I'll admit at first I thought "what's the point of turning a cube if he's just gonna make it round?" Then I saw the final product and realized this is why you're the artist and I'm some fool who doesn't know what he's talking about. Well done.
🤣🤣🤣 it’s all about the journey of discovery my friend. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it. Have you watched my other videos? I think there are a good few you’ll enjoy 😊
I’ve watched like 2000 hours of these types of videos inthe last 6 months, just got myself a lathe about 2 months ago. Your technique and methods are really different from most of the other stuff I have watched and the end results are great 👍 You earned my sub today and gave me a fresh perspective on different ways to approach the art. Cheers 🤙
I really like the concept of the wobble bowl, but I 100% intend to make one of these with a base as I will find it more functional. Looks absolutely gorgeous. Much respect to Jack Mack for the inspiration
If you are making this from seasoned wood of ply wood you can leave the bottom thick and the walls thin, leave the bottom round and it will spin, wobble ever so slightly but stay fully up right regardless of how you fill it 👍🏻
I'm intrigued with what you start with and what your final results are. The grains of the woods become so prominently beautiful. I'd truly like to hear you narrate the work as you go along. That is pure artistry!
What a beautiful piece but your start of the turning so brought back memories of jr high school wood shop and the day a student caught his tool roughing in his piece on the lathe he caught the tip and launched his chisel across the shop and fully embedding into the wall! Needless to say everyone got a lecture about safety!
Hi Jim, as I beginner I’d recommend you don’t try to emulate my practices and instead learn the basics first. For example people have an issue with me starting this project with a square piece of wood and using the lathe rather than the bandsaw to make it round. Iv been turning wood as my profession for many years. The way I work is safe for me as I know the potential hazards and understanding how to avoid them. Woodturning os complex by nature and understanding the basics first is essential. That being said, if I was only making videos that could be copied directly by a beginner my channel would not be anywhere near as interesting. Please don’t use my videos as information, they are not intended that way which is why I don’t narrate them or at any time instruct others to do anything. If you have any questions regarding woodturning I’m always more than happy to advise. Cheers Jack.
Back in Jr high I had mostly finished a bowl I'd spent the entire quarter on, was just putting it on the lathe for some final sanding -- but someone had left the lathe at full speed when they powered it off and my bowl rapidly hit an RPM that shattered it into dozens of pieces. Found some of it 40 feet away. Kind of a shame. Also, potentially fatal but I lucked out.
This is the best 'cube bowl' I've seen so far...the points aren't just tapered up to the same pitch as the side of the bowl, creating deep dips that only make it good for either a fruit bowl, or decorative bowl of some kind... but this bowl has many practical uses because it can actually hold liquids & whatnot... it's not just a decoration... good design...🖖🏿😎👍🏿
Here I am, wanting the equipment to make simple things, and this pops up in my recommended! You, good sir, are a true artist; and have an ability to coax magnificent works from within even the most stubborn blanks! This is a gorgeous piece!
Thanks again Bettie. You might like my shorts channel. ‘JM Woodturning shorts’. More of the same as this channel but 2 mins long. I have a new vid dropping every other day for quite a while on there. Thanks for watching 😁👍🏻
I wasn’t sure about how you were finishing the bottom of that vessel until I saw the finished product. It is perfect. I love it. Nothing else would have worked so well.
I must say... when you start your project, I wonder what the heck is he doing! As you finish up and I see you grinding down the middle to make the inside of the bowl, I am freaking out thinking you might go too far into it and make a hole... yes I know you know what you are doing, but I still just hold my breath. The end result and the ultimate beauty makes me go back and watch the ending over and over. Thank you Jack.
It was very interesting with the lathe being near some multiple of the FPS of the camera. Made me think it would be cool if it had been tuned to match so it just looked like the cube would be sitting still and chips of it were disappearing
Happy accidents with the shutters speed and lathe rpm. It does deliver some very interesting visual effects at times though. Thanks for watching man 😁👍🏻
I thought about getting into wood turning now that I’m a home owner and have tons of space for hobbies and such. But a coworker scared me with a video of a man being destroyed by a lathe and I honestly will never see that kind of machinery the same again. I’ll just keep watching you guys do your thing and appreciate it 😅.
First thing you should consider is a vacuum machine to suck away the dust (like you see in the video). Then, big and good lathes have a rail on the height of your knees which kill the power in case you get dragged towards the machine. Most important is a faceshield and not working with longsleeve clothings, bracelets, chains around your neck or hoodie strings hanging down your shoulders. Turning is relaxing, focusing and satisfying (y) - go for it!
This wobble bowl is really cool, you always surprise me with what you manage to make and the grain in the wood is awesome and the finish you have used is really lovely well done Amanda x
Watching your videos bring me back to high school when I was learning the lathe, my teacher (also my all time favorite teacher) just said think of something and make it, I had like 6 different bowls and candle holders all made different ways, depending on how I cut and glued the piece I was turning together, god I miss being able to do stuff like that whenever I wanted
Hey T. Glad I can bring you some nostalgia, I reckon you will like my latest vid. Some prizes that could be right up your street! ua-cam.com/video/9C0q_VLZrhc/v-deo.html
Yeah a couple people said that too. I agree, it was a nice shape. But I had set out to make a wobble bowl so felt it was right to see it through. It’s all good though as there is always the next piece where I can try out new/different things. Thanks for watching and following along. I appreciate it. 👍🏻
I think you should have left it alone and not cut the bottom part off and that's just my opinion but other than that the turning and the quality of the craftsmanship looks just marvelous. I commend you Highly on your work turning looks wonderful. God bless you my friend and as always Amen
Was really unsure where you were going with this at first. I thought, "Well, another glue-up and ho-hum round bowl.". Boy was I so very wrong. The finished product with those wonderfully unique grain lines is simply gorgeous. Beautiful work sir. You are a true artist.
Have you ever wondered like how even after cutting and piercing of the wood, the lines or pattern on it remain uniform...??? That's insanely awesome...🤯
i absolutely love the concept of this and you executed it so perfectly. i know nothing about woodturning nor the tools needed for it but i know an incredible work of art when i see one! much respect

Nice job Mack. That plywood I'm sure dulled your tools quite readily. If you can get a large block of Zebra wood and do that wait till you see that pattern. Keep making chips👍
