at one of the nearby malls and this was the first time I saw a great selection of retro games in my life. He priced everything fairly! Bookoff tends to over price some things but none the less. Game hunting here on the island is a big challenge but it’s great fun as you go all over the island to different spots. Hope you visit again MJR!
About Book Off, there are a few in California, but there are also 2 in NYC. One of them opened up in Brooklyn fairly recently and is apparently completely dedicated to anime, manga, and Japanese import items. The Manhattan one is standard.
My wife and I just went to Oahu for our honeymoon last year. It was both our first time's in Hawai'i! What a beautiful place it is! It's great to see you enjoying life and hunting for those games!
Neven been to Hawaii myself but back in 2000's I loved this online store named Toys & Joys in Honolulu. They had almost everything you could ask gaming or anime related specially japanese imports you couldn't even find on Ebay. The owners and employers were really helpful. Sadly they closed their store a couple years ago. Looks you both really enjoyed that trip :) Great video and beatiful place.
Fun fact: While the stores have closed now, the family opened up a new business which are a pretty good Vietnamese food restaurants called The Pig and the Lady and Piggy Smalls.
omg i was stationed there in the late 90s and i was thinking about this store, i bought my Final fantasy 6 soundtrack there which i since had autographed. i miss that store and the mall with the monorail between the 2 halves lol
We used to have a bunch of videogame shops here. Toys N Joys (of course), Jelly's (comics, music, games, etc.), Discount Outlet (block away from Toys N Joys), and more. Most closed because of slower sales, high rent, new business ventures, and in certain cases drug abuse (by the owner). BookOff used to have pretty competitive prices when they were in Shirokiya and Don Quixote, but now they seem to price items at whatever the highest price is on eBay regardless of condition. Toys N Joys has roots from the Swap Meet as well. They grew from there and had two stores, one in Kaimuki, and the other in Aiea. Yeah....I really miss them.
I remember buying megaman x from there after looking for a long time!! Got my first pokemkn blue in kaimuki too after it was sold out all over the place around Christmas time!! Good ol days
You're the definition of work hard in your 20s-30s and then enjoy your life in your 40s and 50s. Dont wait until your 60 and up. Love to see you traveling again
Again, I love how your travel videos go beyond video games and basically become a travel vlog. Also, thanks for the heads-up about the UV levels. I'm actually headed to Honolulu next month; I'll definitely be keeping an eye on that UV rate.
Your Japan videos were some of my favorite youve ever done and this one goes uip next to those as one of the best. I havent been to Hawaii since 97 so its been a long time. I love tropical places and they make such sensational backdrops for videos like this. Thanks for sharing this journey MJ!
So, did you play Test Drive: Unlimited before arriving in Hawaii? Haha. In all serious, these game hunting videos are the best thing about this channel. So many cool locations to potentially visit, and the games you find, if only we had a similar volume down under. Nonetheless, I'm game hunting all around the east side of Australia next month.
My grandfather was in WW2 so I grew up eating spam. I fry it with butter and it tastes like a cross between ham and bacon. I get a bag of frozen vegetables and zap them in the microwave. I put the spam and vegetables over rice with some oyster sauce. I also put fried spam in my Mac and Cheese.
Wow! I live on Oahu and I knew we had Book-Offs here, but I never knew how awesome they were! Thanks for teaching me something! I wish I had run into you!

