Perhaps I didn't fully succeed in turning them into "minimalists", but it's a a step in the right direction! There are a few other details that I disclose in the extended cut, so here's a little secret - if you're quick, you can actually get access to Nebula and the extended cut using a gigantic 41% discount to Curiousity Stream that lasts until the end of May (just $11.79 for the whole year). There are some great documentaries on there and signing up really helps the channel out too. Head over to curiositystream.com/danieltitchener or use code "danieltitchener" to get 41% off before the end of the month.
I'm also an architectural designer and as time goes by I'm slowly turning into a minimalist (not into it yet..will get there) and little did I know I'm also trying to turn my home into what I am without involving my family's wants and needs. I got stressed out whenever I see a mess / whenever there is new unnecessary stuff. For someone like me who likes organization and clean space, this is a disaster in my head. But then I realized I should also be considerate, I'm glad I came across your video today. Appreciate the thoughts you have there! Thanks!
I've found that a part of minimalism isn't about owning less stuff. It's about finding ways to neatly organize what you own. A place for everything and everything in its place. Having dedicated spots for the things I own means I hardly ever lose stuff.
That's true but when you have too much stuff it's impossible to organize them. I was living with 1 wardrobe and a little kitchen and I decluttered and organized my things but still when I wanted to use something, getting it out required making mess because they had to fit all in the small space. I'm going for optimal amount of things per space and designing scenarios of use that never make mess. There are compromises like making small "messes" in designated spaces like boxes, e.g. for underwear. When you change all your socks to the same model, you can just throw them in the designated drawer and never tidy this up because it neither looks bad or complicates usage. I love such things! My biggest challenge now is that my rooms are small and I made a lot of built-in wardrobes so there's plenty of space but they are quite small and I can't store things of one category in one space, they have to be mixed up to be reached conveniently 😡 I have my sport/home/sleeping clothes in laundry room and the rest of them in the bedroom... Quite annoying despite organization 😬
Organization is *not* minimalism. It's organization. Clearing away the clutter is great, but minimalism is about getting rid of excess stuff and not owning so much, not about organizing and storing it 😊 It's very freeing having less!👍
This is a daily struggle for me as I've had the privilege of designing my family's new home. I wouldn't describe myself as a minimalist, but I am obsessed with efficiency and organization when dealing with layouts and storage solutions.
Personally, I organize/declutter some of my mom's items I know she never uses when she isn't home. When she comes back she thinks I just cleaned - not decluttered, which all moms are happy about. Sometimes it's about being sneaky hihi
Due to the high property values here in Vancouver we’ve combined with my daughter and her family of 4 and my adult son in our older family home. My poor son-in-law is an extreme minimalist and he suffers greatly with us. I have been trying hard to clear out 40 years worth of “stuff” and am progressing, but it is difficult to get everyone on board. My husband has every tool in the universe. Our garage would give you heart palpitations!
Two thing you can do to improve your storage wall is to add extra shelfs. Looks like there is a lot of stacking going on. That slow people down and makes them more susceptible to push things to the back and hide the items. Plus. if you get clear plastic storage bins to put the things in. That also makes it easier to use the full depth of the storage and easier when you need multiple things at the same time
Something I got from Nathaniel Drew that is sticking with me this past year: “You can’t change or force someone’s way of thinking.” And minimalism, or even religion or beliefs in general, applies this so well.
love seeing the blend of minimalist and maximalist (is that the right word? lol) living! really puts it in a clear, and real perspective. i feel like as someone who isn't a minimalist, it's sometimes hard to picture how actual life works when seeing them in videos. So seeing the compromises gave a little peak.
IKEA are the masters of organisational storage, from the tiny to the huge! Love the BESTÅ! It’s great that you’re a master of compromise, Daniel, and a great designer/architect because you come up with terrific solutions.
"Fish tank and all"... I couldn't help but laugh so hard when you showed your super ecstatic brother and said that lol you sound so annoyed that he brought that fish on top of everything hahaha but seriously I am the SAME way as you when it comes to clutter as I am super ocd about the most minimal details as well and unfortunately I am also the ONLY one that is constantly tidying up 24/7 since I can't concentrate on anything else before doing so otherwise - Super relatable + helpful video and LOVE the storage wall (such a smart idea and so beautifully done!) :)
That storage wall is awesome! I loved the kitchen video too. We will be refreshing our kitchen this year or next - I’m pretty convinced that handle-free cabinets are the way to go.
