But even it to work because see I don't have anything against soviet designers, but an indian pilot drew a jaundiced view of late models of the MiG-21 saying that the last 800 Lt of the fuel tank were almost unusable because it moved the centre gravity, something dangerous because the MiG-21 could pitch nose-up at low speeds during landing approach, and I thought this design defect calculation was exclusive of the MiG-21, but I read that the Tupolev "blinder" had the same trouble, so to stall-up at low speeds is a tendency of the soviet military aircraft
I recall researching this bomber in the 1980’s while in US Naval Aviation. We never encountered it in the Pacific, just Bears, Badgers and Backfires. It was most likely long retired from frontline service at Khorol East Soviet Naval Air Base by then. Although reportedly a performance failure on many levels I can understand the design elements utilized to meet the supersonic long range bomber requirements. Keep in mind the state of technology and aerodynamics back then. Many lessons were still to be learned. It had to operate from primitive fields, hence the tall stout gear, huge tires and engine placement up high. This would move the CG aft hence the powerful stabilators. It was probably a PITA maintaining the engines and the engines were probably crude and troublesome. The swept wings look very aggressive for the time to achieve the dash speeds desired. Not sure how they performed at high speed but they were probably difficult to manage at low speeds and landing. The rudder also looks too small for this large of an aircraft adding to control issues. The hoist up crew loader system was probably utilized to eliminate ground equipment but it added unnecessary complexity and weight...still extra weight at front was helpful for the CG. Ventral ejection is obviously suboptimal but perhaps they were concerned about the two huge turbojets? Lol I take nothing away from Andrei Tupolev and his excellent design bureau. The British and Americans also created some strange flying contraptions while learning the physics of high speed flight. For myself the early TU-22 Blinder will always be an exotic and strangely beautiful machine. I have always been fascinated by it.
It probably didn't have the range to be much use over the Pacific. The Badger wasn't that long-legged either but it could fly far enough to 'top off' a Bear and make the latter's range that much more extraordinary.
Rudder size is basically dependent on the placement of the angels, and their ability to correct for an engine loss. There is a reason the B-52 has the smallest rudder of any plane because it has eight engines to compensate for an engine loss.

До разводов дело даже доходило- настолько высокой была аварийность этих машин...Но в геополитике холодной войны свою роль он сыграл...и не последнюю!!
The rear engine configuration made upward ejection impossible, because of the risk of aspiration of ejected men. So, in the Tu-22's cockpit you enter and exit from below.
I gotta say sitting down and then being hoisted UP into the cockpit is a little freaky. 3:41 in the background shows you the seats. Then there's the whole minimum altitude for safe ejection using the downward ejecting seats in the Blinder. B-52 has downward firing seats as well(just the lower 2, the upper 4 go out the top. Minimum safe ejection was 250ft agl for the downward firing B-52 seats. The minimum ejection altitude for the down firing K-22 ejection seats was 820 feet agl.
Fun fact - this was equipped with the same jet engines found on the improved M-3m Bison B bomber (production ceased in 1963 but was continued in use til 1994 with 93 made in total). This Tu-22 is the most confusing of all since there are 2 other variants given the same designation ;)
It's just that the designer Tupolev wanted to develop a new bomber to replace the Tu-22, but he was not allowed, saying that the missiles are more promising than bombers and they would not give money from the treasury to design a new bomber. But Tupolev nevertheless begged for money, allegedly for modernization, and having received funding, his design bureau designed a completely new bomber. True, in order not to irritate the government of the USSR, they assigned him the Tu-22M index.
Slinging bucket seats for the crew so all they had to was sit and be taken up to the cockpit instead of actually crawling...hell if that ain't the coolest feeling and idea I dont know what is. Contemporary of the B58 Hustler. Better in some ways. The Hustler was very complex and a maintenance whore. The TU22 and later TU22m3's were much simpler aircraft. Not good for a low level bailout like a takeoff or approach malfunction. Still, a very capable machine. Props to the Soviets. They do know how to build a good aircraft.
