Supper's Ready - Apocalypse in 9/8 Organ Solo
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 бер 2013
- This is my stab at the organ solo played by Tony Banks in the Apocalypse in 9/8 segment of Supper's Ready. It was played on a Nord C2 and recorded with a Korg Kronos X 88. The backing track is a tweaked MIDI file, which is why it sounds a little crappy, and the video was taken with a 3rd gen iPad.
50 anni fa il capolavoro del 20mo secolo
Playing bass on this section will put you into a mesmerized state of being!
Apocalypse in 9/8 has got to be THE most amazing piece ever!!!!!
One of the best solos from Mr Banks, also rhythmically complex, because drums play odd pattern
@@awaken77 And on top of that, what age were the members of Genesis when they wrote that masterpiece?! 20 something! Try get a 20 something year old these days to come up with a piece like that!!
@@alanlucas501 Different times for sure, and when writing music was real song craft. But I also think even then this was coming out of a very British cultural experience. I don’t think this would have come from American musicians very readily.
Loved it! Did anyone else shout out 666 when it ended?
Of course.
I read that Peter Gabriel improvised that at the end of the solo and at first Tony was like "here he comes again ruining one of my best solos...".
Later on, when they listened to it, they all agreed it was perfect.
I did exactly that, I got to 'sweet rock and roll' before I was interrupted by a mystified girlfriend.
The 7 trumpets were blowing Sweet Rock and Roll as I listened!
I think we all screamed "666" simultaneously.....which may explain the brief sighting of Satan reported hovering over three states last spring!
Hell YES!
The finest art of MisterSparks playing Genesis' Apocalypse in 9/8, absolutely an immortal song ever!
Tony Banks still after all these years is a miracle- how he came up with all that stuff. Fantastic. thanks for work und upload.
Hi - drummer from 'The Book Of Genesis' UK Tribute band here. Very useful to play along to during my practice routine - thanks and well done!
+Scott Hunter Thanks dude! I did the Genesis tribute thing too back when I lived in the UK, so I feel your pain :-)
Hi, Keyboardist from Entangled in Australia. Also found it very useful and well done. Where are you now, if not UK?
Use paiste?
@@bonhamcymbal I certainly do. Nothing but early-on 602's and later, 2002's. There's nothing like bashing beautiful, silver 602's with Blue screen logo's and red 2002's, which always sound amazing live, or in the Studio. Paiste manufacture the absolute best cymbals. The Swiss have it over the american-made cymbals. Always. (Except perhaps, for a certain pair of Zildjian 13" Hi-hats I once owned. I sold them years ago, and I'm still kicking myself for doing so).
@@bandfromtheband9445 paiste is so consistent..great sound
WOW. This has to be the best - the best - way to really appreciate the genius of Tony Banks. Excellent!! Thanks for sharing YOUR talents as well. Gracious amigo!!!
You did a great job!! Tony Banks would be proud !!
❤
Marvellous
Frickin' Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll say it again. You've got that song down pat. 100+
Foxtrot is my favourite Genesis and I thought you played it brilliantly. The organ sound was pretty good too.
watching in 20.22love gen love rhist top marks mate from England my xx
man tony banks is great and people keep saying that gabriel was genesis
Arturo Benavides Exactly. The truth is that it is Tony Banks who is the glue that ties all Genesis songs together with his unique backdrops ( best organ sounds alone of all the prog rock bands imo - especially on Wind and Wuthering ) and then his melodies on top which are also the best because we the audience can hum or sing them back. They resonate more. Banks rocks
*But* the problem about Banks is, he is the one who turned Genesis into a pop band, not Collins as what most people think. Of course that doesn't change his superiority as a keyboardist.
Of course Gabriel was not the whole of Genesis, just half of it. The better one.
Exactly. Same opinion far from Korea.. Banks is the key to understand all Genesis music.
@@tudvalstone POPPETER WAS A SINGER OF GENESIS....THAT''S ALL!!!!BANKS IS THE HEART AND SOUL OF GENESIS...
Best genesis solo
I don’t know the musical terms for this but the best way I can describe it is that the tone of your instrument is not quite the same as the original with Tony.