I've just started collecting for the PSP again after so many years away and it's just ridiculous how many different games keep cropping up that you didn't know were released!
THANK YOU. I have been stationed here for three years and it drove me wild that I couldn't find many retro game stores. So seeing Bookoff is gonna have me going this weekend!
Excellent trip, Metal Jesus. Great filming of Honolulu... To see Wii U and O.G. Xbox on'Retro Max's table was interesting. These consoles, are sleeper heavyweights. Emphasis on 'heavy' lol
I was in Hawaii last week and visited RetroMax at the Aloha Swap Meet because of this vid! He really is a cool and chill guy. He said a lot of mjf subscribers like myself have visited his booth ever since then so it's nice seeing him getting some exposure to his shop. With that being said, I bought a near pristine condition Dreamcast from him still in the box! It was the only one he had in stock too, and he sold it to me at a fair price. I recommend his booth if you are in Hawaii for sure. His booth has a ton of cool stuff in his collection and lots of imports for retro consoles I never seen before!
I would assume it's difficult to find good stuff here considering how salty the air is. A guy wanted $90 for a Pokemon Gold that was so corroded I didn't think it would work lol
PRO TIP: If you repeatedly attack one of the chickens with a sword, eventually a whole flock of its friends will fly down and rapidly peck you to death. In ancient Hawaiian times this was called the “angry cucco” secret!
It's so bizarre to see one of your travel videos and go, "Hey--I've been here!" I went to exactly most of those place (minus the game stores lol) back in November of 2019. Beautiful, beautiful place, and the food was SO GOOD.

Lovely video. I was there in february with family and went to the same swap meet and found some some old ps1 favorites. Wish I'd known about Book Off though. Also, You were probably trying to keep the tone of the video positive but I wish you touched on some of the reality of Hawaiian culture and politics that sadly most main-landers are blinded from. These include the homeless population, most of which are native in heritage. The Gentrification of natives by rich corporations and developers. Also there's the historical, forceful and manipulative colonization of the Hawaiian kingdom by The American Government. Native people cant even afford to buy homes in their islands even with 3 jobs and college degrees due to inflated prices even before the economy was ruined by the Pandemic. I could tell going there that behind every working class local, there is a suppressed resentment behind their kind and warm smiles that they have to put up because they need the money.
We take a family trip to Oahu every February, perfect weather. I always want to check for some game stores, but we never have time. And yes, I eat lots of musubi and poke when I’m there!
My family and I go to Hawaii every few years, we generally stay at the Turtle Bay Resort and then go to honolulu. It's definitely a massive change of scenery compared to the Pacific Northwest
My parents took a cruise to Hawaii and loved every minute of it. The food on the ship was all you can eat steak and lobster. There were activities every day and excursions to the island, including going out on a catamaran.
FYI, you were correct in thinking that PROTOTYPE had an HD release. A collection of both games were rereleased together for the PS4 and for the XBOX ONE. Definitely worth the pickup in my opinion.
Freaking love book-off. Been going to them religiously since a friend took me there back in 2011. Got some amazing finds over the years. And lucky a second location just opened up in Brooklyn not too long ago.
I used to go to a book off almost every saturday in southern california when i use to live there and bought all kinds of stuff. Was one of my favorite places to go.
Thanks for sharing Hawaiji trip! Aloha! It was nice to see game shop possibiliies, food, scenery and Retro Max. Thank also for UV warning. Big Swap meeting event was great.

So cool to see "my backyard" on UA-cam! I've been to nearly everywhere shown here, I feel oddly honored that you've explored and enjoyed the same places I go to on a regular basis. Hope you come again one day!!!
kauaii is my favorite of all the islands. its the smallest of all the islands but man its incredible, from Grand canyon views to the beach just minutes away.
Oh man, what memories. I traveled in 2018 and visited 2 GameStop stores that had GameCube games, and the fantastic swapmeet with RetroMax where I bought Sega Genesis games, but he sold me a PS3 game without the disc! no sign of the BookOffs, I would have visited them if I had known of their existence. Congratulations for the trip.

Really awesome video! I have been wanting to visit there for a long time. The train tours look great, I will be doing that. Thank you!
10:39 I went to that school
also 2 of the 9 GameStops on O'ahu are Military access only
It's even weirder when it's raining on your back yard and not your front. Lived there for 2 years as a kid.
I'm usually a silent subscriber, but I always love these road trip videos.
Glad you like them!
Thanks for another fantastic travel video! Really beautiful footage in this one, too.
