As an African American physician (family medicine trained hospitalist/urgent care), I am very happy to see this level of sub-specialist care being available in Ghana (and into the greater continent over time). While this is a significant step in the right direction from a medical care standpoint, I would be very cautious for Ghana or any other African country to follow the same path of the American medical system. They need only to look at the bloated costs, red tape, and inverted leadership (executive/administrative driven vs. patient-doctor driven) set up of our system to see the significant pitfalls. I would issue a very strong level of caution from the infrastructure side going into the future so that the African people do not follow the same fate of the average American who goes into life altering debt just trying to pay off medical bills. As long as this pitfall can be avoided, I believe this is an awesome step in the right direction.