That being said, many people make attempts cover this solo. It could be that the result is their interpretation of the song, But I tend to think that it is their lack of ability to properly put the emotions, the intonations, the timing, or whatever it is that Tony put into his playing, but what is missing spoils it for me. You just shouldn’t go around fucking up perfection.
I’ve listened to this song for almost 50 years now. It’s like an old lover.. I know how it feels, I know every nook and cranny. I was able to close my eyes and truly enjoy this. It makes me me feel good when I run across others that deeply appreciate the music of Genesis. And I’m sure that you appreciate the music because without such an appreciation you would not have taken the time to learn that piece in such beautiful, intricate, detail. Thanks so much for doing that.
You only have 168 subscribers? If your other material is as good as this that’s a shame. You now have 169.
tony banks created that on the spot!
Gracias, grandiosa interpretación y grandioso tema de Génesis.
That was AMAZING!!! EXCELLENT!!!
You've got that song down pat. 10+
Genius
Damn, an All Nord setup. That must have cost a lot hehe
Confess I was thinking the exact same thing.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍💯
Great play! I wish I could play some day..
Puts a happy smile on my face! Prog rocks. 🍺
Bravo!
Excelent work. Enhorabuena, maestro.
Excellent 👍😎
This is really cool, you did a great job
You may have gotten some Hammond harmonics wrong in the latter parts, but you have the amazing capacity to play Banks' parts! This is outstanding! I wish that I had the gift of your right hand! You're amazingly talented!
Whoa! High praise indeed! Thank you :-)
@@MarkGlenning I sure wish that I had your dexterity!
Brilliant love that song, it is epic the way it builds classic prog, well played sir, skillfull
Brilliant. Well played.
Thanks!
Magnifique ! ! !
Well played maestro
Great sound!
Bada$$ dude. Well done
666 is no longer alone!

Very well played.

Nicely done :)

Awesome
excellent !! the only problem is that you do not have enough nord keyboards.
got it nailed well done ✅
amazing. rivaled by only Mr Banks. would love to see you play FIrth of Fifth intro
hi.. my best wishes and thanks for this.. i'm studing it now... whit chords too.. exellent work, thanks again.. bye from rome!
Thank you so much!
Il solo più bello di sempre. Tony Banks nominato sempre troppo poco tra i tastieristi contemporanei. Peccato poiché a mio modo di vedere un pilastro del Prog assieme al mio amore Emerson ed anche Wakeman.
Thank you! I don't have sheet music, I'm afraid. There are plenty of MIDI files of Supper's Ready that can give you a good start on this piece, but the trickiest part to learn is between 1:50 - 2:09 as everyone seems to have their own take on it. I tried to stay as close to the original as I could. I use Anytune Pro+ for the iPad - you can slow music down to learn complicated passages.
ua-cam.com/video/rmhV3diT1x4/v-deo.html for the correct middle chordy bit; ua-cam.com/video/VmeWrji7U6Y/v-deo.html for the rest of it (including full PDF) ;)
30 years later that time signature still confuses the hell out of me lol
Guitarist of note (pun intended) & youtube instructor here. Try counting out the 9 beats like this: (1 2 3) 1 (1 2) 1 (1) 1 Tap it out with your right hand doing the beats in parenthesis (which form a pattern of 3 beats then 2 beats then 1 beat) and with your left hand doing the single beats (which fall on 4, 7, and 9). Hope that’s helpful!
Same!
Fine job. Lots of time and effort on your part. Not 100% but very very close considering the talent of Mister Banks and how long the solo is---ah the good old days for us fellow keyboards players. GREAT job man-I've had bits worked out before, but never put it all together. I surely would like to hear any pieces that you've written. If you have the patience to spend that much time on somebody else's song, I'd love to hear what your own style is like. Keep up the great work--I totally enjoyed.
Pretty well done. I just wish you'd have used a different sound, which would've allowed you to achieve the staccato that Tony did.
