Woodturning - Stacked Leather Mallet
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn an oak mallet with a stacked leather handle.
When woodturning a piece like I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.

Very nice to see a lefty show us how to make his version of a "practical" Cooper's mallet. Although, I enjoy seeing bowls, trays and plates being made by a lot of different on-line turners, I sure don't want to see them ALL the time. This session was different, totally unexpected, and very enjoyable to watch. I would definitely enjoy seeing more "practical" projects. Thanks.
Thanks Paul. I love these more in-depth projects and I’m striving to do more in this vein.. I have lots of ideas so watch this space and be sure to let me know what you think of my coming video, I really appreciate all feedback, good or bad.
Chuffed you enjoyed this one 👍🏻
Thanks for watching
Absolutely gorgeous multi-generation Mallet!
Have a 2 1/2lb soft leather face 15" handle one I bought when I turned 16. Be 71 next month and my future son-in-law asked what I used that Monster with. Told him everything. Rescued a drunk who rolled his car and the Police having problem busting window to get him out 40 yrs ago. One wack, no more divers side window. He's getting my tools when I head upstairs to be w/all my pets we've had all of these 50+ years of Marriage!
There's just something so relaxing watching someone work their craft; Almost feels like I'm in the zone with them.
Glad you enjoyed it Alastar. Thanks for watching 👍🏻😊

HERE WE ARE LOOKING AT ANOTHER OPTICAL ILLUSION KEEP THEM COMING
Thanks Linda. Much appreciated ☺️😊👌🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning YOU ARE GIVING ME THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES OF WHAT MY DAD DID I LOST MY DAD ON 4/5/03 HE LOST HIS VERY COURAGEOUS BATTLE AGAINST LUNG CANCER PLEASE KEEP THE MEMORIES COMING I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH
Sorry to hear that Linda. I will try my best 😊👍🏻
Another left handed turner here, always good to see it done the left way.
🤚🏻left five !
I wasn’t aware I was a left handed turner tho, I write with my left but i thought i turn like anyone else, no strong hang sometimes the butt of the handle is in my right, sometimes my left. Iv never really paid attention to it…. But I will be now 🤣🤣
I love/appreciate the multiple camera angles you deploy as it gives a great understanding of the way you address your piece and manoeuvre its angle as work along with the piece.
Thank you for that.
No problem Justin. Glad you enjoyed it buddy 😉👍🏻
''but you can just wrap it in leather" Jack; "Well thats no fun now is it"
Not quite the same John 😂
We talked about this recently, making a wooden mallet.
But this is one level up. Now you gotta go bang with a piece of art 😮
Well done Jack. I like it!
👍Frank.
Hahah. I told you it was in my list.. iv got a few more lined up.. this one is my carving mallet… but even tho it’s nice there’s a lot of change.. mallet making has set me down a path what’s likely to result in too many mallets.. 😂
this got me thinking that it would be cool to make handles for some interesting hammers from old pool sticks.
Nice idea Jay. Would love to see how they turn out 👍🏻😁
That was pretty darn nifty. Beautiful work.
Have you ever tried Woodturning?
@@JackMackWoodturning No but I used to do a lot of work on a metal lathe.
Отличная декоративная киянка. Лайк. 👍👍👍🤜🤛💪💥💥💥✌️😁
Jack, you are completely and totally different of other woodturners I follow. Your imagination is beyond the limit, you combine different techniques to achieve your best result, you pay a great attention on details and the polishing job is amazing. One single thing please pay attention: health and safety, especially when using the electric saw. Use another stick to push the wood, especially when your hand is very near the moving saw. For the rest, everything is fine. All my best and good luck!
I appreciate your kind words, and understand that your care about my safety.. but I use a push stick if I need one and when one isn’t needed I don’t..
thanks for following along. 😊👍🏻
Beautiful 👏
Would be nice to have the occasional subtitle showing what the tools are, wood type and things like that :)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Love this mallet! Would never think about turning leather on my own, but it seem like it worked so well I’m going to give it a shot. Thanks for the inspiration!
No problem Nick. Glad you enjoyed it mate 😊👍🏻
WOW that is super cool! I am definately gonna try that one!
You should! Let me know how you get on!
Bravo good work old chap
Much appreciated Zeek. Thanks for watching 😉👍🏻
Absolutely love the stacked handle. Beautiful mallet!
Thanks jessi, appreciate you watching
Really great idea well executed ... the only thing I would do differently would be to heat the steel rings on the stove before attaching to the mallet head to give them a tighter and more durable fit.
Thanks for watching Ryan, I did consider that but didn’t want to burn the rings on as it leaves unsightly marks. Instead iv used kiln dried wood that will swell somewhat in our fairly humid climate and I hope that as the end grain flairs over time with use it will also tighten down the rings.. I do agree tho.. smaller tenons and hot rings would
Make for a tighter fit. 👍🏻
Thanks for Watching
Thought this also
That was a joy to watch. What a beautiful piece of practical art you have created, WoW!
Nice one Tony. Thanks for watching 👍🏻😊
Masterpiece of a mallet!
Thank you Tyler. Cheers for watching
You obviously had a LOT of fun making that. Far more work than I would have done for a similar tool, but it does look really nice, and no one will have one like it. With the steel ferules you used on the ends of the head, standard M2 high speed steel would cut them down, as in facing the top and bottom of them. The through bolt was a good idea too. I did construction for years, and didn't like the metal handled hammers at all. The leather on that should dampen all vibration issues....
Indeed, it’s a lovely grip. I didn’t consider turning the mild steel with hand tools but I’ve turned allot of brass on the wood lathe so probably should have gave it a shot.
I definitely made this for the sake of making it rather than needing a mallet.. as, I’ve got the same old mallet I turned some 15 years ago for braying stuff, this little one was something I’d like my kids to look at when they are old men and laugh at how daft their old man was 😆
As long as they don't try to use it on each other......
I’d be very surprised if they don’t 😆
My first turning project was a mallet. Years from now, when I need a new one, I'm gonna have to step up my game quite a bit and hope for something this beautiful... and then probably never use it. :D
Haha! It is always more fun when you are making something for yourself. Let me know if you get round to it 👍🏻😉
It appears as if you are good with any sort of material. Not just wood! Great work!
Thanks for the kind words julee. Cheers for watching 😊👍🏻
12:29 made me feel uneasy
Why?
He was just polishing his knob.
🤣
Mallet looks great 👍
Cheers. 😊👍🏻
Love it. Would love something with a bit smaller head and longer handle for leathercraft.
Great work. I've been thinking about making a stacked leather pen with all my leather scraps. Now I want to make a mallet like this for my leather tooling work. Well done!
Glad I can give you some inspiration. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻😁
Very nicely done, >Joe, Baltimore MD.
😊👍🏻 cheers mate
Very slick!