I've been on my minimalist journey for about 5 or 6 years now but my husband hasn't caught my bug until very recently. I wasn't quick to judge him for keeping things but open to talking to him about things when he was open to declutter because he knows how much I enjoy it. Great video! I'm a new subscriber from Vancouver, BC Canada
That noodle cube is an exact replica of my Asian mother's pantry. Even the tea box! And my mixed race brother and I moved back in with my mum during huge times of change in our lives... we aren't minimalists but needing organization ideas, because 4 adults have STUFF
my fam wouldn't follow the labels or organization I set up, so I keep my things separate as much as possible and focus on upkeeping my own room. Trying to manage public spaces was a never ending battle, not worth my time or energy
Well there’s nothing wrong with this and while it’s not always an ideal choice for an entire lifestyle change for everyone I think it’s a consideration for certain times in a person’s life. When I was in college I was a minimalist. And my mother has become a minimalist later in life. I think the key to minimalist is great storage/organization and recycling things you don’t use anymore. One minimalist wish list I want is a kitchen that I can close away in a closet so I don’t have to see it when not in use. I’m also planning to do this with some of my other belongings at some point. Anything you do to improve a space by minimizing clutter is exactly my definition of minimalism. Thanks for the video! Best wishes to you and your family 😊💎
When I moved back in with my family sometime, I learned that my bedroom was the only place I could live how I wanted. Never moving back in unless it’s a dire need. 😩
I love what you have done and I love more that your mum does not care about what people think. You have a perfect balance between clean, minimal and still keep the objects that are pleasant for your family. Even the fish tank.
Yay, you’ve joined Nebula! I spend much more time watching things on UA-cam, but I am also a Nebula member, so I appreciate the reminder when there are long versions of a particular video over there :) (I’ve recently admitted defeat and also subscribed to UA-cam premium because I couldn’t stand the mid-roll ads especially anymore, so ad-free applies for me either way!)
What a wonderful video! I'm a minimalist but my mum isn't and we rent a house together. It's hard to find some common ground in the shared spaces and her room is a true mess. So now together we're trying to find a system that works for her, finding the right storage space and just helping out. If we find the proper furniture to store her work stuff, the expansion towards the living room will hopefully end haha.
OMG... the timing for this video is perfect. Just bought a house and it has no storage. I've been dreading when my in-laws come to visit in the summer to help take of their grandchild. Mugs half full of Chinese teas and nuts. everywhere 🤨.
I have a wife and 5 kids and while I love them all I’m the only Minimalist. They have gotten better at seeing the benefits of it but it is still tough sometimes. And my wife likes to make fun of how my wardrobe is just black, grey, and white.
I'm just learning now at 53 that I have wasted so much money on material things that I never really needed. I've started getting rid of clothes, shoes bags and won't buy anything unless I throw something else away. It was hard letting go at first but once done I felt so much better and I'm determined to stay clutter free.
Absolutely amazing that you could find time and stick to creating content inspite of the exhaustive new phase of both your lives. Here's wishing you lesser sleep deprived nights very soon 😁❤️
I am a minimalist architectural historian with a (messy, imo) artist boyfriend. Thank goodness he has a car and studio space, which he can use as storage spaces without any interference from me.
Love the shelf set up, my own suggestion to labeling the cabinets from the inside is maybe instead, color coordinating the cabinets with a colored dot most l likey located on the bottom right side of the drawer. I use that for my apartment so that I can tell which side I open the cabinet from. In your case, you can accomplish that and know what is inside the cabinet too.
Lol I'm about to lose it at home, my parents and siblings are an absolute mess and disorganized which completely stresses me out and when I mention trying to get rid of stuff that hasn't been used for years or learning to organize, or even getting rid of certain furniture which has out lived its use im told that I'm someone who lacks creativity or "flavor" because I enjoy minimalistic environment, but they see it as someone who doesn't want to clean up or don't like decor or stuff. Thank you for this video I will try these tips out to my family
My husband has a minimalist wardrobe, but that's pretty much where it ends 🙄. His office looks like a bomb has gone off, he leaves shoes everywhere 😤 and is constantly misplacing keys, phone, wallet etc. I get him involved in find a place for things and really listen to his ideas, I implement them and he still doesn't put things away 🤦. But at least now he doesn't get upset with me when I call him out on it. I like a place for everything and everything in its place, I have always been that way.

Im the minimalist in my family and my struggle is with the leftover food and the fridge and always trying to keep it in order.
I'm a minimalist with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) of cleaning and keeping things organized, it's just very hard to live with others.
Great solution!
Watching these channels about 'minimalism', I've concluded all this means, have a few bits in white, grey and occasionally black, also IKEA lol.