So much of the sinister atmosphere of this solo is generated by those short, sharp notes.
true, percussion is missing.. but nonetheless, very well done !! :)
Agree, not sinister enough
. This should not be about the equipment being compared but the masterful job of interpreting Tony Banks work I thought was spectacular
@@jrockofages5413 Holy Jesus Christ, someone gets it. Thank you. Tony changed his rig throughout the years... this was just me being trying to capture a tiny part of him.
Nice! :D
Fuck yea nice job man
ooh ooh E, ooh E, ooh ooh ooh E.
Phil "wrote" that rhythm, not to take anything away from the genius Mr. Banks.
He had to remove a note from the bass part because it was too hard for Rutherford to play (without getting confused I imagine). I don't know how they do it with TB playing in 4/4 underneath...
I Still confuse the hell out while playing this because of the 9/8 and 4/4 at the same time, i mean I can play it, but I would get confused when playing over the 9/8 base in terms of when I start. It's more practice than anything
Brilliant!! Though I'm not sure who was busier here - Tony or Phil. Both had their hands full while Peter, Steve and Mike had their hands in their pockets...
Anthony B. Adamkovic Yeah the guitar during this part is kinda lame
Steve Hacket and Peter Gabriel took a break and left the stage during this part. Mike played bass pedals and rhythm guitar. It became a trio for this. Same with the 7/8 jam in Cinema Show.
Chicago Touch Steve was very much on stage throughout 9/8. You must be thinking of Tony’s keyboard solo in The Cinema Show.
K thanks
Thanks dude! Everybody seems to play the middle part (1:50 - 2:09) differently, so you just have to try and work it out as best as you can. I used to play for a Genesis tribute band, so I can't even estimate how much time I spent hunched over my keyboards to learn the parts. I plan on posting a few more examples soon!
A pretty good effort indeed :)
Check out ua-cam.com/video/rmhV3diT1x4/v-deo.html to see how those middle chords should be played... :)
Great playing, I am just starting to learn key boards and would love the chance to try to play this piece. Do you have the sheet music for it? I would be willing to pay for a copy if you have it. Thanks
You're welcome! :-)
It was alright that ;-)
I wish you added the mellotron part too...
Impressive. Everything sounded spot on until 1:44. You're repeating a IV-I chord progression 4 times, A major to E major. Pretty sure it's a V-I progression, B Major to E Major.

Really well done. I think you could use some reverb to give the tone some ... space.
Great job! Did you use a midi file for the background or did you compose t?
Compose it, I mean.
@@luvjammin04 It was a midi file I grabbed from the internet :-)
Still got it eh Mark..... If ya took the backing track away, that's what I'd sound like playing keys ;-)
Doesn't that Nord have percussion for the Hammond sound?
Nádhera-v originále to Tony Banks.
Nice work - I hear some problems especially at 1:47 - you’re playing a major chord where Tony played minor - all in all great
Rick Wakeman gaming
I am trying to figure out how to play this, can you type in the notes in the comments section
Hi dude, thanks for watching! There are a LOT of notes in this passage , so you would find it better to hunt down a MIDI file of the song and use that as a basis for learning it, as I did :-)
how challenging was it to play it?
@Thecoldwarrior 22 - A little at first, but as with anything, it gets much easier as your muscle memory develops. There are more challenging Genesis songs to play, like Can Utility and the Coastliners. I preferred playing The Lamb to that.
MisterSparks practice makes perfect....
Nice job! But crappy? That's my MIDI file you're complaining about! I suppose you learned all these keyboard parts from my MIDI file too? haha
Dude, it's my tweaking that was crappy! I imported it to a Korg Kronos and used a bunch of stock sounds. Your MIDI file was foundational to learning this song.
@@MarkGlenning I was just kidding. I hope that was clear :)
@@sgoodwinca Ah, you big kidder you ;-)
Nord city
Just try playing it at 120 bpm like we used to... it'll bend your finger bones :-)
I always find it inventive that Tony Banks played 4/4 arpeggios over a 9/8 figure. Was it inventive or laziness/lack of creativity? Whatever the intention the end result delivers.
well, nobody knows how to play chords (1:50)
I do :) See ua-cam.com/video/rmhV3diT1x4/v-deo.html