Hi Leisongi, so glad you like it. Thanks for watching. 😊👍🏻
Your camera angles are the best I’ve seen. I watch way too many woodturning videos. They’re very relaxing. The maillot is ridiculous. Brilliant!

BEAUTIFUL CRAFTSMANSHIP! Very INSPIRING! Thanks for sharing!! Greetings, from Salem, Oregon USA 🇺🇸 🌲 🌲🌲🌲
Thanks Mike. I appreciate you watching 👍🏻😊
Jack, I don't know about you but I always love making tools for the shop. No money in it but I love it when a jig or tool turns out so beautiful and is just pleasant to work with. This mallet is one of the best & should yield many years of service. Kudos on a beautiful piece of work once again.
Absolutely RG. I have enjoyed using this one. I have a larger Mallet planned as well. Should be fun I hope 👍🏻😉
This guy just never ceases to amaze me with the things that he can build. Another beautiful job enjoyed the video.
Cheers bill 👍🏻.. glad you enjoyed it
Omg I love that mallet 😍

That’s one well designed and beautiful mallet!
😊👍🏻
Stunning mallett!
Thanks you
I love this videos 👍
Thanks Darius. Are you a woodturner?
This is some epic next level stuff! You're an inspiration and a bad influence. The bowls ball to box thing the other week made me shelve my current projects and go bowls ball hunting. And now this has come at a really bad time because my house is surrounded by scaffolding right now. I'm thinking "would they miss the end of one of them poles?" 🤔
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cheers James.. I appreciate the kind words and the giggle 🤙🏻
You do very fantastic work. Like the mallet and the leather work on it.😘
Thanks Margaret 👍🏻
Very very good job! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Paul. Got another, smaller one in the pipe to make soon. I need one for some more delicate melleting. Thanks for watching buddy 😁🙌
Very cool stuff. Didn't know where you were going with the leather and other square pieces you made, but the results are stunning. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Randy. Appreciate you watching 😊
That's too nice to hit things with

Awesome mallet, Jack! That thing is a beast!
Nice one bro! 😎 I have an even bigger one planned. The monster mallet! 😁👍🏻
Obra de arte.
Work of art
Excellent job Jack. A lot of planning for the design and materials used went into this project. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Well done 👏.
I did not even know you could do this with leather. Such a clever idea and great execution! Your projects always make for good watching!
Thanks Rebecca. This is a fairly common style of knife handle and goes back century’s ( if not longer) rather than resin I believe they used some
Part of rain dear to make the glue 🥴
And antlers to cap the leather/hide.
@@JackMackWoodturning That is great background info, Jack. I am fascinated by mankind's ability to make tools out of what is at hand.
One of the most interesting of your videos Jack, great work, take care, John
Cheers John. Really glad you enjoyed it
Very Nice. That's a project I want to do now.
Let me know how it goes! 😊

I was all ready to make a stacked leather mallet but alas it's just the handle. Would love to have a leather mallet. I'm just too old to need one.
